Honoring - Maimonides School
Scholarship Adbook 2008–2009/5769 This book is dedicated to GRETA & JOSEPH ABELOW with admiration, affection and respect THE 2009/5769 MAIMONIDES SCHOOL VIRTUAL ADBOOK Maimonides School has published an annual collection of paid messages from its friends and supporters in the community for more than 60 years. Through the decades, the publication has been known by various appellations—the yearbook, the journal and, most recently, the adbook. The word “scholarship” is attached to the title, because contributions make it possible for the school to offer financial aid to every qualified applicant. Looking at the adbooks collectively, one can recognize improvements resulting from new technology. Movable type gave way to offset printing. Photographs were enhanced by clarity and color. When word processing arrived on the scene, most of the preparation for printing could be done in-house, including instant changes in layout and typography. Now we have reached a new year for the process, as the technology now permits the “publication” of a “virtual” adbook. Instead of a traditional book, guests at the Annual Gala are receiving a “flash drive” storage device that interfaces with a personal computer. Loaded onto that drive are the contents of the 2009 Adbook, which can be seen on your screen, and shared through electronic mail. The “pages” also will be projected onto large screens in the ballroom during the Gala. This adbook not only integrates state-of-the-art technology with the school’s traditional fundraising centerpiece. It also saves close to $20,000 in printing and delivery costs, and shortens the production deadline so we can accommodate more messages. Maimonides School’s “virtual” adbook is proud to take its place alongside other advances that we now take for granted: e-newsletters, shiurim on the Web and CDs, videoconferencing from Israel. New technology ensures that Maimonides School—in the words of Rabbi Isaiah Wohlgemuth, z”l—remains “modern as tomorrow ... yet firmly rooted in the eternal truth of the Divine Torah.” In Honor Of Joseph & Greta Abelow Mazel tov to JOE & GRETA ABELOW Maimonides role models for three generations With great appreciation and respect, Debbie & Jeff Swartz In honor of JOE & GRETA ABELOW, true heroes of the Maimonides family. Beth & Marc, Yael & Gabi ’00, Yoni ’02, Rachel, Ellie & Talia Dear Joe and Greta: We feel privileged to join our community in saluting you for what you have contributed to our lives over these many decades, and for what you continue to represent to our kehillah. Greta: you shaped the educational and moral development of our young impressionistic children in your first and third grade classrooms and in your tutorial sessions. Your unassuming and understated acts of chessed to individual members of our adult community have been inspiring and exemplary for those of us who happen to know of them. What your mother z”l – “Bubby Lena” – represented in Savannah, you have come to represent to us. Joe: how can we express our appreciation for so many years of thankless volunteer work on behalf of our school in fulfillment of the Rav’s vision? You continue to be the “torch-bearer” for the Rav’s mandate that we make our educational offerings available to each eligible child no matter how little the family can afford to pay. Your personal religious life – centered as it is around tefillah betzibbur, kevi’at ittim la-Torah and gemillat chessed – reflects in a substantive manner the formative influence of the Rav upon the young son of his good friend, Rabbi Leo Abelow z”l. Beth & Marc Yael & Gabi ’00, Yoni ’02, Rachel ’07, Ellie ’09, Talia ’12 Dear Michal: Who knew when you arrived in Boston 14 years ago that you would become such a pivotal figure in our extended community? By virtue of your natural pedagogic instincts, your warm personality and your professional dedication, you quickly became one of the most beloved teachers in our own school. When we had the opportunity to invest in the training of a few teachers as mentors, you were one of the first to be approached. At the Young Israel of Brookline, too, you have become one of their most sought-after teachers for the various women’s learning sessions. As in Maimonides School, you don’t just teach the values of Torah; you model them. How do you find time to be so involved in the Chevrat Chessed? Prompted by your drive to extend yourself always beyond minimal expectations, and with Dov’s support and encouragement, you undertook the responsibility to help develop and conduct our after-school “Growing Up” program. Your sensitivity, tact, judgment and empathy guaranteed its success. More recently, you have taught Ma’ayan’s mother-daughter pre-Bat-Mitzvah learning program. Again, your chein, your enthusiasm and your understated religious fervor inspired all the participants. May you and Dov continue to grace our community-at-large for many more years. You both personify its most cherished values.
