DELETIONS The following list of companies NO LONGER OFFERS DISCOUNTS to our members Tropical Dry Cleaners Adopt A Pet Before you groan and say, “Not another animal story - what about the suffering of kids and abused women?” Permit me to indulge in a little plagiarism and quote from a recent article in the New York Times which is the result of numerous studies undertaken over several decades. “Psychologists, lawmakers and law-enforcement officers are increasingly making a connection between animal abuse and other forms of violence” (Charles Siebert - The Animal-Cruelty Syndrome, June 13th 2010) Animal abusers are prone to violence and aggression. Our society is plagued by these themes and it is no small matter to be overlooked. My second quote from the revered statesman Mahatma Gandhi should ring this idea home. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. We have here a multi-faceted and enormous problem that we are grappling with that is certainly not exclusive to Trinidad and Tobago. For those of us living here however, we need to recognise the problem and that any form of cruelty is an expression of something much more profound. This will not just go away and there is no quick fix. The moral fibre of our beloved country is rapidly disintegrating evidenced by the destruction of the family unit. Children having children is becoming the norm and the responsibilities and consequences of their actions is customarily handed over to reluctant parents or grandparents. It is a cycle of dysfunctional behaviour where the wrong lessons are learned and the basics such as morals, love, respect, sharing and kindness are not on the curriculum. There is a wind of change in certain segments of the society in that our young women are taking advantage of the educational opportunities and are excelling in their chosen careers thus enabling them to become self sufficient. This brings me to what I perceive as the crux of both the problem and the solution. Early education. We need to creatively educate our young ones from a very early age, about the need for compassion, responsibility, dependability, trustworthiness etcetera. As youngsters growing up in England these invaluable lessons were taught to us in our favourite class! We waited in anticipation for this class every week. Nobody was ever sick or missed school that day because we got to play with the animals in the biology room. Yes, we had a room full of hamsters, Guinea pigs and even rabbits. We were encouraged to have pets and be responsible for their well being. The lessons spilled over into our every day lives and impacted on our interaction with each other and family members. The majority of us grew into caring, responsible nurturing parents. That generation went the proverbial extra mile for our friends and loved ones. Our marriages lasted, because we tried that bit harder and we respected ourselves and had respect for others. It is the most natural and obvious transition from a caring child to a caring adult, and yet it appears continued on page 27 13 Hairs it for Clem Lue Yat Mention his name and immediately one thing comes to mind – hair. His name is also a major fixture in the world of international beauty pageants, international beauty awards and hair innovations. He is Clem Lue Yat. Born July 31, 1945, the fifth of nine children of Samuel and Sue Len Lue Yat of Pao On, Guang Dong, China, Clem’s career started growing at age 13 when he demonstrated his creative abilities. He quickly built up a clientele, but with the need for formal training, so he took to London at age 17 where he did hairdressing courses in London, England. On his return, Lue Yat opened his first hairdressing salon in Port-ofSpain. It wasn’t long before, Lue Yat started provided hairdressing services to the ‘Who’s Who’ of Trinidad and Tobago - local beauty queen contestants and visiting celebrities. He also did platform work in other West Indian countries demonstrating hair products represented by Oscar Francois Limited. After capturing the local market, in 1970, he decided to take talent internationally when he immigrated to Montreal, Canada. “There, I entered a High Fashion hair styling competition and came first runner up. After six months, I relocated to New York and opened up a salon in Brooklyn in the heart of a West Indian neighborhood on Washington Avenue and then on 1260 Flatbush Avenue,” said Lue Yat. He credits the late Gospel Singer, Mahalia Jackson for his forage into the hair world. “She was so impressed by my work, she advised me to start that ‘doing hair’ in America,” said Lue Yat. 14 With the ‘word of mouth’ about his hairdressing business, Lue Yat’s clients soon expanded. At the same time, the largest “black” hair preparation company “Johnson Products of Chicago” hired him to demonstrate its products at Hair Shows throughout the USA, broadening his horizons in the Hair Industry. Powered towered greater success, Lue Yat moved from the high fashion hairstyles in the Sixties and Jherri Curls in the Seventies towards creating his own unique Interlocking Hair Weaving System in the Eighties, and then his Wrap Net Weave System for severe hair loss in the nineties. The latter earned him the title “The Master Hair Weaver Of The World”, which followed his by Peter Campbell appearances in leading US “Black” hairdressing magazines and at major annual Hair Shows in the USA and England. “My platform work exposed my skills to other hairstylists who are baffled that an Oriental (believing that I was from Korea or Japan) was so versatile in handling all lengths and types of hair for both sexes, and in particular ‘black hair’. When the questions arose, I would explain that I was from Trinidad and Tobago where the ethnic makeup consists of just about every race and that I had been ‘playing’ in all types of hair for a long time,” said Lue Yat. He is also proud to be a Trinbagonian who has done the hair of winners of Miss Universe and Miss World pageants, Miss New York State as well as other West Indian beauties, Soca Artistes and US stars. “I am most proud of doing the hair of the 1999 Miss Universe Mpule Kwelagobe as well as that year’s first runner up Miss Philippines,” said Lue Yat, who is proud to be the holder of many local and international awards including: Miss Trinidad & Tobago Lifetime Achievement Award (New York) – 2007; Trinidad & Tobago Beauty Trade Show – 2007; International Institute of Trichologists (Lifetime Achievement Award)- 2003; Hairweb.com (Entrepreneur Award) – 2000; Salon Preneurs World Network Association (Excellence Award) – 1996; Toronto Le Verette Beauty Show (Achievement Award) – 1993; Trinidad & Tobago Hair & Beauty Trade Show – 1992 and The Caribbean International Center for Hair Care, Inc. – 1989. In this decade, many hairstylists have been trained by Lue Yat in his hair weaving and hair styling techniques and more recently, Hair Extensions using micro cylinders without using glue or chemicals, for which he has mastered. “Even as our population ages, I have been paying attention to the needs of the baby-boomer, by offering solutions to hair loss problems from aging or illness,” said Lue Yat. “I now specialize in hair units for men and women to enhance their self confidence.” To further extend his services as a Hairstylist and a Tutor, Lue Yat has designed tools and equipment to make hairdressing easier and is due to launch his first instructional DVD in his Hair Extensions Technique. Today, Lue Yat operates in between Brooklyn, New York and Petit Valley. Lue Yat gave some much needed tips to clients: “They should avoid using glue to bond hair as the chemicals used to remove the glue cause loss of hair. Cancer patients who have experienced hair loss should also avoid hair weaving as the scalp might be tender. They should use only wigs.” Although he continues to travel the world teaching his techniques, he maintains his Trinidadian roots and still makes time to give back to his country by sharing his expertise with local hairstylists and the Governmentsponsored Beauty Culture classes. “By sharing my skills, I want to ensure that upcoming hairstylists empower themselves to step out of their boxes and operate as professionals with the client in mind, ready and equipped to handle any technique in hairdressing and beauty culture,” said Lue Yat. 15 Pt. II Do you want a nice, relaxing day of pampering, but don’t want to spend a whole bunch of cash on expensive spa treatments? Well, this article will tell you where to go! Spa Esencia at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad is one of the premier spa in Trinidad and Tobago. The location is convenient, at Wrightson Road, Port of Spain. Spa Esencia offers the latest authentic spa treatment based on Trinidad and Tobago’s non-stop festivals. Their spa treatment experts are trained to promote complete well being and the quality of experience for each guest by further customising treatments to meet individual needs. Spa Esencia offer a wide selection of treatments. There, is where the celebration of many extends to a daily celebration of the self, share in the spirit of giving and receiving and experience the beauty, relaxation, and refreshment. I am Denise Joseph and this is my experience at Spa Esencia at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad: Firstly, I was very elated when I was selected to go to Spa Esencia to do a Facial for a special promotion with Spa Esancia. When the marketing manager made the appointment, she explained that I had a choice for male or female massage therapists. Therefore I choose a female massage therapists for no special reason. However both men and women tend to prefer women therapist. Massage therapists are trained to respect boundaries and use proper draping techniques. At Spa Esencia experienced spa-goers often don’t care whether massage therapists are male or female. They’re comfortable with the routine, and know the most important factor is skill, not gender. Now I am finally letting someone else take charge of my facial. I’d had horrible experiences over the years with facial at different spas, where I’d left with burning, raw- 16 feeling skin that took hours to calm down. After some bad experiences I was determined I would never get another facial - until Spa Esencia. From the moment I arrived to my appointment I was greeted with a smile by the receptionist and I was told that someone will come down to get me. When Ava the esthetician came to get me she informed me about Spa Esencia and the procedure that I am going to take. She was considerate, paying attention to what was my intake on facial was and asking me about my skin concerns. This is my 1st visit here, and I can honestly say I’ve not experienced any problem. The accommodating staff was focused on my needs and has never failed to deliver. As I was awaiting my facial, I enjoyed a complimentary glass of cool cucumber water and listened to the soothing sounds and took in the scents from the spa. When my esthetician came to walk me to the room which is very large, she mentioned to me that all rooms are suited with a massage bed, a bathtub and your own personal bathroom and a great view overlooking the sea. She explained what is acupressure facial which is the name of the facial I was going to get. Acupressure Facial is incorporating ancient healing tradition of Asia with modern skin care techniques and custom products, she also explained that this treatment firms and tones the skin, increase circulation and relaxes the body and mind while restoring optimal energy levels. She was very informative throughout my entire facial. She told me the name of the product she was using, her hand was so soft … she kept checking with me to see how I was feeling, which is what I’d told her I needed. The experience itself was divine - plenty of deep cleansing, but also soothing massage on my face. After my acupressure facial therapy which was 1st rated she left me to relax in the room. This was graciously followed with a refreshing glass of cool cucumber water and dried fruits when I lest the room. When I left the spa - no inflammation, no irritation - just the glow I’d been hoping for. I would definitely return for more experiences. I left there feeling pampered, comforted. Ava customized the experience for me and gave me recommendations about caring for my face. I will suggest this spa for anyone looking for one on one personal attention in a serene environment. 20% discount on Spa treatments from Aug-Sept 2010 for TTARP members. This is only valid Monday-Thursdays. At the ripened age of 85, his quiet demeanour and welcoming exterior exude a deep and uncluttered understanding of life, human potential and associated challenges. “It’s all about the ability to get along with people of all walks of life. To have a friendly, positive outlook and a sympathetic approach to all matters facing you,” is how Dolsingh sums up his life’s experiences thus far. Born at Fullerton Village, Cedros , in 1925, Dolsingh attended the Lochmaben R.C. School and then went on to Naparima College, San Fernando. Even though he made full use of those early school years, which landed him a job as a sales clerk in the accounts department of the now defunct R.J. Shannon & Company (Trinidad) Limited (Agent for NCR Corporation ), Dolsingh still harboured a yearning for more knowledge. He went on to attend various professional and academic programmes, which assisted him greatly in climbing the corporate ladder. These include Dale Carneige’s “Effective Speaking, Leadership Training and Human Relations;” “Business Administration and Personnel Management” from the University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine and an N.C.R. Management Seminar from the N.C. R World Headquarters in Dayton, Ohio, USA. Armed with this new knowledge, Dolsingh subsequently made his way up the ranks of the company to Office Manager, Administrative Manager and finally to R. J. Shannon’s Board of Directors - first as a director, then later as Managing Director. “I was always ready to assist any member of staff to improve their knowledge of the business and I constantly sought new ways and means of providing better and more convenient working conditions for them,” said Dolsingh, who assisted in growing that company from five employees to more than 200, with sub offices throughout the Eastern Caribbean and Guianas. His new portfolios ushered with them his world travels to visit other factories within the N.C. R group. “As part of my duties, I was required to visit other factories. On several occasions I visited the Dayton and Toronto factories and made a tour of the London Office, the Dundee factory and offices in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Paris and New York,” said Dolsingh, who made quite a favourable impression upon the N.C.R people he met on his journeys. 18 by Peter Campbell Honorary Secretary Mrs. Mayling Younglao presents Mr. Rupert Dolsingh, one of TTARP’s founding members, with an Award of Excellence; It was this ability of making favourable impressions that also caught the eyes of his future wife, Monica Ali from St James. After their first encounter the feeling was instantly mutual, but Ali was mindful of her Muslim upbringing and how would she fit in with this prospective suitor, a Hindu. But as time passed, their love for each other transcended religion. Monica, the Muslim girl from St James and Rupert, the Hindu boy from Cedros, both enjoyed a simple, loving courtship, and were married on December 17, 1949. Two years into the union, they would again exchange vows, but this time as converts to Catholicism in a Christian ceremony. The fruits of that marriage brought forth two children, Michael and Karen, and later on three grandchildren. Even with all his business travels, family was always a priority for Rupert, who remembers the loving, close relationship he enjoyed with his family. “Monica and I would always share at least one meal together every day when I was at home and not travelling,” recalls Dolsingh. On his retirement in January 1981, after a dedicated, hard-working and successful 40 year tour-of-duty in the business world, Dolsingh could not simply curl up, so he established his own company – Rupert Dolsingh Business Services in May 1984, mainly to liquidate RJ Shannon & Co. and the West India Club. While this new business venture took up most of his time, Dolsingh still found opportunities to share his expertise and business acumen with various organisations in capacities as the President of the Trinidad and Tobago Business Association; member of the Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce; Member and Associate member of the Port-of-Spain Junior Chamber and Director of The Royal Bank Trust Company Limited. Other organisations in which he has served prominently include the Rotary Club of Central Port-ofSpain; Trinidad and Tobago society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TSPCA) and he is a past member of the Royal Commonwealth Society, England. His involvement with the Rotary Club allowed for his attendance at many international conventions including Canada, France and Australia. In 1995 he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow for his outstanding work with the organisation and was made an Honorary Member in 2003. He cites one of his greatest accomplishments to date as being a founding member of TTARP in 1993 and part of first Executive Team. “TTARP is a strong voice for the over 50 age group lobbying Government for lower taxes, more security, more health care protection, better pension benefits and more response from government for mature citizens,” said Dolsingh, adding that the Association keeps growing stronger over the years Dolsingh credits all his accomplishments to integrity, sound judgment and the many years of support from his wife (now deceased). “She (Monica) understood the art of maintaining harmony in the household. We never quarrelled in front of the children and she knew when to choose her battles and when to give in,” said Dolsingh, adding that sometimes he would come home irritable and she would know when to keep the children away and give him some time to settle down. “I wasn’t always easy you know,” he quipped. With 21 YOUR GLASSES Dr valmiki karmel md mb chb (Bristol) frcs ophth Consultant eye specialist/surgeon (u.k) Subspecialist vitreo-retinal surgeon Member of American society of retinal specialists It’s a common myth that your glasses need to be changed regularly. In Trinidad it is recommended that they are checked every two years which is a sensible guideline to follow. Most prescriptions are stable over long periods of time and more often than not your old worn pair of glasses is find and do their job. They may just not look great anymore. The easiest way to know when they need to be changed is when your sight is blurred out of both eyes, or either eye, or, that you get headaches after wearing them for a while. Your eyes will not be harmed by a wrong, or old prescription, they will simply not feel right. At your appointment most common eye diseases can also be assessed and a referral made to a medical doctor. The strength of our glasses is dependent on the length of eye, the curvature of it and the distance between the various bits that make up the eye. Those that need spectacles are divided into two groups: short sighted and long sighted. Short sighted people can read up close but cannot see far without glasses and long sighted folks need glasses to see things close up. As you get older your prescription can suddenly change often without there being any underlying cause to worry about. The most common example is when we cross the forty year barrier and can no longer read small print. Simple short term solutions we employ to get around that problem are to squint, or, to stretch our arms out at a length. It lasts only for a while before we really need to purchase a pair of reading glasses. The cause has been found to be a loss of flexibility of our natural lens which sits behind our pupil and this unfortunately becomes worse as we get older. One common sign that you may be developing a cataract is your glasses no longer work. In fact we may have to change them quite frequently until a cataract is found to be the underlying cause. The reason is that some form of cataracts permanently 22 alter the density of our natural lens and as a result the strength of our glasses. Once the cataracts are removed (they usually come in pairs) your prescription can incorporated into your implant. Some implants have the means to assist you in reading and you will no longer be dependent on glasses. These implants are a lot more expensive and sometimes do not work. Corrective laser surgery is usually reserved for the younger age group and you should consult your ophthalmologist to see if you are a candidate for the procedure. The decision should not be taken lightly because there are inherent risks. The general rule of thumb is that the thicker your glasses the more tissue needs to be cut to etch the required prescription on your eye and this will weaken the structural integrity of the cornea. 102 Royal Palm Plaza Saddle Road, Maraval Port of Spain +868 628 4997 youreyeclinic.net [email protected] continued from last issue Tips for aging & sex Most men consider an active and satisfying sex life to be one of the most important parts of their lives. Yet many of them needlessly let their relationship waste away because they don’t have their priorities straight. Great sex is the result of an excellent relationship, not the cause of it. Being a good lover is not a matter of having extra-large physical equipment, knowing the “correct” technique, or being able to last all night. It’s a matter of knowing, understanding and caring for your partner. To renew that bond, consider a few recommendations: Tell her that you find her attractive Many guys assume that one compliment is good for years. Think about it, though. Can you imagine being told too often that you look good? Do you feel sexier when you’ve been complimented on your physique? it’s unlikely that you’ll receive it. Likewise, ask her what she prefers. Communication in bed can work wonders. Be imaginative Monotony is the death of good sex. This doesn’t necessarily involve gymnastics. Spontaneity, which can as simple as choosing different places and times, is what’s important. Above all, focus on you and your partner’s pleasure, not measure. It’s not how big, how often, or how long. It’s how good you both feel. Sexual health and aging: Keep the passion alive Sexual health is important — at any age. Find out how aging can affect sexuality and what you can do to maintain a fulfilling sex life after 50. Dr. Janice Swanson Take your time In the rush of every day life, sex too often doesn’t get time for warm-up. Try thinking of the entire day as foreplay. Be attentive and romantic at breakfast before you leave in the morning. Take her to lunch. Linger over conversation at dinner. Anticipation is at least half the fun. This view was shared by a special TTARP senior (80 years young), whom I met after she completed a pedicure at our Clinic. She also felt that her peers ought to be concerned enough overall, to make their grand kids especially proud of them, instead of being ashamed - views I totally support. Though it was her second visit, it was the first time we’d met. My mantra - to mature as gracefully as possible - with foot care being a critical part of it! Our feet affect our posture, balance, as well as our ability to remain active. They contain innumerable nerve endings, and at times are the indicators of our overall state of health and conditioning. In fact, the symptoms associated with some diseases such as diabetes, circulatory problems and arthritis are first displayed through our feet. Importance of the Feet The entire weight of our bodies is supported by our feet. Each foot has 28 bones, 19 muscles, 107 ligaments, and 33 joints, nerves and tendons. When we stand, the weight of our body is transferred to the other foot bones through our ankle bones. Here are some interesting foot facts: • Our feet contain about 25% of the total bones present in our body. • Women are four times more likely to develop foot ailments as compared to men. • The average person takes around 8,000 to 10,000 steps daily; in his overall life that’s about 115, 000 miles. • An average man walks for about seven miles in a day, whereas an average woman walks for about ten miles in a day. • Most foot ailments are because of wearing ill-fitting or inappropriate shoes. • With every step that we take, a force of about twice our body’s weight is produced upon the feet. While running, a force of about three or four times our body’s weight is produced. Problems Commonly Faced by Seniors Foot problems are quite common in older people, for a variety of reasons. Feet lose cushioning as they age, and the skin and nails can grow dry and brittle. Many seniors have poor circulation, and this can slow the healing of foot sores. Another serious problem is thickened and discoloured nails, which many don’t realise are not only infected, but can be contagious. We actually have a few clients in their 90’s whose relatives are happy to have found an environment where they can be comfortable while being serviced. Another important fact that should be kept in mind is that our feet can become wider in our later years. Clients who sometimes have to test for insoles become exasperated, since they tell you that they aren’t sure what‘s happening, as each time they go to shop for shoes, “the size just seems to be changing.” Trust me, you’re not alone! Useful Tips for Healthier Feet With the overview you’ve been presented, I’m sure you will agree that it’s important to pay attention to your feet. Further, on noticing a problem – promptly seek medical attention. The following should also be noted: • Check your feet regularly or have a family member do the honours. • Keep the blood circulating - put your feet up when sitting or lying down. • Wear comfortable shoes. Avoid tight or high-heeled shoes; the constant rubbing and pinching are a major cause of corns, calluses, bunions, and even infection. • Don’t sit for long periods of time (especially with your legs crossed). • Don’t walk barefooted, particularly diabetics. • Don’t smoke: it increases the chance of swelling, narrows the arteries, and can hamper blood flow. We provide Therapeutic Pedicures / Manicures / Massages and other specialist services for seniors, including those who need too have their nails maintained. The next year, he didn’t buy her a gift. When she asked him why, he replied, “Well, you still haven’t used the gift I bought you last year!” And that’s how the fight started… ******************************* I asked my wife, ‘Where do you want to go for our anniversary?’ It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation. ‘Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!’ she said. So I suggested, ‘How about the kitchen?’ And that’s when the fight started... ******************************* My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, ‘Do you want to have sex?’ ‘No,’ she answered. I then said, ‘Is that your final answer?’ She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying ‘Yes.’ 26 So I said, ‘Then I’d like to phone a friend.’ And that’s when the fight started... ******************************* I tried to talk my wife into buying a case of Miller Light for $14.95. Instead, she bought a jar of cold cream for $7.95. I told her the beer would make her look better at night than the cold cream. And that’s when the fight started... ******************************* I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. ‘I’ll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.’ He said, ‘Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?’ ‘Nah, she can order for herself.’ And that’s when the fight started... ********************** My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping the channels. She asked, ‘What’s on TV?’ I said, ‘Dust.’ And then the fight started... ******************************* continued from page 13 to have gone completely over the heads of our educators. Because the very basic family tenets have been overlooked or discarded, we are left with a society that does not realise that an animal has basic needs and that they too have feelings, as does a human. Are you getting the picture? It is really so basic and fundamental but momentous if grasped by the masses. Crime has come of age; we are reaping what we have taught our children for the past 30 years and we need to slam on the brakes and reverse the downhill decent. It can be done and we need to start RIGHT NOW, in the classroom, with the animals. I foresee positive changes within the next ten to fifteen years. Yes, it will take that long but if we do not make a start, it can only get worse - total lawlessness, and worst of all, lack of compassion for our fellow human man. Life has become cheap. angel wings. What a fantastic group of people, I applaud you whole heartedly. We also have several young vets and some maybe not so young (smile) that give generously of their time. I recently assisted, in a very small way, a wonderfully enthusiastic and caring vet perform spay and neutering operations on some homeless cats who are resident on the South Wharf. Notice the conditions under which he has to operate. My question here is, couldn’t we as a group of retired caring animal lovers come together and purchase a small second hand van that could be equipped as a roving ambulance? Is there anybody out there willing to take on this challenge? Does anyone care? I have written a children’s book entitled “Laila – A Trini “pothound” A tale of Survival. It is aimed at the young and seeks to instil in them all of the values I have mentioned above. It is my fervent hope that it could be put in every child’s school bag. Perhaps our present Minister, Dr. Tim Gopeesingh would be will to “try a ting!” as all else appears to have failed. As a final note remember a pet can return love, give comfort and it is also a fact that a pet can enhance and prolong life. We have evidence of cats having coexisted with humans as far back as 4000BC. We see cats depicted in many wall paintings as part of the agricultural scene; where there is grain there are rats and mice. For thousands of years cats have roamed the homes and castles of our ancestors and in Egypt were even elevated to the status of Gods. Perhaps Cleopatra and her feline entourage would make a nice topic for another article! How is it that we can walk past an animal in obvious need of care and attention, perhaps a broken leg or worse, and feel nothing? If our hearts have become so hardened to suffering then God help us! There are a few battling against all odds to alleviate the wilful neglect and suffering of animals. A wonderful sanctuary was recently opened in Oropouche, A NO KILL facility!
