Women of Moreland
Woman of Moreland has had several gatherings this past year. All
generations of woman have attended and we have had lively and
thoughtful discussions, often about a book that someone had recently read and is excited about. Bread and Wine, Outliers, Being Mortal and Blue Zones—very different books but all provided the catalyst for deeper thinking and sharing.
There are a couple of ideas kicking around for the summer. First,
based on a labyrinth activity at our last get-together, some people
suggested taking a field trip to a nearby labyrinth, possibly the outdoor labyrinth at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Gresham. Another idea is to have a garden party and enjoy dishes made with the
bounty of our local gardens. If you would attend either of these
events or have another idea please contact Sarah at
[email protected] and we’ll find a date and a venue.

‘Do this in REMEMBRANCE of me…’
When Jesus shared these powerful words with his closest companions while introducing communion to
them at the Passover table, he wasn’t just ‘prescribing a periodic dose of nostalgia’ (as Frederick Buechner once wrote). He was inviting them into an experience of the Presence of their Creator in a unique,
mysterious and transformative way through remembering him, much like we feel the actual, living
presence of a departed loved one in our memories.
The invitation into this experience of remembrance is extended to all of us. Many of us are able to join
in the celebration together in worship on Sundays here at Moreland. But others in our family of faith
are in a situation in their lives where it is not possible for them to participate in person with us. Therefore, our Deacons (in partnership with your pastors) are taking steps towards beginning a ministry of
bringing communion to these dear friends in their homes. Our initial hope is that we will be able to visit
with all of our home-bound church family members and celebrate communion with them 3-4 times per
year.
While our Deacons are leading this effort, the opportunity to serve in this way is open at ALL members
of MPC. It is true that our tradition calls for ordained leaders to offer the words of institution when celebrating communion. But ANYONE can serve the elements and share in the experience. Which means
that ANYONE who feels led to connect with these sisters and brothers in faith whose life circumstances
have led to a more limited means of connection with their family at MPC is welcome and encouraged to
follow that leading and join our home-communion visitation team. (No ordination required!)
One of the reasons our leadership is stepping out into this new expression of our worship life together is
quite simple and profound. Earlier in my ministry, I remember visiting a church member regularly who
was suffering from dementia, a dear woman named Doris. Each time I arrived, I would ‘re-introduce’
myself to her and then listen to her share the same stories, told with lots of sighs and pauses and a
sense of confusion, resignation and sadness. With all of her family gone, all she had left were here memories, and even those were disappearing. But when we would enter into the time of sharing communion,
and I would share those words of invitation, a light of recognition would flicker in his eyes, and her
countenance would transform to a reflection of radiant warmth and joy. By the time we would close
with the Lord’s Prayer, she would be whispering it along with me. A connection happened each time
that was far beyond anything either of us could have created on our own, a connection of our spirits
with the Spirit that gives us life and love, hope and joy. And I have witnessed this kind of powerful connection of spirits and Spirit happen with numerous other people over the years.
Please join us in an opportunity to extend this same gift of connection with our home-bound family
members. If you are interested in becoming a part of this exciting new ministry or finding out more
about it, please contact me or Josh, or our Deacon contact people, Eileen Stone and Rhondie Emry.
With Jesus and with you,
brian

On June 12 Congregational Life is hosting a tea for
ladies (of all ages)!
You are invited to the Fellowship Hall following Worship for a ladies tea.
We are asking for a suggested donation of $5.00 to cover the cost of the
food. RSVPs are encouraged, to ensure we have enough place settings
and plenty of food, so please send your RSVP to Laura or Connie in the office.
Men's/Boy's Coffee, or if a ladies tea is not
your cup of tea, join us in inaugurating a
new Moreland tradition on June 12.
While the women and girls renew the long-celebrated Women's
Tea, others of us will enjoy the masculine counterpart as we
quietly sit around tables in the dining room drinking coffee,
eating cake donuts, and reading the sports page. Weather permitting we may take our folding chairs out to the parking lot.
Milk and jelly donuts available for kids.
