Torqued-Up,
Not Torqued-Off!
Chapter President
Greetings, Delaware Valley Chapter Members!
As the newly elected (for 2016) Chapter President,
it would seem appropriate for me to take a moment
to address our membership as we embark on the
2016 Season in a time of transition for BMW and
the club devoted to these vehicles.
Frankly, I’m not all that keen on important sounding
titles or leadership positions. My becoming
Delaware Valley Chapter President is more the
result of the encouragement of my mentors on the
board, past and present. I’d particularly like to thank
Martin Bullen and Dave Wollman for their examples
of leadership over the past 8 years. Candidly, I have
no plan to tip over the proverbial canoe.
For the past few years as Vice President I have been
working behind the scenes to recruit new volunteers
for various chapter roles (Newsletter, Social Chair,
regional volunteers, Webmaster). Now that I am no
longer the official “chapter whipper-snapper”, I see
the need to secure the future of the chapter with
some fresh perspective and some optimism in the
face of change.
Our Mr. Bullen especially finds himself driven
away from newer BMW vehicles, feeling that our
automaker of choice has compromised the purity of
the vehicles in favor of mass appeal and ever more
Dave Flogaus
fragmented market segments. It is clear BMW is a
brand in transition. There is plenty of discomfort
amongst traditional BMW enthusiasts over this
process. I know many “former faithful” who have
literally left the brand, disheartened that “the geeks
have taken over” with awkward looking hybrids,
front wheel drive, and 3 and 5 sedans that are more
Camry than “Ultimate Driving Machine”.
I’ve said it before: “there is nothing more dangerous
than a room full of enthusiasts.” I do not disagree
that BMW has made some moves that remind me of
“The New Coke.” (Hey dummy, there was nothing
wrong with the old Coke!) On the other hand, the
BMW X5 was once a sacrilege to me, and now I
hold the first two generations in very high esteem.
Life always teaches us that we need to be tolerant
and adapt to change.
At the time I am writing this, I am optimistically
voting once more (in favor) with my wallet. I am
over the Atlantic Ocean on a plane to take Munich
delivery of the latest (F80) M3 sedan. While the
purists insist that an M3 with turbochargers is an
unwarranted distortion of the “sacred formula,” I
choose to think of it in the terms that this is what
BMW has to do to make a competitive car in the
category under the prevailing market conditions.
For as long as the Delaware Valley Chapter will
tolerate me, I’ll commit to calling matters BMW and
BMW club as I see them. Personally, I’m looking
forward to an M3 that keeps me (turbo) torqued-up,
rather than torqued-off. For those of you who have
patiently awaited the new M2, I’ll be anxious to
hear from you to see if the car lives up to the press
and once again takes the title of the “Ultimate (right
sized) Driving Machine”.
From the fatherland, this is your correspondent
Dave Flogaus reporting. Auf wiedersehen!

Winter karting night
February 18, 2016
speed raceway, horsham, pa
Speed Raceway (Horsham, PA) hosted
our most recent karting event on
February 18th. The event filled up, with
over thirty racers in attendance. After a
tasty feast of hoagies, chips and soda,
the races kicked off with the usual dose
of witty banter and trash talk.
The racing all night was fast and
competitive, with seasoned club
racers and newer (but talented!)
drivers swapping the top places on the
leaderboard all night. DelVal again
showed the level of driving talent within
the club by claiming 11 of the top 12

“times of the week” by the end of the
final session, including all 5 of the top
spots.
With the racing close and quick
throughout the evening, everyone in
attendance left with a smile on their
face! If you’ve not made it out to one
of our karting events, I emplore you to
keep an eye out in this space and on the
club Facebook page for future events.
Whether you’re an experienced track rat,
or a green-as-can-be beginner, everyone
should experience the competitive thrill
of kart racing with fellow enthusiasts.
Annual Banquet
February 6, 2016
Talamore country club, ambler, pa
On February 6, 2016, the Talamore Country
Club (Ambler, PA) again hosted our chapter’s
annual banquet. More than one hundred
attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour with passed
hors d’oeuvres before finding seats at the large
round tables that filled the well-appointed
dining room. Dinner featured hearty winter
entrees and sides, and the dessert offerings all

Today is going to be stupendous and I know
this is the case because after freezing to death
for months and having to dig myself out of my
driveway THROUGH a snow bank that was
actually taller than my body (editor’s note: that’s
not very tall…), the sun is now shining. And the
birds are chirping and I have an incredible desire
to throw open all of the windows and blare The
Allman Brothers until my neighborhood shakes
and the police are called. And all the salt is
gone from the roads, so I shall leave my vibrating
house in my roadster and we will have the most
magnificent adventures.
Ah, yes, I will get in, turn the actual key that
goes into an actual ignition, with my feet on the
correct number of pedals, start the engine, hear
its happy little growl, open the roof and smell
the sweet smell of…ACHOO…snort, snif…
ACHOOOOO, ACHOOOO, ACHOOOO
((TWWWOOOOOEEEEETTTT))…snif…sprig.
Id bill be ad thad bery momend thad I rebember
eggsaclty bhy I hade stoobid sprig.
And then I will feel bitter because the planet
hates me and is trying to keep me from feeling
the best sort of joy there is and I will run to the
pharmacy for comfort. Where I will remember
that all of the non-drowsy chemical marvels on
the shelf are really completely useless when
you are me and I will turn to the one thing
that consistently works every time. Benadryl.
Yeaaaaahhhhh, you know, the one that states
“Do not operate heavy machinery”, right
there on the box. Which presents an intense
dilemma…fall asleep at the wheel, have slower
reaction times or crash into a tree because I was
busy sneezing and couldn’t see.
Since the fact that the planet hates me is not
a new phenomenon, I have learned to deal
with this by taking enough to build up a bit of
tolerance to the side effects. What I usually end
up with is an odd relaxed feeling that brings a
new ability to pick up on details that I might
have otherwise missed…like french fries.
9
I deal with this by driving faster to get away from the
smell, which is not hard to do at all in my little Z4. I’ve
come reluctantly to the conclusion that the ’07 3.0si is
the favorite street car in my current fleet. One, because
it is sadly the last one with the right number of pedals,
but also because it is like a go-cart and begs me to break
the law and do stupid things. It usually doesn’t have to
beg for long and then off we go. If you had told me a
few years ago that I would love this car (or even own
it for that matter), I would have said you were crazy
because, why on earth would I want a car that would
have terrible wind noise, cowl shake and mess up my
hair? After test driving one on a whim, I noticed that
not only did it (thanks to a nifty plastic thingee behind
the seats) not mess up my hair, or have terrible wind
noise, but it had almost no discernible cowl shake.
Like none. What it did have was incredible handling
and a torquey, but silky smooth classic BMW in line six.
So we are together, the Z4 and I, scaring the sheep
and cows in the countryside every nice sunny day
and even some that aren’t…Benadryl and all. And I
have noticed some things that are unique to being up
close and personal with the open air, such as the fact
that dead things on the side of the road start smelling
really bad after a disturbingly short period of time,
especially if it’s the middle of summer and they’ve been
baking for a while. The other thing is that smokers are
a WHOLE LOT more annoying on the road than they
are any place else, because if one is next to you at a
stop light, there is nothing you can do to get away from
the smoke. Recently, one of these geniuses flicked his
burning butt right onto the leather seat of my open car,
which caused mass panic as I located it, threw it back
at him and then imagined what he would look like with
a knife sticking out of his eye.
your lane completely so that you have to slow down to
a crawl and wait while they huff it up the hill, OR drive
into the other lane to go around them and potentially
have a head-on collision. As if this weren’t annoying
enough, some think it’s perfectly ok to come over and
talk to you because you have your top down and they
think you are open to verbal discourse.
Cyclists have been smug since the beginning...
For similar reasons, I also live in fear of bees and those
big Mack trucks that like to drop rocks on you from
high above, high curbs that are oddly shaped and
impossible to see from such a low center of gravity and
uneven driveway aprons. And yet, none of these holds
a candle to the actual thing I fear and loathe most. The
cyclist. Yes, that spandex clad scourge of the road that
tend to travel in packs, exuding smugness. Like wasps,
the warmer it gets, the more of them you come upon.
Let me just state for the record that it’s hard to be smug
when you’re dead and maybe that’s part of the problem.
I am never open to verbal exchange with others when
I’m driving, so I was beyond annoyed when a neon
sponsor-clad stretchy sausage pedaled over to me at a
stop light to inform me that, “It is a Pennsylvania state
law that you MUST give us four feet of space when
passing.” Apparently, I had not done this when I drove
past him and I’m sure that he was right, 1. Because I had
never heard of this law until that very moment, and 2. I
didn’t need to give him four feet in order to avoid hitting
him and 3. Doing so on a narrow road would have put
me into the other lane and into oncoming traffic and so
please refer to reason number two. Also, Pennsylvania
isn’t actually a state—it’s a commonwealth, but I didn’t
say that since it would just make ME look smug and
little ponytailed girls in BMWs have our own issues
with smugness. Actually, my rage kept me from saying
anything at all, which kept him from hurling his little
plastic water bottle at me and so I simply drove away.
Here we have a group of people who participate in a
sport, and I am specifically calling out those who see
this as a sport, because there seems to be an irrational
disproportion of smugness to spandex ratio. The
person you see dressed like, well, a normal person who
happens to be on a bike with a helmet and backpack
is probably on his way to work because work isn’t too
far, it’s a nice day and he wants to save on fuel. Fine.
It’s the person in the full “Tour de Poseur” kit who goes
out of his way to (usually with several buddies) to ride
right in the middle of the road side by side, blocking
And that’s when it occurred to me that he knows
nothing about me. He does not know that I have the
skill to drive so close to him that I could graze the edge
of my mirror against the rubber end of his handle bar
and cause no harm to him or his bike. He does not
know anything about the countless thousands of hours
that I have and continue to train behind the wheel and
teach other people how to do what I do; that I have no
desire to hurt him. And well he shouldn’t because I’m
a rare breed. I see people doing unfathomably stupid
things to one another on the road every day and this is
10
one of the reasons that I have a bicycle, but almost
never ride it on public roads. When I do, I put it in
my car and go to a place that has specific bike trails. I
also ride it around the paddock at the track because it
makes getting from the garage to pit lane much easier.
I realize that most motorists will see me as nothing but
a bag of meat on two wheels and I know that right or
wrong, if we come to blows, they will win because
they are bigger. No amount of fist shaking will ever
change that.
It also occurred to me that this works both ways.
Sitting at a gas station recently, I heard a sound that
I normally only hear at the track. It was being made
by a new 911 fully decorated with numbers and
“sponsors”, had a roll cage and an extremely loud
exhaust system. The sound it made as he tore away
from a light made my brain split open. There is a
reason people wear ear plugs at the track. This car
had no business being driven on the street. The cage
alone made it unsafe to drive without a helmet, his
enthusiasm as the light changed, was just stupid. I
couldn’t help but compare the driver to my cyclist
friend. The stickers and numbers didn’t turn him into
Sebastian Vettel any more than the spandex jersey guy
was Lance Armstrong. They both just looked silly.

(May not be the Porsche in question.)
For those who also enjoy going fast and terrorizing
the sheep and cows, keep in mind that there is a safe
place for you to do this where there will be no cyclists.
Not even one. The race track is our safe trail, where
we are not seen as a bag of meat and the police have
no jurisdiction. This is how I will be spending the
other portion of my spring, when I am not cleaning
yellow dust off of my cars. If you happen to see me
in my little silver car, please don’t yell at me--a simple
wave will do. If for some reason I don’t wave back,
it’s because I’m high on antihistamines and trying to
elude the smell of fries.

Taylor Handwerk presents:
Tool Talk
The Right Tools, Lower Blood Pressure
A very good friend told me this:
“Taylor, guys like you and I aren’t
rich enough to do it wrong the
first time.” At first I didn’t really
get it or it didn’t sink in, but as
time passed it found a home in my
cognizance. Whenever I make a
buying decision I remember these
words; they’re constantly sneaking
to my mind’s fore front. Generally
I listen, but on occasion I try to
do something on the cheap and
guess what? It inevitably costs me
more money, time or headaches
than if I had done it right the first
time. This mantra is the keystone
of this quarter’s article.
Why do they have specialty tools
and why does BMW love them so
much? Do they only employ sick,
perverse engineers who like to
torture mechanics, or do they just
want to keep it in the family? I’m
guessing it’s a mixture of both.
Many regular maintenance jobs
can be handled with basic hand
tools, but even these jobs can
benefit from the use of specialty
tools. Some of these tools are
BMW specific, while some are
job specific. BMW specific tools
are the bane of almost every
mechanic’s existence unless you
16
are a BMW tech or work in a
specialty shop. You can go online
and search jobs that require
certain factory tools, and you’ll
be amazed at some people’s
ingenuity. These tools are typically
expensive or hard to find, and
you only really need to do the job
once or twice during the vehicle’s
life. That being said, the monetary
cost typically outweighs the hair
pulling out, skinned knuckles or
damaged parts that result from
your home grown solution.
job time in half versus basic hand
tools, depending on the model.
These tools are specialized to the
job, but can generally be used
across different manufacturers
thus making their purchase more
beneficial. There are usually a
handful of manufacturers making
these tools as well, which helps
keep costs reasonable.
I know it hurts to buy some crazy
tool because BMW did what
they did, but you’ll appreciate it
when the job is done quickly and
correctly. These tools also tend
to have a decent value on the
secondary market so you can see
a few bucks on the back end, or
at least a few beers from
your buddy who’s doing
the same job next month.
Job specific tools make
certain tasks a million
times easier, but many
people don’t even
know they exist. Want
to do a brake pad
change? We offer a
handful of tools that
can literally cut the
Remember when you are
purchasing tools: quality matters.
If you find a tool that is half the
price of everything else offered,
there is probably a good reason
for it. Look for tool makers with
solid warranties and reputations;
you may pay a few dollars more,
but you’ll be happy you did.
I hope you leave this article with
a heightened sense of analytical
reasoning. Weigh the outcomes
for each decision you are making,
and let those answers guide you.
Inevitably you will make mistakes,
but these mistakes are necessary
to reinforce the lesson. Be smart
and do the job right the first time,
unless you’re loaded and enjoy
wasting time and money.
JOIN US FOR AN HPDE!
I’m sure as you’ve been perusing this edition of the award winning (ok, award worthy!) issue
of DelVal’s Bavarian Motor Notes, you’ve been building up your curiosity regarding what the
chapter has in store HDPE-wise for 2016. Please read on, especially if any of the following
statements apply to you:
1. “Even though I own a car aptly described by its manufacturer as “The Ultimate Driving
Machine”, I’ve never been to an HPDE because I find bumper to bumper rush hour traffic a
fully satisfying way to enjoy my ride.”
2. “I do want to challenge myself and see what else my car can do besides crawling through
bumper to bumper traffic, but I don’t feel my driving skills are good enough to drive on a
racetrack”.
3. “Even though I find the idea of participation intriguing, I’ve not been to an HPDE before
because I really would like some advice and extra support so my rookie status will not be a
problem for me or others at the event.”
Since I know no one reading this fits the situation described in #1 above, I have great news
for everyone feeling like #2 or #3 might fit their situation; you should attend DelVal’s next
HPDE of the ’16 driving season, running May 14 and 15 at Palmer Motorsports Park. This
event will be run jointly with the Boston Chapter and will include BMW CCA’s guaranteed
excellence in high performance driving instruction for drivers of all experience levels. The
event features two days of driving and instruction on one of the hottest new tracks in the
country! With 190 feet of elevation change over a 2.3 mile alpine wilderness course, Palmer
provides a unique track experience that really can’t be found anywhere else. And most
important for new drivers, we’ll also have support for new students provided by DelVal’s
Student Resource Center – the benefits this team offers to new students are too numerous
to list – the chapter website describes the support you can access to make your first track
experience one that you’re guaranteed to enjoy.
And for those of you whose readiness for Palmer is in doubt, please don’t forget DelVal
offers a complete season of opportunity for high performance driving. The season is detailed
on the chapter website and includes the following upcoming events:
•
•
•
14-15 May - Palmer Motorsports Park (joint event with Boston BMW CCA)
13-14 July - Watkins Glen International
19-21 Aug - New Jersey Motorsports Park - Lightning (Advanced drivers day on Friday)

Over Drive
The Monkey In The Machine
It seems that you can’t look at a website or
open a newspaper (remember those?) these
days without reading about how we will all
be riding around in self-driving cars. Google,
Apple and other tech companies apparently
stand ready to take over your driving “chores”
to free your time to be even more tied to your
personal electronic enslavement device (credit
for that term, I believe, to Joseph Chamberlain,
the Roundel’s resident grumpy old man).
Your company, of course, will love this. It will
be another hour or more each day where you’ll
have no excuse for being out of touch and not
working, and it’s apparently another move in
the continuing efforts of the tech companies to
know our every move and every desire.
Leaving aside the whole issue of how desirable
this is, especially for us enthusiasts who actually
enjoy driving (imagine that. Inconceivable!),
how likely is all this really? Certainly, there’s
some impressive technology already available. I
wrote recently about the Tesla, and it’s uncanny
autopilot function, which functions extremely
well, but that’s on a well-marked multi-lane
divided highway, which is clearly quite a
different environment from, say, Centre City at
rush hour.
So, for an alternative take on how well
autonomous technology works in practice, I
refer you to the system that controls the wipers
on my 2012 X5. I refer to it, with a mixture of
frustration and affection, as the Wiper Monkey.
I’ve never met my wiper monkey. Being a
German car, my wiper monkey lives in a cage
in the basement of the BMW/Bosch menagerie,
This is what
Google
thinks a car
looks like...
20
somewhere in the bowels of Munich. He has
no windows in his world, just a TV, food, and a
large lever. Most of the time, he’s a lazy fellow.
He sleeps quietly, saving his energy for when I
need him. He has one job: When I turn on the
automatic wipers on my X5, he gets a little jolt,
and wakes up. His job is to control the speed at
which they wipe.
He’s a well-trained chap. He enjoys flipping
the switch up and down. When he’s tired, or
Downton Abbey is on the TV, he flips it slowly.
When he’s excited, looking through his copy of
Playmonkey, he flips it fast. If’s he’s busy eating
fresh bananas, he might not flip it at all. What
he doesn’t know is that every time he flips the
switch the wipers in my X5, 3,500 miles away,
wipe back and forth as I need them. Or not.
His reality and my needs rarely seem to align.
Unlikely? Maybe. But this is the only way I can
reconcile the behaviour of the wipers in my X5
with any attachment to the wet reality of the
windscreen in front of me.
My wiper monkey also has a partner, the
headlight mole. He turns on the automatic
headlights on my car. Sometimes. Usually
on a nice, bright day. Foggy or overcast? He
likes those. He doesn’t want to disturb things
with bright light, and he certainly never talks
with the wiper monkey to see if it’s raining, so
that headlights would be, possibly, useful. I’ve
already exiled the headlight mole’s partner, the
high beam lemur, who found the reflections
off road signs scary, and frequently refused my
requests for more light.
Now, I know I’m spoiled with all these gadgets.
We’re told the public demands them, or maybe
it’s because the car companies keep thinking
they need to add all this extra technology to
stay competitive in selling their products. What
they forget is that we’re a society who’s VCR’s
all used to flash “12:00”, and we’ve really not
learned a lot since then.
So, I hope they’re working on some serious
genetic engineering in Munich, because if
my self-driving car will actually be driven by
any part of the menagerie in Munich, then the
technology is much less ready than we’ve been
lead to believe.

Why use Rock Hill Financial, LLC?
In our experience, the funding of a loan does not end the interaction
we have with, you, our customer. Our intent is to build an ongoing
relationship with our clients. We want to make sure that we meet
your current financial requirements as well as planning for future
hopes & dreams.
Our Difference:
We are registered with multiple lenders which allows us to provide you

getting the best deal at settlement but also being happy with your
lender on an ongoing basis.
Reliability:
Unlike other mortgage brokers and banks, Rock Hill Financial, LLC is
not trying to become the biggest in the nation. We want to make sure
every client feels satisfied that they have been treated fairly and would
