Souto A friend is a lover, literally. The relationship between Latin amicus “friend” and amō “I love” is clear. In English if one goes back in history we see frēond, the Old English word for “friend,” was simply the present participle of the verb frēon “to love.” So when the ABBA chooses the Brahman Friend of the Year they are selecting a person who has a great love for Brahman cattle. This is definitely the case in the 2012 ABBA Brahman Friend of the Year, Javier D. Souto. Souto’s love for Brahman cattle is deeply rooted in his youth. Souto grew I have always loved Brahman cattle... Javier D. Souto up in central Cuba in Sancti Spiritus on his family’s plantation. His family was involved in sugar cane, coffee, and of course, cattle. Souto’s family had both Brahman cattle as well as crossbred cattle. 48 | The Brahman Journal 40 th A nniver sary “My father was a sugar cane mill manager and my mother was a lawyer by education, but never practiced law,” Souto explained. “She ran the household and helped run the family businesses.” Cuba at one time imported large numbers of Brahman cattle from the United States. There were more than 200 breeders of pure bred Brahman cattle in Cuba when Souto was growing up. “I knew about 100 different breeders of pure bred Brahman cattle,” Souto said. The love for Brahman cattle has been with Souto since he can remember. “My Uncle, Ernesto Garcia, would come to the states and buy Brahman cattle,” Souto said. “ I have always loved Brahman cattle; they are a strong breed of cattle.” Souto was forced to leave the country for political reasons when he was in his 20’s, but he never lost his love for his country or Brahman cattle. Once he arrived in Florida from Cuba in 1960, Souto made Miami his home and has lived there ever since. While he was in Cuba Souto attended Villanova University in Havana and the University of Havana. Upon arrival to the United States, he attended Miami-Dade College and the University of Miami, where he graduated from the School of Business in 1967. Souto is a veteran of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, where he was active in the Infiltration Teams. He served for several years, after the Bay of Pigs, with the CIA sponsored Special Missions groups. Elected to the Florida State Senate in 1988 and re-elected in 1990, Souto served as Vice Chair of the Agricultural Committee. Clearly Souto’s passion for all things agricultural, as well as his desire to serve his community is engrained in his soul. Senator Souto is married to Berta Cepero. They have three adult children: Javier, Laura, and Frank, as well as eight grandchildren: Cristina, Alina, Brock, Amanda, Astrid, Natalie, Nicole and Lauren. Currently one of Souto’s projects is to promote the Miami International Agriculture and Cattle Show. The show has long been a dream of Souto and it became a reality in 2009. Souto wanted to provide a venue to feature Florida’s second largest industry, which is agriculture. He also wanted to promote Miami as the gateway to the United States for international commerce with Latin America and the Caribbean. The Miami International Agriculture and Cattle Show includes a Brahman show, as well as an elite sale of Brahman genetics. Souto has traveled extensively promoting the Brahman show and sale. Proceeds from the event benefit The South Florida Autism Charter School. With more than 24 International trips in the last year and a half, and 5 more trips planned before the Congress, Vallarino has been very busy promoting Brahman cattle, as well as the 2012 World Brahman Congress. However, the real reason he has been chosen as the International Friend of the year, is his long history of promoting and advancing Brahman genetics throughout the world. Most people would say “once is enough” about heading up a World Brahman Congress. Ask anyone who has pulled together a Congress, and they will tell you it is a lot of work. But the 2012 World Brahman Congress in Panama will be the second Congress that Vallarino has lead. When asked why he decided to take on the challenge a second time Vallarino simply said, “I never thought about it; I was asked to take on the job, and I just said yes.” Vallarino family’s ranch, Hacienda 50 | The Brahman Journal 40 th A nniver sary Tanara is in Chepo and has been home to pure bred Brahmans since 1960. Vallarino’s father Joaquín José Vallarino, Jr. founded the ranch and still enjoys his Brahman cattle. With over 1500 head of Brahman cattle the ranch is definitely a working ranch. In 1962, they bought the bull Estrella Manso 063, which was the foundation of their Brahman herd at that time. In 1964, Hacienda Tanara added genetics from Hermanos Motta, including three bulls that added new genetics to their program. The Vallarinos started utilizing artificial insemination at Hacienda Tanara in 1974 diversifying the breeding program to include genetics from American breeders such as Hudgins, Jefcoat and Husfeld. Vallarino received a Masters in Animal Science from Texas A & I in Kingsville, Texas. With his educational background, and because he is both a breeder and advocate of Brahman cattle, Vallarino was a natural for the job of promoting the World Brahman Congress. Wherever you see Vallarino be ready to stop and visit, as he will be ready to talk about Brahman cattle, Panamá and the Congress. With remarkable enthusiasm and devotion for the breed, he has traveled hard and fast to make sure everyone worldwide knows about the Congress and the tremendous virtues of Brahman cattle. In efforts to promote the Congress Vallarino has given beautiful Molas, a colorful fabric panel of Panamanian Kuna Indian origin, sewn with a reverse-appliqué technique and used for decorative purposes, as awards at Brahman Shows all over. He has also asked people from all walks of life to become an ambassador to the Congress. “We want everyone in Panama to take part in the Congress,” explains Vallarino. “This is an event of national importance, as agriculture is important the world over and Panama can be a central place to promote and participate in agro-business.” Breeders from around the globe are looking forward to the Congress in Panama, as they know the effort and devotion that has gone into preparing for this event. Pedro Vallarino is definitely an International Brahman friend that has gone the distance to support what he believes in – Brahman Cattle. I was born and raised in Pearland, TX. I’m 17 years old and » T J B A D irector , M arisa N avarro currently a junior at Pearland High School. I’ve been showing Brahman cattle and other livestock since I was 8 years old. I never chose to show Brahman cattle, because it was never really a choice for me since my family had been raising them since I was born. Although, if I had the choice to choose now, I would still pick Brahmans because they really are something unique. My first show heifer wasn’t the best show heifer but at the time it was perfect to me because she was MY heifer. Now since I’ve been showing for 10 years, I’ve become a lot more experienced in both showing and deciding which cattle to show. Showing got me into many different Associations such as 4-H, FFA, AJBA(American Junior Brahman Association), and TJBA(Texas Junior Brahman Association). Being in the TJBA has really been a great ride; it has opened many doors and has taught me valuable things. Competing in some of the competitions such as public speaking and sales talk really helped with my communication skills. I was a shy kid but now I’m not afraid to speak my mind. Also running for director has motivated me to take on a whole new level of responsibility. Raising cattle, especially Brahmans, has taught me responsibility and patience. I believe that all kids who take on the responsibility to raise this stubborn breed really must have the patience to do it, and I think that makes them a great person. Kids that aren’t involved in any Association should for sure join the TJBA, as well as the AJBA, because they are honestly two of the best Associations out there. I’m not just saying that because I’m in them, but because it’s true. The TJBA encourages everyone and anyone to join. The more the better. When my sister and I first started showing it was just me and her and our two heifers. We didn’t talk to anyone but after we got to know everyone we realized how amazing everyone was. I made tons of lifelong friends and I’m sure many more to come. I really hope to see new faces this summer at the 2012 TJBA state show and maybe even at the All American Show. I hope everybody had a good holiday season and is ready to get back to normal life again. To start off, my name is Travis Trent and I’m 18 years old. I am the son of Kip and Regina Beaudry. I have grown up around Cabot, Arkansas and I am currently a freshman at Arkansas State University at Beebe. I’m studying animal science right now and plan on attending a major university to get a bachelors degree in animal science. I’m still undecided on what exactly I want to do but have a large interest in genetics, so maybe that will lead me down a promising road. I have been showing Brahman cattle for 4 years now and love every bit of it. I’m currently representing Arkansas as an AJBA director as well as serving president for the Arkansas Junior Brahman Association. Both associations have opened so many doors for me that would have never happened if I didn’t get involved with Brahman cattle. I have met so many great people over the past years and had a blast at all the shows. I want to thank everybody that has helped me progress in the AJBA and build life skills. I’m looking forward to another great year and hope to see everybody at Houston!
