ACTIVITEITEN VAN LA PROTECTORA AVILÉS
 Samenwerking met Asiel van Lugo
Dit asiel ligt in de plaats Lugo en is eigendom van een
dierenbeschermingsorganisatie die geen subsidies krijgt.
Het is bij de Spaanse wet verplicht dat elke grote stad een contract
tekent met een asiel om de ongewenste honden kwijt te raken. Het
asiel in Lugo heeft veel contracten afgesloten met de verschillende
naburige gemeenten en krijgt daar zijn inkomsten van. Dit betekent in de praktijk dat er veel
teveel honden binnen komen en de hokken overvol zitten. Ze hebben maar heel weinig adopties en
zijn daardoor genoodzaakt om gemiddeld 1 hond per dag af te maken.
Er verblijven zo'n 300 à 400 honden in kleine, oude, donkere en heel vochtige rennen.
Er is geen speelweide en de honden komen nooit hun hok uit. De rennen worden gereinigd met de
waterslang zonder de honden eruit te halen. De ene dag krijgen de honden brokken en de andere
dag grote stukken brood. Toen wij op bezoek waren was het “brooddag”. De honden laten veel
brood liggen, wat weer lokvoer is voor ratten en muizen.
Wat ons opviel tijdens het bezoek was het enorme geblaf en gehuil van de honden wat echt
wanhopig klonk. We zagen overal achterin de hokken honden opgerold liggen, die zich volledig
hadden afgesloten van de werkelijkheid en in wezen al half dood waren.
De achterste grote ren zit vol grote reuen die niet gecastreerd zijn. Elke beweging daar lokt
irritaties uit wat een tijdbom is voor vechtpartijen met soms rampzalige gevolgen. Er zitten ook
nog veel middelgrote honden in deze ren, die liggen opgekruld op een soort stelling met planken
om maar veilig te zijn voor de grote honden.
La Protectora heeft sinds een paar maanden contact met deze organisatie. Bij ons laatste bezoek
in januari 2016 hadden we een afspraak met de voorzitter van dit bestuur. Alejandra van La
Protectora heeft een lang gesprek met hem gevoerd en vertaalt voor ons. Deze man toonde de wil
om te veranderen en verbeteringen voor de honden door te voeren. Hij wil enkele contracten met
gemeentes gaan beëindigen, zodat hij niet met zo'n enorm overschot aan honden komt te zitten.
Ook gaat hij werken aan castratie/sterilisatie en verhoging van het aantal adopties. Hij wantrouwt
op dit moment buitenlandse organisaties en het is de vraag of we in de toekomst iets voor deze
honden kunnen betekenen. Wij hopen daar natuurlijk wel op.

 Dogcollector in Oles
In mid-2013 we answered the notice from the Civil Guard in Oles, Villaviciosa. It was related to a
woman who had been reported by the neighbors because of the great number of animals housed in
his home. After the visit of official veterinarians of the Administration they told the owner that
would be fined and should get rid of the animals; otherwise the council will execute an eviction
order and will take all of them (orders that are never executed by the lack of responsibility about
animals of most of the Asturian municipalities, but that's another story).
So, we went to this place to try to help those animals to the extent of our possibilities. The first
thing we discovered is how difficult it is to talk with people with Noah Syndrome or animal
hoarding. They are mentally ill people whose desire to protect doesn’t let them see the reality and
understand they can not help all the animals that are in bad conditions. As a consequence they
accumulate them, thinking they are better stacked, chained, without veterinary care or adequate
food, than anywhere else in the "dangerous and evil outside world.”
The first thing we need is the involvement of psychologists or psychiatrists trained to speak in the
right way to them, to help them see the reality, but the truth is we do not have such support as it
is not even considered in the official diseases catalog in our community.
Fortunately, the fear after the missive received by the Ministry of Livestock Farming and Regional
Natural Resources, made her more open to our help. On July 13, 2013 we got to rescue the first
dog, Chispa, a small female that was later adopted in Switzerland. Captain and Hola were the last
ones we got out of there. From then until now 59 dogs and 12 cats were rescued. An achievement
to which we should add that she has also given us almost all females (who refused to give us for
putting them up for adoption) to be sterilized.
The success of the action was based on the citizen response who donated us feed, medicines,
necklaces, mats, ... in order to attend the dogs while they wait to go out; people who foster these
animals when we can get them (many times we have to act on the fly because a dog that she wants
to give during one of our visits may not on the next one) and patience to avoid falling into
discouragement to talk again and again with a wall that is seeing a completely distorted reality
even in his mind is very real.
There are still several animals there that required our help. Some of them, like Lobo or Chulo, are
still waiting for someone to notice them and be adopted. They hope to go out of their cages and
spend the rest of their life in a good, loving home. Others, like Billy, Linda, Luck, … even if they
are the ones "chosen" by the owner, we must continue trying to convince her about transferring
them to us. Anyhow their quality of life has improved thanks to the significant reduction in the
number of animals at the center. Without being complacent, we have to make a positive
assessment of the work that has been done, which will help us to move forward in the work that
lies ahead.
