the Indiana Association of School Principals, Department of Student Programs. Whether participating
in an IASP sponsored student leadership or legislative activity, cheerleading program or an academic

Elementary Science Bowl
The IASP Science Bowl contest is entering its 11th year. As so many school are looking for ways to
encourage scientific learning, we think the Science Bowl is a fantastic way to engage your students.
We’d like to share some information about this program for 4th – 6th graders. Many schools are
already enjoying the flexibility of participating in this online contest and the hands-on experience of
performing a science experiment. The registration deadline was November 4, but if you would
still like to have a team in this year’s competition, please email Kyle ([email protected]) or
Diane ([email protected]) immediately.
How Science Bowl is SIMILAR to other IASP Competitions:
- Study Guide and Standards Based
- Topics Rotate Annually
- Team Oriented Scoring
- Awards Presented in 5 enrollment classifications
How Science Bowl is DIFFERENT than other IASP Competitions:
- Contest Participation Is Entirely Online: Blackboard technology is used for both practice questions
and contest rounds.
- Three Different Rounds: Team Round answering multiple choice questions as a group, Experiment
Round answering questions regarding a common experiment conducted before the contest day,
and an Individual Round where 4 students independently answer questions.
- Three Day Testing Window: The three tests (30 minute maximum each) can be taken at any time, in
any order, on any of the three competition days (January 26, 27, & 28, 2016).
- In order to allow your building computer experts to be on hand, teams MAY choose to complete
rounds during the school day if they wish.
- Very Few Restrictions On Size of Team: Teams must have a minimum of 4 students on their team,
but there is NO maximum number of students you are allowed to involve. This allows for a large
number of students to be involved, especially in the experiment, thereby building an even greater
knowledge base for this phase of the competition. A sample of the experiments used for the Sci
ence Bowl contest the past 5 years is available online at www.iasp.org/pdf/ScienceBowlEx
perimentExamples.pdf
Additional information is available online by reading the Science Bowl Coaches Handbook www.iasp.
org/pdf/coachhandbookscience.pdf, or by browsing the Science Bowl web page www.iasp.org/dsp/
academic/science/.
2016 Study Guide Information and Experiment Guidelines were announced during the Science
Coach Webinar on November 10 (and posted online after that day). To enter the contest, just check the box on your Membership-Participation Form www.iasp.org/pdf/
dspmembershipform.pdf, or contact our office if you’ve already submitted a form and would like to
add a Science Bowl team.
