We had a record number of members returning to education and employment with a 25% increase in member’s total earnings. The wellness initiatives of exercise, nutrition, tobacco cessation and dual recovery have become part of our culture. The testimony of Karen and Rob found in the following pages are only a few of the many Genesis members that are finding the confidence and courage to move ahead with their lives. We were pleased to honor the Worcester Art Museum as a 25 year Genesis Employer and to award Commonwealth Medicine at UMass Medical School the Employer of the Year at the State House in Boston. We received our 7th three-year Accreditation from Clubhouse International that places Genesis Club as an Evidence Based Practice model in the U.S. We were also excited to have played a role in Clubhouse International receiving the 2014 Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Award in relieving human suffering. We completed our first year with the new Department of Mental Health Clubhouse contract and continue to make recommendations for more effective Clubhouse practices. We also attended and presented at the 1st US National Clubhouse Conference in Washington, DC. and the European Clubhouse Conference in Stirling, Scotland. Our needs in 2015 will continue to be financial stability in sustaining and developing the effective programs of training, education, employment, housing and wellness for each member that finds their way to the Genesis Club. Our vision of providing a safe and dignified place for those in recovery from mental illness remains as strong today as it was in 1988. It is the Genesis Club community of long term funders, staff, members, colleagues, foundations, employers, landlords, donors, Board of Directors and friends who indeed make this vision possible. We are so pleased that many of you are with us in our journey. Thank you, Kevin Bradley, Executive Director Tom Pier, President, Board of Directors 2 Year in Review Conrad Hilton In 2014, we were honored to be recognized in the greater health community as a leader in the mental health field. The clubhouse model, through Fountain House and Clubhouse International have been awarded the 2014 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Award. All clubhouses have been recognized as the answer to human suffering in the field of mental health. Genesis Club and all Clubhouses around the world should be congratulated for all the hard work that has been done to receive this award. The Hilton Foundation gives the award to organizations that do considerable work in the field of relieving human suffering and overcoming hardships. European Conference - Stirling, Scotland From October 12 – October 15, 2014, Director Kevin Bradley and Genesis Member Karen Christ had the opportunity to attend the 2014 European Conference of Clubhouse International, held in Stirling, Scotland. For four wonderful days we attended conferences and break-out sessions concerning the many different aspects of the clubhouse model. The speakers were knowledgeable, and all the participants in the Conference were enthusiastic. We learned a great deal, and perhaps more importantly, we established and re-established relationships with Clubhouse staff and members from all over the world. It was the perfect way to experience what “Clubhouse” means, and to witness the warmth, dedication and level of commitment of everyone involved – members, staff and Board members alike. It was gratifying, too, to realize that Genesis Club has a superb reputation throughout the world as a truly successful clubhouse and training center. We ended the Conference with a fun Gala Banquet – with singing, dancing, and a Scottish band who, of all things, performed American music! What a great and glorious world the Clubhouse system is! US Clubhouse Conference Washington,D.C. In November of 2014, Ruth Osterman lead a team of staff and members from Genesis Club who attended the 2014 US Clubhouse Conference. This was the first conference of its kind, bringing together all of the clubhouses located in the United States. Throughout the four days the Genesis Club team led workshops on Employment and Education. It was encouraging to see so many clubhouses gather for one common goal, to see individuals with major mental illness recover with the supports of their clubhouse. The hope is to work closer as one unified group to further our mission and plan for advocacy on a national level. 2014 Training Overview In 2014 we had the privilege to train over 95 colleagues from 28 Clubhouses. We had several international Clubhouses join us from Israel, England, Canada, Finland, and Norway. It is always exciting to have colleagues from different cultures and traditions. Our new guest house, the Chandler House has proved to be a great asset for our colleagues. We have noticed a more cohesive working group while here for training and the camaraderie is fantastic. 2014 Clubhouses Trained Amit Club, Israel Venture House, NY Harlem Clubhouse, NY Looking Ahead Clubhouse, ME Austin Clubhouse, TX San Antonio Clubhouse, TX Putnam Clubhouse, CA Hidden River Clubhouse, PA West Place Clubhouse, PA Welcome House Clubhouse, PA Mosaic Clubhouse, London Cornerstone Clubhouse, PA Providence House Clubhouse, PA New Horizon Clubhouse, MI Commerce Park Clubhouse, PA Capitol Clubhouse, ME Näsinkulman Klubitalo, Finland Fontenehuset Honefoss, Norway Club Fellowship, FL Crossroads – Cape Breton, Canada Opportunity Centre, PA High Hopes, ME Fontenehuset Bergen, Norway Unlimited Solutions, ME Training Guest House Partners Wyman-Gordan Foundation Saint-Gobain Foundation George and Sybil Fuller Foundation Stoddard Charitable Trust Agnes Lindsay Trust The Fletcher Foundation John Murray Nathaniel Wheeler Trust Post-Site Visits Prime Time House, CT Open Door Clubhouse, NY Community Corner Clubhouse, WI J-Town Clubhouse, MI High Hopes Clubhouse, ME Capitol Clubhouse, ME Unlimited Solutions Clubhouse, ME Fontenehuset Bergen, Norway Caledonia House, Scotland International Training 3 Karen I began to suffer from depression and other mental health issues when I was in junior high school. No one knew back then that I had a mental illness, but my parents started sending me for counseling when I was 14. Somehow I managed to do well in school despite my worsening mental health. I studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and, through their Extension Division received a five-year diploma. Although I excelled at college, because of my mental health issues I was unable to complete my Bachelor’s Degree. So I began working full-time in Boston, eventually working close to 30 years in the legal field. Throughout my working years I had several periods of disability when I was unable to work and many hospitalizations; I tried so many different medications I cannot remember them all. I was finally properly diagnosed in about the year 2000 with Bipolar I Disorder, and began trying newer medications with the doctor who correctly diagnosed me. Although my new treatment was helping somewhat, my illness still got worse. During my last three years of work in a large law firm, I had more periods of disability and more hospitalizations. Being a legal assistant with a heavy case load was stressful enough, but I also worked under an office manager who was very unkind and who appeared rather biased about my illness – I struggled under the stigma of mental illness so prevalent in society. When I was finally laid off in 2010, it was a blessing in disguise. I thought I would never be able to work again, and went on Social Security Disability. The next three years were really quite difficult, with thoughts of suicide, more hospitalizations, and depressing isolation. My sister found out about Genesis Club and suggested I check it out – I did so, with my therapist’s blessing. That was in May of 2013. My life has changed drastically as a result. I had never heard of the “clubhouse model,” but the work-ordered day I discovered at Genesis Club gave me structure, a purpose, a reason to get up in the morning and stop isolating. It was so good to be with people who were just like me, where there was understanding and no judgment. Since my last work experience had been so terrible, I was truly afraid of working again. But because I was able to “work” at Genesis during the day using skills I already had, I was encouraged to try one of the Transitional Employment jobs they offered. Knowing that I had Genesis behind me gave me the courage to try. I began my part-time job at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in January, 2014. The support I received from Genesis helped me over some difficult first adjustments and some “fragile” days. I was able to complete that assignment on September 30, 2014. And wonder of wonders, because I now had some confidence back in my ability to hold a job, I was able to independently look for and obtain my own part-time job, where I continue to work. I could never have done this without Genesis and the Transitional Employment program. I am now operating under the knowledge that while my Bipolar Disorder cannot be cured, it can be managed. Genesis Club has helped me to realize that. The Transitional Employment program helped me to work again and become a productive citizen. Now, perhaps, I will have enough confidence to complete my degree as well. “Life didn’t end for me as I was hoping it would –it has just begun.” 184 52 41 109 Employment Supports Members earned $1,543,050 with 101 employers Members worked Transitional Employment Members worked Supported Employment Members worked Independent Employment Education Supports 123 Members received educational guidance and support 64 enrolled at College or University Level 14 enrolled in GED or High School Level 14 Students Received the Sidney R. I therefore had to withdraw from college. I then stayed on the mental health unit of a local hospital for about five weeks, where they tried to figure out what was wrong with me. At the time Genesis Club staff and members came to visit and explain how the clubhouse works and what exactly it offers. Once I was released from the hospital, I got a formal referral to tour Genesis and proceed on with a three-day orientation. That was back in 2008, and I am still attending the club. I first joined the Café Unit, which maintains a snack shop and oversees general maintenance of the Club. I was trying to get back on my feet and become functional again. I found the structure of the “work-ordered” day to be very helpful in my recovery. I was then told about the Transi- tional Employment (“TE”) program at the club and, for the first time in my life, I got a job – a temporary position at Worcester State University, doing entrylevel work, such as washing dishes. This first job helped with my recovery, giving me back some confidence. I held that job for about nine months. I did extremely well in it, and I only missed two days out of the whole nine months. Once I realized I could complete something like that, I gained back enough confidence to go back and try college again. Going back to school was important to me. I started at Quinsigamond Community College, where I am still taking classes. I have changed my major a few times, so I have taken a lot of classes, mainly in English and Math. I am now finally settled in a major, Applied Arts – a field where I think I can finally make a difference. I would like to improve my skills as an artist. Sometimes I attend the Creative Arts meetings here at Genesis Club to see what other artists are creating. The Career Development Unit was a big help in getting me back on the road to school and in trying to complete my degree. They also helped me acquire some accommodations from the school, such as having more time to complete tests, and to do so in a quieter setting. I am not currently working because I am concentrating mainly on my school work. Eventually, I would like to transfer to Assumption College, where I might participate in their Graphic Design program. I have made more friends at Genesis Club than I ever thought I would have in my life. Some are younger than I am, some are older, but I have learned a lot from everyone. It feels good to know that I wasn’t all alone in the world. Well, the first step is getting out of bed. Thankfully, I have a family who can motivate me to do that. As I began to come to Genesis Club more and more, I would look forward to it. That is what got me out of my depression. I would definitely recommend Genesis Club to anyone with a mental illness. Hopefully, more and more people with a mental illness will be referred to Genesis by their health care providers and they can all get the help they need, just like I did.
