Strange but true!
A bear was bought from a Russian circus by a tourist agent after he
was asked to provide an American visitor with a “wild bear hunt”.
The bear was released into Moscow’s Perdelkino Forest and the
tourist got ready to hunt him down. As the hunter closed in on his
prey, a postman passed by on his bike, saw the bear and tumbled off
in surprise. Recalling his Big Top training, the bear grabbed the bike
and pedalled off! The American later sued the tourist agent for fraud!

IN THE early 1900s, my parents – who
were born and lived all their lives in

They had regular outings to Epping Forest

The girls wore long dresses and some had
more daring divided skirts for easier
movement. On carnival days, they
decorated the cycles with coloured paper
threaded round the spokes, and paper
rosettes over the handlebars.

n 1993, River Phoenix, a young actor who
had spoken out on the evil of drugs,
collapsed on an LA pavement, after
having taken a lethal cocktail of drugs.
Many fans believe he had his drink spiked,
but that was not the case. River had taken
drugs of his own free will and lost his life to
them. This is his story…
6
The early years
On August 23, 1970, River was born in the
commune where his parents used to live. River’s
father John was made archbishop of a religious cult
and the family set out for the jungles of South
America to spread the Word. By the age of five,
living in total poverty, River and his sister Rain
were forced to beg on the streets of Caracas,
Venezuela. At night the family slept on the beach.
“It was disgusting,” River recalled afterwards. “We
were living in a shack. It had no toilet and it was
infested with rats.”
7
River’s dad became
disillusioned with the cult. The Phoenix family,
which by now included sister Liberty and brother
Leaf, returned to the US.
In 1978, after the birth of River’s youngest sister,
named Summer, his mother Arlyn moved the family
to Hollywood so the children could earn a living as
performers. “We had a vision that our children
could captivate the world,” she enthused. River’s
agent quickly found him work on a number of
commercials, but River hated doing them. “I felt the
constant lying, smiling on cue and the product
naming was going to drive me crazy,” he said.
Fortunately, he got a part in a popular TV series
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Then, at 15, he
appeared in the sci-fi film Explorers. The following
year he won the role that made him famous, Chris
Chambers in Stand By Me.

Fame and Fortune
Suddenly River was a Hollywood name and girls
everywhere were falling for his good looks. But the
young actor was determined not to let the success
go to his head. “People get lost,” he said, “they
think they have it under control but their lives are in
pieces.” The film offers rolled in. His next film was
Mosquito Coast, with Harrison Ford.
His Oscar nomination for Running on Empty
confirmed River’s position on the A-list of
Hollywood actors. A strict vegetarian, River used
70
75
his success to promote the benefits of a ‘clean’
lifestyle and spoke out against the fur trade and the
destruction of the rainforests. And he talked about
how easy it is for people in the movie business to
slip into drug abuse. “You don’t have to seek it
out,” he said, “it finds you… It’s so accessible. I
hate all that.”
Although by 1989 River’s career was going from
strength to strength, his personal life was a very
different story. Sometime, somewhere, River had
begun dabbling with drugs and had quickly become
addicted. The Hollywood publicity machine kept
the news from his fans. Behind the scenes, River’s
life was spiralling out of control. In 1993, from the
set of his last unfinished movie, Dark Blood, he left
a message on a friend’s answerphone saying: “I’m
having a hard time keeping my head above water in
this crazy business.”
The last hours
One evening after filming, River had met up with
some friends at a club in LA. During the night he
became hyperactive and suddenly began to vomit
and started to shudder violently. Paramedics took
him to a hospital. Blood samples indicated valium
and cocaine at high levels. After 20 minutes in the
emergency room, River was pronounced dead on
31 October, 1993. A medic at the scene said: “It
was the classic cocaine overreaction. It just nails
people and stops the heart.”

Wie van de drie briefschrijvers krijgt het advies om zijn/haar probleem met anderen te
bespreken?
A Amy
B Gijandra
C Leo
WHY CAN’T I KISS?
Q: My boyfriend finished with me the day after our first kiss. He went
round telling everybody that I couldn’t kiss and some of his friends are
now calling me ‘fish lips’.
What did I do wrong? I don’t think I’ll ever kiss anybody again.
Amy (17)
A: The only thing you did wrong was get involved with this lad in the first
place. He obviously used your kissing encounter as a way of backing out
without making himself look stupid.
He was completely insensitive to your feelings and is clearly not worth
worrying over. He said what he did to try and impress his mates and as for
them calling you fish lips, try to ignore it.
Don’t let this boy put you off, I’m sure there are lots of lads who would like to
share a snog with you.
FORBIDDEN LOVE
Q: I am an Asian girl and my religion does not allow boyfriends. My
parents are also very strict about this. I am not allowed to date anybody
and they worry when I talk to boys.
I have started going out with a boy and I have fallen in love with him. If
my parents found out, they would be very disappointed in me and would
never let me see him again. I can’t talk to anybody in my family.
What can I do?
Gijandra (16)
A: You need to tell your parents and explain the situation. They might
understand. They would be more disappointed if they found out you were lying to
them.
Tell them how you feel about this boy and suggest a meeting. They might like
him. Chances are they won’t react as badly as you expect. If your parents truly
aren’t happy about you having a boyfriend and feel you are betraying your
religion you may have to decide if your relationship with this boy is really worth
the hassle.
I’M SO SHY
Q: Can you help me? I’m scared of meeting people. I’m a shy, quiet person
and can’t mix very well with new people. I like reading and music and am
happy with my own company. But others of my age seem to be going out
and having a good time and I’m worried I’m missing out. I have a few
close friends I get on well with, but am beginning to wonder if I’m normal.
Shouldn’t I be going to pubs and clubs?
Leo (18)
A: The first thing is, don’t worry! You’re normal! Lots of people suffer from
shyness, and not everybody likes to live it up in a crowded pub or noisy
nightclub. It’s not always the fun others make it out to be.
If you do want to go out more, why not ask your friends if you could join them
next time they have a date? If they’re good friends, they wouldn’t mind and
would probably welcome your company. But be positive and you may be
surprised at how much you have to offer others.

FLIC EVERETT, 28, a journalist from Sale, in
Manchester, says:
“I dyed my hair blonde 10 years ago to attract the man
I fancied. I decided I was going to go for it and make
myself impossible to ignore. So I paid ₤40 to have my
dark brown hair lightened to golden yellow, and I
bought a red dress. I need hardly say, it worked a treat.
Blonde hair really did seem to have an effect on
men. I loved it. Complete strangers would wink and
grin for no reason. For a couple of months, I adored
the attention. The bloke in question was now keen.
Whenever I went out I got chatted up, and people
referred to me as “a blonde”. I felt like a girl in an
advert, all light-hearted and carefree. My friends said
it suited me, too. But that was before the roots started
showing.
After a few weeks, I looked like a tragic heroin
6
addict. Another ₤40 later, my hair was back to its
golden hue, but my love for blonde was fading. I also
began to notice that all these newly-keen men paid far
more attention to my breast size than my IQ size. They
assumed that a blonde was as dim as a one-watt bulb,
and were accordingly amazed when I said anything
even half-interesting. I began to look longingly at
pictures of Isabella Rossellini, the way I’d once looked
at pictures of Michelle Pfeiffer. And one day, I bought
a packet of dark brown dye, and went back to normal.
It was such a relief.
No-one looked at me in the street, no-one talked to
my chest. People sometimes even listened when I
spoke. I missed the attention for a while, but it hadn’t 7
really been me anyway. As a brunette, I had a lot more
fun, I didn’t feel like I had to prove myself. And as for
the bloke I’d dyed it for – he went off with another
brunette in the end.”

Christian Gardiner, UK head of colour at
Vidal Sassoon, says:
“Blonde hair is younger-looking, it reflects light across
the face, and makes hair look thicker. Going blonde is
as good as having a holiday. It’s a complete change –
400009-1-630-515o
10
70
women often change their make-up and their clothes,
too. Blondes aren’t stupid, but they do get more
attention. Women nearly always love being blonde,
but sometimes their husbands don’t, because that extra
attention makes them jealous. Going blonde makes a
woman stand tall and gives her extra confidence. I
think every woman should be blonde at some time in
her life.”
Liz Baker, a Colour Me Beautiful consultant,
says:
“Women go blonde generally to look and feel brighter
and because it’s more noticeable. But some women
come in and say they don’t want to be blonde any
more, because they aren’t taken as seriously at work as
before. And then there’s your wardrobe. If you go
blonde, you’ll find different clothes suit you. Darker or
bright colours can make you look washed out – navy
and lighter shades work well. However, pastels aren’t
very professional – which is another reason blondes
may not be taken seriously.”
Hal Beloff, a psychologist at Edinburgh
University, says:
“The attraction of blondness is all about first
impression. After the first meeting, you want to know
what kind of person she is – and that goes way beyond
hair colour. Usually, women who dye their hair blonde
are also the women who want to be appreciated by
men, who smile and laugh at men’s jokes. Men may be
attracted to the childlike quality of blonde hair,
because it implies that the blonde woman won’t be
their rival. And if you’ve bothered to dye your hair,
that may well be true!”

A BUSY river bridge in southwestern Taiwan collapsed

A 100-metre section of the four-lane bridge, which
connects the cities of Kaohsiung and Pingtung, fell but the
road surface was not under water, and 16 stranded

A Kaohsiung county fire department official told cable

automobiles fall into the water, and Kaohsiung-bound
travellers saying that no cars had fallen off the bridge into
the Gaoping River. About three hours after the collapse at

department rescuers were searching downstream for signs
of vehicles that may have been washed down the river, the
official said.

Puppy Love
At just 14, Shad Moss, also known as rap star ‘Lil Bow Wow’, has topped the US rap charts with
‘Bounce with me’ and sold more than 2 million copies of his first album Beware of dog. He can already
count famous stars as Snoop Doggy Dogg and Madonna among his friends and fans.

H
ow do you entertain the world’s
coolest kid on his visit to London?
When he’s at home in America, Shad
parties with Puff Daddy, works with
5
stars like Snoop Doggy Dogg and Destiny’s
Child and sometimes meets Michael Jackson
and Michael Jordan at the same party.
Fortunately, like for any 14-year-old kid, a trip
to the Trocadero, London’s biggest games
arcade, is just as exciting.
“London is great,” he says. “I have
been shopping. I bought sneakers, four
computer games and three DVDs. And I
have been playing basketball. When I’m
done rapping, I’m going to play for the
Lakers.” It seems cruel to spoil the kid’s
dreams, but with only 140 centimetres
he is likely to be a bit short for a
basketball player. But not to worry, he
has back-up plans. After graduating
from Harvard University, he says he will
become the biggest rap star on the
planet and then he’ll make movies.
Back in the States, Shad is so hot
that, last month, Madonna was on the
phone. “She said she really wanted me
to do a television show with her. I said:
‘Sure, why not?’ It was crazy, we did two days
of rehearsals for one song. I had to drive her
limo on stage, then I was dancing. She asked me
to make her look good. I said: ‘Madonna, no
7
problem.’”
To Shad, all this celebrity attention seems
35 . It’s probably because he has been in
the rap business for as long as he can remember.
He was five when he talked his mother Teresa
– now his manager and stylist – into taking him
to see Dr. Dre’s Chronic Tour. Snoop Doggy
Dogg spotted him in the crowd and hauled him
on stage. “I went up there, began rapping, and
the crowd started throwing all this money at

me,” he recalls. “Next thing you know, Snoop
wants me backstage. So I went and he and Dr.
Dre asked if I would finish the tour with them.
The next day I was in L.A., opening the show.”
Shad had already taught himself to rap by
watching famous rappers like Ice-T and Tupac
on MTV and singing to his mother’s kitchen
utensils. But it was Snoop Doggy Dogg who
changed his name to ‘Lil Bow Wow’ and gave
him his special hairstyle. A year later he was a
guest artist on Snoop’s
multimillion selling album
Doggystyle and he had
55 contributed a song to Will
Smith’s Wild Wild West
movie soundtrack.
The dope-smoking, foul6
mouthed Snoop may be a bad
60 example, but Shad hasn’t let
fame go to his head. Although
it took a while to get him to
stop playing basketball and sit
down for an interview, he
65 turns out to be polite and wellmannered. “Shad hasn’t
changed,” his mother insists.
“He doesn’t show off about
all the money that he makes, though I had to
stop him buying a diamond watch the other
day.”
Otherwise, Shad is setting a good example to
his young fans. At concerts last year in America,
he was mobbed by hundreds of female fans, but
he says he is still too young for a girlfriend.
What’s more, he has made a point of not
swearing in his songs. “When I rapped on
Doggystyle, Snoop had me cursing. But I don’t
do that anymore. There are a lot of kids out there
who can’t buy records with bad words. My thing
is to make clean music that everybody can buy.”
