PTSA RESTAURANT SPIRIT NIGHTS
Patty Fry
2015-2016 PTSA OFFICERS
December Spirit Night was a last minute change
due to the closing of Park Square Pizza. We were
very saddened to see one of our long time local
restaurants close its doors. Park Square Pizza has
been a great supporter to Randall as well as the
local schools. We will miss them greatly!

January. The PTSA earned $100 from that so
THANKS to all the families who supported us.
Take a night out from cooking and support Randall
and its PTSA. Mark you calendars for the next

COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Melissa Miller, 6th Grade Counselor
Here is the important information for you to be aware of in January:
1.
Please be sure you’re regularly checking
both the student’s Edsby account as well as
the parent’s account because there is
different information on each of them.
Keep in touch with teachers via email in
order to ensure your children are doing
well. More information can be found at
mySPOT at myspot.sdhc.k12.fl.us
6. Randall is following the “FISH” philosophy
again this school year which stands for: 1.
Have fun. 2. Play. 3. Be there. 4. Choose
your attitude. For the “fun” part, students
can earn snow cones monthly when they
show good behavior, and they will be given
out on 1/29. Hopefully everyone will earn
one by the end of the school year!
2. Ms. Miller and Ms. Roberts, 7th grade
counselor, will be going around to all 6th
and 7th grade social studies classes 1/5
through 1/8 in order to discuss elective
options for next school year. Students will
bring home their course selection sheets for
parent signatures, and a PowerPoint will be
posted on our website. These sheets are
due to their social studies by 1/15.
7. You can keep up on the happenings at
Randall through parent links that are sent
out at least weekly by Ms. Mawhinney, the
principal, but you need to have an email
address in our computer system. You can
also get lots of information through this
newsletter and through Edsby and through
our school’s website at randall.mysdhc.org
and on our new electronic marquee in the
front of the school.
3. 8th graders will receive their programming
sheets for high school classes in their
history classes on 1/4, and they will be due
on 1/8. Students who are taking civics will
receive their sheets too. Ms. Richards, 8th
grade counselor, is coordinating this so
contact her if you have any questions. A
parent workshop for incoming 9th graders
will be held at Newsome during the evening
of 1/12. More information will be coming
home on a flyer and in a parent link.
4. Review week will be held 1/4 through 1/8
to prepare for semester exams which will
then be held 1/11 through 1/14 with a
make-up day on 1/15.
Please be sure
students attend for all of these important
days since semester exams are worth 15%
of 6th grade 2nd quarter grades, and 20% of
7th grade 2nd quarter grades, and 25% of 8th
grade 2nd quarter grades.
5. There is no school on 1/18 and 1/19 and
then the 3rd quarter begins Wednesday
1/20. Enjoy your time off after working hard
on semester exams!
8. Ms. Miller is the 6th grade counselor and
can
be
reached
at
[email protected] or at
740-3900 x255. Ms. Roberts is the 7th
grade counselor and can be reached at
[email protected] or at
740-3900 x233. Ms. Richards is the 8th
grade counselor and can be reached at
[email protected] or at
740-3900 x231.
Email is probably the
easiest way to reach the counselors since
they are in and out of their offices
frequently. In the guidance office we also
have Ms. McKenna who is the Student
Success Coach and she can be reached at
[email protected] or at
740-3900 x235. Also, there is Ms. Horner,
the Reading Coach, and she can be
reached at [email protected] or at
740-3900 x234. We’re all here to help
students succeed in any way we can!

RAYS COUNCIL AND DRUM MAGIC
Kristy Verdi
R.A.Y.S. Council is sponsoring A Day
of Service in honor of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. on Friday, January
15, 2016, the last day of first quarter.
It is a make-up day for exams.
Many service events are scheduled
on and off campus based on student
feedback during the ServiceLearning Challenge week in
November. 6th grade students have
been invited to participate in air
potato vine removal at a local park
and a small group of 8th graders will
also be cleaning up the mangroves at McKay Bay. Many teachers will
offer students the chance to do service while in the classroom. WE
NEED PARENT volunteers who can help with projects!
We are
specifically looking for help with releveling, repainting, and replacing
tiles on our Sundance Garden patio as well as helping students
assemble bat house kits!
If you are available, please contact
[email protected]
The 8th Grade Social
Studies Teachers welcomed
Ms. Jana Broder with her
Drum Magic on Monday,
December 14th. Amazing
fun having 80+ students
drumming together!

The Randall Middle School S.T.E.M. Club has had quite a successful Fall Semester.
Sponsoring the annual Great-American Teach-In, the S.T.E.M. Club hosted guest speakers from
a wide variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.) careers and beyond.
The S.T.E.M. Club also held weekly meetings on Mondays for its members to experience a wide
variety of S.T.E.M. related learning sessions. Many S.T.E.M. Club members participated in the

an individual trophy! The Algebra Math Bowl Team also did well—taking 2nd place overall. The
Robotics Teams are in full swing and gearing up for their qualifying tournament on January 9,
2016. Our team for Science Olympiad has also been busy preparing for their competition on

Randall Middle School’s Future Business Leaders of America, (FBLA),
recently attended the FBLA District 9 Leadership Conference on
December 17th. FBLA students have been studying, preparing and for
some, creating their entry since October. Please congratulate our
students that won in their competitive event.
Randall also won Middle School FBLA Chapter of the Year, by earning
the most points for participating in community service activities,
increasing membership, submitting articles to the National FBLA
publication - to name a few.
“This was my second time at the District Leadership Conference. I was
thrilled over my team’s 1st Place win in PowerPoint! It was a great
feeling to know that all of our hard work paid off”, Samantha Simpson Vice President of Community Service.
Our District 9 winners are now excited to compete in the Florida FBLA

BEST BUDDIES
Aimee Eftink
I have 2 shout outs spotlighting 2 of
our students.
Abby Gerding, a 7th grade student
and secretary of Best Buddies,
recently spent the day at Busch
gardens with her family and
grandfather who recently had hip
s u r g e r y. H e r g r a n d f a t h e r w a s
provided with a handicap tag to be
used until his recovery process was
complete. Upon arrival, Abby noticed
that the stroller and preferred parking
were placed before the handicapped
parking. This didn't sit well with Abby,
as her buddy last year was in a wheelchair, and she has become well
aware of the challenges that citizens with disabilities face. Abby took it
upon herself to contact Busch Gardens, and she expressed her
concerns. She was contacted by Busch Gardens, and her email has
made it's way to the CEO. It is not yet known if the handicapped section
is going moved to a more practical area, but if it is, we have Abby
Gerding to thank!
Sarah Grace Kennedy is a 2 year president of Best Buddies and
passionate about everything that she does. She has served on the
board and has been a keynote speaker for relay for life. Sarah Grace
recently independently had a fund raiser selling bracelets for the Best
Buddies club. She raised over $100 to be used for activities. Best
Buddies thanks you Sarah Grace!
