The Apothecary Museum
6
In the market square of Maaseik stands the proud
façade of Den Blauwe Leeuwe house, which is built
in typical Maaslander style. But this is not just any
façade, it is the entrance to the oldest privatelyowned Apothecary in the country.
Engelbert Lanckbein from Aken opened the Apothecary in 1704; from then on, six generations of pharmacists served there for more than 250 years, until
1959.
Exhibition
Poisons
In 2010 we offer an exhibition that will
give you an insight into the restoration
works that will start in 2011.
What will the furniture look like after the
restoration? Why will it be displayed in a
different manner? Another colour? Why?
Come and find out more soon!
Opium and arsenic are but a few of the
best-known poisons. Our Apothecary
has several other dangerous products,
which have been carefully categorized
in our Book of Poisons.
Restoration
In 2011 you will be able to watch the restorers at work, as they reveal the old
colours of the cabinets once again and
put together the furniture once again.
The final outcome will be a surprise for
everyone.
Herb garden
Enjoy a stroll through our renovated
herb garden. You can pick up the scents,
enjoy and sometimes even taste some
of the herbs that are used in our Apothecary.

St Catherine’s Church is always worth a visit and then we have not
even discussed the exclusive treasures that can be found in this
neo-Classic church. The Codex Eyckensis, which has been included
in the Flemish Government’s list of Masterpieces, constitutes the
most important ecclesiastical treasure of the Province of Limburg,
together with the eight-century Textilia and other religious artefacts.

Eyckensis with a user-friendly DVD presentation. This is the oldest Book of Gospels in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, which
is carefully preserved in the Treasury. You can

Anglo-Saxon textiles in Europe, beautiful reliquaries, silver and the relic shrines of St Harlindis and St Relindis, which are carried in a
procession to the church of Aldeneik every 25
years (next procession in 2022).

All works of the renowned brothers in one room!
Groups are welcome to the Van Eyck Exhibition in the agreeable 17th century
Capucienen church (built in 1635 and extended in 1956). Maaseik has always
been well disposed to its world-class sons. A statute of the brothers was erected
on ‘Belgium’s most beautiful market’ way back in 1864.

Next to life-size slides and photos of all

more about the origin, the craftsmanship
and the creations of these Flemish Masters. You would normally have to travel
the world to see these oeuvres. Now

Aldeneik’s Roman-gothic St Anna’s
church boasts a long and diverse history. The first structures date from the
730s when the local saints Harlindis
and Relindis built a convent. Some 1270
years later the exterior of the church has
been fully restored, while the interior is
home to some remarkable pictures and
objects of interest. The remains of old
murals and a floor slab incorporated into
the wall, which goes by the name ‘the
sorceress’s stone’ according to an old
legend, would fire anyone’s imagination.
If you’re curious too, call the tourism
service now to arrange a guided tour.
Be sure to visit the remarkable village
of Heppeneert. Every house is built
on the west side of the road along the
Maas levee. Heppeneert’s parochial
church has been a busy place of pilgrimage since 1883. The scent of burning
candles and hundreds of votive tiles accentuate the typical ambience of St Gertrudis church. The 16th century figures
constitute the most important artistic elements of the interior, including the retable fragment of St Jan Evangelist and
BVM of Rest. The attractive park west of
the church is home to the small chapels
of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Highly
recommended for those that wish to find
some peace and quiet for reflection.

The Museum
Doll and Toy Museum
In the former convent of the Ursuline sisters, in Boomgaardstraat, in the centre of
Maaseik, you will find the John Selbach
Museum. It has a comprehensive collection of paintings, sculptures and furniture, which covers the period from the
sixteenth century until the early twentieth century. The first department accommodates the extensive collection of
paintings spanning four centuries from
the 16th century to the early 20th century.
Subjects include interiors, cityscapes,
landscapes and seascapes, still lifes,
animals and human portraits. As such,
visitors make a cultural journey through
time as they move through the museum
– in more ways than one. That sense of
travelling through time is enhanced by
the series of rooms furnished in various
styles, from Renaissance to Biedemeier.
Next to this imposing collection, you will
also find the
on the top floor, where the cells of the
interns were situated. This doll and toy
museum, established by Corinne Selbach, was formerly located in Maastricht.
Toy dolls from the period between ± 1750
and 1950, made of wood, wax, papiermâché, fabric and biscuit porcelain have
been arranged in various period rooms.
Next to the dolls, there is also an interesting collection of antique toy furniture,
tea sets, tin toys, steam machines, mechanical toys, teddy bears, train sets,
cars and other gadgets.

500 km of dedicated cycle paths!
If you’re wondering if there are still places in Flanders
that have not succumbed to the dictatorship of cars,
you should get along to the Kempen and Maasland
regional park, which includes the best of what twelve
municipalities of northeast Limburg have to offer, all
accessible by signposted cycle paths. Maaseik is a
great starting point, offering a number of routes. So
what are you waiting for? Hope to see you soon!
You’d have to look hard to find a 1000
km network of cycle paths, 50% of which
is off limits to cars, anywhere else. Get
yourself a cycling map from Tourism
Maaseik and follow one of the clearly
numbered trails, each of which are interconnected by a series of junctions,
so you can change direction on a whim.
Head for the water mills, taking the ZuidWillemsvaart hunting path and following
the Maas to the Spaanjerd. Or if you’re
looking for more excitement, take the
smuggler’s route across the border to
the Netherlands.

Hotels in Maaseik offer a host of special
packages. Tourism Maaseik can tell you
more. Our own cycling package can be

Walkers and ramblers will certainly find plenty to take their fancy in Maaseik. There are both
interesting town walks and treks through unspoiled nature. Even extending over several days.
Next to its beautiful and quiet cycling routes, the Regional Landscape Kempen and Maasland
also has a host of walking paths in the Kempen-Broek Border Park, in the Maas Valley River
Park and in the Hoge Kempen national park. So put on your walking boots, make your way to

River Park
GrensPark Kempen-Broek is a park covering more than 25,000 ha that takes in
the municipalities of Bree (B), Bocholt (B),
Maaseik (B), Kinrooi (B), Cranendonck
(NL), Nederweert (NL) and Weert (NL).
The central part of the park is a chain
of nature areas, including swampland,
marshes and water features. The drier
north is home to wooded dunes and
moorland. The fringes contain pasturage, fields and wooded borders. There
is so much diversity! Wurfeld accommodates part of the GrensPark: TöschLangeren. You will be amazed by this
little piece of wilderness. On the other
side of Bosbeek you can walk through
the picturesque landscape of Langeren
with historic wooded borders and banks.
The five walks start at the parking lot of
Wurfeld castle. The new walking map
costs e 2.
Wurfeld castle is also the start of the
long Kempen-Broek walk. You will see
GrensPark in all its glorious diversity.
The fully signed path is 104 km long,
but it can be shortened in seven places,
enabling walkers to choose the optimal
distance for them. Tours range from
one to several days. The walking map
costs e 5. To see all your options, visit

paths.
Maaseik-Aldeneik cultural walk
If you wish to find out more about the
legends and the historic background
of the area, then you can choose from
two interesting walks in the walking brochure: one is in picturesque Aldeneik
and the other in cultural Maaseik (e 3).
In November 2009, the ‘Aldeneik & Maaseik, a current of culture’ walking area
was opened. Five qualitative looped
walks will take you through the quiet village of Heppeneert, the historic centres
of Maaseik and Aldeneik, and past the
gravel pond of Heerenlaak. Your guides
are the well-known walking posts of the
region. Start out from the church in Aldeneik or at the entrance of the Heerenlaak region. On the back of the map,

Neer mill
Wurfelder mill
The oldest Bosbeek mill sits in the shadow of St Lambertus church. This grain
mill was first put into operation as early
as 1330. The timber and loam structure made way for the existing building
in 1859. The miller is eager to tell you
how the grain is being ground into flour
and immediately suits the action to the
word.
This well preserved water mill was milling local grain as early as 1560 and remained in operation until 1863. It was
also a paper mill for a time, which can be
seen from the ventilation hatches. They
were most likely used to dry the newly
produced paper. The wooden cogs
used until the end of the fifties remain
today. The mill is still in private hands,
but considering its good condition it certainly warrants a visit.
Klaaskens mill
Water mills rule along Bosbeek and Oeterbeek. Twelve
of the sixteen original mills are still in good or very
good working order, making this creek one of the most
productive in the province. Whether they were used to
grind grain into flour or to saw wood, the mills are testament to an illustrious past that will appeal to young
and old alike.
Built in 1548, this oilseed mill is still a
very interesting visit. Extended in 1916 to
become the only saw mill powered by
water in Flanders, the mill has now been
restored to its original conditions. Take
the guided tour to see planks sawed in
the traditional way. The former baking
house is now a café for cycle enthusiasts. Miller’s explanation: 1, 3 and 5 pm.
Dorper mill
This buckwheat mill is undoubtedly the
oldest mill in Opoeteren. Together with
St Dionysius church and Bosbessen
square it is one of the village’s top-drawer attractions.
Time has gnawed at the structure, which
was built in 1530 and rebuilt in 1859, but
the exterior and interior is still intact.
The building is currently used to store
cattle feed, but the mill is still in working order.

Ballooning over the Maasland
Bear in mind:
Ballooning is highly dependent on the
weather conditions. Only the pilot can
decide whether you will lift off or not on the
day itself. This is important for your security.
There is even a chance that the flight may
be cancelled on the day itself or that you
may take off from somewhere else (outside
of Maaseik even).
Hop on board for a fantastic airborne voyage. Taking a trip in a hot-air balloon is always an adventure. The voyage into the
unknown, the tension because you never
know how long you will be in the air and
where the wind will take you. The sense
of relaxation as you overcome any fear
of heights. Everyone nurtures a desire to
feel free like a bird, high up above everyone and everything and to escape earth
for just a short while. You can assist in the
preparations and soon after you will be
floating over the Maasland region. After a
soft landing, a fun surprise awaits you.
Departure: field across the tennis courts
of Maaseik and next to the Mosque
(Sportlaan).
Price:€ 160/adult and
€ 80 for children - 10 years.
Bookings: Tourism Maaseik
Tel. 089 81 92 90
What to wear?
Leisure or sports clothes! But above all,
wear sport shoes.
In the morning, you may consider wear-
ing wellies. The grass is wet and a balloon flight with wet feet is not that pleasurable. So wear sport clothes and shoes.
It is not cold in the air, so be sure not to
dress too warmly!
Can you take food and drink in the basket?
No food or drink allowed onboard!
What are the minimum and maximum
ages?
Under the law, anybody can go ballooning. You are also insured! Exceptions to
this rule include pregnant women. If you
are seven months pregnant, you will be
refused (same rules apply as for plane
travel). You have to notify the pilot of
any injuries you may have prior to your
departure in order to comply with insurance rules. Take into account that a basket is at least 1 metre high.
What about body weight?
Prior to your departure, the weight of all
the passengers will be requested in order to draw up a loading chart and to ensure that our balloon is not overloaded.
This is a compulsory procedure (Flight
Manual).
Does someone have to follow the balloon?
Yes! We always request that someone
follows the balloon. It is a lot of fun and
not difficult at all! The team’s car will accompany you and will wait for you if you
are delayed as a result of traffic problems.
How long will we be up in the air?
A balloon ride will last at least an hour.
This may be impacted by certain factors
such as wind direction, aviation regulations and we also take into account your
and our safety. In case of unsafe situations, we will immediately land. After we
land, you will take part in a traditional
balloon ride baptism ceremony and receive a certificate as a souvenir of your
trip.

In mid-2009, the Tourist Information Office of Oeterdal moved into brand-new
offices in ‘t Eilandje. There is a loan desk
in the new office and next to information
about the tourist assets of Opoeteren,
Neeroeteren and Maaseik, you can also
find out more about what is going on in
the Maas Valley.
We mainly promote cycling, selling cycling maps and renting out bicycles.
You can find information about Limburg
as well as about other provinces here.
There is a camping site on the grounds,
as well as a marina, a motor home site,
kayak club “De Oeter”, brasserie “’t Eilandje”, a water ski club, petanque courts
and a small play area. Every year, thousands of children bivouac here.

Tavern-Brasserie
’t Eiland
A brand-new tavern was opened between the old and the new ZuidWillemsvaart, named “’t Eilandje”. It
can be reached on foot, by bike or by
car across the old passageway, which
takes you from the old dyke of the canal to a real island. What can be more
enjoyable than sitting in a terrace
with a drink, surrounded by beautiful
quiet nature? The tavern is also suited for different types of parties, ranging from weddings, family events or
corporate events. The menu includes
a range of dishes, pancakes and they
even serve old-fashioned buckwheat
pancakes.
