The Altech Node is a fully converged home gateway console
that offers access to the latest in movie entertainment, TV
series, sports and business content, as well as wi-fi Internet

go, we want to plug in, log on, surf the
Internet, stream music, etc. It’s about
having access to everything and all of
the time. And wouldn’t it be great if
we could do all of this from our cars?
BMW owners can, thanks to BMW
ConnectedDrive Services and Apps.
And now with an updated version, there
are new mobility products and features
for an even more advanced system. All
local (except X1 and Z4) BMW models
will now come fitted with a built-in SIM
card as standard so that all owners
have access to BMW’s ConnectedDrive
Services and Apps.
WHAT IS BMW CONNECTEDDRIVE?
The idea is not to turn the car into
another mobile device, but rather to
convert the car into a virtual flow of
information into and out of the car via
a permanently installed SIM card that
connects to a mobile network.
The BMW ConnectedDrive system
incorporates a range of technologies
that connect the driver to the car and
the world outside. It makes telecommunications, information technology and
in-car systems instantly accessible.
WHAT DOES IT OFFER?
There are various elements available
under BMW ConnectedDrive. The range
of applications makes driving safer. It includes park assist, head-up display, BMW
night vision, anti-dazzle high-beam assist
and driving assistant or driving assistant
plus.
TeleServices connects the car to
BMW service centres. When a service
is due, the car’s service centre gets
an email so that its staff can contact
the owner to schedule the service. The
centre will know what maintenance the
vehicle requires and which checks need
to be done. As part of this package, the
intelligent emergency call system (with
automatic vehicle location and accident
severity detection) can instantly report
if a BMW’s involved in an accident – it is
standard across the range (excluding X1
and Z4). This feature can significantly reduce the time that elapses between the
occurrence of an on-road incident and
when emergency and rescue services
arrive at the scene.
The BMW Connected App provides
access to social networks (such as
Facebook and Twitter) and includes
web radio streaming and appointments
calendar functions. For yet greater
convenience while travelling, activities
can be researched through Google
Maps and Wiki Local.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
To begin, customers need to access the
BMW ConnectedDrive customer portal
at https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.
co.za. There they will find all information,
products and functions. Next, owners
need to register their vehicles online.
This registration will give them access
to their personal BMW ConnectedDrive
area so that they can make individual
settings and manage vehicle-related data
and services.
This personal area will show a graphic
of the customer’s vehicle including its
number plate and exterior colour. Below
this, the current vehicle status is displayed,
together with the active services that
have been loaded. Next to this is where
individual services can be configured or
add-on features activated. The latter
allows the scope of information and
entertainment functions to be adapted to
individuals’ requirements at any time.
Should customers wish to see which
new features, services and vehicle apps
are available, they simply need to visit
the BMW ConnectedDrive Store (only
available in SA from July 2015, this
will be incorporated into the ConnectedDrive portal).
Access to all these functions and
the BMW ConnectedDrive Store will be
available in the in-car menu of every new
BMW as of July next year. Owners will
then be able to call up a summary of all
BMW ConnectedDrive services available
for their vehicle.
They can then browse the product
page, select the services that they want,
choose how long they want these services
for and select a payment method stored in
the customer portal. Within the space of
a few minutes, the booked options will be
activated in the customers’ vehicles.
BROWSING AND APP ACCESS
BMW Online and browser-based applications will be available to BMW owners
thanks to the vehicle’s SIM card. Owners
can also download the BMW Connected
