Gene Sarazen visits Don and Nancy Panoz in 1992, during the construction of The Legends Course.
September, 2014, Issue 2
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our second edition of Château Élan Estates Magazine. As promised, with your help, we
have already made changes, and hopefully improvements, to this month's edition. Thank you for all of your
positive comments, suggestions and input. We will continue to evolve. The goal is to give you as much
information about your neighborhood as possible.
Summer has flown by, but it has been a great one here at Château Élan. From summer camps at the
Sports Club, to tennis and golf tournaments, to swim team meets, the opportunities for fun activities are
never-ending. Fall is just around the corner, and many of your children are already headed back to school.
Please read the notes from security on buses, gates and traffic so that we can make a smooth transition into
back-to-school mode.
Though summer is coming to an end, remember that we continue to provide many opportunities for
family fun throughout the year. August and September are busy at the Sports Club with Kid's Nights and
Family Nights. If you are interested in getting to know your neighbors, there are plenty of clubs available,
from billiards to Bible study. Check out the many ways in which you can stay active and involved.
In this month’s edition, we take a look back at the history of our beautiful Legends course. Pictured
on our cover are our founders, Don and Nancy Panoz, with golf legend Gene Sarazen. It has been almost 25
years since the construction of this course, and in our featured article, our Director of Golf, Mike Bishop,
reminds us of where we started, and how far we have come. I Hope You Enjoy!

Service Gate Update
132 Homes
In July, major damage was done to the Legends’ service gate. A flatbed truck entering the service gate
destroyed the guest pass scanner, stone column and surrounding landscape. Due to quick reporting by a
resident, on property courtesy patrol and Long Security (our gate and camera maintenance company) were
able to identify the truck and it’s driver. The company that caused the damage has been contacted and is
cooperating fully with our HOA. An insurance claim has been filed and we expect to recoup all of the money
associated with the repairs and replacement of the equipment. Please be patient as we work through this
process. The time just to receive the replacement parts is 6 weeks.
In the interim, all service vehicles are being routed through the main gate with the exception of large
trucks that are being escorted through the service gate by courtesy patrol personnel. The damage did not
impact the residents and the club members with RFID stickers, as the sticker reader is on the opposite side of
the entrance. Guests were also not impacted as policy requires that all club and resident guests enter through
the Legends’ main gate.
Covenant Violations
Multiple covenant and design standard violation letters were sent to homeowners this month and we
send thanks to those residents who corrected the cited violations. We also ask for patience from our homeowners regarding the process of rectifying each violation. There are multiple steps that must be followed
through the process, which means that results are not always immediate. We do not perform daily neighborhood drive-thrus, so if you see a problem that continues for more than a few days, please report the issue to
your HOA manager. All homeowners’ complaints/concerns are kept confidential and no names are released
in the reporting process. Please keep in mind, we are more than property owners; we are friends and neighbors.

A Little Legends History
FEATURE ARTICLE
By: Mike Bishop
Only a handful of people know the story of how the Legends
course was named and how we identified and signed on our Legends, Gene Sarazen, Kathy Whitworth and Sam Snead. On the
Friday of Masters week 1990 Don Panoz called me into his office,
which at the time was located upstairs in the Château Clubhouse.
Don was traveling a lot back then and was rarely in town. I walked
into Don’s office and asked if there was something I could do for
him. He replied, “Mike, we are going to build a second course and
it is going to be a private club. Now, we need a name for this
course. Do you have any ideas?” I thought for a minute and said,
“May I give it some thought?” Lying on Don’s desk was the Friday
sports section of the Atlanta Journal–Constitution newspaper. On
the front page of the sports section, was the photo of Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead and Byron Nelson with the heading under the
picture reading “The Legends of Golf”.
These famous legends had the honor of hitting the ceremonial opening tee shots at the Masters each year.
Without hesitation Don said, “Mike, we are going to name our private club The Legends. Now we have
to go out there and find us some legends and get them involved with the project.” Those were Don’s exact
words. I remember it like it was yesterday.
We immediately started bouncing around some names. Some of the names we considered were Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and a few others. After only a few minutes of consideration and not knowing what Don’s reaction would be I said, “Don, those guys are still active and although great, they are not
really legends yet. I think we need to look at an earlier generation. How about those guys in the picture?”
Don thought a minute and said, “How about Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen? But we need a lady legend too.”
I think the name Kathy Whitworth came out of our mouths at the same time. She was the most successful
woman golfer of all time, winning 88 professional events. Sam had won 82. Within a matter of months Gene,
Kathy and Sam signed on to participate in the design of The Legends course along with architect Denis
Griffiths and to lend their names to the project. They were all here for the ceremonial ground breaking and
the grand opening which was in 1994, the year the clubhouse opened and also the year of the very first “Sarazen World Open” Championship. All three legends were here several times during the construction of the
course, but Gene took a very special interest in the design and was here several times each year until we
opened. As a matter of fact in 1991, 1992 and 1993
Gene would hit his tee shot at the Masters and
shortly after was riding to Château Élan with Don
Panoz to come look at “his golf course” as he liked to
say to me. All three of our legends participated in
the design of the Legends course, but by far, Mr.
Sarazen, as Don Panoz called him, was the most
involved. One of the ways we honored Gene for his
involvement was by creating an S-Shaped bunker on
the left side of #3 green. Next time you are playing

THE LEGENDS CLUB
20 Year Members
It was 20 years ago that the Legends clubhouse opened. We would like to recognize our 20 year
members. Those members are: Lew and Wanda Hudson, Terry and Jan Roof, Ken and Maryann Scarboro,
Tom and Linda Harrison, Doug and Diane Magnus, David and Carolyn Robinson, Tony and Teresa Funari
and Dale and Louise Gaines.
Thank you for your 20 years of support and for being so involved in the Club. It has been a pleasure
knowing and serving you!
Club Competitions
Kameron Williams, the son of Bart and Carrie Williams, won his 1st Legends Men’s Club Championship on Sunday, June 22nd. Over three days Kameron battled high heat and great competition from perennial challengers Mark Bichsel, Brandon Childress and Shaun Dalton, as well as past champions Ben Bramlett and two-time defending champion Ty Robinson.
On a tough opening day, Shaun Dalton opened with an 81 for the overall lead. This was one of the
highest opening day totals to lead the club championship proving that the Legends course was more than
holding it’s own. One shot behind were defending champion Ty Robinson, former champion Ben Bramlett,
and Steve Jones. Kameron, meanwhile opened with a surprising 88.
On the second day, Kameron came out firing on all cylinders as he posted an even par round of 72,
for the lowest club championship round since the greens were replaced in 2011. With his even par round he
bolted to the top of the leaderboard, tied with Shaun Dalton who posted a second round of 79. Following
close behind was two-time defending champion Ty Robinson, just three shots back going into the final day.
On the final day, Mark Bichsel was the mover of the day going from 7th place to 2nd place with a
solid round of 77 which was only matched by the winner Kameron Williams. Also posting fine rounds on
Sunday were former champ Ben Bramlett and Steve Jones who carded rounds of 79 and 80 respectively, for
a joint 3rd place finish. At 19, Kameron becomes the youngest Men’s Champion ever at The Legends by an
amazing nine shots. Congratulations Kameron, and all of the competitors in this year’s championship.
On the blue tees there were 3 flights playing concurrently with the gold tee flight. The flights were
separated by handicap indexes before the start of play. In the first flight, four-time Senior Club Champion
and former Men’s Club Champion Richard Ward held off a hard charging Dale Gaines to win the first flight
by seven shots.
In the second blue flight, Al Dimassi had a come from behind victory over former Senior Men’s Club
Champion and flight winner in the Men’s Club Championship Alan Couch. It was a very tight match that
came down to the last hole of the 54 hole event.
The 3rd flight saw Tim Rooney come from three back after two days to claim a hard fought victory
over Brad Harlow and Lewis Sharp who both finished 6 back. The victory was especially satisfying for
Rooney as Lewis Sharp was trying to win back-to-back championships after claiming the Men’s Member-Guest Championship earlier in the month.

Club Competitions
Continued
The White Flight Championship was played over two days with Brud Childress claiming the championship by five shots over Andy Higgins. After the first day, Mr. Childress held a three shot lead over Steve
Moore with Higgins and Bill Mays both six back. On a day where everyone seemed to struggle, Mr. Childress
was able to hold on for a five shot victory.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in this years Men’s Club Championship. We hope
everyone enjoyed the competition and camaraderie as much as we enjoyed organizing and running it.
As was the case in the Men’s Club Championship, a youngster won the Ladies’ Club Championship.
Darby Gentry, the daughter of Harry and Kathy Gentry, won the Ladies’ Club Championship at the age of 21.
After opening with a great round of 76, Darby held a thirteen shot lead over Garnett Smith who was playing
in her first Legends Club Championship. On the 2nd day, Darby and Mrs. Smith tied with rounds of 87 and
Darby held on for a fantastic thirteen shot win in the gross division of the Ladies’ Club Championship.
In the net division, Linda Perri opened with a fine net 67 to take a six shot lead over Jan Roof. On the
second day Pat Blake came from seven shots back to win the net division at 141. Three ladies tied for 2nd at
146. They were Leah Dietrich, Sherry Hayes and first round leader Linda Perri.
We would like to thank all of the ladies for playing, and hope all of you will play next year for some
more fun on the links.
The Legends Cottages
The Legends has four 4-bedroom/4 bath cottages available for rent. We recently gutted the interiors
and added new hardwood tile flooring, granite bathrooms, all queen-size beds, flat-screen tvs, refrigerators
with ice and new furniture while painting both the interior and exterior with new colors.
The cottages are a great affordable option for members and homeowners with visiting families
(mothers-in-law), golf junkets, meetings or your home away from home when the dog house will not do.
For more information, pricing and availability, please call Mike Bishop at 678-541-6437 or email him

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
Château Élan Ladies’ Bible Study Group
Our neighborhood Bible study includes ladies of all ages and backgrounds from throughout the neighborhood. We begin
a new study in September each year, and we always love to welcome newcomers. Our interdenominational group typically
includes many who are new to Bible study as well as a few who have been studying the Bible for as long as they can remember.
Whether new to the Bible or an experienced Sunday School teacher, what each of us shares is a desire to draw closer to God and
to each other through in-depth study of God’s Word.
Before beginning our new study, we’ve planned a field trip to Eagle Ranch. We will be meeting at the Ranch chapel on
September 18th, and our featured speaker will be Kayanne Staub. Eagle Ranch is a local ministry that provides a Christ-centered
children’s home for boys and girls in crisis
and works with families to pursue reconciliation and reunification. As part of our
community outreach, we have partnered
with one of the girls’ homes at the Ranch,
and the end of summer trip to the chapel
has become an annual tradition. We will
have bus service available for those interested in carpooling, and our friends at the
Ranch are always happy to provide tours
and answer questions about their ministry.
We will begin meeting weekly at the
Sarazen House (next door to the Legends
Clubhouse) the following Thursday,
September 25th. We meet every Thursday,
and we do our best to begin promptly at
9:30 am and wrap up no later than 11:30
am. Meetings include fellowship and
discussion time and, depending on the
study, often include a video that we watch
together. Most of our studies also include a
workbook, and homework usually requires
around two to three hours of study per
week.
For this fall, we have chosen a
seven-week study by Beth Moore titled
“Stepping Up: A Journey Through the
Psalms of Ascent”. The fifteen Psalms of
Ascent (Psalm 120 through Psalm 134) were
sung during the pilgrimages of the ancient
Israelites for annual feasts. We will study
the meaning of these psalms and feasts and
also explore the meaning of our own
pilgrimages as believers. We will have
workbooks available for purchase beginning
September 18th.
We invite all Château Élan ladies to
join us in our new study. If you have any
questions or would like more information
about our group, our new study or Eagle
Ranch, please e-mail Lynn Price at
[email protected], or call at 404-502-0505.

NOTE FROM COURTESY PATROL
The new Thompson Mill Exit Gates/Arms will automatically sense the number of cars going through so you do
not have to stop and wait for the gates to come down after the car ahead of you exits. There is a loop in the road that is
about 40’ inside the gate so that an approaching car does not have to slow down (if going at an appropriate speed and
not tailgating). If five cars are going through the loop then the gate will know not to close until the 5th car exits (as
there is a loop on the other side of the gate). The loop will time-out after 20-25 seconds, i.e.- if a car triggers the loop,
but does not exit then the arms will automatically close in about 20 to 25 seconds whether there is a car coming
through or not. Do not wait for the gates to close for the car ahead of you. The loop recognizes you, so please proceed
forward without stopping. We will keep the exit gates open in the morning for the school buses to exit as
sometimes there is a back-up for the school buses.
Please be informed that courtesy patrol has no capability of taking in animals. If you see a possible pet on the loose
then please call, but keep in mind we can do very little unless the owner is known.
Please help us help you in keeping the community streets as clear as possible, by making sure all vehicles are parked on
our streets the proper way. This means all vehicles are being asked to park in the direction of the flow of traffic.
With school having started back up, please keep in mind that even within the community it is state law to STOP for all
school buses when their lights are flashing.

GWINNETT CHILDREN’S SHELTER ORGANIZES ITS HARVEST OF HOPE GALA THIS FALL
Maureen Kornowa, Executive Director of the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter, has announced the date for it’s
Harvest of Hope Gala on Saturday, November 8, 2014 to be held at the Château Élan Hotel . A reception at 6 p.m.
will precede the Gala Affair in the Château Élan Hotel Ballroom from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. This event is being held to raise
funds for the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter.
Gwinnett Children’s Shelter’s mission is “Strengthening children, youth and families in crisis by providing a broad
array of counseling and support services in a safe and nurturing environment.” The shelter has been serving children
in a loving environment for more than 26 years. The shelter’s new program, THE NEXT STEP, is designed to help the
children and their moms, as well as girls who ‘age-out’ of the foster care system, achieve the necessary life skills training
they NEED to successfully thrive outside of the shelter, for THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. As the shelter grows forward
and expands their programs to best meet the needs of children in crisis, they ask that you partner with them with
your time, energy, talents and resources to make a difference in the lives of the children and adults who need your
support.
The Harvest of Hope Gala will include a cocktail hour, a buffet dinner, silent auctions, a wall of wine, a guest speaker, photos with celebrities and an array of fund raising events. There will be a celebrity DJ as Master of
Ceremonies with music and dancing to end the evening.
To purchase tickets, volunteer for the event or to donate services or goods contact Dan Burgner at 770-356-1112 or
[email protected]. Individual tickets are $175, $325 for a couple, and a table of 10 for $1500
pre-sold prior to October 17. Your event ticket also includes a drink ticket. Cocktail attire is requested.
