franchise on July 8, 1933, at a cost of $2,500 and named
his team the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1941, he renamed his
team to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1942 Mr. Rooney’s
Steelers turned in their first-ever winning record with
a 7-4 season. That year they drafted running back Bill
Dudley in the first round, and the rookie runner led the
NFL with 696 rushing yards. Hard times returned to
the Steelers when Dudley joined the armed forces the
next year. During World War II, Mr. Rooney merged his
team with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943 (PHIL-PITTS)
and in 1944 with the Chicago Cardinals (CARD-PITTS).
In 1946, Mr. Rooney hired legendary Coach Jock
Sutherland. Bill Dudley returned to the Steelers and
again was the NFL’s rushing champion, but this time he
was also the league leader in interceptions and punt
returns and was named the league’s most valuable
player. The next season the Steelers, under Sutherland’s
