Here’s to your health.
Mission
Our mission at Carson Tahoe is to enhance the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
Values
Our core values include putting patients first and treating everyone with dignity and respect.
p2 2 0 0 9 - 2 0 1 0 R EPO R T TO THE C OMMUNITY
I am
proud to represent exceptional care for our community.
Here’s to your health.
In years past, we presented the community with an Annual Report. This year, we
have expanded our thinking to deliver what we call our “2009-2010 Report to the
Community.”
It is a change we felt the community deserved, in order to gain a better understanding
of not only the facts and figures behind our healthcare system, but also to provide you
with insight into what we do on a daily basis for the benefit of our community.
To that end, we have included several success stories within this report…stories
that inspire and motivate us to continue to provide the best possible care to every
patient…every day.
It’s this passion for what we do that has led to so many achievements and
accomplishments. Last year marked our 60th anniversary, including over 50 years of
being honored with Joint Commission accreditation.
Also in 2009, we launched our Grateful Patient program, which we call “Shining
Stars,” whose purpose is to honor those medical professionals that go above and
beyond the call of duty, and allows patients and their families the opportunity to
acknowledge superior care.
We launched a new microsite – herestoyourhealth.net – dedicated to our community’s
well-being, and loaded it with healthy tips, local activities, recipes, in-depth articles
from Carson Tahoe physicians, interactive health tools, and much more.
Other landmarks included the renewal of ADA Certification for Diabetes Education,
the creation of a new Stroke Support group, the honor of receiving the “Extra Mile”
award from Washoe County for maintaining a smoke-free campus, and the success
of performing our 500th cardiac surgery.
As a non-profit organization, we must always uphold our responsibility to keep a close
watch on our operational expenses, contributions and allocations and report them to
you. We’re happy to present this to you while also bringing you the personal stories of
hope, joy and care behind these numbers.
Sincerely,
Ed Epperson

Community Support & Education
Over 8,000 members, of our community accessed
our wellness programs in 2009.
Carson Tahoe is committed to providing the best healthcare available
to all community members, regardless of their ability to pay. We
define community benefits as: improving access to health services;
reducing geographic, financial or cultural barriers to health services;
enhancing public health; advancing general knowledge; helping train
future healthcare professionals; conducting research; maintaining
negative margin inpatient service lines to prevent gaps in service; and
supporting community organizations.
Examples of Carson Tahoe’s Outstanding
Community Service Programs
Treating patients is just one of our roles at Carson Tahoe. Beyond
the care we provide within our hospital walls, we are also strongly
dedicated to providing educational resources and wellness tips,
programs and services to the entire community.

Jeremy Fisicaro, Physical Therapist & Danny Haesaerts
Dr. Michael Song, Neurosurgeon
When Gardnerville resident Danny Haesaerts shattered his vertebrae in an
accident, he thought his life was over. Luckily, Dr. Song saw things differently.
It began like any other day. Danny and his wife Bonnie went about their
normal routine. They had just come home from grocery shopping when
Danny tripped, falling into a doorframe and breaking his neck – rendering him
paralyzed from the shoulders down. Most in his situation would have become
quadriplegic or may not have survived at all.
But then, most didn’t have the comprehensive care of Carson Tahoe to turn to.
Bonnie called 911, and they rushed him to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical
Center, where Dr. Song performed a minimally-invasive six-hour surgery that
miraculously helped Danny regain 70% of his feeling. And he’s still improving.
Here’s to your health.
Contributions to Community Health 2009
Carson Tahoe is dedicated to providing for the health and well-being of our community
through our continued commitment toward charitable care. The ability to provide
assistance to those who cannot pay for medical care is a direct result of Carson Tahoe’s
sound business decisions and careful financial planning.

Financial Stewardship
during life’s biggest moments.
In 2009 Carson Tahoe invested $6 million in capital
equipment and Information Technology infrastructure.
An additional $3 million was dedicated to expansion of
healthcare services for our community.
Despite the ongoing challenges of a struggling economy,
Carson Tahoe maintained a strong financial position, closing
the year with a positive operating margin. We also continued
to meet or exceed all bond compliance requirements,
improving our bond rating with Standard & Poors to a
stable outlook.
These accomplishments are quite impressive considering
the norm for hospitals today trends toward a negative
financial outlook.
As Carson Tahoe looks ahead, we are committed to
maintaining the fiscal responsibility necessary to continue
our role as the strong healthcare provider our community
deserves.
Cassie Chesser with her twins
Investing in Technology
Dr. Amy Sue Hayes,
Obstetrics and
Gynecology
Bringing twins into the world should be a joyful
occasion, not a stressful one. That’s why Cassie
made the decision to switch to Carson Tahoe.
Gardnerville Rancho residents, Cassie and her
husband, were expecting twin boys. While an
exciting time, decisions had to be made. Delivering
at a California hospital in Lake Tahoe, especially
during the winter, was not an option. Fearing an
icy trek up the mountain, they instead chose the
convenience of an obstetrician on staff at Carson
Tahoe – and stayed close to home.
Thanks to Carson Tahoe’s 5-star Women and
Children’s Center, private LDRP suites, and
comforting staff, their family is now larger by two.
Three if you count their partner in healthcare.
As the only accredited healthcare system serving
Carson Valley, Carson Tahoe is delivering a better
choice in OB/GYN care.
Here’s to your health.
p6 2 0 0 9 - 2 0 1 0 R EPO R T TO THE C OMMUNITY
Great healthcare never rests. At Carson Tahoe, we strive to
provide the latest technology and procedures to ensure that
our patients are receiving the best possible care.
We are proud to announce that we have recently upgraded
our ER’s information system, complete with a new 52”
monitor that displays up-to-date patient information. The wallmounted monitor is in the center of the nurses’ station and
improves visibility and emergency response time. Emergency
physicians, nurses and hospital staff communication has
improved as a result, and minute-by-minute updates on a
patient’s location and status are now prominently displayed.
New IV pumps have been installed throughout the Regional
Medical Center and are networked to a drug library to help
ensure consistency, accuracy and safety for the patient.
With the push toward Electronic Health Records (EHR),
Carson Tahoe is on the forefront of developing fully
integrated health records for every patient. EHR is vital
to future documentation within our healthcare system.
It will allow Carson Tahoe to accurately, efficiently and
confidentially document every patient encounter throughout
the patient’s lifetime, ensuring a complete and thorough
medical history. This new EHR technology will allow
physicians, patients and healthcare providers to share access
of current, comprehensive health information while adhering
to all federal privacy regulations.
Each year, Carson Tahoe invests capital to meet the growing
demands for new healthcare technology, with over $4 million
invested in technology in 2009.
Carson Tahoe on the Web
Setting a new sustainability standard
Keeping up with today’s demands for easy access to
information via the Internet, Carson Tahoe has revamped
its web site – carsontahoe.com. This online resource is
designed to recruit, inform, educate and alert our
ever-expanding community of users. In 2009, the site
had 49,821 unique visits.
Last year, we reached several goals. Facility-wide, we
eliminated nearly all of our Styrofoam usage in our cafes
and opted for compost-friendly to-go containers and paper
plates. We also changed our napkins to a recycled variety
and implemented an institutional can recycling program at
the Regional Medical Center.
In addition to our main site, Carson Tahoe maintains a
Facebook account and health blog as additional resources
for getting information out to the public. Finally, with
the development of our wellness-based microsite –
herestoyourhealth.net – we are able to offer our community
an array of tips to stay healthy and thrive all year long.
In 2010 we invited our local growers to join us in educating
patients and guests of eco-friendly practices we support.
We met with experts and began implementing strategies to
expand and improve our healing gardens and have received
support from our State Public Health agency to grow
certified organic products.
Environmentally Friendly
Helping hands. Compassionate hearts.
Being a center of wellness means creating a healthy, healing
environment. In addition to our stunning views, soothing
aesthetics, and patient comforts throughout our facilities,
we have also made tremendous efforts to “go green” in the
following ways:
The CTRH Auxiliary – a volunteer-based organization made
up of over 250 caring members of our community – has
always been a source of great strength for patients and their
families. This tight-knit and hard-working group is dedicated
to holding fundraising and service events to help improve the
level of care Carson Tahoe provides. Through such financial
support efforts as the CTRH Gift Shop and the Wave of
Love Memorial Fund, the Auxiliary has been instrumental
in bringing important projects to light, including the latest
Zimek machine for decontamination and infection control,
six flat screen TVs in pre-op, the WNC Nursing Scholarship
program, and the TLC Hospital Cart.
•• Recycling program, including newspaper, plastic
and glass
•• Low intensity light bulbs
•• Low VOC paint
•• Sustainable food procurement
By being eco-conscious we are doing our part to show we
care about our patients, our community, and our planet.
In 2009-2010, the organization helped convert pledge
dollars into hospital improvements to the tune of
$22,153.99. But for those whose lives were touched by
these efforts, that number is immeasurable.

Foundation Year in Review
Philanthropy is important at Carson Tahoe
Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Foundation achieved success in 2009 due to
the overwhelming generosity of our donors. We hope you take pride in knowing
that you have helped provide access to healthcare programs for your friends and
neighbors.
Restricted contributions represent the largest source of revenue secured by
the Foundation each year. The Cancer Center, Merriner Cottages, and Cancer
Resource Center funds received the greatest number of gifts in 2009.
In total, 794 donors supported the Foundation through 1,505 gift transactions.
We received 48 in-kind donations for our live and silent auctions and raffles.
Event revenue brought in $181,832 in income. Interest and dividend earnings,
while down from the prior year, provided just under $100,000 for Foundation
activities such as marketing and promotion of our giving programs.
In 2009 the Foundation received $170,519 in direct support from Carson Tahoe
Regional Healthcare, which underwrites Foundation operating expenses. The funds
received from Carson Tahoe, and the low overhead costs, allows 100% of donor
dollars to directly support healthcare projects and programs.

11 years in support of Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare.
2009 Foundation Development Efforts
“Calling on Angels” – In June,
we introduced the final phase of
the cancer center capital campaign
with the Calling on Angels DVD and
collateral. Gifts to the cancer center
in 2009 totaled $425,316.
“Shining Stars” – The Shining Stars
program was launched in August
2009. This program allows grateful
patients to make gifts in recognition
of the outstanding service provided by
a member of the Carson Tahoe team.
To date, 27 donors have contributed to
this program.
Donor Stewardship Activities –
Our existing donor base consists of
4,500 gracious individuals who have
contributed to the Foundation over
the past decade. In October 2009
we recongnized our top donors at the
Philanthropy Awards luncheon.

Carson Tahoe Cancer Center
The Carson Tahoe Cancer Center holds the distinction of
being one of only 1,400-plus accredited cancer programs
in the nation, and the only freestanding accredited cancer
center in Nevada. To earn accreditation from the American
College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer’s (CoC), a
facility must meet their rigorous quality
standards. Criteria set by the CoC
include: providing access to the full
scope of multidisciplinary services
required to screen, diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and support
patients with cancer and their families; provide prevention
and early detection services to the community; provide
services on site, by referral or through coordination with
other facilities or agencies; and submit data annually to the
National Cancer Data Base.
These achievements demonstrate the commitment of our
cancer program to provide the highest quality cancer care to
the communities we serve.
Cancer Care for the Entire Community
For starters, Carson Tahoe provides a Community Outreach
Nurse as part of the cancer center staff. Her role includes
participation in local and regional health fairs, availability
for church, school and service groups to provide education
regarding cancer prevention and other cancer topics, and
coordination of a “Cancer 101” program. These seminars
are hosted each month – featuring a guest speaker on
cancer-related topics – and are free to the community.
The oncology-certified nurse acts as the nursing liaison for
hospital nursing staff and provides them with current cancer
nursing education.
Another important part of the cancer program is the
Institutional Review Board (IRB). Members of this committee
review all proposed research and clinical trials conducted
by Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare. A clinical trials nurse
is available to assist medical staff and to help patients
understand the process, the informed consent, and all
aspects of participation in a clinical trial. Carson Tahoe Cancer Center 2009 Statistics

Outpatient Ambulatory Infusion Center
An outpatient AIC is housed within the cancer center.
This welcoming environment is staffed by specially
trained Registered Nurses who can administer all cancerrelated infusion therapies. Chemotherapy, blood product
transfusions, injections, antibiotics and intravenous
hydration are some of the treatments that can be given in
this outpatient setting. Since 2008 Carson Tahoe’s AIC
nurses have been certified by the Association of Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology Nurses to provide services for
pediatric cancer patients. This expansion in service is greatly
appreciated by the patients and families who often have to
travel long distances for their specialized treatments.
Tumor Registry
A Certified Tumor Registrar and a data assistant collect
data on all Carson Tahoe cancer cases. All information on
diagnosed cancer cases is submitted to the state cancer
registry, which in turn is shared with a national cancer
database. This data benefits cancer research and is the
basis for the cancer statistics, which the American Cancer
Society compiles annually. The cancer registry is responsible
for organizing and presenting weekly tumor conferences
in which newly diagnosed cancer cases are discussed by
a multidisciplinary team of physicians and other healthcare
professionals. These conferences provide a discussion forum
for deciding which treatment will provide the best possible
outcome. Merriner Cottages
Just the name brings a smile to many of our patients and
families who travel long distances for their treatments here.
These 15 beautifully furnished home-like cottages were a
generous gift from the Merriner Family Trust to the Carson
Tahoe Medical Campus. The cottages are a unique feature of
our cancer program and have positively impacted the lives of
many patients and their families.
Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center
Newly diagnosed cancer patients are encouraged to visit the
Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center. This is an awardwinning program designed to educate and empower the
cancer patient and their family with the diagnosis, treatment
decision-making and recovery. Several specific support
groups are offered, as well as a variety of programs to help
patients understand and cope with many challenges they
face. Massage therapy, yoga sessions, and Healthy Healing
classes are popular with patients and survivors alike. All
are offered free through our resource center. Patients may
receive financial assistance as well as navigation through the
local charitable organizations available. The cancer resource
center staff and volunteers are all cancer survivors who can
say to patients, “I know how you feel.” This is a powerful
statement to those facing a cancer diagnosis.
I am getting patients
back into the race
Mayor Bob Crowell wearing a marathon medal he won
following his successful cancer treatment.
.
Dr. Gary Campbell,
Radiation Oncologist
Bob Crowell has taken on quite a few challenges in his day including his
public service duties as Carson City Mayor. But when he was diagnosed with
prostate cancer after a routine check up, he was suddenly faced with a new
kind of challenge.
At first, he didn’t know where to turn. He talked to friends and family members,
and looked into cancer specialists across the entire country. Eventually, he
came to realize that the care he needed wasn’t found halfway around the
globe…it was right here in his own backyard.
Thanks to successful surgery and radiation therapy at Northern Nevada’s first
freestanding, accredited cancer center, Bob did what he does best…face the
challenge of a lifetime, and rise above it.
Carson Tahoe Cancer Center • Nationally acclaimed care • State-of-the-art
treatment • Award-winning resources

I am moving our community to
better health
Mary Jolly
– one step at a time.
Dr. Timothy King,
General Surgery
A nasty fall during a routine walk left Mary Jolly in bad shape. Luckily Carson
Tahoe had the skills and responsive care to get her back on the path to
wellness.
Normally, a brisk stroll through the neighborhood is a good thing for your
health. But when southeast Carson resident Mary Jolly accidentally tripped on
a raised portion of the sidewalk, she hit the ground so hard that she shattered
her spleen. Mary didn’t know it at first; she just thought she was feeling sore
and weak from the fall. However, when her husband Patrick noticed a change
in her demeanor – dizzy, pallid and faint – he knew something more serious
was happening.
They rushed to Carson Tahoe’s ER, where it was quickly discovered that Mary
was bleeding internally. Dr. King and the surgery staff jumped into action,
performing an emergency spleenectomy to stop the bleeding and repair the
damage.
Everything went so smoothly that Mary is back on her feet and – with the help
of Carson Tahoe – taking everything in stride.
Here’s to your health.

over the next few years.
Even with uncertainty and financial tough
times, Carson Tahoe will continue to strive
