Welcome to Yacht Havens
40 years ago, we opened for business in Lymington,
a marina built by yachtsmen for yachtsmen. In those days
it was a great novelty to be able to park your car, and step
on and off your boat, without rowing out to a mooring,
or climbing down a ladder. In fact this extended many
customers’ boating activities by a good decade.
Most of you will know your marina manager;
please let them know your thoughts on improving things
at your Yacht Haven.

Now good facilities, comprehensive services and helpful
staff are what we aim to provide.
Dylan Kalis, third generation, is now managing director,
keeping up the family tradition.

Welcome to Plymouth Yacht Haven
“…one of Europe’s most spectacular waterfronts”
Financial Times, on Plymouth, 14/11/2009
Located in Clovelly Bay, at the mouth of the
Cattewater, Plymouth Yacht Haven is sheltered
from the prevailing south westerly winds yet is only
minutes from one of England’s finest natural
harbours, Plymouth Sound. From here the choice is
yours, a day’s sailing to Salcombe, Fowey, Torquay
or Dartmouth, a longer passage taking in Falmouth,
Penzance and on to the Isles of Scilly, the Channel
Islands, or to the north and west coast of France.
Deep water throughout the marina allows freedom
at all states of tide. In rough weather, Plymouth
Sound and local rivers allow for hours of sheltered
scenic sailing.
Within easy reach of the marina are many beautiful
coastal walks, a golf course, and just a short stroll
away, a fitness centre with squash courts and a
heated swimming pool. Also available is a ferry
to take berth holders to a multitude of shops,
restaurants, bars and nightlife to enjoy within the
historic atmosphere in the cobbled streets of the
Barbican.
The marina has berths for 450 vessels with a
mixture of finger and alongside berths, and we can
cater for vessels of up to 45 metres in length and
7 metres draft. All berths offer electricity and water
services. Visitors are welcome at any time. Please
call on VHF channel 80 – Plymouth Yacht Haven. If
you need assistance getting in or out of your berth,
please just ask.
Our friendly and helpful staff provide cover for the
marina 24 hours a day. The marina’s boatyard
facilities include a 75 ton hoist, whilst for smaller
vessels there is our state-of-the-art indoor dry stack
marina and acres of dry storage at nearby Yacht
Haven Quay. We look forward to welcoming you!
Laura Whinney
Marina Manager
A short walk across Plymouth Hoe gives access to
one of the major shopping centres in the southwest
along with a host of tourist attractions for those
days when sailing is not an option, including
cinemas, theatres and museums.
We hope that you will enjoy your stay, whether it is
for the night, the summer, a year or a decade!

TURNCHAPEL & MOUNT BATTEN
Plymouth Yacht Haven nestles in the shelter of
Clovelly Bay against a backdrop of the Devon hills,
the pretty village of Turnchapel with its brightly
painted houses, and the historic Mount Batten
peninsula.
From the marina, Turnchapel is a short stroll along
the South West Coast Path, and can also be reached
by dinghy – it’s just a few oar-strokes from the
marina to the village beaches. The village has two
welcoming pubs which also offer meals and
accommodation: The Clovelly Bay Inn and the
Boringdon Arms. Turnchapel’s history is that of a
traditional fishing village and of boat building. The
village was designated a Conservation Area in 1974.
The peninsula of Mount Batten was a much loved
leisure area throughout the 1800s, but for most of
the 20th century was off limits to the public and
used by the RAF as a base for flying boats. Its most
famous resident was Aircraftsman Shaw, better
known as officer and writer T E Lawrence
(Lawrence of Arabia) who was based there from
1929 until 1934, and today you will notice road
names on the peninsula such as Shaw Way and
Lawrence Road.
Although flying from Mount Batten ceased in the
1960s, the RAF only relinquished the base in 1992,
and since then it has once again become a popular
leisure area, incorporating a hotel, pub and
restaurant, a large water- sports centre, and of
course Plymouth Yacht Haven marina and a number
of associated services. The two hangars that still
stand today were built in 1917 to accommodate
seaplanes and are now a hive of activity, housing
boat-builders and repairers, marine engineers,
sailmakers, upholsterers, furniture restorers and
a chandlery.
Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre
offers a wide range of activities for adults,
children or families, including sailing, kayaking,
climbing & abseiling, caving, coasteering,
windsurfing and powerboating.

HOW TO FIND US BY SEA
View nautical charts in full screen
(like a chart plotter) with zoomable
interface at www.yachthavens.com
Reproduced from Admiralty Chart 1967 by permission of the UK Hydrographic Office.
All material supplied remains Crown Copyright. Not to be used for navigation.
Plymouth Sound can be entered via the Western or Eastern channels which are well lit and buoyed with no real hazards.
There is not less than 3.7 metres of depth at MLWS and so is navigable by most yachts at all states of the tide.
Head for the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club situated on Plymouth Hoe. Once the Mount Batten breakwater is passed to
starboard, follow the Cattewater channel, where you will see Plymouth Yacht Haven on your starboard side. If you
require a berth, please contact us on VHF Channel 80 or by telephone on 01752 404231.
For Yacht Haven Quay, continue up the Cattewater, leaving Plymouth Yacht Haven to starboard. Our waiting pontoons
are on the eastern riverbank, approximately 500 metres downstream of the Laira road bridge. You will find it hard to miss
the Drystack building dominating the skyline!

BOATYARD INFORMATION
Plymouth Yacht Haven has a wide range of
boatyard facilities – available Monday to Friday.
Ou 75 ton boat hoist can lift vessels with a beam of
up to 6.5 metres from a deep-water dock. Boats can
be held in the hoist for an hour, overnight or over
the weekend, and pressure washing facilities are
available. For longer periods of storage ashore,
vessels can hire cradles or be securely chocked.
Storage ashore can be arranged from just a week to
the whole winter season, and we also have a
limited amount of indoor storage space inside our
hangar. Storage ashore is fully serviced with
electricity and water, and has 24 hour security.
Other boatyard facilities include a crane for mast or
engine lifts, a tractor & trailer, and a forklift – all
with driver provided! Mast lifting and storage is
also offered.
On site you will find a wide range of other
companies to help you with your boat
maintenance, including rigging services, sailmakers,
upholstery, chandlers, traditional and GRP boat
repairs, stainless steel fabrication, electronic
services and marine engineers.
Back in the water we provide towing or boat
movements within the marina basin or to/from
Yacht Haven Quay.
DIY launch and recovery is possible from our
slipway, available for boats of up to 7.5m. For larger
vessels, a dry berthing service may be available,
including storage ashore, and one lift out and
launch per week. For motor vessels under 35’ in
length seeking a flexible dry berthing option, look
no further than our state-of-the-art indoor dry-stack
marina at nearby Yacht Haven Quay.

YOUR SAFETY
For your safety and enjoyment please be sure to follow
the guidelines below. Comprehensive marina rules can
be found on the reverse of your berthing contract. All
boats and contractors using the marina facility, ashore
or afloat, must have a minimum of £3,000,000 third
party insurance.
General
• Please familiarise yourself with the location of
lifesaving and fire fighting equipment on the
pontoons and ashore. You will find safety ladders,
fire fighting and life saving equipment close to every
red-topped pontoon pile and at other locations
throughout the marina. A map of pontoon safety
equipment can be found here and at each
bridgehead.
• Please take extra care when wet or icy, avoid running
on the pontoons and always ensure appropriate
footwear is worn. Special care should be taken at
night.
• Please report all accidents and potential accidents to
the marina reception immediately. Please also report
any defective or damaged marina equipment
immediately.
• Please ensure all children and non swimmers wear a
life jacket at all times. Children should not wander
unaccompanied around the site.
• Please observe the 5 mile/hour speed limit on land.
• Please do not allow children to ‘ride’ in the trolleys.
• Swimming and scuba diving are not permitted in the
marina.
• Please do not speed in the marina, mind your wash
and keep below 2 knots.
• Dinghies and tenders should be stored on board to
prevent obstruction to adjacent berths.
• Please do not use stern tie-off lines to adjacent
fingers. This stops the berth being used, and
constitutes a hazard.
• Please do not use chains & shackles to moor your
boat to the pontoon – this can hinder us in moving
your boat away from its berth in an emergency.
• Do not remove supports from vessels in the yard, or
run engines of vessels stored ashore. All furling sails
must be removed prior to boats being lifted.
• Always isolate gas and fuel when leaving your boat.
PLYMOUTH YACHT HAVEN T: 01752 404231
2012 HANDBOOK & TIDE TABLES
• Please do not ride bicycles, skates or scooters on the
pontoons.
• Please do not allow dogs to foul the marina If they
do, please clean up and hose down the area.
• Always use own hosepipe for drinking water and
filling water tanks, and never leave hoses running or
hanging in the water.
• Be aware of the sailing ‘rules of the road’ and the
implications of the collision regulations. Pass other
vessels port to port.
• If an independent contractor is employed to work on
your boat, please advise us beforehand. We require
evidence of their public liability insurance.
In Case of a Fire on Board
• Sound the alarm situated at either bridgehead and
notify the marina staff.
• Call 999.
• Only tackle the fire if it is safe to do so with the
extinguishers provided in the emergency cabinets.
• Retreat to a safe distance and locate the nearest Fire
Assembly (Muster) Point.
• Do not obstruct the bridges as access will be
required by the emergency service and marina staff.
We aim to provide a relaxed and safe environment for
you to enjoy your boating in and ask that all marina
rules and regulations are followed.

THINGS TO DO ASHORE
Plymouth’s Tourist Information Centre is situated
on the Barbican, close to the historic Mayflower
Steps. Here you can collect up to date information
about forthcoming events, theatre timetables and
food/music festivals, as well as hundreds of
suggestions for a day exploring the city and
local area.
A wander through the Barbican’s tiny cobbled lanes
will take you to the hidden Elizabethan House and
its peaceful gardens, or you could take a tour of
Plymouth Gin (the oldest working gin distillery in
the world!). Alternatively just relax with a drink at
one of the cafes on the quay, and watch the world
go by.
The National Maritime Aquarium is also on the
Barbican and includes the best collection of sharks
and manta rays in Europe, the UK’s largest
collection of marine life in over 50 tanks, and a
4D cinema.
Plymouth’s City Museum and Art Gallery contains
collections of fine art, decorative art, human
history and natural history, and is complemented
by changing exhibitions touring from national
galleries.
On Plymouth Hoe, you can admire the views from
the top of iconic Smeaton’s Tower, and the spot
where Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game
of bowls before defeating the Spanish Armada,
before a walk along the Victorian promenade with
an ice cream, or a dip in the renovated art-deco
Tinside Outdoor Pool.
At Royal William Yard, there are a number of
waterfront bars and restaurants with lovely views
of the Tamar, and frequent art exhibitions too.
Saltram House and Gardens is a wonderful National
Trust property which can be reached by foot or
bicycle along a riverside path, or in a few minutes
by car. It has lovely landscaped gardens and an
impressive Georgian House which was the location
for Sense and Sensibility.
PLYMOUTH YACHT HAVEN T: 01752 404231
You could take a short ferry ride to Mount
Edgcumbe to explore its beautiful house and
gardens, and to enjoy some glorious coast path
walking with stunning sea views. There is also
beautiful coast path walking to be found from the
marina itself, following Plymouth Sound and the
coast towards the River Yealm, with access to
several tiny beaches along the way.
Plymouth has a timetable of great events
throughout the year. Here are some of our
favourites:
27-30 April 2012 – Jazz & Blues Festival
19 May 2012 – Olympic Torch in Plymouth
03 June 2012 – Start of Two Handed
Transatlantic Race
21 – 29 July 2012 – Port of Plymouth Regatta
14-15 August 2012 – British Firework Championships
08-16 September 2012 – Plymouth Marine Festival
On any day of the week or year, you will find plenty
of entertainment in Plymouth. There is a multiplex
cinema and ten pin bowling at the Barbican Leisure
Park, and an interesting calendar of performances
at the Theatre Royal, Drum Theatre and Plymouth
Arts Centre.
Staddon Heights Golf Club welcomes visitors, and
offers 18 holes of golf with fantastic views over
Plymouth Sound. Own equipment required.
Fort Stamford Health & Fitness Centre has a gym,
aerobics studio, squash courts, pool and beauty
therapies. Visitors are welcome and there are a
variety of activities taking place each day and
evening.
Children will enjoy a visit to Plymouth Pavilions
which has both an indoor ice rink and a fun pool
with water slides. And for something a bit different
– you could spend the day at the Ski & Snowboard
Centre practising your turns on a dry ski slope!

2012 HANDBOOK & TIDE TABLES
DAY SAILING & ANCHORAGES
The waters around Plymouth are in many ways an undiscovered gem of the South-West. Whatever your
boating interest, there's something on offer locally. We've put together a selection of some of our favourite
lunchtime or overnight destinations as a starting point, and if you'd like more information, please just ask
our Haven Team.
Around Plymouth Sound:
Barn Pool:
Providing good shelter from the S-SW, this
attractive little bay nestles beneath the grandeur
of the National Trust's Mount Edgcumbe Estate.
Anchor close to the steeply shelving beach,
from where it's a couple of minutes walk to the
Edgcumbe Arms. A perfect lunch stop, only a
couple of miles from Plymouth Yacht Haven, and a
perfect place from which to observe the warships
leaving and returning to the dockyard. It's worth
setting an anchor trip line due to underwater
obstructions.
Jennycliff:
If the wind is in the east, it's possible to tuck in
under the sheer cliffs at Jennycliff, between
Mountbatten Breakwater and Fort Bovisand. This
is particularly useful when Cawsand is untenable.

Exploring West of Plymouth
Cawsand Bay:
A popular anchorage with good holding and plenty
of space, just off the twin villages of Kingsand and
Cawsand. Sheltered in the prevailing winds,
particularly the south-west, this can be a wonderful
lunchtime or overnight stop. There's plenty of room
to land on the beach and sample one of the several
good pubs whilst admiring your boat. Although
only a few miles from Plymouth Yacht Haven, this
bay feels like a different part of the world, largely
because it's tucked away on a peninsula and takes
what seems like several days to travel to by road!
Looking East from Cawsand
Entering Polperro, the distinctive Peak Rock to port
Polperro:
Approximately 16 miles west of Plymouth and
nestled amongst spectacularly rugged cliffs,
Polperro makes a great lunchtime or overnight
stop in settled weather. Often bypassed because
of its proximity to Fowey, Polperro is the epitome
of the Cornish fishing village, with a steep hill
running down past whitewashed cottages to a
classical granite harbour. Berthing within the
harbour is limited and tidal, but there are a handful
of vistors moorings in the entrance, and small
boats can land at the end of the eastern pier.
It’s one of our favourite destinations for a day out!

2012 HANDBOOK & TIDE TABLES
Fowey:
Probably one of the best known of the Cornish
harbours which you probably don’t need us to tell
you about! But if you haven’t yet found your way
here, it makes the perfect weekend destination if
cruising from Plymouth Yacht Haven – a mere 22 or
so miles distant, with deepwater access, sheltered
moorings, beautiful scenery and plenty to do
ashore – eateries to suit every taste, and plenty of
interesting galleries and shops.
The approach and entrance to Fowey is
straightforward; but in busy times call Fowey
Harbour Radio on VHF Ch 12 and the helpful
harbour staff will guide you to a mooring. There are
no marinas in the harbour but there are three shortstay (max 2 hours) walk ashore pontoons – two in
Fowey and one in Polruan on the eastern bank.
However the best thing to do is either pick up a
visitor’s mooring in the harbour and either use your
dinghy or the water taxi to get ashore – call Fowey
Water Taxi on VHF Ch 06.
Our tip for a visit here is not to overlook Polruan – it
has two great pubs, the Lugger and the Russell, a
brilliant grocery and general store and some
spectacular clifftop walks.

PLYMOUTH YACHT HAVEN T: 01752 404231
Beyond Fowey, the coast turns to the SW and hides
a variety of fascinating spots. Anchor off Polkerris
and enjoy as trip to the Rashleigh Arms or “Sams on
the Beach” – a particularly good spot for children
as the beach is sheltered and great for swimming.

Mevagissey:
On the Western side of St Austell Bay are the twin
villages of Mevagissey and Gorran Haven.
Mevagissey welcomes visiting yachts whenever
possible. Berths are available on the South pier,
which is safe as long as the wind is not in the East. If
wind is from the East it’s recommended to proceed
to Fowey. Visiting craft must not moor in the inner
harbour and should ask permission if they need to
enter. For bilge keel yachts and twin hulls that can
take the beach safely there is normally space
available on the East side of the West Quay. There
is a trot of 3 cylindrical visitors buoys, to moor fore
and aft, inside the harbour mouth adjacent to the
north pier. The harbour master can be contacted on
VHF channel 16, using channel 14 as a working
channel, or telephone 01726 843305.
Coastline near Mevagissey
Exploring East of Plymouth:
From Plymouth to Salcombe is an easy run of
approximately 20nm. However, there are
numerous anchorages and coves worthy of
exploration beyond the River Yealm.
Cellar Bay:
Tucked just inside the mouth of the River Yealm,
this secluded spot is a perfect swimming
destination in settled weather. Deep keeled boats
will need to check tide-tables and be aware of the
sandbar in the river entrance, but this really is an
ideal spot for a picnic. On a rising tide, it's great to
follow a stop here with a meander up the creek at
Noss Mayo, where you can tie up alongside the pub
at high water and sample the delights of these
pretty twin villages.
Looking East from the Dodman; a great anchorage
with the wind from the West and a beautiful
secluded beach.
PAGE
42
Wonwell Beach, eastern side of the River Erme
Stoke Beach:
At the western end of Bigbury Bay and
approximately 3 miles to the east of the mouth of
the River Yealm. With the wind in the north or west,
a pretty and sheltered short stopover, and a
popular yet uncrowded beach for swimming.
Mothecombe Beach:
Mothecombe Beach, identified by the old tea-room,
constructed by the owners of Flete in the last
century for private picnics, is privately owned by
the Flete Estate, but is open to the public on certain
days of the week. For more information, visit
www.flete.co.uk. The estuary to the east and north
of the beach dries at LW, but is a mecca for
paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing, and can
be explored upstream by dinghy for a couple of
miles. The estuary is carefully managed as a haven
for wildlife, and kingfishers, cormorants and herons
are just some of the many species which may be
spotted.
Mothecombe Beach
2012 HANDBOOK & TIDE TABLES
The River Erme:
Quite possibly one of the most unspoilt stretches of
the Devon coastline, the mouth of the Erme is a
beautiful location in settled conditions. There is
limited depth inshore; it is possible to wade across
the river from Mothecombe to Wonwell an hour
either side of low tide. However, don’t let this put
you off as the wide expanse of flat sands are firm
enough to dry out motor boats and bilge keelers,
and in offshore winds, an anchorage can be found
on the western side of the estuary mouth.
Between the Erme and the River Avon, the cliffs are
spectacular, backing onto mainly National Trust
farmland. There are a small number of offlying
rocks, so a large scale chart of the area is as ever,
recommended. Another 3nm to the east will be
found Burgh Island, which is always best passed to
the south.
PAGE
43
Burgh Island, from the west
2012 HANDBOOK & TIDE TABLES
Burgh Island, the River Avon, and Bantham:
Whilst on passage from Plymouth to Salcombe and
beyond, Burgh Island tends to blend into the
coastline, but in a small boat and settled weather, is
well worth a closer look. Separated from the
mainland by a tidal causeway and famous for its Art
Deco style hotel, a favourite of Agatha Christie, this
really is one of the gems of the South Devon
coastline.
The entrance to the River Avon and Bantham is
tidal, but well worth exploring, particularly a couple
of hours before HW. A visit to the Sloop Inn at
Bantham should never be passed over, but you’ll
need to dry your boat on the beach as there are no
dedicated landing facilities.

causeway to Burgh Island, and Bigbury-on-Sea.
