WELKOM EN GET IN CHARGE!
Namens de gehele organisatie van het NCC wil ik u van harte welkom
heten op het NCC 2016. Alweer de zesde editie in het 10-jarig bestaan van
dit geweldige congres. Dit jaar is gekozen voor het thema GET IN CHARGE,
wat zowel slaat op de boodschap, als ook op de manier waarop we u als
deelnemer aan dit congres de controle over de inhoud willen geven.
Onze contactlensmarkt ontwikkelt zich in een razend tempo en het is dus
belangrijk om IN CHARGE te blijven van deze ontwikkelingen. Hier gaan
we u ook mee helpen door dit NCC weer een veelvoud aan interessante
lezingen en workshops voor te schotelen?.
Geheel nieuw is de samenwerking die de NCC organisatie is aangegaan
met de BCLA (Britisch Contact Lens Association) op het wetenschappelijk
vlak. Naast alle boeiende lezingen bieden wij nu ook 2 dagen lang geheel
nieuw wetenschappelijk onderzoek welke op het NCC voor het allereerst
gepresenteerd gaat worden. Ook vindt er tijdens het NCC onderzoek plaats
onder de noemer “NCC DOING RESEARCH” (meer hierover verderop in het
programmaboek). Dit onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd met en door deelnemers, maximale interactie en participatie!
Daarnaast zult u in de gelegenheid worden gesteld om interactief aan
de lezingen deel te nemen door online en live vragen te stellen aan de
NCC Commissie

spelers die op dat moment hun lezing geven. Ook zij zullen aan u vragen
presenteren om zo de dialoog op gang te brengen over de ontwikkelingen
binnen ons vakgebied.
Het laatste nieuwe element wat wij hebben toegevoegd is het Xperience
Center. In dit Xperience center worden lezingen en workshop gegeven
en hebben de instrument leveranciers apparatuur neergezet om u in
de gelegenheid te stellen naar hartenlust ervaring op te doen met dit
instrumentarium. Daarnaast vindt hier ook het NCC DOING RESEARCH
onderzoek plaats en zullen wij op gezette tijden ook demonstraties met
deze apparatuur.
Ook wil ik alle mensen achter de organisatie van dit NCC enorm bedank
voor hun geheel vrijwillige inzet! Door hun inzet is het mogelijk geworden
weer een fantastisch congres neer te zetten.
Wij wensen u een fantastisch en leerzaam NCC 2016 toe!

Studiepunten
Dit jaar heeft de organisatie van het NCC weer accreditatie aangevraagd
voor deze 6e editie van het tweejaarlijks contactlenscongres. Evenals
vorige keer zowel voor het Kwaliteitsregister van het ADAP als het
Kwaliteitsregister van de Contactlensspecialisten bij het KABIZ.
Op zondag kunt u maximaal 7 studiepunten verdienen en op maandag 6
Enige tijd na afloop van het congres ontvangt u een bewijs van deelname
waarop staat aangegeven wanneer u aanwezig was en de hoeveelheid
studiepunten.
Als u deze studiepunten wilt laten bijschrijven dan is het navolgende
van belang voor u. Bij het registreren heeft u als het goed is op de
registratiesite het KABIZ- en/of het KP-nummer opgegeven. Als u dit nog
niet heeft gedaan, doe dat dan alsnog. Belangrijk is ook dat het uw eigen
verantwoordelijkheid is, dat u op de juiste manier geregistreerd staat.
Controleer uw gegevens en als blijkt dat er iets niet klopt, pas dit dan aan.
Wacht daarmee niet tot na het congres.
Dat kan wel even duren. Reclameren achteraf is helaas
niet mogelijk. Indien u nog vragen of opmerkingen
heeft, kom dan even bij de ANVC informatiestand in de
expositieruimte.

De geschiedenis
WELKOM BIJ NH CONFERENCE CENTRE
KONINGSHOF
U bent te gast in ons congreshotel. Een hotel met een - voor geoefende
ogen - zichtbare geschiedenis. Wij willen u rondleiden door ons gebouw en
u enkele geschiedenishints aanreiken. Wij wensen u een bijzonder prettig
verblijf toe.
HISTORIE NH KONINGSHOF
Koningshof is halverwege de vorige eeuw gebouwd als klooster van de
“Zusters van het Heilig Hart”. In de plaats Moerdijk in Noord-Brabant
leefden deze zusters in hun moederhuis. Toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog
uitbrak, werd voor deze zusters de vrede wreed verstoord. Zozeer zelfs, dat
in 1944 het moederhuis verwoest werd en de zusters moesten uitwijken
naar een ander tehuis. Via een overbruggingsperiode in Vught zijn de
zusters naar Veldhoven gekomen. Hun klooster/internaat werd gebouwd
in 1951 door aannemer Theunisse uit Heemstede. Het was getekend door
architect Koldeweij uit Voorburg. Dit klooster/internaat was het begin van
Koningshof! De eerste steen van Koningshof is gelegd op 17 november
1951, een steen afkomstig van de verwoeste kapel van Moerdijk. Hij is
geplaatst in de boog van de binnenplaats, waar nu de Glazen Foyer is
(tussen zaal 7 en 8). De volgende tekst is hier aangebracht: “Hier ging in
vervulling de belofte van het Heilig Hart: Ik zal overvloedige zegeningen
uitstorten over al hun ondernemingen”. Als wetenswaardigheid kunnen wij
u nog vertellen van de gevelsteen. Het is een reliëf van Joh. Goldenbeld
uit Utrecht, aangebracht boven de oude hoofdingang. Het stelt Christus
voor, de patroon van de zusters van het Heilig Hart, die alle mensen tot
zich roept. Zodoende ontstond ook de naam “Koningshof”. In 1978 werd
Koningshof een Congreshotel en Vergadercentrum. Koningshof biedt
sindsdien accommodatie voor congressen, trainingen, vergaderingen en
feesten. Doorgaans verblijven hier gasten, die heel geconcentreerd met
hun werk bezig zijn en het heerlijk vinden zich te kunnen ontspannen in
de natuur. Het totale gebouw bestaat uit 120 zalen (waaronder 5000 m2
beursoppervlak) in allerlei afmetingen en 509 hotelkamers. Daarnaast
zijn er natuurlijk de facilitaire ruimtes, 3 bars, een sportcentrum en 3
restaurants. Op de buitenmuren van het gebouw kunt u zien welk gedeelte
reeds bestond ten tijde van het klooster, omdat her en der blauwe kruisjes
ingemetseld zijn. De overige vleugels zijn nadien aangebouwd. In dit
verhaal zijn twee zalen opgenomen die bijzonder vermeldenswaard zijn
vanwege hun prachtige glas-in-lood ramen.
DE BRABANTZAAL
Met de bouw van de Brabantzaal is begonnen in 1960. De hoeksteen
werd geplaatst op 28 augustus van dat jaar. De architect was wederom
de heer Koldeweij. De aannemer was ditmaal de firma Adriaans uit
Helmond. De tekst van de hoeksteen luidt: “Deze hoeksteen werd gelegd
op 28 augustus 1960, door de eerwaarde moeder Augusta, algemeen
overste van de Zusters van het Heilig Hart”. Het glas-in-loodraam in de
Brabantzaal is gemaakt in het atelier van Jos Wielders uit Roermond, naar
een ontwerp van Eugène Laudy uit Sittard. In dit raam wordt de schepping
van het heelal uitgebeeld. In het midden ziet u Adam en Eva, die door Gods
scheppende hand tot leven worden gewekt. Om deze middenpartij heen
staan allerlei planten en dieren, die samen met deze eerste mensen in het
paradijs leefden.
DE BARONIEZAAL
De kunstenaar Eugène Laudy heeft in 1960 op prachtige wijze de bijbelse
visie op het Heilig Hart tot uiting gebracht. De Baroniezaal bezit zes
ramen aan de linkermuur, vier ramen aan weerszijde van het podium en
zes ramen aan de rechtermuur. (Vroeger stond het altaar op het podium)
De hele geschiedenis van de ‘Heilig-Hart-verering’ is uitgebeeld in deze
ramen. De ramen links geven taferelen uit het Oude Testament weer,
waarin de Heilige Geest wordt voorgesteld onder het beeld van levend
water. In het linkerraam wordt dit verder in drie taferelen weergegeven.
De eerste twee ramen, eerste tafereel vormen een uitwerking van de
Genesis-tekst: ”De Geest zweefde over de wateren” Genesis 1;2. Het derde
en vierde raam (tweede tafereel) stellen Mozes voor, die het water uit de
rots slaat, Exodus 17;6. Op de andere vier ramen kunt u Openbaringen
22;1 zien: “Een stroom van levend water, opbruisend uit de troon van
God en het Lam”. Zo is in deze compositie ieder raam de voorafbeelding
van het volgende en de vervulling van het voorafgaande. Zo is heel de
heilsgeschiedenis in enkele grote lijnen getekend, geconcentreerd rond
het hart van de Heer. Het vijfde en zesde raam (derde tafereel) beelden
het tempelvisioen uit van Ezechiël: “Toen bracht Hij mij terug naar de
ingang van de tempel en daar zag ik, onder de drempel van de tempel,
water stromen in oostelijke richting” Ezechiël 47;1. Deze drie taferelen
verslaan tegelijkertijd de grote perioden van Israels geschiedenis: de
oergeschiedenis, dus Genesis, de uittocht uit Egypte, Exodus en de
Profeten.Links naast het podium ziet u de uitbeelding van Johannes
7;37:”Wie dorst heeft, hij kome tot mij en drinke”. Jezus bij de Sihoubron
op het Loofhuttenfeest. Het Loofhuttenfeest is een herinnering van Gods
bescherming in de woestijn en een smeken om water. Dit raam is de
vervulling van wat in het Oude Testament werd aangeduid met Water.
Geest en Messias zijn hier aanwezig en Christus zelf past hier heel de
Oudtestamentische rijkdom op Zichzelf toe. Op het raam rechts naast het
podium is de getuigenis uitgewerkt: “In Jezus’ Hart vonden wij genade”.
Dit raam is weer een profetie van Johannes 19;34: ”Aanstonds vloeide er
water uit Zijn zijde”. Uit het Hart van Jezus vloeit nu in feite water en dat is
het symbool voor Heilige Geest, Kerk en Sacramenten. De zes ramen aan
de rechtermuur tonen de vervulling en de voltooiing van het ‘Heilig Hartmysterie’. Hier is de Apocalyps in beeld gebracht. In het eerste en tweede
raam klinkt dezelfde uitnodiging als in het raam links van het podium: “Wie
dorst heeft kome”. (Openbaringen 22;17)

Avondprogramma 13 maart 2016
Op zondag 13 maart vindt het traditionele diner plaats. Dit is de ideale
gelegenheid om over de eerste dag van het NCC na te praten met uw
collega’s. De avond zal om 20.00 uur van start gaan met een uitgebreid
buffet. Voor deze avond heeft u een aparte entreebewijs nodig. Deze heeft
u bij registratie vanmorgen ontvangen. Heeft u nog geen entreebewijs voor
het avondprogramma? Ga dan snel naar de registratiestand in de Benelux
foyer. Er is nog een beperkt aantal kaarten beschikbaar! Let op: Tijdens
de avond zijn de drankjes (fris, bier, wijn en binnenlands gedestilleerd)
tot 22.00 uur gratis. Na 22.00 uur zijn de drankjes voor eigen rekening.
Tijdens deze avond zal de muziek worden verzorgd door twee acts van
Olympische niveau! Deze acts gaan er voor zorgen dat u in charge bent op
de dansvloer.
DJ BART THIMBLES - VAN TURN UP THE BASS 90'S HOUSE
CLASSICS TOT NU
Thimbles draait al meer dan 25 jaar mee. Wekelijks op verschillende
podia, in clubs en op festivals. Op dikke privé feesten van celebreties
of de ’high end’ bedrijfsfeesten van bijv Heineken. Van Amsterdam tot
Tilburg, van New York tot LA, van Nieuw Zeeland tot Thailand. Van groots
op de Olympische spelen tot klein en ingetogen op de stranden van
Cannes, Turkije, Ibiza… etc. Het liefst combineert hij allerlei genres die
op een vloeiende manier aan elkaar worden geregen, zonder het oog op
de dansvloer te verliezen. Denk aan Disco, Reggae, Rock, Motown, 90’s
house en de meest recente house.
DENNIS VAN DER GEEST
Al vele jaren is Dennis van der Geest een graag geziene gast op vele dance
feesten waar hij een goede reputatie als DJ heeft opgebouwd. Muziek en
zijn werk als DJ zijn een grote passie voor hem, iets wat hem onderscheidt
van andere atleten en wat hem de nodige aandacht in de media heeft
opgeleverd. Na het beeindigen van zijn judo carierre in mei 2009, stortte
Dennis van der Geest zich volledig op zijn passie. Dennis is al vele jaren
actief als DJ en zijn style kan het beste worden getypeerd als een mix van
disco, funk en house. Deze benadering bracht hem op het idee voor zijn
eerste album “Sound From The Loft”, welke in 2011 werd uitgebracht. Dit
album resulteerde, in 2013, in een zeer succesvolle Podcast, genaamd
“Sound From The Loft Podcast”. Dit maandelijkse uurtje van sweet disco
en soulful house muziek is reeds meer dan 100.000 keer gedownload van
iTunes en staat meerdere malen in de Nederlandse top 10 van Podcasts.
Als producer werkte Dennis samen met internationale DJ’s zoals Roog,
Funkerman, Benny Royal, Rene Amesz en Ronals Molendijk. Met releases
op succesvolle internationale labels, zoals Flamingo, Hotfingers en Zulu,
is Dennis er klaar voor om de wereld te veroveren met zijn enegergieke DJ
set!
Het Nederlands Contactlens Congres zorgt niet alleen voor een
fantastische line up van sprekers maar verzorgt ook een avondprogramma
om uw vingers bij af te likken!

NCC Doing Research
‘To Flip or Not to Flip?’
Een nieuw item op het NCC 2016 is: NCC Doing Research. NCC
Doing Research is gebaseerd op Fellows Doing Research wat elk jaar
georganiseerd word op de American Academy of Optometry (AAO).
Het doel is om te laten zien dat het doen van onderzoek niet super
gecompliceerd of moeilijk hoeft te zijn. En dat je als optometrist/
contactlensspecialist zonder veel ervaring mee kunt doen aan het doen
van onderzoek. Daarnaast is het een prachtige gelegenheid om in
twee dagen een enorme hoeveelheid data te verzamelen, en deze voor
publicatie namens het NCC aan te
bieden aan een internationaal
vakblad.
ONDERZOEKSVRAAG
De onderzoeksvraag voor het
NCC 2016 is:
“How useful is it to flip eyelids
and assess palpebral roughness
during a contact lens checkup?”
In het Xperience center gaan we daadwerkelijk NCC deelnemers
onderzoeken. Het onderzoek bestaat uit een korte vragenlijst en het
ondertekenen van een consent formulier. Al met al duurt het onderzoek
niet langer dan 10 minuten per proefpersoon. We hopen dat dit onderzoek
ons onder meer duidelijkheid geeft over de associatie tussen papillae
en droge ogen klachten, over de associatie tussen papillae en wel
of niet contactlenzen dragen (en de invloed van verschillende typen
contactlenzen), en de associate tussen
papillae en leeftijd van de lensdrager.

Tijdens de opleiding word ons
geleerd om het ooglid om te
klappen en de binnenkant van het
ooglid te beoordelen. Maar de vraag
is wat doen we dan vervolgens met
deze bevinding? Veranderen we de
vloeistof, het lens type, of doen we
niets als de lensdrager geen klachten heeft? Helaas is er maar weinig over
dit onderwerp in de literatuur te vinden. Dat is dan ook een van de redenen
waarom we dit onderzoek willen uitvoeren: ‘meer bewijs verzamelen’.

IN DE PRAKTIJK
Contactlensspecialisten/optometristen in de praktijk doen de meest
interessante bevindingen, en vinden vaak oplossingen voor problemen,
maar niet elke contactlens specialist of optometrist heeft de middelen
om hier onderzoek naar te doen en dit te publiceren. Daardoor is er vaak
een gat tussen wat er bekend is in de literatuur en wat er bekend is in de
praktijk. Met dit onderzoek willen we proberen dit gat te dichten, door
samen met wetenschappers en specialisten uit de praktijk een onderzoek
op te zetten.

Het NCC Doing Research team,
bestaande uit: Robin Chalmers

Lammens en Louise van Doorn zijn de afgelopen maanden druk bezig
geweest met de voorbereidingen om de eerste NCC Doing Research een
succes te maken.
Daarnaast hebben inmiddels meer dan 50 vrijwilligers zich aangemeld
om op het NCC in blokken van ongeveer 1,5 uur het onderzoek uit te
voeren. Het is ontzettend leuk om te zien dat er zoveel mensen enthousiast
zijn. We hopen dat alle NCC deelnemers een kijkje komen nemen in het
Xperience center en mee willen doen aan het onderzoek. Iedereen vanaf
18 jaar kan meedoen. Het maakt niet uit of je contactlens drager of juist
niet bent, of je nachtlenzen draagt, of laser-chirugie hebt ondergaan, we
willen graag zoveel mogelijk proefpersonen onderzoeken zodat we op het
volgende NCC de resultaten kunnen presenteren aan iedereen. En hopelijk
antwoorden hebben op de vraagstellingen en dat deze weer in de praktijk
gebruikt kunnen worden.

Eef is fellow van de Americam Academy
of Optometry, fellow van the International
Association for Contact Lens Educators, fellow
van de BCLA (British Contact Lens Association)
en van de Scleral Lens Education Society, en
is erelid van de ANVC (Algemene Nederlandse
Vereniging voor Contactlens Specialisten).
Voor diverse optiekbladen schrijft hij columns en
artikelen, en is de eindredacteur van een aantal
digitale contactlens gerelateerde nieuwsbrieven,
waaronder het Nederlandstalige Contactlens
Nieuws Nederland. Eef is ook associate editor
van Contactlens & Anterior Eye (Journal of the
BCLA).
Hij is verbonden aan de universiteit van
Maastricht als associate researcher, is een
visiting scientist bij Manchester University
(Manchester UK) en adjunct Professor aan the
University of Montreal University College of
Optometry (CA) en adjunct assistant Professor bij
Pacific University College of Optometry (Oregon,
USA).

Marco van Beusekom
volgde de optiekopleiding
aan de Christiaan
Huygensschool in
Rotterdam, waar hij
in 1985 afstudeerde.
Daarna volgde hij de (MBO) opleiding optometrie
eveneens in Rotterdam en vervolgens de
opleiding tot contactlensspecialist in Haarlem.
In Januari 2002 studeerde hij af aan de
Hogeschool van Utrecht afdeling Optometrie.
Vanaf begin jaren ’90 heeft hij zich helemaal
toegelegd op het aanmeten van contactlenzen
en heeft ervaring opgebouwd met het aanmeten
van lenzen voor cosmetische toepassingen,
maar ook toepassingen voor medische indicaties.
Sinds 2011 werkt hij voor Johnson & Johnson
Vision Care als Professional Affairs Manager
Benelux. In de afgelopen 20 jaar heeft hij vele
lezingen gegeven over de toepassing van
contactlenzen en praktijk management in zowel
Nederland maar zeer zeker ook internationaal.
Hij is een veel gevraagd spreker op diverse
internationale congressen en heeft naast de
lezingen ook vele artikelen geschreven over het
onderwerp contactlenzen.
Zondag 13 maart • 08.40 - 9.20 uur
In deze openingslezing zal het thema
van dit NCC 2016 worden duidelijk
gemaakt. Er zal worden teruggekeken naar de diverse thema's die de
afgelopen jaren in de belangstelling
hebben gestaan, en de manier waarop
deze in de praktijk zijn toegepast. Ook
zullen de beide sprekersvooruit kijken
naar de toekomst en de ontwikkelingen
die zullen gaan plaatsvinden. Centraal
hierbij staat de vraag welke acties de

(NOG), bestuurslid van de stichting NCC en
grondlegger van het NCC congres, waarvan

In 2008 ontving hij het erelidmaatschap van
de Algemene Nederlandse Vereniging van
Contactlensspecialisten (ANVC) voor zijn rol
binnen de promotie van de contactlens en
zijn werk voor het NCC en Podium Cornea &
Contactlenzen.

Current topographic assessment
techniques are undergoing
considerable evolution in both
hardware and in the software
algorithms used to calculate and
display corneal and scleral shape. It
is therefore prudent that eye care
professionals stay abreast of these
dynamic changes, especially in
light of the many changes related to
ocular diagnosis, contact lens designs
and refractive surgery options. This
course will provide the participant
with new insights into the practical
use of modern videokeratography
and profilometry techniques in the
contemporary eye care practice.

OD MPH PhD FAAO
is the Assistant Vice
President for Industry
Research Development
in the Office of the Vice
President for Research
and Economic Development at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham (2014). He also
actively conducts ocular surface and contact
lens research and trains PhD students and
Fellows. Prior to his current position, Dr. Nichols
was the Kevin McDaid Vision Source Professor
(with tenure) at the University of Houston College
of Optometry between 2011 and 2014, and an
Associate Professor (with tenure) at The Ohio
State University College of Optometry from
2004-2011. While at University of Houston, he
founded The Ocular Surface Institute (TOSI)
and was its Chief Operating Officer; TOSI had a
team of 20 scientists, project managers, faculty
and graduate students dedicated in translational
ocular surface based research. Dr. Nichols
received his undergraduate degree at Hope
College (BA, biology), and Doctor of Optometry,
Master’s in Public Health (epidemiology) and
PhD (vision science) all from the Ohio State
University.
Dr. Nichols has received research funding
from the National Eye Institute of the National
Institutes of Health to study dry eye diseases
including meibomian gland disease, dry eye
and contact lens-related dry eye. He has also
received funding from the American Optometric
Foundation, in addition to a variety of industrial
partners in excess of $5 million as Principal
Investigator, and $6 million as Co-Investigator.
He writes and lectures extensively on contact
lenses and ocular surface conditions such as
dry eye and meibomian gland disease. He has
authored over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts,
75 clinical manuscripts, 175 abstracts, and has
given over 200 lectures worldwide on these
topics.
He is currently Editor of Contact Lens Spectrum
and Contact Lenses Today®, whose publications
reach over 50,000 eyecare practitioners
worldwide. Dr. Nichols also serves as an
Associate Editor for Eye and Contact Lens,
is a topical editor for Optometry and Vision
Science, and is on the editorial board of Current
Ophthalmology Reports. Dr. Nichols is a dual
diplomate in both the American Academy of
Optometry’s (AAO) sections of Public Health and
Environmental Optometry and Cornea, Contact
Lenses, and Refractive Technology. He is also
the Chair of the AAO’s Research Committee
and is a member of the Board of Directors of
the American Optometric Foundation—the
philanthropic arm of the American Academy
of Optometry. He also Chaired of the Tear Film
and Ocular Surface (TFOS) Society’s Medical
and Scientific Advisory Board, and the TFOS
International Workshop on Contact Lens
Discomfort (2013). His awards include three
Ezell Fellowships and the Borish Award from the
American Academy of Optometry and he was
recently elected as a Distinguished Scholar and
Fellow of the National Academies of Practice.

DENAEYER
Professor Caroline serves
as an instructor and lecturer at the Pacific University College of Optometry
in Forest Grove Oregon.
He is a Fellow member
and Diplomat of the Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the American
Academy of Optometry. Patrick is a Council
member of the International Society for Contact
Lens Research as well as a member of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators
and the American Association of Optometric
Educators. For the past 20 years Patrick has
served as a contributing editor for the Contact
Lens Spectrum and is on the editorial board for
the BCLA, Contact Lens and Anterior Eye journal
and CLAO Eye & Contact Lens journal. He has
published over 300 papers on a wide range of
contact lens topics and has lectured extensively
throughout the world.
Greg DeNaeyer is a
graduate of The Ohio
State University College
of Optometry. He
completed a hospital
based residency at the
Columbus VA Medical
Center. Dr. DeNaeyer practices at Arena Eye
Surgeons with an emphasis on specialty contact
lenses. He is a consultant for Visionary Optics
and shareholder of Precision Ocular Metrology.
PATRICK J.
CAROLINE
Dr. DeNaeyer was a co-founder and past
president of the Scleral Lens Education Society
and is a Fellow of the American Academy of
Optometry. He is a contributing editor for Contact
Lens Spectrum and a contributor to Review of
Cornea and Contact Lenses and Optometric
Management. Dr. DeNaeyer has lectured
internationally on specialty contact lenses and
was the 2012 GPLI practitioner of the year.
Currently his primary research is focused
on specialty lens design and corneo-scleral
topography.

Marine waar hij als onderzoeker meewerkte
aan verschillende contactlenzen studies voor
defensie. In 1986 specialiseerde hij zich in
contactlenzen en low vision bij verschillende
ziekenhuizen in Nederland. In 1988 volgde een
dienstverband bij Visser Contactlenzen Praktijk
in Nijmegen waar hij zich o.a. specialiseerde
in de aanpassing van contactlenzen op
medische indicatie. Daarnaast was hij betrokken
bij FDA studies en klinische testen voor de
contactlenzenindustrie.
In 1996 behaalde Ron zijn Optometrie diploma
aan de Hoge School in Utrecht. In hetzelfde jaar
werd hij Fellow of the American Academy of
Optometry, in 2006 Fellow of the BCLA en in
2013 Fellow of IACLE..
Ron werkt als Professional Services Manager bij
Procornea in Eerbeek sinds 1996. Hier speelt
hij een belangrijke rol in productontwikkeling,
support en training. Daarnaast is hij nog altijd in
de contactlenzenpraktijk werkzaam..
Ron geeft met regelmaat trainingen en
lezingen betreffende contactlens gerelateerde
onderwerpen in binnen en buitenland.

Stefan Zürcher, he founded the

Het kan feitelijk niemand ontgaan dat
voeding een belangrijke rol speelt in de
gezondheid van mensen en uiteraard
ook in de gezondheid van onze ogen.
In deze sessie, die zich uitstrekt
over twee gehele tijdslots gaan wij
in op al deze aspecten. Uiteraard
zullen we een wetenschappelijk
fundament leggen onder de invloed
van voeding op onze ogen, door u
op de hoogte stellen van feiten op
dit gebied. Daarnaast informeren
wij u inspirerende wijze over diverse
voedingsstoffen en wat deze voor onze
ogen kunnen betekenen. In een live
'kook en proef sessie' zult u dit ook aan
den lijve kunnen ondervinden.
In kleinere discussiegroepen zullen
wij ook uitleg geven over hoe
voedingadvies ook een rol kan spelen
in onze dagelijkse praktijkvoering. Een
aantal collega's zal u meenemen in
hun eigen ervaring en praktijk.

independent practitioner
in his stunningly
refurbished and
contemporised Victorian house-practice in
Northampton UK.
He is The President and a Fellow of the BCLA
and a former AOP Contact Lens Practitioner
of the Year. He is extremely proactive in fitting
all types of contact lenses to any age and
prescription. He feels that the market for contact
lenses can be expanded to many more patients
from children to presbyopes and beyond, and
many opportunities are currently missed. He
has a large CL patient base and is keen on
imaging and video capture for enhanced patient
education.
He has been awarded the accolade ''One of
The Best Clinical Photographers in the World
Today'' by Prof Nathan Efron and regularly
supplies images for lectures, magazine articles
and publications worldwide. His work in contact
lenses has included collaborative clinical trials
with Eurolens Research, Visioncare Research Ltd
and OTG Research & Consultancy.
He has been a Key Opinion Leader and
Clinical Advisor to virtually all the contact lens
manufacturers and many of the technology and
instrument companies over the years and has
participated in launching many new products
into the global market. He lectures internationally
on business, imaging technology, dry eye
and contact lens topics, all based on real life
experience in the consulting room. Evangelically
he has been trying to spread the concept of
charging proper fees and business development
following the implementation of a Care Plan
System in his own practice many years ago.
When voted “Best in Show” at a Bausch & Lomb
Global Symposium many years ago, Brian learnt
that people retain more by being entertained
while being educated and so since that time his
lectures and workshops have been interactive
and fun, sometimes even hilarious, but always
informative.

Op het NCC 2014 zijn wij een discussie
gestart over diverse elementen van de
zachte lens aanpassing. Een discussie
die inmiddels op wereldschaal wordt
gevoerd, maar waarbij inmiddels ook
vele nieuwe vragen zijn opgekomen.
In deze sessie praten de spekers u bij
over waar we nu eigenlijk staan en in
hoeverre we wel of niet in staat zijn
om de zachte lenzen aanpassing echt
te beïnvloeden. Wij zullen u in deze
sessie stap voor stap meenemen in het
aanpasproces en elke stap tegen het
licht van wetenschappelijk onderzoek
houden. Al deze inzichten zullen
vervolgens vertaald worden naar de
toekomst waarbij de vraag centraal
komt te staan, hoe wij weer in CHARGE
kunnen komen van de aanpassing wat essentieel is voor de toekomst van
ons vak.

Nederland. In 1988 volgde een dienstverband bij
Visser Contactlenzen Praktijk in Nijmegen waar
hij zich o.a. specialiseerde in de aanpassing van
contactlenzen op medische indicatie. Daarnaast
was hij betrokken bij FDA studies en klinische
testen voor de contactlenzenindustrie. In 1996
behaalde Ron zijn Optometrie diploma aan de
Hoge School in Utrecht. In hetzelfde jaar werd hij
Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry,
in 2006 Fellow of the BCLA en in 2013 Fellow
of IACLE..
Ron geeft met regelmaat trainingen en
lezingen betreffende contactlens gerelateerde
onderwerpen in binnen en buitenland.

Contact Lenses & Cleaning Solutions:
Friends or Foes?
Over the past 30 years the development of contact lens solutions
has shown tremendous changes, with products becoming increasingly complex and diverse in their composition and performance.
To many practitioners and patients, contact lens solutions appear
relatively similar in their composition, resulting in many choosing to
change between products on a whim, often driven by cost considerations rather than sound clinical or scientific acumen.
Historically, companies have concentrated on formulating lens care
regimens that provided maximum disinfection strength, with an aim
of providing safe, effective regimens that killed any potential pathogenic organisms on the lens surface. Recently, more emphasis has
been placed on producing regimens that assist with improving lens
comfort, with new regimens incorporating a variety of surfactants
and other surface active agents to aid wettability and, hopefully,
improve end of day comfort.
Traditional lens materials based on combinations of polyHEMA with
other more hydrophilic monomers have a propensity to deposit
proteins. Most care regimens to-date have been formulated to remove proteins, primarily lysozyme, often through a passive soaking
mechanism. However, silicone hydrogels offer a new challenge as
they are far more hydrophobic, primarily deposit lipid and have an

increased potential to denature any lysozyme deposited on the lens
surface. In addition, proteins deposited on conventional hydrogels
often become absorbed into the lens matrix, as opposed to being
adsorbed onto the surface with lower water content, siloxane-based
materials. These deposit patterns necessitate a different emphasis
for cleaning and may require considerable efforts to formulate care
regimens specifically targeted for silicone hydrogels.
Several studies over the past decade have shown that certain lens
materials and care system combinations have a high probability
of producing abnormally high levels of corneal staining, often with
no signs of discomfort being exhibited by the patient. In addition to
corneal staining, clinical and laboratory-based data suggest that
the chemical preservatives used in many lens care systems may
enhance bacterial adherence to the corneal epithelium. This may
represent an important risk factor for lens-related corneal infection.
Understanding and unravelling these interactions is of considerable
importance in order to maximize safety during lens wear.
This presentation will briefly review the major components of care
regimens and investigate the importance of cleaning, wetting and
compatibility when choosing a modern care regimen. It will emphasise up-to date results to help clinicians understand the importance
of choosing a solution – rather than letting the patient choose the
solution themselves!

level. He has managed an international survey
of contact lens prescribing trends since 1996.
Danielle M. Robertson
completed her O.D. in
2002 and her Ph.D. in
Vision Science in 2007 at
the University of Houston
College of Optometry.
She is currently an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University
of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr.
Robertson is a Fellow in the American Academy
of Optometry, a Diplomate in the Cornea, Contact
Lens and Refractive Technologies section and a
Fellow in the British Contact Lens Association.
She is a member of the Association for Research
and Vision in Ophthalmology, the American
Society for Cell Biology, the American Society for
Microbiology, the American Society for Endocrinology, and the International Society for Contact
Lens Research. Dr. Robertson was a two-time
Ezell Fellow and a recipient of a Scientific Career
Development Award from Research to Prevent
Blindness. In addition to NIH/NEI-funding,
Dr. Robertson has received scientific research
awards from OneSight Research Foundation, the
American Optometric Foundation, the Contact
Lens Association of Ophthalmologists Education
and Research Foundation, and the Eye Bank
Association of America to support her work in the
areas of corneal epithelial cell biology, microbiology, diabetes, and contact lens. Giancarlo

Philip is President-Elect of the International
Society for Contact Lens Research and Vice
President of the International Association of
Contact Lens Educators. He is an honorary
member of the UK Association of Contact
Lens Manufacturers, a Fellow of the American
Academy of Optometry and the British Contact

College of Optometrists. Philip was the BCLA
Medallist in 2014 and BCLA Pioneer’s Lecturer

gezondheid van mensen en uiteraard
ook in de gezondheid van onze ogen.
In deze sessie, die zich uitstrekt
over twee gehele tijdslots gaan wij
in op al deze aspecten. Uiteraard
zullen we een wetenschappelijk
fundament leggen onder de invloed
van voeding op onze ogen, door u

orthomoleculair therapeut noemen. Simpelweg

slaan tussen (oog)gezondheid en voeding.

NCC is de ontwikkeling van het
vakgebied contactlenzen. Dit is ook de
reden waarom het NCC samenwerkt
met diverse organisaties, zoals de
American Academy of Optometry en
de BCLA, om zo kennis en ervaring
te delen met lokale specialisten. In
deze sessie gaan twee sprekers onder
leiding van Robin Chalmers u uitleggen
welke zaken er komen kijken bij het
maken van artikelen en het doen van
onderzoek. Shehzad Naroo, editor-in
chief van het vakblad Contact Lens &
Anterior Eye laat zien hoe het beste
een wetenschappelijk artikel of case
report te schrijven, en Eric Papas kijkt
naar onderzoeksethiek. Niet om u af te
schrikken, maar bedoeld om een hand
te reiken en drempels te slechten.
Een sessie die bedoeld is voor die
specialisten die graag in CHARGE
willen komen en zijn van hun eigen
ontwikkeling en daarmee ons vak
ook weer steeds een treetje hoger te

and has made significant contributions to the
development of several contact lenses and lens
care products.
He recently received the Max Schapero Award
from the section on Cornea, Contact Lenses
and Refractive Technologies of the American
Academy of Optometry in recognition of his
contributions to the field. He has published
over 100 articles and book chapters, holds 11

research reports. Among his current interests are
presbyopia, the ocular surface and meibomian
gland, ocular discomfort, measurement
of subjective responses and postgraduate
education.
He has mentored over 100 students in research
projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate
level. He serves as Associate Editor for Contact
Lens & Anterior Eye, Associate Topical Editor
for Optometry & Vision Science and sits on the
editorial board of both Clinical & Experimental
Optometry and Eye & Contact Lens. A Council
Member of the International Society for Contact
Lens Research, he is also a member of the
Clinical and Scientific Advisory Committee of the
Center for Eye Health, UNSW. A regular speaker
at scientific and educational meetings worldwide,
he also appears as an expert on the ocular
surface on TV and radio.
Dr Shehzad Naroo
is a Reader at Aston
University. Shehzad’s
research interests include
laser refractive surgery,
cataract and lens surgery,
intraocular lenses, corneal
biomechanics, contact lenses, sports vision and
business aspects of UK eye health care. In the
last 5 years he has brought in over £1 million in
research funding as principal investigator.
He has authored and co-authored around 150
publications (including peer-reviewed, editorials,
textbook chapters, non-peer-reviewed etc.). He
is programme director for the Optometry and
Clinical Practice BSc degree. He is Editor-inChief of the journal ‘Contact Lens and Anterior
Eye’ and in 2014 he was made an Honorary
Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association.
He is the Global President of the International
Association of Contact Lens Educators. He is a
Visiting Professor at the King Saud University in
Riyadh. In 2015 he was given the ‘International

She was recently named the 2015 Volunteer of
the Year for MedShare, helping to “Bridge the

COOPERVISION
The evolution of the contact lens world
over the past three decades has been
remarkable, with dramatic improvements
in material biocompatibility, improved lens
designs, simplified lens care systems and
flexible and convenient modalities of wear.
However, our approach to the aftercare
examination remains conservative, with
our general modus operandi rooted in the
the early, difficult years of rigid and HEMA
lens fitting. Perhaps it is time to rethink
our approach to contact lens aftercare.
Current evidence in relation to contact
lens complications, patient education and
compliance will be reviewed, and a revised
approach to contact lens aftercare will be
considered from a clinical perspective. It is
concluded that the frequency of aftercare
examinations could be extended to one
year for reusable lenses and two years for
daily disposable lenses.
Nathan Efron is Research
Professor in the Institute
of Health and Biomedical
Innovation at the
Queensland University of Technology, and holds
a joint appointment in the School of Optometry
and Vision Science. He is currently President of
the Australian College of Optometry and VicePresident of the International Society for Contact
Lens Research. Professor Efron has previously
served as President of both the Cornea and
Contact Lens Society of Australia (1981) and
the British Contact Lens Association (1997). He
lectures extensively world-wide, particularly in
the field of the ocular response to contact lens
wear, and has published over 850 scientific
papers, abstracts and textbook chapters, and
has written/edited 16 books — his most recent
being ‘Contact Lens Complications, 3rd Edition’
(Butterworth-Heinemann, 2012). Professor Efron
has won numerous research awards, including
the BCLA Gold Medal (2001), the American
Academy of Optometry’s Glenn Fry Award
(2010), and Optometry Australia’s H Barry Collin
Research Medal (2015). In 2015, Professor Efron
was made a Companion in the General Division
of the Order of Australia, which is Australia’s
highest national civilian honour.

Momenteel werkt Fokko bij NKL Contactlenzen
als hoofd van de Professional Service afdeling.
Hij houdt zich onder andere bezig met
lensontwikkeling en het geven van trainingen.
Op dit moment werkt Sander als optometrist bij
NKL Contactlenzen, waar hij nauw betrokken
is bij het ontwikkelen van nieuwe producten en
verantwoordelijk is voor het opzetten en geven
van trainingen.

Scleral lenses were the “first” contact
lenses, yet until recently, these designs
were practically never used outside
specialist hospital situations. Advances
in materials and manufacturing
methods over the last few years have
prompted a massive resurgence of
interest in utilising the unique properties of these larger lenses to address
a range of vision correction and
therapeutic problems. The speakers in
this session will illustrate how several
challenging clinical situations, such as
ocular surface disease and irregular
astigmatism, can be managed by considering a scleral lens approach and
describe a future where these devices
are widely used in general practice as
well as, perhaps, fulfilling additional
therapeutic roles in areas including
drug delivery and stem cell therapy.
In recognising the advantages of this
“new” technology however, it will be
critical to maintain a sense of proportion by recognising circumstances
where a scleral lens is not appropriate
and so an holistic approach to their use
is recommended.

of the recent TFOS International Workshop on
Contact Lens Discomfort. He has published over
100 papers on contact lens related topics and
lectured widely on the subject. His research
interests include contact lens design and fitting
and factors influencing contact lens success.
Why do contact lenses perform as
they do – and does it matter whether
they are more mobile or fairly static?
Over the last few years we have
utilised new technologies such as
Optical Coherence Tomography and
dual placido projection to better understand the topography of the peripheral
cornea and its interface with the sclera.
Modelling allows the stresses on the
lens to be better predicted, but how can
this knowledge allow us to improve
lens fit and reduce complications in the
future. The evidence to inform initial
lens selection, settling time, comfort,
centration, movement on blink, lag and
push-up and vision will be explored.

Presbyopia correction with contact lenses
can be managed using different solutions
involving fitting multifocal bifocal or
monofocal contact lenses. The number
of patients fitted with contact lenses for
presbyopia with multifocal contact lenses
or monovision after the age of 45 years of
age has increased steadily over the past
5 years in several countries including the
Netherlands. However, 80% of patients
over the age of 45 years of age still are
fitted with monofocal lenses. Considering
the rapid changes in the demographic
distribution of the European population
the potential of the presbyopic population is very significant. Moreover, this is
a tremendous opportunity for eye care
professionals in countries with a high
penetration of contact Lens use in the
general population as it is the case for the

is Associate Dean
for Research, and
Director of the Borish
Center for Ophthalmic Research at the Indiana
University (IU) School of Optometry. After
receiving his OD degree, Dr. Kollbaum worked
in a private multidisciplinary practice in Iowa
prior to returning to IU where he received a
Masters degree in Clinical Research and a PhD
degree in Vision Science. Following receiving his
research training he accepted a faculty position
at IU, where he teaches and performs research
in the areas of contact lenses and optics. He
is also currently on the Board of Directors of
the American Academy of Optometry and the
American Optometric Foundation.

independent regulatory
and educational
consultant based in
Boulder, Colorado. He
received his Optometry
degree and PhD in Vision Science from Aston
University in Birmingham, England. He was a
Professor at The Ohio State University College
of Optometry for 15 years and taught a number
of courses, including geometric optics and
ophthalmic optics. Previously, he spent 8 years
at the University of California at Berkeley and is
currently Adjunct Professor at the University of
Houston College of Optometry. His company,
Ridgevue Publishing, produces interactive
educational materials for the iPad.
His research interests include myopia, low vision,
presbyopia, and refractive surgery. He received
grants from the National Eye Institute to study
adult myopia progression and several training
grants supporting optometry students in a
summer internship program.
He is former President and Development
Director of the American Optometric Foundation,
a philanthropic organization devoted to the
advancement of optometric education and
research. He is Associate Editor of Ophthalmic
and Physiological Optics and the former Editor
of Optometry and Vision Science. He served
a four-year term on the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration’s Ophthalmic Devices Panel
and is a consultant for a number of ophthalmic,
surgical, and pharmaceutical companies.

Gabriëlle Janssen
studeerde in 1998 af aan
de Hogeschool Utrecht
als optometrist. In 2010
heeft zij haar Fellowship
of the American Academy
of Optometry behaald en
in 2012 heeft zij haar post-HBO Bedrijfskundig
zorgmanagement opleiding afgerond.
Op verschillende intra- en extramurale
werkplekken heeft zij zich verdiept in de
verschillende aspecten van de optometrie
en in de bedrijfsvoering van oogheelkundige
afdelingen. Momenteel zet zij zich als voorzitter
van de OVN in om de positie te versterken van de
optometrie in de oogzorgketen.
Het delen van kennis vindt zij één van de
belangrijke onderdelen van professioneel
handelen; zo heeft zij onder andere de e-learning
cursus “Complicaties bij contactlenzen” voor
de Algemene Nederlandse Vereniging voor
Contactlensspecialisten (ANVC) ontwikkeld
en heeft zij zich vanaf 2000 ingezet om een
optometrie-opleiding in Vietnam op te zetten
welke in 2013 is geopend.
In onze Xperience center organiseren
wij een korte sessie over de verschillende RGP ontwerpen die er momenteel beschikbaar zijn. Niet alleen
geven wij inzicht in de verschillende
ontwerpen maar vertellen wij u ook
waarvoor bepaalde ontwerpeigenschappen specifiek dienen en wat hun
toepassing in de praktijk is. Zaken als
lensrand ontwerp, perifere vorm en
diameterkeuze komen allemaal aan

misperception of risk. He will take an
evidence-based approach to the risk
of corneal infiltrative events in contact
lenses, the relative risk in children, and
for overnight orthokeratology.
Gabrielle Janssen will discuss how
these data can be incorporated into
discussions with ophthalmologists
and general practitioners so that
contact lens professionals can answer
assertions that certain lenses are not
safe, a therapy has no proven effect, no

Cristian Mertz received
his optometry degree

(NL). He started working in
several Dutch contactlens
practices specializing in
specialty contact lens
fitting and has focused on
developing Educational and Clinical programs for
companies such as LENS and Microlens Contactlens Technology. He has a special interest
improving the understanding on how contact
lenses function. He is a Fellow of Scleral Lens
Education Society.
In the Dutch and Belgian market,
contact lens specialists and optometrist
need to deal with other eyecare stakeholders. In daily practice they sometimes find themselves in discussions
with both patients and other health
professionals including ophthalmologists. Topics that are often contentious
include the age at which children can
wear contact lenses, orthokeratology,
lens choices (RGP or Soft), hours of
wear, and myopia control.

LYNDON JONES
Myopia is a public health issue for
many countries in East Asia and the
data predicts a similar future for many
countries in the rest of the world. In East
Asian countries such as China, Taiwan,
Singapore and Hong Kong, some 80%
of 17 year olds suffer from myopia.
Western countries such as USA have
also registered a significant increase in
myopia in the past few decades. As a
consequence of the rising prevalence, the
prevalence of high myopia (at least –6D)
and its associated complications such
as myopic macular degeneration, retinal
detachment, cataract and glaucoma
are on the rise. There is an urgent need
to limit the rising burden of myopia by
developing interventions and strategies to
slow the progression of myopia and delay
or even prevent the onset of myopia.
So what should we be doing? It is now
known that it is feasible to impact myopia
onset and progression with optical,
pharmaceutical and environmental
interventions and there are new
approaches under investigation. Also of
promise are data indicating that certain
environmental strategies could reduce
the incidence of new myopia. However,

whilst there is little debate over the need
to better control and manage myopia,
there exist challenges in developing and
making available such myopia control
interventions to the populations. Also, it is
increasingly becoming apparent that the
approach to controlling and managing
myopia needs to be multi-faceted
involving possibly more than a single
approach and engaging all care providers
such as eye care practitioners, general
medical practitioners, paediatricians,
industry, parents, schools, community,
governments, councils and the myopic
individuals themselves.
This session aims to inform the
participants on:
1.Current evidence for myopia
control with optical, therapeutic and
environmental approaches
2.New developments/approaches to
tackle myopia control and important
unanswered questions
3.What is needed to make myopia
control a reality: path to product,
challenges, approaches/strategies to
tackle the burden

Lyndon Jones is a
Science, University
Research Chair and
at the University of Waterloo. He graduated
in Optometry from the University of Wales
in 1985 and gained his PhD in Chemical
Engineering from the Biomaterials Research
Unit at Aston University, Birmingham, UK in
1998. His research interests primarily focus on
the interaction of contact lens materials with the
ocular environment, dry eye and ocular drug
delivery. He has authored over 300 refereed
and professional papers, one text-book and
given over 700 invited lectures at conferences
worldwide, in over 30 countries.
NOEL BRENNAN
Prior to joining Johnson
& Johnson, Noel was
Reader at the University
of Melbourne and then
ran his own research
consulting company for
16 years. He is a Senior
Fulbright Alumnus and a
Max Shapero Memorial Lecture Awardee from
the American Academy of Optometry. He has
over 300 publications including more than 100
peer-reviewed papers, as well as educational
articles, refereed abstracts, industry reports and
patents, and presented more than 400 lectures
internationally, including paid invited lectures in
over 30 countries. He is known for the following:

Vision Cooperative Research Centre. She is also
a Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of New
South Wales, Australia. She has been actively
researching myopia for approximately 12 years.
In addition, she is also involved in post graduate
supervision and manages the Intellectual Property portfolio of the Institute. She has over 50
articles in peer reviewed journals, has authored
several book chapters and has delivered many
podium presentations.

Dr Back graduated from
the School of Optometry
University NSW in 1981
and obtained his PhD
in 1997 from the same
University. Dr Back held a
number of positions in the
School of Optometry between 1983 and 2001
at the CCLRU and the Cooperative Research
Centre for Eye Research & Technology in product
development and lens design programs. He was
also the architect of regional industry funded
continuing education programs in contact lenses
(APCLEP) and presbyopia (ICEE) delivered to
over 20,000 practitoners throughout the Asia
Pacific region from 1990 to 2001.
From 2002 Dr Back continued his focus on
contact lens product development in California
at Ocular Sciences as Director Clinical Research
until its acquisition by CooperVision in 2005. Dr
Back continued at CooperVision where he held
the position of Vice President of R&D for 6 years
from 2007-2012. During this time he led the
development of CooperVision’s family of Proclear
and silicone hydrogel products, including
Proclear 1 day, Avaira, Biofinity and My Day. In
2013 Dr Back was appointed Chief Technology
Officer at CooperVision to oversee the medium to
long term research and technology strategy for
the Company.

microbes and biomaterials. He has
established several animal and cellbased models for studying contact
lens adverse events and biomaterial

Helmer Schweizer is
a trained optometrist
(Germany), specialized in
contact lenses. He joined
the CL industry after some
years in private practice,
now works for more than
25 years in industry. He held positions in professional affairs, R&D, new business development,
marketing and sales etc. From 2003 to 2009 he
was president of EUROMCONTACT and is again,
since 2011. Is chairman of the European Contact
Lens Forum (ECLF) since 2007. Holds two MBA
degrees (Robert H. Smith school of Business,
University of Maryland, USA and the Lorange
Institute of Business in Zurich, Switzerland).
Teaches CLs at the school of optometry in Novi
Sad (Serbia) as visiting Professor and in part in
Velika Gorica (Croatia). Published articles, exhibited posters, wrote book chapters and is presenting and doing workshops in many countries and
at a great number of congresses. Recipient of the
EFLCIN Award 2012 and IACLE contact lens educator of year for EURMEA in 2015. In his spare
time, he enjoys his family, sailing (two times
European and Swiss champion) and skiing.

is Niels in 2002 bij GfK aan de slag gegaan. Hij
had onder meer een coördinerende rol bij de
overgang van veldwerk naar elektronische dataleveringen. Als consultant is Niels sinds 2006
verantwoordelijk voor het Klein Huishoudelijke
panel waarin hij vrijwel alle fabrikanten bediend.
Vanaf eind 2008 is hij betrokken geweest bij het
opstarten van een aantal nieuwe markten waar-
onder de optiekmarkt. Inmiddels bedient hij voor
deze markt zowel de retail- als de industriekant.
Als fervent fietser is Niels sinds 2011 verantwoordelijk voor een aantal grote fietsfabrikanten waaronder Batavus, Sparta, Gazelle, Giant, en Trek.
Vanaf 2014 is hij tevens verantwoordelijk voor
één van GfK’s laatst geopende markten, namelijk
die van autobanden. In alle bovengenoemde
markten heeft Niels een uitgebreide expertise
in Point of Sales (POS) Tracking onderzoek. Dit
type van kwantitatief onderzoek brengt markten
in kaart op basis van feitelijke kassa transacties
binnen zowel de fysieke als de online retail.

and he teaches on the same subject area at
undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has
managed an international survey of contact lens
prescribing trends since 1996.
Medallist in 2014 and BCLA Pioneer’s Lecturer in
2015. He is a past chairman and secretary of the
Northern Optometric Society in Manchester, and
is the co-ordinator of the UK optometry electronic
mail forum. He has authored over 200 papers,
primarily relating to the clinical performance
of contact lenses and the nature of the UK and
international contact lens markets, and has
spoken about his work in more than 30 countries
worldwide.

College, London in 1971, Martin served in the

as an educator and clinical adviser on behalf
of both Sauflon and CIBA, and now acts as
Professional Services Consultant for Contamac
Ltd. at their headquarters in Saffron Walden. He

The growth and adoption of new
technology continues to rise at an
exponential rate. While devices such
as smart phones, tablets and personal
computers enable the sharing of
information in new and exciting ways,
the nearly constant use of this powerful
technology can also create ophthalmic
problems such as eye strain, dry eye
and headaches. Contact lens wearers
who spend long periods of time using
digital devices may unknowingly have
poor or incomplete blink patterns as
well as blink less frequently. These
factors can place an increasing
demand on the contact lens material
used for vision correction. To meet the
changing demands of patients in an
increasingly screen-centric world, new
approaches to material development
are required. This presentation will
discuss a new approach in creating a
contact lens material that addresses
the critical factors of comfort, vision
and health that are important to all
contact lens wearers. Specifically the
presentation will cover the chemistry
and manufacturing of Bausch + Lomb
Ultra with MoistureSeal technology.
Factors such as siloxane chain length
and functionality and their relationship
to modulus and oxygen transmission
will be covered in detail. In addition,
the unique 2 phase polymerization
process of creating a silicone
framework followed by infusing PVP
in and around the silicone will be
discussed. The resulting bulk and
surface properties such as water
content, modulus, Dk/t, contact
angle as well as coefficient of friction
will be presented. In addition, the
incorporation of aspheric optics as
well the ability of this material to retain
moisture will be reviewed.

Ectasia, thinning, vascularization,
abnormal deposits, vacuoles, cysts,
and nodules are a variety of corneal
findings that we encounter when
examining our patients. Not only
is it our responsibility to properly
identify and diagnose the condition
contributing to these findings, but we
also have to coordinate treatment and
long term management. The speakers
will discuss the management of
progressive corneal diseases ranging
from keratoconus, pellucid marginal
degeneration, map dot dystrophy,
recurrent corneal erosion and
Salzman’s nodular degeneration using
contact lenses, topical medications,
and co-management with corneal
specialists.

(Croatia). Published articles, exhibited posters,
wrote book chapters and is presenting and doing
workshops in many countries and at a great
number of congresses. Recipient of the EFLCIN
Award 2012 and IACLE contact lens educator of
year for EURMEA in 2015. In his spare time, he
enjoys his family, sailing (two times European
and Swiss champion) and skiing.

GET IN CHARGE OF THE FUTURE OF CONTACT LENSES
PHILIP MORGAN
In this session, five key opinion leaders
in the contact lens area will gaze into
their crystal balls to discuss and debate
the future of contact lenses. It seems
clear that we are on the cusp of some
interesting opportunities for contact
lenses but some predictions (like flying
cars) do not become reality whereas
others (like smartphones) have a large
and sustained global impact. We hope
to sort out the technologies which we
will see in the next few years from
those which will not survive. The five
areas under discussion will be:
1. Better fitting lenses
2. Better comfort via new materials
3. Diminished inflammatory response
4. Disease monitoring, biosensing,
drug delivery
5. Entertainment/information delivery
Each topic will receive a
comprehensive review which will allow
us to draw up a blueprint for contact
lens developments for the next decade.

Jason J. Nichols, OD
MPH PhD FAAO is the
Assistant Vice President
for Industry Research
Development in the Office
of the Vice President for
Research and Economic
Development at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham (2014).
He also actively conducts ocular surface and
contact lens research and trains PhD students
and Fellows. Prior to his current position, Dr.
Nichols was the Kevin McDaid Vision Source
Professor (with tenure) at the University of
Houston College of Optometry between 2011 and
2014, and an Associate Professor (with tenure) at
The Ohio State University College of Optometry
from 2004-2011. While at University of Houston,
he founded The Ocular Surface Institute (TOSI)
and was its Chief Operating Officer; TOSI had a
team of 20 scientists, project managers, faculty
and graduate students dedicated in translational
ocular surface based research. Dr. Nichols
received his undergraduate degree at Hope
College (BA, biology), and Doctor of Optometry,
Master’s in Public Health (epidemiology) and
PhD (vision science) all from the Ohio State
University.
Dr. Nichols has received research funding
from the National Eye Institute of the National
Institutes of Health to study dry eye diseases
including meibomian gland disease, dry eye
and contact lens-related dry eye. He has also
received funding from the American Optometric
Foundation, in addition to a variety of industrial
partners in excess of $5 million as Principal
Investigator, and $6 million as Co-Investigator.
He writes and lectures extensively on contact
lenses and ocular surface conditions such as
dry eye and meibomian gland disease. He has
authored over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts,
75 clinical manuscripts, 175 abstracts, and has
given over 200 lectures worldwide on these
topics.
He is currently Editor of Contact Lens Spectrum
and Contact Lenses Today®, whose publications
reach over 50,000 eyecare practitioners
worldwide. Dr. Nichols also serves as an
Associate Editor for Eye and Contact Lens,
is a topical editor for Optometry and Vision
Science, and is on the editorial board of Current
Ophthalmology Reports. Dr. Nichols is a dual
diplomate in both the American Academy of
Optometry’s (AAO) sections of Public Health and
Environmental Optometry and Cornea, Contact
Lenses, and Refractive Technology. He is also
the Chair of the AAO’s Research Committee
and is a member of the Board of Directors of
the American Optometric Foundation—the
philanthropic arm of the American Academy
of Optometry. He also Chaired of the Tear Film
and Ocular Surface (TFOS) Society’s Medical
and Scientific Advisory Board, and the TFOS
International Workshop on Contact Lens
Discomfort (2013). His awards include three
Ezell Fellowships and the Borish Award from the
American Academy of Optometry and he was
recently elected as a Distinguished Scholar and
Fellow of the National Academies of Practice.

Graeme Young is Managing Director of Visioncare
Research Ltd, and an
honorary professor at
Aston University, School
of Life & Health Sciences.
Visioncare Research is a UK-based contract
research organisation (CRO) specialising in
eyecare research and which has conducted
over 400 clinical studies, nearly 100 of which
have been multi-center studies in Europe and
N. America. After graduating in Optometry from
City University, London, he spent six years in
private practice in Jersey in the Channel Islands.
He returned to England in order to study for a
higher degree receiving a Masters degree and
later a PhD for contact lens related research
projects. Prior to forming Visioncare Research,
Dr Young worked for Hydron Europe as Director
of clinical research and later for Allergan Optical
as UK Director of R&D. He is a member of the
International Society for Contact Lens Research
(ISCLR), an ex-president of the British Contact
Lens Association (BCLA) and was a member
of the recent TFOS International Workshop on
Contact Lens Discomfort. He has published over
100 papers on contact lens related topics and
lectured widely on the subject. His research
interests include contact lens design and fitting
and factors influencing contact lens success.

over 20 years and a panel member of
the NJ Commission for the Blind and
Visually Impaired. She is a member of

CLOSING LECTURE NCC 2016 GET IN CHARGE
Van get in Charge maakt van Setten
zijn eigen verassende interpretatie,
bedoeld om jezelf als optiek- , maar
vooral als Retail- professional, scherp
te zetten en te houden. Het begrip
belevenis, wat inmiddels net zo’ n
container begrip aan het worden is
als “goede service” wordt uit elkaar
gerafeld en eens goed onder de loep
genomen. Dansen in plaats van
vechten met je klant, “en dus” in plaats
van “ ja, maar”, wat er vaak insluipt
wordt door van Setten genadeloos in
het licht gezet.

je bij zijn!
