unity. Comm 2008 ANNUAL REPORT Here’s to your health . We care about your community. Because it’s our community too. Here’s to your health . Last year proved to be a challenging one for all of us, to say the least. In the midst of a recession, state budget cuts, and some of the highest unemployment rates in the country, Carson Tahoe was able to stay the course and weather the storm. Keeping afloat during these turbulent economic times is a testament to any organization, and thanks to the skills and dedication of Carson Tahoe’s more than 1,200 healthcare professionals, we have not only maintained our standards of healthcare excellence, but we’ve actually improved upon them. Carson Tahoe continued to provide significant funding towards the overall health of our community while again focusing on promoting prevention and good health. Our contributions to community health totaled more than $30 million in 2008 for indigent and charitable care. And, through programs and partnerships like “Move it! For your health,” physician symposiums and our “Here’s to Your Health” magazine, we were able to provide valuable information encouraging our region to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, Carson Tahoe’s dedication to providing exceptional healthcare allowed us to remain in the forefront of medical innovations. Our commitment to provide superior leading-edge technology opened the door to the region’s first minimally invasive procedures in vascular surgery, cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery. And our determination to introduce new services allowed us to maintain comprehensive healthcare throughout our region. Some of our other many accomplishments this past year include receiving Nevada’s only 5-star rating by HealthGrades® for excellence in heart bypass surgery, our cancer center was honored with the 2007 Commission on Cancer New Program Outstanding Achievement Award, and we launched the only multi-county EKG in the field program, which enables ambulances in the surrounding rural areas to transmit a 12-lead image of the heart to our emergency department staff before the patient arrives, saving valuable minutes and lives. When faced with challenges, the true colors of any organization are revealed. At Carson Tahoe, we are proud of our over 240 board-certified physicians who continually advance their knowledge and training and our experienced clinical and support staff who persistently demonstrate their skill and compassion. Creating a positive, healing environment is at the heart of everything we do. Carson Tahoe is grateful to be your healthcare provider of choice and humbled to stand as an anchor for the greater Carson City region. And, with great enthusiasm, we look forward to providing exceptional comprehensive medical care with renewed optimism in the coming year. Sincerely, Ed Epperson President & CEO p2 2008 CTRH ANNUAL REPORT Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Board of Hospital Trustees Ed Epperson - CTRH president & CEO Basil E. Upton, MD Carson Tahoe Cancer Center Year in Review After achieving the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Three Year Accreditation with commendation, Carson Tahoe was notified in April 2008 that we were the recipient of a CoC New Program Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA). A facility receives the New Program OAA following the on-site evaluation by a surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement. In addition a facility must have received a compliance rating for the remaining 29 standards. These achievements recognize the commitment of our cancer program in providing high-quality cancer care. In 2008 we continued to offer a wide array of cancer services: medical oncology, radiation therapy, clinical trials, community outreach programs, an ambulatory infusion center, a cancer registry, the Merriner Cottages, and our award-winning Cancer Resource Center. Our cancer committee, comprised of dedicated physicians, nurses, administrators and others, continues to offer many of the varied supportive services to patients and family members. These services provide comfort and assurance that they are receiving the best treatment possible for cancer care. Carson Tahoe’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with reviewing all proposed research and clinical trials conducted by our institution with adherence to strict federal mandates. A clinical trials nurse is available to assist medical staff with the regulations as well as help patients understand the trial and the informed consent, which is necessary in order to participate. Our community outreach nurse participates in local and regional health fairs and is available to church, school and service groups to answer questions and provide education regarding cancer prevention and other timely cancer-related topics. She also hosts monthly “Cancer 101” programs featuring a guest speaker on cancer-specific topics. These mini-seminars are free to the general public. The Community Outreach Nurse also acts as the oncology nursing liaison for our hospital nursing staff and provides those nurses with current cancer nursing education. The specially trained oncology nurses staffing the ambulatory infusion center (AIC) provide a welcoming environment for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, blood transfusions, injection treatments, and all other cancer-related infusion therapies. In 2008 our nurses became Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses certified (APHON) in preparation for the opening of our pediatric cancer treatment program. Carson Tahoe is now fully qualified to treat pediatric cancer patients in our ambulatory infusion center, and the AIC nurses continue to provide expert oncology care to patients treated in our outpatient setting. 2008 CTRH ANNUAL REPORT p3 Carson Tahoe Cancer Center Year in Review (cont’d) Tracking all cancer cases treated in our system is the responsibility of our cancer registry. Staffed with a Certified Tumor Registrar and a data assistant, the registry collects and manages all data on our cancer cases and then submits that data to the Nevada State Cancer Registry, which shares this information with data collection systems on a national level. All this data benefits cancer research. The cancer registry is also responsible for organizing and presenting weekly tumor conferences, which are a valuable educational tool for the multi-disciplinary team of physicians and other healthcare providers who treat cancer patients. These conferences provide a forum through which these providers can discuss the best possible treatment options for their patients. One unique feature of our cancer program is the Merriner Cottages, located adjacent to the cancer center. A generous gift by the Merriner Family Trust made these cottages a reality for our community and those we serve. Comprised of 15 separate “home-away-from-home” bungalows, the Merriner Cottages are available to patients traveling long distances for cancer treatment. Beautifully furnished and containing many amenities, these cottages have had a positive impact on the lives of many cancer patients and their families. Newly diagnosed cancer patients are encouraged to visit the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center. Here they can receive information about the diagnosis as well as the support they need through all phases of their cancer journey. The resource center hosts many support groups and offers a variety of programs that benefit patients as they move from diagnosis to recovery and on to survivorship. Massage therapy and yoga classes are offered as well as Healthy Healing, taught by a personal trainer to those who have completed treatment. Each participant has their program tailored to his/her specific needs. One-on-one classes addressing Chemo Brain, Nutrition While on Cancer Treatment, and Care Giving are offered as well. The cancer resource center can provide financial assistance through local charitable organizations and offer help in navigating the complex issues often encountered when one is diagnosed with cancer. The future of cancer care is exciting with new technologies and treatments being developed at a rapid rate. More than ever, we can offer new hope to those diagnosed with cancer. At the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center we are dedicated to providing the best quality cancer care in a setting where natural light and nature combine to create an atmosphere of peaceful healing. These gifts assist in the fulfillment of Carson Tahoe’s commitment to heal, comfort and care for the people of our community by providing advanced and compassionate healthcare of superior quality. For the Foundation, 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of providing charitable giving opportunities to our community. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, since 1998, the Foundation has raised $7,575,166. In 2008, the Foundation focused its development efforts on four key activities: 1. To steward our existing donor base of 4,000 gracious individuals, families, organizations, businesses and foundations who have contributed to the CTRH Foundation over our 10-year history 2. To continue capital campaign fundraising by securing gifts for the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center 3. To raise funds through major gifts and grants to support new Carson Tahoe programs and projects such as the “EKG in the Field” initiative 4. Foundation Achievements Charitable contributions from Friends of the Foundation allow the Foundation to fund and support traditional healthcare programs and services. Because of resources secured from our donors, last year were able to: • Expand cancer, nursing and emergency department programs • Offset ongoing operating costs of the Merriner Cottages • Purchase equipment not included in the hospital budget • Provide professional development for clinical staff • Care for the truly indigent in our community • Produce wellness, prevention and education programs p6 2008 CTRH ANNUAL REPORT 2008 Giving We wish to thank the hundreds of Carson Tahoe Friends and Employees who supported the Foundation in 2008 through donations and participation in our special events. We define community benefits as: improving access to health services; reducing geographic, financial or cultural barriers to health services; enhancing public health; advancing general knowledge; helping train future healthcare professionals; conducting research; maintaining negative margin inpatient service lines to prevent gaps in service; and supporting community organizations. Programs that support this include: • Diabetes Education • Physician Referral Line • Asthma Screening • Merriner Cottages • Symposiums and Physician Lectures • Cancer Resource Center • Community HealthCheck • Education Assistance through scholarships and nursing and technician preceptorships • Flu Shots • Here’s to Your Health - Community Magazine • Mom’s Clinic • Think Pink • Mental Health Screenings • Charitable Care • Sports Physicals • Nurse Triage Line Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Contributions to Community Health Uncompensated Care Community Support Total Contributions $31,362,063 $1,978,071 $33,340,134 Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Financial Stewardship Carson Tahoe recorded a loss from operations in 2008. The declining economic environment of 2008 affected all sectors of the economy including hospitals. Nationwide, the impact of this failing economy resulted in foreclosures, businesses closing, and rising unemployment. At the same time, hospitals were also plagued by a rise in uncompensated care, which reached unprecedented levels. As a result, Carson Tahoe experienced a surge of uninsured patients whose illnesses were more severe than had previously been the case. Despite the losses experienced in 2008, the hospital remains in a strong financial position and continues to meet or exceed all bond compliance requirements. This result is due, in large part, to the early retirement of debt, cost containment efforts, conservative investment strategies, and a healthy balance sheet. Also in 2008, Carson Tahoe invested $5 million in capital equipment and information technology infrastructure and an additional $3 million for expansion of healthcare services for our community. At Carson Tahoe we are committed to continued responsible fiscal management to ensure our ability to deliver high-tech, high quality healthcare in a nurturing environment. p10 2008 CTRH ANNUAL REPORT The Year Ahead As Carson Tahoe celebrates our 60th anniversary in 2009, it’s n atural to reflect on the past and what has brought us to where we are today. We’re proud to look back on the history that has shaped us, but we’re even more proud to be building a legacy of quality care that will continue for generations to come. That legacy includes new services, new innovations and new additions to our team. For starters, we will be enhancing the new Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Physician Clinics, which allows skilled physicians to practice medicine in the community and provide quality care to local residents. The Physician Clinics offer internal medicine, family practice, endocrinology and pediatric services, with plans to include a variety of specialists. Beyond that, we are increasing our level of transparency related to finance, pricing, quality and charity care. In this time of economic crisis, candor inspires confidence. That’s why, as a non-profit organization, it is vital that we remain open to our corporate members, staff, supporters and the community at large regarding our operations and healthcare practices. Like any good doctor-patient relationship, communication, openness and trust are keys to success for our healthcare system. As we move forward in these trying times, our pledge is to maintain accountability for all our actions, including the implementation of proper procedures and policies to ensure we are on the right track every step of the way. Taking this initiative translates to our best efforts – every hour, every day. Looking To The Future — Foundation The goal of becoming the Best Healthcare System in Northern Nevada requires community support for new facilities, state-of-the-art equipment, and medical programs. Philanthropy helps Carson Tahoe continue to deliver quality healthcare 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While hospital fees-for-services contribute to the overall cost of caring for patients, today, additional support is essential and requires that the Foundation seek financial assistance from a variety of sources. Planning for tomorrow, the Foundation will continue to raise money and achieve fund development goals through the following: Grateful Patient “Shining Stars” Program – This program provides an opportunity for patients and family members to show their gratitude to staff members by expressing their appreciation or making a donation to the Foundation in a caregiver’s honor. “Calling on Angels” Campaign – This campaign reaches out to donors in an effort to raise $4 million toward the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. Streamlining special events for increased net revenue – Event revenue assists the Foundation in meeting our commitment to Carson Tahoe. Scaling back on event expenses allows maxi mum funds to be raised. Donor-focused planned giving– Planned gifts received by the Foundation allow us to continue to deliver superior patient care in perpetuity. 2008 CTRH ANNUAL REPORT p11 Non-profit org.
