Hancock police arrest a pair wanted for multiple crimes
Michael Munroe, 32, wanted in a
Seabrook bank robbery and three carjackings, was arrested Saturday in Hancock.
Hancock Police reported that Officer
Frank Shea spotted Monroe acting suspiciously after a car was reported stolen
on Brimstone Corner Road and tried to
arrest him.
Hancock Fire Chief Nevan Cassidy saw
Munroe sucker punch Shea and try to get
away in his cruiser, as he and Shea then
chased after him. Assistant Fire Chief
Tom Bates was also standing by.
Bates and bystander Ben Billings said
they jumped in to help subdue Munroe
and pull him from the cruiser. Munroe
was taken into custody, and he is being
held at the Hillsborough County House
of Corrections. While officers arrested
Monroe they say his girlfriend, Rebecca
Norton, 29, also of Raymond, went into
Hancock Market and tried to call a cab.
She was also arrested on warrants
for drug possession charges in Methuen,
Massachusetts, and a parole violation
in Raymond. Multiple agencies in New
Hampshire and Massachusetts were
searching for Munroe after he allegedly
committed a spree of carjackings, robberies and other crimes while out on parole.

Mt Sunapee Ski area expansion gains approval
The Executive Council has voted to approve a major expansion
of the Mount Sunapee ski area. The council on Wednesday voted 3-1,
with Councilor Colin Van Ostern, D-Concord, opposed. Councilor
Chris Sununu, R-Newfields, as chief executive officer of Waterville
Valley Resort, recused himself from the vote.
The Friends of Mount Sunapee and the New Hampshire chapter
of the Sierra Club, two groups critical of the expansion, said they may
challenge it in court.
Van Ostern said any development of public lands deserved a high
level of scrutiny and standard. “The proposal in front of us would
skew that balance that we’ve struck in New Hampshire by doing
more to enable private gain than to ensure public access,” he said.
The proposed expansion would create four new trails on roughly
56 acres in an area of the mountain being called “West Bowl.” The
approval includes a 10-year option for Mount Sunapee Resort operators, through June 30, 2028. The project cost is an estimated $12
million to $15 million, according to Jay Gamble, vice president and
general manager of Mount Sunapee Resort.
Councilor David Wheeler, R-Milford, recalled how, as a former
state senator, he voted to recommend the Mount Sunapee ski area
be leased to a private operator almost 20 years ago. He said it was
the right decision then, and the right path with the current proposed
lease and expansion.
Councilor Joe Kenney said the boards of selectmen in Newbury,
Goshen and Bradford supported the expansion. He added that the
opponents, through voicing their concerns, helped make the lease
arrangement stronger.
Frank MacConnell, owner of Bob Skinner’s Ski & Sport Shop in
Newbury near the entrance to Mount Sunapee, applauded the council vote. He is with Citizens for Mount Sunapee’s Future, a group that
has supported the expansion. “It just means that we’re going to have
the opportunity of having some slow and steady growth,” he said.
“Nothing’s going to happen overnight.”
“What the lease agreement really reflects is a balance between
recreation and preserving our natural beauty and natural resources,
but also recognizing the importance of Mount Sunapee, not only as
an economic driver in this state, in our travel and tourism industry,
but also a really important component to funding our state park
system,” Hassan said after the vote.

Henniker Rotary Club President Ruth Zax, Henniker Rotarian Steve Neuhoff
and Louise Carignan (wife of Rotarian Ed Carignan) were three of a half
dozen people who spent last Saturday morning repacking fabric to be
sent to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. A call to action
was sent out to the quilting communities and they responded by donating close to 3 tons of fabric, notions and even sewing machines. A special
thank you goes to Quilted Threads of Henniker for their participation. Another call went out to transport it all from Henniker, and a Brattleboro,
Vt. moving company stepped up and is going to make sure that it's all
delivered. Not pictured were Lisa Hustis, Ed Carignan, and Dan DaCosta.

Council confirms Jerry Little as NH Banking Commissioner
The New
Hampshire
Executive Council
voted 3-2 on
Wednesday to
confirm state
Sen. Jerry Little,
R-Weare, as the
next commissioner of the state
Banking Department.
Little’s term is to begin June 2, and
it extends to Jan. 1, 2019, at a salary of
$101,789.48.
Colin Van Ostern of Concord and Chris
Pappas of Manchester, the two Democrats
on the five-member council, said they opposed Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan’s
choice of Little based on his past work as
a lobbyist for the banking industry in New
Hampshire.
Councilors Joe Kenney, David Wheeler,
and Chris Sununu, all Republicans, voted
to confirm Little. After he was nominated,
Little said he would never again return to the
banking sector.
Scott Dias (center) has his wallet open along with the other very supportive Henniker voters to help the 7th grade students raise money for their trip to DC, during
the recent Henniker Town Meeting. The students raised just over $500, with $100 of
the total coming from one very generous Henniker student supporter.
