A s many expected, Jeff Joy and David Schnitzer were re-elected to their respective positions of President and Treasurer. There were no “write in” candidates and the Club affairs are in Jeff and David’s hands for another two years. The two Board member positions were hotly contested by Clarence Behrend, Todd Ciske and John Lofgren. In the final count, only six votes separated the top and bottom candidates. In the end, it turned out both incumbents, John and Todd, will continue to serve as Board members for another two years. Remember: In 12 months we will be having another election for Vice President and Secretary along with two other Board positions. NOW is the best time to think about your own involvement. Attend an event or two. Attend a Board meeting and discover what goes on behind the scenes. Consider getting involved with an event, either in planning or implementation. Consider recommending a new event or activity. You may be surprised at how easy it is to become a vital part of the Badger Bimmers and enjoy the friendships along with the cars. You will always be welcome! bi 2005 National Elections Greenville, SC February 11, 2005 T he BMW Car Club of America, Inc. (BMW CCA) announced the winners of the 2005 elections. This year the only contested position for the Board of our not-forprofit membership association was that of Secretary, with the three regional positions all running unopposed. The winners of the election are: Treasurer: Secretary: South Atlantic RVP: North Central RVP: Pacific RVP: Louis Goldsman Bruce Hazard Carlos Diaz-Estrada Len Mueller Eddy Funahashi Bruce Hazard and Len Mueller will be installed in their respective positions at the Meeting of the BMW CCA Board of Directors on March 6, 2005 in Greenville, S.C. Congratulations to all winners, and thank you for you service to this organization. bi Spring Car Clean-up After all the salt, snow, and grime being on your car for this past winter season…. Would it not be nice to have your car washed for you and then detailed by yourself in an inside, heated facility? Mike Loos of O’Reilly Motorcars has once again opened the doors of his business for us to utilize. The Badger Bimmer Spring Car Clean-up will occur Saturday, April 23rd, 2005. This event will begin at 10:00 am. O’Reilly Motorcars is located at 324 West Cherry Street in Milwaukee. If you have any questions, please call Cindy Ansay at 262-388-7384. Paul Szedziewski, Membership Chair Page 4 I n June 2004, a dozen Badger Bimmers linked up with CGI Motorsports and spent a Monday at Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, Michigan. It was a very enjoyable event at a very safe and yet demanding road course. Gingerman is about two miles in length, with elevation changes, complex cornering and a lot of run off areas throughout the course. An added feature is that South Haven is a lakeshore community much like Door County with a great beach-front, shops, restaurants and other amenities for the rest of the family if you choose to make it a longer weekend outing. ’85 528e ’03 540i Happy Motoring!!! Travel by High-speed Ferry bi Again this year, we are looking into making use of the highspeed ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon. Cost of the ferry is $50 per person and $59 for a car, one-way. A round-trip totals $85/person and $118/car BUT, with the late departure time from Michigan, you may want to drive and be home a few hours earlier. More complete information and directions are available at: www.lake-express.com. So, if you like to drive, want to experience another track beyond Blackhawk Farms or Road America, you may want to mark down this date at Gingerman Raceway with the Badger Bimmers: July 18th. For more information on CGI, go to www. cgimotorsports.com. For more information on Gingerman go to www.gingermanraceway.com. Since CGI holds registrations for our group before others can sign up, please contact me no later than May 1, 2005 — Paul Szedziewski at [email protected] or at 414-264-4343. bi www.badgerbimmers.org BMW Adventures BMW Driver Training Adventure Trips Munich T he real experience is the process of getting there: In BMW Adventure Trainings and Adventure Trips, the actual training experience is enriched by another essential factor: These events combine exclusivity with individual style, a team experience with a club ambience, the thrill of travelling with mastery in controlling one’s car, and, not least, the joy of discovery with the experience of learning anew. Highly interesting training sessions are being offered in 2005: • BMW Winter Training in Austria and Scandinavia • BMW Z4 Roadster Adventure Trips • BMW X5 Adventure Trips • BMW M3 Nürburgring Nordschelife Circuit Training and the BMW M5 Nürburgring “Taxi” Experience offers lots of wonderful opportunities for a short vacation. BMW Z4 Roadster Adventure Trips: Driving “Topless” through the Most Beautiful Parts of Europe. In spring and summer, when the weather is just right for lowering the roof, the time is also right — if not to say, ideal — for BMW Z4 Roadster Adventure Trips through the most attractive countryside in Europe. Just two of the many destinations, by way of example, are the Tuscany Region in Italy or the Ticino Canton in Switzerland. Cruising in their Z4s, participants spend four wonderful days enjoying serpentine roads in the Italian part of Switzerland, in the Engadin Region, and in Italy itself. Experienced instructors very well acquainted with the location make sure that every bend is nothing but blissful pleasure on these glacier roads and mountain passes with their breathtaking panorama. And it almost goes without saying that these Z4 Adventure Trips come with an attractive accompanying programme organised to make all participants feel really at home: Specialities from the local cuisine pamper the Z4 drivers after their excursions through the unique countryside, to cultural and historic sights. BMW Winter Training: Elegant Pirouettes on Snow and Ice BMW X5 Adventure Trips: A Far-Out Experience for Man and Machine. BMW’s Winter Driver Training Sessions on snow and ice start each year in early December. The training locations are in Sölden, Austria and in Åre, Sweden. All of these training sessions have one asset in common: They offer a unique combination of successful learning in mastering your car on snow and ice with truly outstanding fun and a great experience. The Adventure Trip in the BMW X5 through Namibia south of the equator is certainly a unique way to combine that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW with a truly unusual vacation: This nine-day offroad adventure takes participants to one of the most beautiful and wildest regions in the world. Covering a distance of approximately 1,200 km or 750 miles, participants will experience numerous challenges for man and machine. Downhill gradients of up to 11%, gravel, sand, rocky tracks and a lagoon only accessible during low tide — these are The Winter Training Sessions in Sölden last two days. Participants drive a BMW 330i and other models in large, generously dimensioned training areas either in the valley or at the bottom of the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach Glaciers, as well as on cordoned-off sections of the mountain road between Sölden and the glacier area. In Åre, in the heart of Sweden’s largest Alpine skiing area, a large and again generously dimensioned ice surface on the lake directly in front of the hotel is reserved as the “dancing floor” for the BMW M3s with their studded tyres. Over and above the Training Sessions culminating in a truly unforgettable ice rally, the beautiful countryside on the Polar Circle www.badgerbimmers.org Continued on next page Page 5 BMW Training Adventures... the challenges you have to brave. On this exclusive safari, participants also learn how to navigate with an offroad GPS system and the roadbook, they practice the exact handling of their car in the dry moonscapes and mountainous sand dunes of the Namib Desert. The social programme on this unique trip leaves nothing to be desired: Participants are led by highly experienced, English- or German-speaking guides through the unique countryside in Namibia, experiencing both a wide variety of animals and species and a consistent change of nature. The carefully selected, highly individual routes and overnight accommodations combine luxury with stylish simplicity typical of the country. The Nürburgring Nordschleife: Ideal for M3 Circuit Training and the M5 Nürburgring “Taxi” The aficionado of high-speed driving will be simply thrilled by a unique racetrack experience on the labyrinth of the “Green Hell,” as the Nordschleife is called. This is where participants experience the BMW 330i and M3 precisely where they are fine-tuned by BMW’s engineers and suspension specialists in the development process. Apart from the theory of driving dynamics, the programme comprises Section Training making participants aware of the particular challenges of this demanding track. The highlight of this two-day course is the completion of several guided laps round the track almost 21 km or 13 miles in length, following a pace car setting the right standard. In the process the instructors ensure absolute safety: The focus is on safe driving on the ideal line, not on the fastest lap times, which are not measured, anyway. A Truly Unique “Taxi”: Experiencing Nürburgring in the BMW M5 The enthusiast wishing to experience what the 507 bhp of a BMW M5 have to offer on the Northern Circuit of Nürburgring will simply love taking his — or her — seat in what must be the world’s fastest “taxi”: The team of Nürburgring “taxi drivers” even comprises the likes of racing icon Hans-Joachim Stuck, the man who drove the race-winning BMW M3 GTR at Nürburgring on 13 June 2004. From April to November the BMW “Taxi Driver Team” will be supplemented by other experienced BMW Driver Training Instructors such as Claudia Hürtgen, the winner of the 2003 German Touring Cup, or Sabine Schmitz. We get reimbursed for some expenses though. Here’s what we do get: Sincerely, Robert Littmann 2. Reimbursement from National for printing costs (up to $110.00 per issue) associated with printing your chapter newsletter for mailing to other chapters, the National Office, the National Board and National Service Officers. The Editor replies... [Reprinted from e-mail to Mr. Littmann] Hope this helps. Sincerely, would like to know why I didn’t receive my Bimmer Immer issue for January 2005 and of today’s date the February issue? Is this newsletter published monthly or just when the editor decides to publish it? Don’t the Badger Bimmers receive monies from the BMW CCA to pay for a monthly newsletter? I would like to get an answer from you on this matter before I would contact the BMW CCA to get their position on this. Thank you for your cooperation. Robert: Thanks for your concern, and certainly thanks for caring enough to write to the Editor. Most people just write to advertise and such... 1. Reimbursement from National for postage costs incurred in sending our chapter newsletters to other chapters, the National Office, the National Board and National Service Officers. Mustafa Emir Editor, Bimmer Immer The reason you have not received your Immer for January is that there was not one. We are currently working on the February issue and hope that it will come out soon. By that, I mean the next 7 to 10 days. I am hoping that real life will not interfere too badly with this prediction: for example, if my associate editor gets a rush assignment at work or my son gets an ear infection, it’ll be too bad for the Immer for another week. Your second question is a little more tricky to answer; though we do indicate a month and year on the cover of the Immer, this is only a ruse to mislead you, the reader, into thinking that you are holding a professionally edited and produced document. Of course nothing could be farther from the truth. Our seasoned readers know that the Immer is always unpredictable yet seldom fails to inform its readers of the fun things they can be doing with their cars instead of, say, reading it... (By the way, I just made a clever pun, but you have to speak German to get it!) Anyway, no, the Immer is not a monthly publication and, no, it is not published when the Editor (i.e., me) decides to publish it. The reality is quite a bit more complicated: we try to get an Immer out every four to six weeks, and we do so as soon as our lives allow a few uninterrupted hours to work on articles, layout, pictures, etc. Appears as though we’ve done a good enough job to get you hooked on this rag and now we’re dealing with your withdrawal symptoms.... Well, we’ll continue to do our best to keep ‘em coming your way, whenever we can. But seriously, the newsletter is published about 10 times a year, more frequently in the summer than the winter. By the way, CCA recommends (dare I say “requires”) that some form of communication (I think they mean the written kind) occur every 2 months. By and large we meet that — we ain’t Boston, but we try. www.badgerbimmers.org Page 7 Holiday Party 2005 “J ohn, I would like to have a little information on the annual dinner, maybe get an article together. How about answering some questions? “1. How would you rate the venue?” The venue was great. People seemed to enjoy the Museum itself, there was plenty of room for all of the tables, and people still had room to move around. The Museum staff was just incredible. They know how to handle large parties and any unforeseen things that pop up. We needed another table for door prizes and they were able to find one and get it setup in about 10 minutes with no complaints. The audio visual equipment was there on time, it was set up properly, and it worked the way it was supposed to. They were very friendly and accommodating. I just can’t say enough about how well that part of the organization went. The room itself was really nice, too. The holiday theme with the white trees and white lights was very comforting and relaxing and definitely warmed up what could have been a very bland room. The tables of eight were small enough to still allow some good dinner conversation. Service was prompt and professional. The dessert table was a nice touch and seemed to be quite popular. “2. How many people attended?” It was somewhere around 112. Last year was about 120. We limited the number of entries this year based on the maximum Page 8 room capacity given by the Museum people. It was pretty much a capacity crowd, though we found out later that the Museum people allowed for a few contingency spots that they didn’t publicize. “3. How was the food?” The food was very good. Everybody seemed to like it no matter which of the menu selections they had. “4. Speaker?” Burt [B.S.Levy] was great. People from the Club who already knew him, of course, liked him. But, I think that even non-motorheads liked the pre- sentation. He has a way of being kind of an Everyman even though the subject is racing cars. We were talking to the guy from the Museum who set up the AV equipment after the dinner. He said that he’s not a car person but he found the presentation very interesting and entertaining. That’s probably the best account of Burt’s presence and style. Photos by Jenny Morgan www.badgerbimmers.org “5. Entertainment?” The Museum was the entertainment. For those who wanted more there was a great tape of in-car camera stuff running behind Burt at his table. “6. The raffle?” The raffle was really something. The big prizes were the Z4 pedal car from Knauz, the O’Fast entry donated by Badger Bimmers, the autographed 10th anniversary Last Open Road book from Burt Levy, and the two one-hour massages donated by The Body Awareness Center and Studio D’Angeli. We also got a ton of cool stuff from Tire Rack, Concours, International, Bob Clark, and a host of others. The list below is everybody I have on the database. double check? I don’t want to forget anybody. The door prizes were numerous and high quality. It was quite a sight. “9. In your opinion, what was the highlight of the evening?” The best part for me was having people say how much they enjoyed the event and thanking Sarah for the organizational work. I was also happy to see that people liked the door prizes. The two massages, which we added to appeal to the long suffering spouses, were a big hit. They were arguably bi the most popular items along with the pedal car.
