Annual Report 2009-2010 Twin Cities A School that Works From the President’s Office Fr. David Haschka, S.J. Dear Friends of Cristo Rey, This past year has witnessed ever increasing national attention to the state of urban education. A startling observation was made by former West Virginia governor Bob Wise in testimony before congress: “[T] he enormous cost of bailing out the banks, financial institutions, the auto industry, and AIG is less than the economic cost of just five years of [school] dropouts in the United States. The ultimate economic stimulus package is a diploma!” At the same time, the Cristo Rey Network of urban schools is becoming ever more a beacon of hope, one of very few successful efforts to prepare low-income -- typically minority -- youth for success in college and productive participation in the economy. In June 2010, the network graduated 704 students from low-income inner-city families and every single one was accepted to college! This school is well positioned to add its own light to that beacon. Ironically, as our program has grown stronger, our financial underpinning has become weaker. For the first time we were unable to secure sufficient paying jobs to support our budget (based on 90% of students working in paying jobs.) We have done some “belt-tightening” and generous benefactors have stepped up to fill the gap such that we completed our third year “in the black.” While financial challenges continue, there is much good news to report. As I draft this letter, more than 30 percent of our seniors have been accepted into college. The rest continue drafting their college application essays, chronicling their struggles and articulating their hopes for the future – hopes that they and their families would not even have dared four years ago. Our faculty is putting in extra hours drafting – together with other Leader Schools in the Cristo Rey Network – a “standards based” curriculum that promises to become, itself, a standard for preparing students like ours to succeed in college and life. Page 2 If we are to keep faith with the 200 students coming behind those seniors and with the thousands who will follow them in years to come, we will need approximately 40 more businesses to step-up and join the effort. And we will continue to need generous, self-sacrificing benefactors to make up the difference between the cost of effective education and what these hard-working students and families can provide. Thank you for joining the effort. David Haschka, S.J. President From the Principal’s Office Jeb Myers Dear Friends of Cristo Rey, When my daughter was five and looking at an Advent wreath she asked, “Daddy, why is there one pink candle and three purple?” I explained that we light the pink candle in the third week to remind us that our preparation (continuing to be “good” in five-yearold-speak) for the coming of Jesus is still very important and we should not lose faith. During the 2009-2010 academic year, our faculty and staff continued to improve our efforts to support student academic gains in preparation for college success. We collaborated with six of our twenty-four Cristo Rey Network Schools to lead the development of a national college preparatory standards-based curriculum. Unique to our standards based curriculum, students are only promoted when all standards are successfully demonstrated at each level. We instituted voluntary Saturday Sessions for ACT test preparation. Fortytwo of our seventyone Juniors attended all seven sessions leading up to the ACT test in April. We created a weekly Eligibility List that communicates to students and families the progress each student is making towards graduation. Besides being on track for graduation, this list also dictates which students need additional academic support and which students are able to take advantage of opportunities such as extra-curricular activities, school ambassadors and rewards. Our 2009-2010 academic year has been a year of transformation for our school and preparation for our first graduation in 2010-2011. We have lit the pink candle and we continue in faith. Jeb Myers Principal Page 3 From the College Counseling Office Spotlight on Georgetown Mariah Mendoza and Luis Nava-Torres attended the Georgetown University Pre-College Program in Washington, D.C. In this program, students attended college prep workshops and participated in leadership exercises. They dined with the President of the Cristo Rey Network, Rob Birdsell. The founder of the Cristo Rey Network, Father John Foley, S.J., spoke at the closing banquet. On the first day of classes, Mariah Mendoza noticed a pattern. “We were going around in a circle introducing ourselves and were saying ‘I am so lucky to be here,’” Mariah said. “We didn’t have to pay for the program.” “When an opportunity like that comes around you take it,” she said. Luis Nava-Torres also attended the program at Georgetown. “I really enjoyed taking International Relations and American Politics classes,” Luis said. “I experienced what college professors are like,” he said. Georgetown is his number one pick for college. Dr. Daniel Porterfield, Senior Vice President of Strategic Development at Georgetown, offered to write recommendation letters for Mariah and Luis. Jazmin Mendez at NHYI Page 4 Additional College Experiences The summer before her senior year at Cristo Rey, Jazmin Mendez helped perform her first autopsy. She attended the National Hispanic Youth Initiative in Health, Biomedical Research, and Policy Development Scholar’s Program in Washington, D.C. She visited institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, several agencies in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Capitol Hill and several museums. Isidoro (Izzy) Tirado, David Jara and Chris Silva attended the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar in Annapolis, Md. The Summer Seminar is a sixday experience for high achievers who want to learn about life at the Naval Academy. Midshipmen (students at the Naval Academy) ran the program with oversight by active duty Navy and Marine Corps officers. More than 2,250 students from around the world attend the program each year. Kiara Clark attended ThreeSixty Journalism, a youth journalism workshop based at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minn. Students wrote and reported their own stories. Her story about obesity ran in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Saint Paul Pioneer Press. Luis Nava-Torres (left) at Georgetown Mariah Mendoza (center) at Georgetown From the Classroom: Science Teacher Michelle Dillon Science Success Dear Friends of Cristo Rey, A highlight for Science at Cristo Rey Jesuit in 2010 was Jazmin Mendez’ participation in an autopsy at the National Institutes of Health through a program called the National Hispanic Youth Initiative in Health. In Physical Science, students learned to control variables and communicate findings in order to improve design on windmills. They also made great strides in Biology. Learning about animal biology from a textbook serves a purpose, but nothing brings the concept home like dissection. At first, the students think that dissecting a pig is disgusting, but after some help and a little humor, they come to see the similarities between animals and humans as fascinating. It is incredibly rewarding to see our students interacting with the natural world around them. As a result of the generosity of Mr. John Ballbach, the Medtronic Foundation and many others, our students are learning in new, state of the art facilities. From bubbling chemical reactions to learning the process for making a penny, the labs have made learning science fun. We thank all of the benefactors who have made this possible! The standards we developed provide Cristo Rey students across the country with a clear path to success in college, eschewing social promotion. Standards provide a structure of rigor based on students’ demonstration of learning. Standards provide our families with feedback that informs them of the precise pace of their student’s progress towards graduation. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School – Twin Cities is a place where students, teachers and families are collaborating positively to ensure our students demonstrate each standard for graduation and success in life.” -- Jeb Myers, Principal Page 6 From the Hire4Ed Office Hire4Ed “The Hire4Ed Work/Study Program allows our students to gain valuable experience, build self-confidence and develop a broader view of the world while underwriting 70% of the cost of their education.* Our clients, in turn, get cost effective, motivated and well-trained employees. Fiscal year 2010 presented us with another economic challenge that your financial support helped answer. On behalf of everyone at Cristo Rey – Thank You! Know that your investment helps students transform their lives. You are making the best social investment possible, and it will have an impact for generations to come. As we look at Fiscal Year 2011, the grace surrounding our students remains, but the economic reality is more challenging. A common topic in philanthropic journals today is that recessions hit non profit organizations 24 to 36 months after they hit the for-profit sector. This has translated to a shortage of paying jobs for our students and decreased financial support of Cristo Rey. Those two factors, combined with multiple sources of start-up funding running their course, have resulted in significant challenges this year. Yet, as you see in the numbers below, there is much reason to remain hopeful that we will reach our goals. Please take some time to consider your contribution to Cristo Rey this year. In part because of your support, our students have been transformed. With your ongoing investment, the transformation will continue. Thank you!
