On the Field Management of Sports Injuries About the Speakers: Hayley Queller, MD Dr. Queller completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics at Franklin & Marshall College where she was valedictorian of her class, as well as a first team Academic All-American soccer player. She earned her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine after which she completed a dual residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the Christiana Care Health System in Delaware. She continued her training at Christiana Care by completing a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine. Dr. Queller serves as the co-medical director of the ThinkSmart! Concussion Management Program. Mark Harary, MD Dr. Harary specializes in the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal problems in both pediatric and adult patients. He has a special interest in treating osteoarthritis, fractures, acute injuries and concussions. Dr. Harary attended medical school at Ross Unviersity. After obtaining his medical degree, Dr. Harary completed a family medicine residency at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh and a fellowship training in Sports Medicine at Blessing Hospital in Illinois. Dr. Harary is board certified in Sports Medicine and Family Medicine and is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He serves as the team physician for the Miller Place High School football team. Luga Podesta, MD Dr. Podesta is a nationally recognized sports medicine physician specializing in the non-surgical treatment of orthopedic, musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee, and spine. He is considered a pioneer in the new field of regenerative medicine, an area of medicine utilizing the body’s natural ability to heal damaged tissue. Dr. Podesta serves as co-director of the Sports Medicine Program at St. Charles Hospital. He is a consultant to the Major League Baseball Umpires and World Baseball Classic and a sports performance consultant to Cirque Du Soleil-Iris. Past consultant roles included the Los Angeles Lakers, the University of Southern California Football team and as a training camp consultant to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints. Dr. Podesta earned his Medical Degree from Autonomous University of Guadalajara and New York Medical College. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at St. Vincent’s Medical Center of NYC and his Sports Medicine fellowships at Staten Island Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center and at the world renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California. He is board certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. Danielle DeGiorgio, DO Dr. DeGiorgio attended Stony Brook University on a full athletic scholarship and served as captain of the women’s basketball team. She obtained her medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and performed an internship at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, followed by a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Dr. DeGiorgio also completed training in structural acupuncture at Harvard Medical School and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Christiana Care. She served as a team physician for the University of Delaware and Delaware State University. Dr. DeGiorgio is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine and is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Mchael Sileo, MD Dr. Sileo graduated from the College of William and Mary and earned his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Stony Brook and serves as co-director of the Sports Medicine Program at St. Charles Hospital. His post-graduate training included a surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency at SUNY Stony Brook. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and served as assistant team orthopedist to the New York Jets, New York Islanders, Hofstra University, and Hunter University. Dr. Sileo is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He specializes in the arthroscopic and minimally invasive treatment of shoulder, hip, knee, elbow and ankle injuries and is one of the few orthopedic surgeons in the tri-state area who performs hip arthroscopy for the minimally invasive treatment of hip labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement. On the Field Management of Sports Injuries Gregg Jarit, MD Dr. Jarit is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the orthopedic care of athletes at all levels. He performs general orthopedic surgical and nonsurgical fracture care and has particular interest in the care of acute and chronic sports-related injuries, including conservative, arthroscopic, and minimally invasive surgical treatment. Dr. Jarit has experience with the latest techniques in facilitating early return to play while maximizing the function and safety of the athlete. He recently received an additional subspecialty certification in orthopedic sports medicine. He obtained his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Virginia and recently obtained an additional subspecialty certification in orthopedic sports medicine. Kaan Celebi, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, CSCS, FMT Kaan Celebi holds a doctorate degree from Touro College with post-graduate training including a sports medicine residency at the University of Delware, an intensive training program in sports injury prevention and rehabilitation. He is dual board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in sports (SCS) and orthopedics (OCS). In addition, Kaan is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) as well as a certified Functional Myofascial Taping Specialist (FMT). Kaan cares for both the competitive and recreational athlete and specializes in the prevention and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and post-operative care with special consideration to the hip, knee, ankle and shoulder. Dana Cavalea, CSCS Dana Cavalea is the founder of ML Strength and the former director of Strength and Conditioning for the New York Yankees. Cavalea spent 12 years in the Yankees Organization, winning a World Championship in 2009. That same year, he was awarded the MLB Nolan Ryan Award, which is presented to the top strength and conditioning coach in major league baseball, as voted by his peers. Dana is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a degree in Exercise Science. In addition to the Yankees, he has spent time with the Toronto Bluejays and Pittsburgh Pirates. He currently works as a consultant to professional athletes, celebrities, and corporate executives. It is important that the athletic trainer can perform an appropriate evaluation, gathering the necessary clinical information for decision making for immediate management, continued play and need for emergent care, physician follow up and treatment. 9:45am - 10:30am Breakout lab session: Evaluation of the lumbar spine and hip 10:30am – 11:00pm Lower extremity soft tissue injuries Hayley Queller, MD In addition, injury on the field may often require splinting for the protection of the athlete and to prevent further injury until the athlete is able to be evaluated and treated by a physician. They will understand the importance of ACL prevention as well as how to implement ACL prevention programs for the teams they serve.
