The Meadowbrook School Annual Report of Philanthropic Giving
THE MEADOWBROOK SCHOOL Annual Report of Philanthropic Giving, 2014-2015 A Letter From the President of the Board of Trustees The 2014-15 Meadowbrook School year was one for the history books. The 95th year at Meadowbrook started with the inauguration of the 9th Head of School, Michael J. Reardon. With his experience, we are poised for an exciting lead up to our 2019 Centennial Celebration and beyond. The energy and momentum from the success of his first year is evident all around campus. In addition, Meadowbrook enjoyed a record breaking fundraising year in 2014-15. We are grateful for the generosity of all of our donors reflected in this year’s Annual Report of Philanthropic Giving. As president of Meadowbrook’s Board of Trustees, I want to say thank you to all. It takes all of us – parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends – sharing in the common goal of advancing our wonderful school. In order to fulfill our mission, we are grateful to all those who recognize the importance of philanthropic support. The entire Meadowbrook community but, most importantly, our students and faculty, are the beneficiaries of your commitment and generosity. Thank you! In 2014-2015, over two hundred and fifty individuals contributed to our school, including alumni, parents (past and present), grandparents, faculty, staff and friends. Throughout the school year, we reached out to the community and the response was overwhelming. We started the year with a beautiful new monument sign at the corner of Meadowbrook and Hampton Roads because of the wonderful generosity of Geoffrey and Gretchen Jackson. This literally laid the “foundation” for a great year. In October, the Meadowbrook School Golf Outing was an amazing success bringing together members of our community for a fun-filled day and raising over $30,000 for Meadowbrook in the process. From September through June, your support of Parents of Meadowbrook initiatives such as Fall Festival, BINGO Night and the 4th annual Run for Education, resulted in POM’s gift to the school of over $16,000 – funds which supports all the unique programming that makes Meadowbrook so special. Finally, the year culminated in a terrific auction event hosted by Gwen and Dave Campbell. Over one hundred and thirty friends of Meadowbrook came out to celebrate our school at the Campbell’s lovely home where we raised over $250,000! We are especially thankful to those who this year took the first step in becoming philanthropists by making a gift to the Meadowbrook Annual Fund. For almost a century, the Meadowbrook School has been committed to providing its families the finest elementary school education, but we cannot do it alone. Your unwavering commitment and generosity are essential to our ongoing success in fulfilling this mission. I look forward to your continued support. Thank you, Jeffrey W. Franz President, Board of Trustees The Meadowbrook School THE MEADOWBROOK SCHOOL Annual Report of Philanthropic Giving, 2014-2015 The Meadowbrook School is grateful to the following individuals and organizations who made gifts to our school from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. Among the most generous benefactors to Meadowbrook School over its nearly 100 year history, Mrs. Jackson made us a philanthropic priority once her two grandsons, Christian ’20 and Holden ’21, joined our school community. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Mrs. Jackson, a Fulbright Scholar came to the T to B: Christian Jackson ‘20 and Holden United States in the 1950s and taught high school French in the Cheltenham Jackson ‘21 School district. Later, in the 1970s, she was an adjunct professor of French at Arcadia University. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen and earned two masters degrees and an honorary PhD. Mrs. Jackson, an educator, scholar and philanthropist, made Meadowbrook her home for the past forty years. Mrs. Jackson and her late husband, Eugene, donated the land near our school to Abington Township and we have been beneficiaries of the recently dedicated “Jackson Park.” Mrs. Jackson was a true philanthropist who gave not for the attention, but because her heart grew full knowing what an impact she had on others. She was aware her generosity helped improve the lives of others and nowhere more so than at dear old Meadowbrook. Mrs. Jackson’s gifting to Meadowbrook began humbly with a donation of art books to the library, and grew quickly and meaningfully due to her generosity and kindness. Her giving, coupled with that of her son, Geoff and his wife, Gretchen, has touched on almost every aspect of campus life, including new playground equipment and upgrades, the new granite sign at Hampton and Meadowbrook Roads, our new website, cable TV advertising, capital improvements, staff development and expansion, marketing materials, and the Hawk Talk community speaker series. The list is long and impressive, and we gratefully thank and recognize Mrs. Jackson and her family in this Annual Report of Philanthropic Giving. WHY WE GIVE Andrew & Karin Pitcairn, Parents of Morgan Pitcairn, 2020 Why We Give: Andrew & Karin Pitcairn Gratitude is the word that comes to mind when we think of the Meadowbrook School. Gratitude for the staff, faculty and amazing education that Meadowbrook provides to every child that walks through their doors from the first day of school through graduation. We were fortunate enough to find this gem of a school while our daughter, Morgan, was still in Nursery School. One visit and we immediately knew this was the right place for our family, or perhaps we should say our daughter knew it was the right place for her! We visited just about every school within an hour of our home. Upon arriving and touring Meadowbrook, we asked Morgan what she thought of all the schools and which was her favorite. Without hesitation she yelled “Meadowbrook!” The warm welcoming environment, from the faculty to the dedication of every staff member, is nothing short of a tremendous school experience. Each morning our daughter is so excited to go to school and this is a direct result of what the teachers pour into every student that enters their classroom. They help them learn in a safe and loving environment. The teachers see how each child learns and specializes on that. They teach to the individual student- not just the class as a whole. Students excel when they are empowered and our teachers lay the groundwork for a successful education. The Pitcairn family: L to R, Andrew Pitcairn, Morgan Pitcairn ‘20, and Karin Pitcairn Our gratitude goes beyond what lies inside- we choose to give financially by donating to the Meadowbrook Annual Fund which helps cover the cost of what it takes to run a private, independent school. By doing this, we want to encourage 100% participation to show support and help grow our school. We also donate financially in order to continue special programs being offered at Meadowbrook - this helps continue certain traditions that Meadowbrook has offered for the past 96 years. And last, but not least, we donate time. Whether it’s volunteering at a classroom level or fundraisers put on by the Parents of Meadowbrook, ultimately, our goal is to help Meadowbrook thrive. Why do we choose to do this? Because Meadowbrook gives our children more than the average education. We want to give back to what has been so lovingly given to our daughter. Meadowbrook is more than just a school- it’s a family that is dedicated to helping our children become the best people they can be inside and outside of a classroom. Morgan Pitcairn ‘20
