A bit of history: Before Europeans arrived the Chippewa tribes of the Ojibwa nation, a branch of the Algonquin language family, inhabited Northern Michigan. Archaeological finds indicate that they lived along the Great Lakes most of the year, and made annual gathering and hunting trips into the interior areas. There were some mounds in the Lewiston area that university archaeologist investigated years ago. Early Europeans arrived, and many were French explorers and trappers, exploring from the settlements in Canada. Montmorency was the name of an early French Bishop of Canada. Before the county was chartered in 1881, it was territorial Cheonoquet County, or “Big Cloud” in Ojibwa. It was also part of other counties as the state developed during the 1800’s. The Homestead Act of 1812 created land grants, and some early farmsteads have those, signed by U.S. Presidents of the day. Early settlers often built a log cabin first, and later, as they cleared land and had time to saw boards and dry them, frame homes and business buildings were built. Atlanta was named after Atlanta, Georgia, when Alfred J. West visited here, working on the Old State Road from Alpena to Traverse City. He felt the great white pine looked like the southern yellow pine stands in Georgia. Area Lakes Rivers & Streams Avalon, 372 acres, northwest of Hillman, has public access off County Road 459. George DeVriendt M-32 SUPPLY 785-5852 Tools Tarps • Chain Almost Everything Batteries • Golf-Carts Gifts Galore Open 6-days • Closed Sundays M-32 WEST OF ATLANTA He bought land here and developed a number of businesses to get Atlanta established. Hillman was named after John Hillman Stevens, who platted the town and gave it his middle name. The combination of wood frame buildings and wood-fired heating stoves was dangerous, and some of Hillman’s downtown burned several times, the worst in 1908. Lewiston got its name from Lewis Jensen, the company bookkeeper at the Michelson and Hanson Lumber Company. The company built three hotels, two mills and helped create the town. Perhaps the loggers in the lumber camps came in to “Lewis’s town” when they got paid, and it was quite a lively place on those paydays. The county seat started in Hillman, was sort of taken by Atlanta in an election, and another election would have moved it to Lewiston, but ballot-box fraud negated that election. Early railroads served the county for a short time, but as the economy changed when the pine was logged off, the county became a tourism destination with a mix of farming and light industry to support the commercial businesses. The county today: About 43 percent of the county is public land. Clear Lake State Park is well appointed for RV’s and travel trailers, state forest campgrounds are more rustic settings, and you can pick up a wilderness Mud Lake, 12.3 acres, north of Atlanta off M-33. Southern part of the Tomahawk Flooding. Avery, 175 acres, between Atlanta and Lewiston, has public access (two) off Avery Lake Road, including state campgrounds. Montmorency County is home to Michigan’s unique elk herd. An eastern variety elk was native to Michigan, but was killed off as food for lumber camps. Rocky Mountain elk were brought in and got established in the northwest quarter of the county, and have spread out from there. About 1000 elk is the target for wildlife managers, since any less and they are not very easy to find, and any more causes them to spread out into farm areas and cause crop damage. A limited hunt is held each year, to maintain approximately that target population. The area has long been a popular place for whitetail deer hunters. Wild turkey is a Michigan success story, and those were re-established near Fairview and have grown in population. Ruffed grouse and woodcock are popular game birds here. The area has black bear, bobcat and coyote, and a few wolves have been found, which migrated across the ice from the Upper Peninsula one cold winter. There have been sightings of cougar here, but that’s a statewide controversy. Bald eagles have nests in tall trees near some area lakes, and osprey were established in Fletcher Floodwater and maintain their numbers. Many ducks, geese and loons are favorites for people to watch on local lakes.
