Well, we were informed that another Triple Creek RV Park existed. Therefore, we had
to do some research and find it. We had visions of another fun place just like we have
here in Woodville, Texas. We just knew it was going to sit in a secluded area, and would
have all the charm and friendliness of Triple Creek RV Music Park.
Well, what we found was the sign. We looked
around, but couldn’t find the triple creeks, or
any creeks. In fact, this facility is in town. There
are no creeks at all. No matter how hard we
looked, we couldn’t find anything that resembled
a stream. OK, so lets move on and see what else
we could find.

We strolled around the park and came across the RV spots. Her is a shot of them….yes,
all of them. So there are a total of 6 RV spots. They had no Jam Shack, no Jelly Shack
and no Mable Murphy. Unfortunately we couldn’t find anyone around there to talk to.
However, if any of you ever
stay there, please contact us
and give us a complete report.
We would like to know more
about this park that has such a
wonderful name.

has always been a balancing act to keep Triple Creek Jam Shack going in the black, but in
recent months the balance hasn’t been so good. The crowds have been good, the shows have
been great, the jams have been good, but the balance sheet has been out of balance.

Dutch Oven Cooking.
Dutch Oven cooking is really catching on in popularity here at Triple Creek. As a result, we have decided to
provide you with a little more information about this cooking method:. The following provides you with two
secrets of Dutch oven cooking. In the following months, we will print all the secrets. If you can’t wait, we
found this information in “Backwoods Home Magazine”, Seven secrets of Dutch oven cooking by Roger L
Beattie., Issue #47 Sept/Oct 1997.
Secret 1: Choosing wisely
When deciding on a Dutch oven, there are a few important guidelines to keep in mind. A common question
is, “Should I buy cast iron or aluminum?” Both have some advantages. Aluminum Dutch ovens weigh about
one-third less than their cast iron counterparts. They require no curing, and, like the cast iron pots, can be
used over open fires, buried underground, or used with coals or briquettes. However, aluminum Dutch ovens
do not retain heat as well nor distribute it as evenly as cast iron. The flavoring of foods produced will also be
different. Aluminum ovens sometimes give a chalky flavor to foods, whereas iron ovens give a smoked flavor
to foods. Most Dutch oven aficionados use only cast iron ovens.
When buying a cast iron Dutch oven, whether new or used, look carefully at these five important areas:

Only buy Dutch ovens with legs. Some are manufactured with flat bottoms and are far more difficult to
use. The 3 legs should be cleanly attached to the bottom of the oven, never cracked, bent, or broken off.
Check the fit of the lid. It should lie flush with the lip of the oven all the way around.
Check the casting, or thickness, of the metal, especially around the rim. There will be some inconsistencies. However, areas that are 15% (or more) thicker or thinner than the remaining areas will produce
hot or cold spots during cooking and cooling. This variance in thickness will also make the oven much
more likely to crack or warp.
Make sure the lid has a loop handle, cleanly attached to its center.
Check the bail (the wire handle) attached to the oven itself. It should be easily movable and strong enough to use for carrying or hanging a heavy pot full of stew without
difficulty.
If these five areas pass inspection, you’ve got a good Dutch oven.
Another purchase consideration is the size of the oven. Dutch ovens range in size from
8 to 22 inches in diameter. The most commonly used are 10-inch, 12-inch, and 14-inch ovens. The larger
ovens hold more if you’re cooking for large groups, but they are huge, heavy, and hard to handle If you
only buy one oven to get started, pick a 12-inch. Later you can add a 10-, 14- or additional 12-inch ovens.
Secret 2: The miracle cure
Once you have an oven, it must be cured. This process will keep your oven from rusting and produce an interior coating that will prevent food from sticking. The process is very simple. If you have an old rusty oven,
scrub it well and use a fine-grade sandpaper to clean up and expose the entire surface, inside and out. Once the
metal is exposed—or if you are curing a new oven—wash the entire oven
well with hot soapy water. This will remove the waxy coating from a new
oven and the fine metal dust remaining in an old reconditioned one.
Next, heat your Dutch oven, with the lid on, to about 200° in the oven in
your home. (You can also do this in a fire, with coals or briquettes.) While
the oven is hot, pour or drop in a small amount of oil, shortening, or lard,
and while wearing oven mitts or heavy leather gloves, use a clean cotton
cloth to wipe the entire surface well, inside and out, to coat it with the
shortening, oil, or lard. When the oven is coated, heat it to 350° for an
hour. If you do this in your house, expect some smoke. After an hour of
heating, let the oven cool slowly. Force-cooling a cast iron oven by putting
it in a freezer, snow bank, or outside during a cold rain, can crack or warp
it.

Triple Creek “LIVE” on KWUD radio.
Radio has often been considered one of the most personal forms of media. It brings the business to the people
right in the comfort of their very own homes.
Karen is now talking on KWUD radio every Friday morning between 8:30 - 9:00 am. We’re trying to get the
word out about all the good things going on at Triple Creek & the existence of Bluegrass music.. She might even
ask you to join her and play some music on the air! Thanks to Oscar Lyons, Charles Glenn, and Dean
Bartholomew for doing that very thing on the Friday before Thanksgiving! More recently she has been joined by
Chuck Schultz, as well as Tommy Ferrell!
Karen talks about the specific instrumentation, and how Bluegrass has a distinguishing characteristic of featuring
two, three, or four parts harmony. Unlike mainstream country music, bluegrass is traditionally played on acoustic
stringed instruments. The fiddle, five-string banjo, guitar, mandolin, and upright bass are often joined by the
resonator guitar (also referred to as a Dobro) and harmonica.
We hope Alvin’s Blue grass jokes show up on radio!
Charles, our resident photographer was out one evening and snapped a picture of our friends around their camp
fire. Upon further examination of the fire, Charles snapped this intriguing shot. If you look it it, you can imagine almost anything in this fiery image.
Many thanks to the fine folk for having this camp fire, as they
were actually burning a stump that needed to be removed.
Obviously the spirit of the stump was captured in this shot.
Just another Jam!
Due to all the Jams that go on, we are expanding our facilities
for outside Jams. We will soon have the “Jelly Shack” over
there by Ms Ethel’s. How do you like that name? It was selected to be a sister of the Jam shack.
The gazebo that next to the Jam Shack will soon have electricity so we can hang lights and fans. It’s a great place.

Its BBQ time at Triple Creek.
A while back, our friend Don Mears came to Triple Creek with his professional BBQ team. It was a
great time. They brought with them class and some really fine BBQ ribs. Well, we’re trying to get Don
and family to come back here to Triple Creek and heat up another competition. Our home grown Camo
Boys have been firing up the Holy Smoke House and trying out some new rubs. The game is on! Now
is all we need is these people from the city of Houston (yes, they are
City boys), to be brave and come down here for a little more one-onone competition. We have some fresh road kill that is still kicking
that will be frozen and prepared for this event. Come on City Boys,
just let us know when you’re ready!

Nature Trail
The recent hurricanes destroyed the bridges on the nature trail that runs behind
the Jam Shack. As a result, the trails have been in neglect and haven’t been
used….UNTIL NOW.
Thanks to the great work of both Gary and John, the nature trail will once again
be ready for guests. They are doing a great job of cleaning it up and getting it
ready. The new bridges are going to be much bigger and better able to withstand
any surges of water that may come as a result of harsh weather.
The new bridges are being constructed out of large utility poles with supports on
both ends. We wouldn’t be surprised if they end up with some type of suspension on them before they are finished.
Be sure to thank John and Gary for their contribution to Triple Creek. The nature trail will be there long after they are gone.
By the way, the original nature trail was made by Tolly & Connie. Thanks to
them.

of John Reynolds staying here. John is a Native Indian and loves to share the
folklore with young adults. In fact, when John performs his historic journey
for his crowd, he wears his full regalia. He is 100% authentic, and talks from
the heart.

This is the tub bass that Karen saw while traveling in New York State. It is the basic model. Moving the
"pump handle" up and down is what gives the bass the different pitches. The neck of this fine instrument is
short enough to allow you to set down and play. This item comes in a cardboard box ready for your assembly, which is pretty much straight forward.

Triple Creek barn.
Of course, Leo is well
known as the ever so
gentle horse that rode all the kids around Triple Creek.
Leo was so patient with all that wanted to ride. We’ll
miss all of you.

Ol’ Dudley goes national.
It all started here at Triple Creek with Ms Audrey cooking for her Dudley.
Now this famous breakfast filled with homemade biscuits and gravy has hit
the big time. We don’t know if its her eggs, bacon or potatoes that put it over
the top, but it’s a wonderful meal.
People come from everywhere and carry the fame of Triple Creek to the four
corners of the world. Its really great being part of this life style.

Starting April 1st we will have a rate increase for camping. Everything continues to increase, and we have
maintained our low, low camping rates for the past 5 years. We greatly appreciate those people that help us
with the chores around here that let us provide affordable camping rates to all our friends and visitors.
Here is what the changes are going to look like:
 Nightly rates will increase from $18/$20 to $20/$22. This is for 30 and 50 amp service respectively.
 Weekly rates will increase $10/month to $100 and $120.
 “Camp & Store” rate will be $135/month + electricity.
 Full-time monthly rate will NOT change. It will remain at a thrifty $200/month + electricity.

For those of you that don’t know Charles Kruvand, he lives here at
Triple Creek and travels around taking pictures of nature. Charles
is shown with the paddle. He is accompanied by his friend Francis
Abernathy from a trip into the island in the BLG Slough Wilderness near Alto.
Just so happens that Dr Francis Abernathy was a Professor of
Chemistry that taught Marc when he was achieving his Chemistry
degree at Stephen F Austin in Nacagsoches.
Becky Goodwin (Blue Grass Becky)
For those of you that have been around Triple
Creek for years, you all know Becky and her husband Big Ed. Becky did frequent our place quite
often, but has slowed down with her visits. Becky
has a very soft style of Bluegrass, and we certainly
welcome her back to join in the fun.

Up On Triple Creek—RV Music Park Jams Through the Weekend by Cherie Yurco May/June 2011 issue of Making Music.
Following a three-mile dirt road through some of the prettiest piney woods in Texas, folks from all
around the state and far beyond arrive at Triple Creek Music Park. Whether musical snowbirds from
colder climates who come to spend the winter months, music tours passing through the Houston area,
or musically-oriented families looking for a unique getaway, park owners Karen and Marc McConnell
make them all feel welcome and get them jamming.
Both musicians, the McConnells purchased Triple Creek RV Music Park in 2007. “We had previously stayed at
Triple Creek, and we couldn’t believe that it was for sale,” says Karen. “We pushed up retirement plans and purchased the park.”
Marc still works as a corrosion engineer/metallurgist consultant during the week and he joins Karen for weekends at the park. Karen, who previously was director of the Computer Networking & Troubleshooting Technology Program at Lamar Institute of Technology, now lives at the park full-time. “When asked if I miss it, my usual
response is that I am too busy running the RV park and learning to play new instruments, to miss it!” Karen says.
Like many recreational musicians Karen and Marc studied piano as children and their love and knowledge of music never left them as they learned a variety of new instruments along the way. “Music is something we have always enjoyed, but rarely took time to participate in,” says Karen. “
At the park I play mandolin, dulcimer, autoharp, tenor guitar, and upright, acoustic, and washtub bass, but my
favorite is the Adirondack washtub bass that was made especially for me,” says Karen. Marc took some refresher
guitar lessons before the couple purchased the park, and even though he has two guitars on-hand, he rarely has
time to join in the jams.
The genre of the weekend’s music changes on a rotating schedule found on the park’s website
(www.triplecreekrv.com). For example, week one is gospel, the next week is open jam, then classic country, and
then bluegrass. There are often “food events” to coincide with the music events. For example, one March weekend this year featured bluegrass music with a Dutch oven cookout and Memorial Day weekend featured bluegrass
and a barbecue.
Small jam session spring up all over the park, but guests can count on organized jams from Thursday night to
Saturday afternoon. For circles located in the park’s Jam Shack there is a rotating wireless mike hooked to a sound
system. “All are welcome to join our jam circle,” says Karen. “It can be small or large, and sometimes divides itself when it gets too large!”
Upon arrival at the park, music is a priority. “One of the early questions guests are asked is, if they are pickers,
singers, or grinners/listeners,” says Karen. “All are encouraged to participate at their own level and are made welcome.”
Almost every Saturday evening there is a music show, and sometimes guests are treated to an impromptu concert
from a touring act that is just passing through. “We get professionals from time to time and encourage them to
stop,” says Karen. “There are lots of bands on the road, and we allow them to ‘camp’ with us in exchange for
entertaining us.”
Aside from music being front and center, Triple Creek RV Music Park is a full service RV park with all the amenities you would expect, including 92 full hook-up sites with Wi-Fi. Tents and RVs, big and small, are welcome. “I
know there are other parks that encourage music, but we think that no other can compare,” says Karen. “Many of
our guests agree and come back year after year. You enter the park once as a stranger and leave as family.

Most of you remember our Triple Creek neighbor Michael
Neely. Well he was here for a quick visit recently, so I asked him
for a picture to post so others would remember him. Here you

Michael had his leg removed after a long difficulty with it, so he
is now living in Nacogdoches where he is receiving therapy,
Marc is selling his Harley. FOR SALE
At 58 years old, Marc has decided that riding this
Harley is a little too sporty for him. He likes riding his
other “old man” Harley that has three wheels under it.
Karen had this motorcycle custom painted shortly
after we bought it. We put it in car shows along with
her jeep with a matching paint job and ALWAYS won
BEST IN SHOW.!
CARL STUMP
Many of your remember our bluegrass musician Carl
Stump that wintered here at Triple Creek. Well Carl
has reached that time in his life when he wants to try
new horizons.
For thousands of years, people have been sailing across
the oceans and around the world. Knowledge of ocean
currents and wind patterns has allowed people to reliably reach their destinations even after crossing huge
expanses of open ocean.
Today, racing sailboats is a sport, and teams test their
skills by racing around the world. Navigation now relies on satellites, but knowledge of wind patterns, ocean
currents, and potential obstacles in unfamiliar waters is still essential for sailing.
Well Carl has traded in his Gibson guitar, grown some long hair and started wearing deck shoes. You see he is
now skipper of a top notch sail boat as he is getting ready to enter the world’s premier offshore race, an exceptional test of sailing prowess. Carl will run the risks of erratic winds, storms and all sorts of items that can come
his way by nature.
We wish you luck on your new adventure, but please come home safe and sound to Triple Creek.

a man near. Amarillo , TX . The crosses are made of metal also. The man did this out of the
kindness of his heart. Someone donated the land on which to erect them.

He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.
He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.
