DEEPA WILLINGHAM TO SPEAK AT AREA 7 FOUNDATION DINNER
February 2, 2016 Vol 2. No 20 DEEPA WILLINGHAM TO SPEAK AT AREA 7 FOUNDATION DINNER Mrs. Deepa Biswas Willingham, a naturalized citizen of the United States, was born and brought up in Calcutta, India where she obtained her primary and secondary education under the stewardship of Mother Teresa, who was her teacher, undergraduate degree at the University of Calcutta and came to the United States in 1964 to pursue graduate degrees. lives but also the lives of their children and their communities. When is such a win-win situation, how can I not do it?” it Mrs. Willingham is the winner of many humanitarian awards. Mrs. Willingham’s professional life was spent in healthcare management, education and entrepreneurship. She and her husband, Mr. Richard Willingham, are business owners. Currently, however, most of Mrs. Willingham’s time and personal resources are spent in the non-profit sector. She is an active Rotarian and she is the Founder/Chair of PACE Universal. Through PACE Universal and the Piyali Learning Center (PLC) she is meticulously “selling” the concept of allowing girls to be educated instead of being married in early childhood or being sent to work, or being sold for sex trade. Through her efforts and use of personal resources she is determined to make PLC a poverty eradication proto -type model that others can duplicate to heal a hurting planet. When asked why Mrs. Willingham started this school for girls in the country of her birth, she answers, “It is the fulfillment of a life-long dream…to give back the gift of education, particularly to girls. Girls’ education in many severely poverty stricken areas like India, is still a luxury for far too many and it is certainly not a given. And yet when girls are educated, they grow up to be responsible citizens, changing not only their own Editor’s Note: I heard Ms Willingham speak at the 2009 RI Convention in Birmingham England. She is a VERY inspirational speaker and it would be a shame if you missed this opportunity to see her while she is in our little corner of the Rotary World. INTERACT NEWS Fifteen members of Jackson Rotary Interact Club met on Monday Feb 1st in the Rotary Room at Thomi’s and made plans for their upcoming trip to Glide Memorial in San Francisco. They also made Valentine’s Day cards for the elderly which will be distributed to the Jackson Senior Center in the near future. Under President Adelaide’s leadership the club is continuing to grow as they had a new member join them last night. Eight of the students have already signed up to assist us during the Trivia Challenge on March 12th. SPRING IS ALMOST HERE …? Art Long was cleaning up the Vista Point area last Thursday and he found that a few of the daffodils are already starting to bloom. Is mother nature trying to tell us something? Let’s hope that the blooms last for the next couple of months until the official start of spring. CLUB FELLOWSHIP EVENT Rene from Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Thanking the club for their past support and explaining that the Valentine’s Day Raffle tickets are now available for purchase. A $10 ticket could win a BIG prize. Many valuable vacation trips, jewelry and other prizes are up for grabs. We will be having a fellowship outing on Wednesday February 24th to the hockey game in Stockton as the Stockton Heat hosts the San Diego Gulls. We will depart from the Railey’s shopping center about 5:00pm and take a bus to and from the game. We will be in rows 2-7 during the game. The cost of participation will be $30. We need a minimum of 50 people, so if you are interested, contact Jim Wilmarth for details. This is an excellent fellowship event to bring friends, family or potential members to participate in. Because of this outing, the club will not be meeting at Teresa’s on the 23rd. This event will count towards your attendance, so if you are unable to attend, take this opportunity to do a make up at one of the surrounding Rotary Club meetings and meet our fellow Rotarians in Amador county. WARNING: A highly dangerous virus called “Weekly FREE DINNER? Overload Recreational Killer” (WORK) is currently going around. If you come in contact with this WORK virus, you should immediately go to the nearest “Biological Anxiety Relief” (BAR) center to take antidotes known as “Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract” (WINE), “Radioactive Unwork Medicine” (RUM), “Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter” (BEER) or “Vaccine Official Depression Killing Antigen” (VODKA). Another little known, but effective remedy known as “Traumatic Experience Questioning Unsavory Inhuman Labor Antibiotic” (TEQUILA) has Also been proving effective in battling this virus. As the old adage goes: There’s no such thing as a “free dinner”. If you are the lucky winner of the free dinner, you will actually have to work for it by providing the club with a good joke AND by being the GREETER at the meeting. Come early, grab the GREETER’s badge and welcome our fellow members and guests to the meeting. This is an old school Rotary protocol that President Irene is bringing back to encourage fellowship within the membership. >>CLUB CALENDAR: SAVE THE DATE<< Tuesday Feb 2nd Joseph Svek III; Author: Sherlock Holmes and the Grinning Cat Tuesday Feb 9th Speaker TBD Tuesday Feb 16th Club Assembly Friday Feb 19th Area 7 Foundation Dinner at Thomi’s Saturday Feb 20th Interact Club’s trip to Glide Memorial in SF Tuesday Feb 23rd Club Dark (Good chance to visit another one of the other Amador County Rotary Clubs) Wednesday Feb 24th Fellowship bus trip to Stockton for Hockey Game Saturday, Mar 12th Trivia Challenge at Sutter Creek Auditorium Wednesday Mar 30th Four Club Membership Mixer at Thomi’s Banquet Room May 13-15, 2016 2016 District Conference at Atlantis Convention Center in Reno THIRD ANNUAL SUPERBOWL POOL The squares for our super bowl pool are all sold out.
