Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Tested
for Broadcast Cameras
Revolutionary fuel cell technology is currently being tested for broadcast camera
adaptation, and will hopefully make battery packs a thing of the past. What's the
difference between a battery and a fuel cell? A battery merely stores electrons,
but fuel cells make them. In addition, a standard rechargeable brick battery runs
for about two hours, whereas N-Gen can last four to five hours before needing a
refill. Fuel cells are faster, too: a brick battery takes about six hours to recharge,
up to six times longer than it takes to refill an N-Stor canister. This means that
television camera operators will be able to replace three inefficient six-pound
brick batteries with one highly efficient N-Gen system at a total of seven pounds.

Motorola Patents Bacteria Killing Technology
Motorola has patented a cell phone that kills bacteria lodged in the microphone
and earpiece cavities. The phone contains an LED that radiates ultra-violet light
with a wavelength of 250 nanometers, which is particularly lethal to bacteria.
Optical guides inside the phone body steer the UV light into the cavities and

No more cables for HD? WirelessHD, which intends to specify the unlicensed,

STS Reaches for the Sky with
Amazing Double-Truck!
Markertek customer STS is pleased to announce the addition of a new hybrid C/Kuband HD truck to its state-of-the-art fleet of satellite uplink trucks. The new truck has
the combined capabilities of two complete satellite trucks. It features a 4.6meter C-band dish and a separate, 1.8-meter Ku-band dish.
STS President Charles Spoto says the new dual-band truck will be especially useful at
special events where both C-band and Ku-band are needed because “you don’t have
the expense of two trucks traveling to that location.”
“We’ll be able to put up four digital paths at once, where with a normal truck you usually
only have two,” says Spoto. He notes that the reduced costs of space and parking will
be an added benefit to customers.
The new one-of-a-kind truck — designed by the technical crew at STS and built by
Frontline Communications of Florida — can deliver high-definition (HD), standard MPEG2 and analog transmissions. The truck is set up to deliver C-band event broadcasts in HD
or standard definition, as well as satellite news gathering.
The C-band antenna is a dual-offset reflector with rapid-deployment mount assembly, like
the Ku-band transportables on the other two STS trucks. The C-band reflector is made of precision dual-skin monocque with aluminum feed
supports and base mounts. This results in superior stiffness and high performance under wind-loading conditions. The antenna, which is
designed to military specifications, is the highest-quality C-band transportable available.

Carr-Hughes Productions goes Mobile with
Video Production Trailer Built by Markertek!
Greenfield Center, NY - Jim Carr of Carr-Hughes Productions checked in during a breather from being out on
the road producing in their new Markertek-built mobile production trailer, the VPTR-1. "We put 30,000
miles on it covering Supercross for Speed and CBS ... it's a great space to work in and we have received lots of
compliments," said Carr. The Carr-Hughes Mobile Edit Unit features the powerful Avid Adrenaline editing suite to
handle production needs in a comfortable and professional environment. All the equipment is contained in a
custom designed production trailer with full heating and AC onboard as well as conventional work areas
for producers. "We're proud to be bringing this state of art solution to the field," said Jim Carr, Lead Producer and
Director as well as a co-owner of Carr-Hughes. "In addition, with the Air Speed Avid set-up we can acquire, edit and
even play-out instantly, even as we're taking the feed in."

CBS and the Speed Channel over the 17-week 2006

Markertek Sets Motorcycle National Speed Record at Bonneville Salt Flats!
How did a broadcast supply house set a national speed record? Well, Mark, owner/founder
of Markertek, happens to be a motorcycle enthusiast, and he and some friends have a
motorcycle (BMW, Ducati, Jawa, British bikes, new and vintage) club that meets on
Tuesday nights. Last March, they caught ‘World’s Fastest Indian’ starring Anthony
Hopkins at a little movie theatre in Rosendale, NY. Thus inspired, club members Scott
Kolb and Chris Bernard approached Mark about fabricating a 100%-custom
streamliner motorcycle, and entering it in the world motorcycle speed trials at Bonneville
Salt Flats in Utah in September—only five months later! Could it be done?
It could! In short, on September 4, 2006, they broke the national land speed record for
a partial streamliner motorcycle with a 100%-custom frame in the 125cc class at 119.368
miles per hour. The previous record was set in 1978 at 115 miles per hour.
What’s their secret? Mark says “it was true Markertek ‘get-it-done’ philosophy, pairing brilliant shop
technology with plenty of coffee. And TecNec gaffers tape.”
Other highlights from the event included the fastest
motorcycle record, set by seven-time AMA flat-track
champion Chris Carr at 354 mph out and a return speed of
347 mph in the Bub Streamliner.

Woodstock Film Festival & Markertek Score Big Win
The Woodstock Film Festival celebrated its seventh year of 'fiercely independent' film this year. From October 11th through
October 15th, film industry players came together over an outstanding collection of over 150 films, panels, concerts and special events in
Woodstock, NY and the neighboring towns of Rhinebeck, Hunter, and Rosendale.

The roster of international films includes seven world premieres, two North American premieres, seven U.S. premieres, nine
East Coast premieres and fifteen New York premieres. Submissions were up nearly one-third over last year, to some 2,000, reflecting
the continued growth of the festival's role in the independent film world. The overall increase in submissions included a substantial rise in
world cinema and documentary entries. This year's festival attracted over 15,000 visitors over the five-day span.
The 7th Annual Woodstock Film Festival welcomed filmmakers and industry leaders alike to its annual gala in New York's beautiful Hudson
Valley to packed houses and rave reviews. As Presenting Sponsor, Markertek was proud to share in the success of the WFF's best

Little Known Quick Time Feature
Are you a QuickTime Pro 7 user? If so, you may not be aware of a cool time-saving feature that's "flown under the radar"... until now! QuickTime Pro 7 provides the
ability to record audio or video directly to a QuickTime file. If you just need a quick capture, you won't need to use a third-party application to make it happen. You
can go Pro at Apple’s web site for just $29.99. Simply connect your camera or mic, and launch QuickTime Pro. Pull down the File menu, and choose "New Movie Recording"
or "New Audio Recording", and a new preview window will open. Click the red "Record" button on the bottom, and away you go! Go Pro, and you will be able to
record faster than you can say "Podcast"!
DV Black Level
Problem: I have noticed that some DV devices output black level at 0 IRE. I am accustomed to the black level of video at 7.5 IRE. When I edit footage from broadcast
equipment the black is set at 7.5. When I mix it with DV footage where the level is 0 IRE, I have a mismatch. What is the best way to deal with this?
Solution You can use a transcoder which allows the black level to be set at 7.5 IRE. The LAIRD LTM-6000D will work very well for this. If you have a transcoder that
keeps the level at 0 IRE then you can pass the signal through any good Time Base Corrector and the black level will be added on the output.
SDI Monitoring
Problem: I need a low cost solution to monitor my SDI signal while recording to my VTR.
Solution: What is needed here is a 'sniffer'. A sniffer is an industry term for a means to visually check the signal and make sure it is as desired. Delvcam makes a cost
effective 7” dual LCD SDI/Composite Video rack-mount monitor (DELV-2LCD-7XLS). This 'sniffer' works perfectly for composite and SDI monitoring and is just $1395.99.
SDI to DV Signal Conversion
Many editors really appreciate the world of DV-based edit systems such as Avid Express and Vegas Video. These powerful NLE systems work on most PCs & Macs and
allow a desktop approach to editing. There are situations when a project shot in SDI needs to be edited in DV for presentation and cost effective reasons. The solution
is a high quality signal transcoder such as the LAIRD LTM-6000D. This product will accept all analog and SDI signals and convert them to Firewire (IEEE1394) DV
signals. It handles audio and video in digital and analog formats. The 6000D also works as a stand-alone signal converter which smoothly works between the analog
world and digital.
Long Haul HDMI Runs
Problem: I need to make a long run HDMI connection, but heard there is a limitation on HDMI cable lengths. What can I use to get good long distance HDMI cable runs?
Solution: The standard length is 5 meters or 15 feet. However, there are several manufacturers of HDMI cable extender products which will drive “long haul” HDMI cables.
I would suggest you purchase them from a reputable distributor that has tested and confirmed their operations. An excellent piece is the Ocean Matrix Long Haul
HDMI Repeater. Model number: OMX-HDMIREP. It works in-line, includes a power supply and typical extended run lengths are up to 150 feet.

This one does it all and then some! Today’s studios and post houses are operating under
all sorts of hybrid conditions between digital and analog. Many still have clients bringing
in anything from mini-DV to Betacam to VHS. When it comes to signal conversion, Laird’s
Inertia is the answer! It has I/Os for SDI, FireWire, Component, S-Video and Composite in
addition to AES/EBU digital audio and 2-channel analog XLR audio.
A clever feature of the Inertia is its simultaneous outputs. There’s enough outputs on this
thing to sink a ship! No matter what you’re converting to and from, all outputs are always
live and there are two sets for each video format. We use this feature to make client DVD
dubs while dumping out our master, and use another Inertia output to confidence-monitor
the process.

How it Works
Spring tension holds the bit at the front of the shaft, for this reason
backward pressure at the front of the bit can cause the bit to slightly
recess and not seat to full depth in the screw. In applications where
screws are rusted, extremely tight or require high torque load we
recommend using a standard Phillips tip tool for initial breaking
away and for final tightening.

The Power Tower Plus is a cylindrical pull-up system
with AC, RJ45, USB, VGA & Mini Stereo Audio connections for use in a flash. Constructed black anodized
aluminum and rugged black ABS plastic. It’s the ideal
way to finish your AV installation providing maximum
connectivity in the smallest possible footprint.
A conference table is often a central element of many AV presentation
systems. The challenge facing system designers is to provide inputs in
tabletops for computer video, audio, network, and power in the most
unobtrusive fashion possible. Multiple connecting cables often need
to be managed above and beneath table surfaces. Once installed,
simply press the rocking cover, pull up the assembly to expose the
connection panel, connect your cable(s), and push the assembly back
down so that it is out of the way. The rocking cover will tilt to provide
an exit path for the connected cables. The assembly provides one input
socket of each: AC power, 15-pin HD female, 3.5mm stereo audio female, RJ-45 female, USB A female. On the underside are 3 meter (10
ft) long cables corresponding to each input as follows: AC plug, 15-pin
HD male, 3.5mm stereo male, RJ-45 male, and USB A male.
