Letter from the publisher
Dear Parents,
Before coming to Las Vegas I remember
telling my former boss at The Las Vegas
Review-Journal that I wasn’t interested
in moving to Southern Nevada from the
East Coast. I said to her, “Las Vegas is
great, but nobody actually lives there.” I
had been coming to Vegas each year for
trade shows and with the myopic viewpoint of a tourist I didn’t see Southern
Nevada as a great place to raise a family.
Of course at the time I had never been
anywhere besides the convention center.
Now that my wife and I have lived here
several years and are raising two boys
and two girls, I know that Las Vegas can
be a great place for families. This special
issue of ParentsGuide of Las Vegas is
dedicated to having fun with your kids
and building the kind of good memories
with your family that will be cherished
for a lifetime.
Best regards,

The Circus is
Coming to Town
A
s parents there are many demands
on our time and energy. Often those
demands crowd out time for our children.
I was talking to a good friend of mine
whose daughter is now grown. He mentioned how he remembers coming home
from work and his daughter would ask him
to jump on the trampoline with her or play
some game. He would tell her he couldn’t
because he was just too tired. How my
friend now regrets not carving out some
time for his daughter.
Thomas S. Monson commented on
taking advantage of the time we have today,
especially with our children. “Daydreaming of the past and longing for the future
may provide comfort but will not take the
place of living in the present. This is the day
of our opportunity, and we must grasp it.”
Professor Harold Hill, in Meredith
Willson’s The Music Man, cautioned: “You
pile up enough tomorrows, and you’ll find
you’ve collected a lot of empty yesterdays.”
There is no tomorrow to remember if we
don’t do something today, and to live most
fully today, we must do that which is of
greatest importance. Let us not procrastinate those things which matter most.
A wonderful example of this philosophy
was shared by Arthur Gordon many years
ago in a national magazine. He wrote:
When I was around thirteen and my
brother ten, Father had promised to take us
to the circus. But at lunchtime there was a
phone call; some urgent business required
his attention downtown. We braced ourselves for disappointment. Then we heard
him say into the phone, ‘No, I won’t be
down. It’ll have to wait.’
When he came back to the table, Mother
smiled. ‘The circus keeps coming back, you
know,’ she said. ‘I know,’ said Father. ‘But
childhood doesn’t.’ Ages all

The Ants and the Clouds Knew Why
Written and Illustrated by Kathryn Grant
This picture book follows
a young pig as he discovers his place in the world
of nature. His outlook
matures from feeling proud
that he is bigger than an
ant to understanding his
minuteness in comparison to the vast sky
and clouds. Colorful illustrations add to
the story with subtle details such as the
varying vests the pig wears which represent
his progression. Appropriate for beginning readers, this book includes “words to

are questions for parents or teachers to use
to facilitate discussion. Ages 5-8

ParentsGuide | Strike Zone is a Hit for Kids!
I
f you were going to build a bowling
center from the ground up in Las Vegas
you would probably want the following;
First, a great location with lots of parking directly next to the bowling center.
Second, dozens of state-of-the-art bowling lanes, maybe even more lanes than any
other bowling center in Southern Nevada.
Finally, you would hire a “dream team” to
make sure your bowling center was run
well so the bowlers would have great experiences time and time again.
Well it just so happens that in 2005,
Strike Zone Bowling Center at Sunset Station followed that exact blueprint and in
the process put together a world class bowling facility. What’s more, Strike Zone is set
up in a way that caters to families while also
delivering fantastic league and recreational
bowling for the entire community. Because
Strike Zone has so many lanes it is one of
the few bowling centers that offers open
bowling every night of the week.
With respect to kids and youth bowling the three people that make Strike Zone
the choice for young bowlers are the Youth
Director, Dick Peters; Party Planner, Donna
Dyer and Bowling Center Manager Jim
Welch. As a side note the best combined
bowling score of the trio is 899. For those
of you who are not die hard bowlers that
means two of them have bowled a perfect
300 game and one a 299. In fact, Dick and
Jim both boast multiple 300 games, while
Donna bowled a 299 while she was eight
months pregnant.
Perhaps more impressive than bowling
300 is the fact that Strike Zone hosts nearly
700 birthday parties per year, and since
there are 72 lanes at Strike Zone there is
never a problem accommodating multiple
parties. Birthday parties include pizza, cake,
time in the arcade and a personal bowling
pin for the birthday boy or girl which is
signed by all of the birthday guests (my son
still has one proudly displayed in his room
next to his sports trophies). While birthday parties account for many
of the young bowlers at Strike Zone, youth
leagues and group outings are responsible
for drawing hundreds of kids each month to
Sunset Station to bowl. Strike Zone hosts a
number of middle school teams and awards
the “Jr. High School” Team Champion each

year in April. Additionally six local high
school teams regularly play their bowling
matches at Strike Zone Bowling Center.
One event that Strike Zone should be
particularly proud of is the “Kids Helping
Kids Bowl-A-Thon” which takes place each
March. The young bowlers enjoy a great
day of bowling while the Caring for Kids
Foundation benefits from super participation. Another group of bowlers who has
found a home at Strike Zone are homeschoolers. One of the moms in the group
says, “I organize some of the events for our
homeschooling group and this is one of the
monthly activities that we do. Sunset Lanes
has always been great with our entire group
and very accommodating in working with
our fluctuating number of bowlers. They
genuinely seem happy to have us there
every month.”
The Bowl-A-thon and school groups are
just two examples of the type of positive
impact that Jim Welch and his team have
been able to make in our community. Jim’s
extensive background in bowling has taken
him to more than 400 bowling centers.
He has seen many examples of successful
bowling centers as well as many less successful examples. It is interesting to note
that the facility is just one reason people
return again to bowl at a specific location.
Although Jim is quick to say he loves running the “Cadillac” of bowling centers.
Jim’s work at Strike Zone is “all-consuming”. He is an ambassador for the sport of
bowling and wants to make sure that Bowling remains the number one participatory
sport in the country (F.Y.I. - 75,000,000
people a year bowl in the United States). If
you are one of those 75,000,000 who have
enjoyed bowling and want your children to
learn how to bowl there may be no better
place to teach them than Strike Zone. One
option for parents with kids between the
ages of three and five is “Preschooler Bowling” which takes place every Thursday and
Friday from 10 to 10:45AM. Young kids
get two games plus shoe rental for only $6.
An option for older kids this summer is
“Summer Movie Camp” which will happen
every Friday during the summer from 12N
to 2PM. For $12 kids get unlimited bowling
+ lunch + see a movie on the large overhead screens. If you want to get your kids involved in
bowling or looking to have some fun as a
family over the summer vacation contact

T
he Las Vegas Strip has lots
to offer tourists, but the conventional thinking is that locals
with children have little reason
to go to the strip. There are actually several very entertaining,

street solicitors and steer clear of
the risqué mobile billboards, but

The Need for Speed: Go Kart Racing in Las Vegas
S
o you want your kids to have fun, but you want to have
fun too? Maybe Go Karts are the answer. In Las Vegas
there are two great places where both parents and kids can
race Go Karts. The first is Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix. LVMG
has been a Las Vegas area family attraction for years and
with four separate race tracks LVMGP appeals to kids (and
adults) of all ages. They also offer outdoor amusement rides,
an arcade and birthday parties including on premise pizza,
cake and ice cream.
Another option for getting behind the wheel is Pole Position Raceway. The Go Karts at Pole Position are geared to
older kids and adults. If you have an aspiring Kurt Busch in
your family then you might be interested in Pole Position’s
three day youth racing camp.

Make Summer a
Productive Time
for Learning
By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington
he end of the school year may find
your children exhausted from a year of
hard work and fixated on that great burst
of freedom that begins in June. If so, your
suggestion that they consider some “summertime learning activities” might not go
over too well. But staying smart during the
warm weather months doesn’t depend on
test-taking and fretting over grades. With
less structure and more adventure, the following activities can turn leisure time into
learning time and help prepare your child
for challenges in the year to come.
Look beyond the books at your local
library. Many libraries are true resource
centers, offering a wide array of educational
and cultural activities. Your child can participate in group learning projects, learn a
foreign language, build technology skills
and more. Young children in particular
can have a lot of fun participating in story-
T
telling activities, while teens can often use
libraries to learn about colleges and universities and the steps that need to be taken to
qualify for admission.
Encourage ambitious independent
learning projects. If your child enjoys writing and storytelling, consider journaling
activities. These can be as simple as keeping a diary or more inventive tasks such as
using prose, photography and illustrations
to chronicle summertime activities such as
family trips or camp. If your child is especially visual, consider using a loose-leaf
notebook that enables individual pages to
be taken out and posted in family-friendly
areas such as the kitchen or playroom.
Scientifically-minded students can find
many exciting “science fair”-type projects
through books at their local library and
through Web sites that specialize in sharing
this type of information. One of the most
comprehensive sites is “Science Fair Central,” offered by The Discovery Channel at
school.discovery.com/sciencefaircentral.
Students who enjoy mathematics can test
and strengthen their skills through Figure
This! (www.figurethis.org). This website
features engaging mathematics challenges
that are designed to be completed by chil-
dren and families together. While they tend
to be “fun,” the challenges are also an effective primer for the rigorous mathematics that most students will be required to
master in school.
Volunteer. Lending a hand to those in
need and engaging in community service
projects can build a strong sense of selfesteem and people-skills. Most communities offer ample opportunities to volunteer
through churches, schools, local government initiatives and neighborhood associations.
Turn to teachers and school counselors
for help. After spending many months with
your child, teachers and guidance counselors can be good sources of information
on summer learning activities that tie into
your child’s interests and aptitudes. Talking
with these educators can also give you great
ideas for summertime learning opportunities that strengthen your child’s grounding
in “the basics” and expand horizons and
expectations for the year to come.
Dr. Raymond J. Huntington and Eileen
Huntington are co-founders of Huntington
Learning Center, which has helped children
achieve success in school for 32 years.
