A C ugusta urtis ultural enter A Special Place for a Special Auction The Augusta Auction 2012 Saturday, November 10, 2012 Auction 7:30pm 175 East Main Street, Meriden, CT 203-639-2856 www.curtisculturalcenter.org Program made posssible by Prentis Printing Solutions, Inc. How to Participate in the Auction All participants must register and receive a bidding number. It is a quick procedure to record your name and contact information. You are then assigned a number on a bidding panel. When Ryan Brechlin, of Nest Egg Auctions, introduces an item you are interested in, simply raise your paddle at the amounts you are willing to pay for it. If you win an item, the transaction is instantly recorded in the computer system under your bidding number. The cashier can then call up your number in the system at any time thereafter, so you may pay and leave at any time and receive a printed receipt. [NOTE: At a regular auction you would be expected to pay a Buyer’s Premium, usually 10% added to the price when the hammer came down. Nest Egg Auctions has waived all fees and premiums for us, so you are saving 10% of what you would pay elsewhere.] What Are Pre-Bids? If you are unable to attend the auction you may register with The ACCC before hand (203-639-2856) and leave pre-bids for any items in the catalog which catch your fancy. When you leave a pre-bid, you should register the highest amount you are willing to pay. If someone present at the auction, or another registered pre-bidder, bids a higher amount than you have registered for that particular item, you will not win it. However, if other bidders drop out it is possible you will win that item for less than your highest pre-bid. Bidding by Phone You may participate in the live bidding for auction items by telephone. Simply pre-register with us and we will arrange it. Payment All items should be paid for at the time of sale. We accept cash, of course, personal checks and/or Visa and Mastercard. Thank you for participating! November 10, 2012 Augusta Curtis Cultural Center Annual Benefit Auction Augusta Auction 2012 The Rules of Engagement 1 In 1901 Augusta Munson Curtis offered to build Meriden a public library with one stipulation: the City had to allocate at least $3,000 a year to run it. The City accepted her offer and Mrs. Curtis commissioned architect Richard Williams to design the building in a Greek classical revival style and engaged the H. Wales Lines Co. to build it. In 1903 The Curtis Memorial Library opened its doors to the public and for the next 70 years faithfully served residents and immigrants alike. ing process of saving as much of the original building as possible. They were also able to add an elevator, which has allowed handicapped people to reach the Rotunda on the top floor for the first time. The building was leased to The Augusta Curtis Cultural Center, Inc, a non-profit 501C3 which sprang from the original resident commission, and the building was reopened in the fall of 2001 as flexible exhibition space to promote the cultural interests of the area. By the early 1970s the role of the public library had become so critical to education in Meriden that a new facility, some 20 times larger (!), had to be built on Miller Street. From 1976 to 1978 the old Curtis Library was partially renovated (with the addition of a handicapped ramp to the main floor) and until 1996, the Meriden Heritage & Culture Commission organized limited art, music, cultural events and occasional public meetings. While the building was still habitable it served as a home to the Meriden Hall of Fame and The Ponselle Society, but was shut down in 1997 due to disrepair. Each year the Center must raise over $80,000 to keep the doors open. We do this through grant writing, building rentals, annual appeal, donations, memberships legacies, and major fund raising events like the auction. Funds from the Auction and other fundraising events, help the center to provide varied arts and cultural programs and events. The Center added mini camps this past Summer including cake decorating, floral design, and photography. Art camps are few and far between and the ACCC is proud to be able to offer 2 months worth of artistic camps, programs, and workshops in July & August. A commission was created of 28 volunteer residents to explore the possible uses of the old library if the City chose to save it. In 1998 the Meriden City Council unanimously approved a plan to begin renovation and restoration. From 2000 to 2001, with great care and skill, architect Richard Brown, SRC Construction and the Building Committee (please see lobby plaque), took on the pains-tak- All in all, The ACCC is a remarkable story about a remarkable city where, in this building, Meriden has for over a century strived for the highest common denominator to unite its citizens. Some people even call The Augusta Curtis Cultural Center, “Meriden’s Living Room.” Indeed, it is the place where people of all ages, colors and creeds put their best foot forward to the world.
