MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY
Presented by retired Public Affairs
Officer, Ned Sledge
Many of you know that I have been traveling a lot lately,
both for pleasure and for business, and in fact I am writing
this article now at 32,000 feet and just saw the Mississippi
River slip underneath the left wing.
March 20th
Meadowbrook Clubhouse
Terrace Room
I understand from the few reports I did get that you all had
a marvelous time (at our February event) and judging from
the sales figures, many of you really liked the wines!
WOW. We killed our past records…thank you all! Although
I do not benefit from it personally, I get the satisfaction of
knowing that all of you marvelous people have a growing
passion for good wine. That makes me really happy to
have been a part of your growth as a good educator.
Social Gathering: 5:30 P.M.
Presentation: 6:30 P.M.
This event is sponsored by Keith
Burford and John Sarrett of:
Virginia Asset Management, LLC.
To wrap up this installment of Club de Vin news I close
with these parting thoughts…

I hope to have the final requirements for the Wine
of the year award to share …

But the first one is …from time to time I will give a
pop quiz and anyone who answers correctly will
win some extra corks (that is to say our point
system i.e., 1 point = 1 cork)

POP QUIZ ANNOUNCEMENT –Last month I sent in
a question to the winemaker…for all who can
correctly repeat the question and the answer, I
will award an extra two corks…all submissions
must be on a 3X5 card printed in blue pen. HINT:
Kathy Hennigan posed the question in my name.

You will want to add this information to
your “tool kit” for surviving and thriving
while facing life’s later challenges.

Wings and Things
Finally, until we meet again, I ask that as you all sit
at your table, please lift a glass and say a little
prayer for fellow member Terry who has been
undergoing chemo and radiation therapy and at
this point I am sure he is wondering which is
worse the cancer or the treatment…
You go big guy, with God’s help you are going to
beat this!

Spring Golf Tune-Up - $15 for 20 minute session
By Appointment with Mike at Meadowbrook
It’s been an unusually cold and long winter. Most people have not played golf for 2 months or more. It’s a great time to
establish new golf habits. Get started with a 20-minute “Tune-up” from Mike. He’ll check your fundamentals which are
grip, stance and ball position. Once these fundamentals are in place, building a better golf swing is just around the
corner. To build that better swing, private instruction is recommended every one or two weeks.

All great ways to have that “finely tuned machine” purring for the golf season! More information in the April newsletter.

Charlene says that what she really enjoys most about her club membership is the
relaxing times spent at the pool and the interaction with the ladies in the
women’s groups. Charlene has been very active in the Women’s Club and Ladies
of the Evening, holding several Committee Chair positions over the years. She
and her husband, Pete, even taught Ballroom Dance lessons to the MCC
members after they participated in and won several area exhibition dance
contests in the late 90’s.
“I have been very lucky in fostering many wonderful and lasting friendships thru
activities and participation in the Women’s Club,” she said.
Name:
Charlene Moss, 25-year MCC Member
Love for animals runs deep in the Moss
family. “Our slogan is ALL FOR THE
LOVE OF DOGS. My granddaughter and
her mother and stepfather rescue
cats.”
Charlene is a Virginia transplant, coming to us from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
She’s worked in a variety of industries, starting with the airlines, settling into
insurance claims, and even worked as a self-employed Property and Casualty
Insurance Adjuster for most of the 90’s.
But nowadays Charlene beats to a different drum as the President of PUGS U
Gotta Save, Inc., a 501(c) (3) non-profit dog rescue organization she founded in
2011 after working for another rescue organization for nearly five years. She says
she owes much of her success to her husband.
“Without Pete’s support and day to day help I wouldn’t be able to do it to the
extent of the involvement and committed time it takes to make it successful,”
she said.
PUGS U Gotta Save is actively seeking volunteers for their organization. Charlene
revealed that last year they found homes for 192 Pugs and Pug mixes.
“I love working with and learning about animals, particularly dogs,” she said. Not
a surprise, she says that dogs are the number one thing she can’t live without …
(that and chocolate and socializing).
Charlene’s fundraising effort to raise awareness of Pugs continues to grow each
year. She has also earned the support of area Veterinarian Hospitals and has
developed partnerships to provide dog owners discounts on treatments.
“I appreciate the kindness and professionalism of the staff when I schedule
fund-raising events at MCC,” said Charlene. “Everyone is so helpful and the
members generously participate for which I am truly thankful.”
With less than three miles between
her home and the front door at
Meadowbrook Country Club, it was
easy for long-time club member,
Charlene Moss, to adopt the “club”
as her home away from home.
Charlene and her husband, Pete,
have been “true-blue” members for
nearly 25 years and enjoy all the
amenities the club.
Charlene revealed that her second passion just might be Bridge. “I love, love,
love to play Bridge with the ladies,” she said. Although she had never played until
she took a class taught by Ali Lenhart and Sue Lofquist. After that, she was
“hooked”.
In addition to Bridge, her Pug mission, and swimming, Charlene loves reading
and cooking, and is very active in her church, where she volunteers to support
the Library, Wednesday Night Suppers, History and serves as an Adult Sunday
School Secretary. I’m sure everyone is wondering, Charlene, do you ever SLEEP?

then felt less than satisfied? This happens because what
you are really seeking is the “feeling” associated with
achieving that goal. For instance, if your goal is to lose
20 pounds, you believe you will feel sexier, healthier, or
more attractive 20 pounds lighter. If you look at your
goals from this perspective, the goal itself is arbitrary. It
is actually the “feeling” that is your true goal.
So, when you are about to slack off, think of how you
want to feel. Your success is guaranteed if you allow the
desired feeling to be your motivation for taking action.

Golfers always want to prevent injury, especially in
the middle of a round or tournament. Massage
therapy, for golfers and other athletes, has become
important to use on a regular basis. It can help
maintain muscles, such as the shoulders, back and
arms, and massage therapists have come to believe
this type of therapy gives an extra edge. There are
various types of massage therapy; however, sports
massage therapy is not one that is usually
considered for relaxation. It's about preventing or
fixing an injury. Though golfers use it for injuries, it
can relax tense and tight muscles.
Golfers injure their backs, shoulders and hips more
than anything else while playing. Muscles tear
during exertion, and then they go into a recovery
and rebuilding phase. Massage helps dilate blood
vessels and stretches them, allowing nutrients to
pass through more freely, helping the athlete heal.
Massage therapy helps keep the body in better
condition, helps prevent future injuries and helps
keep muscles flexible, but still strong. Massage
therapy is felt to help boost performance and
extend the longevity of an athlete's career, helping
athletes play a sport longer. Excerpted from Golf Link.

What’s new?
RAMS
CHARTER: RAMS JUNIOR GOLF FUND
Since Mother Nature has been less than cooperative
recently, the Election of Officers for the coming year was
held at the dinner meeting on January 31.
FUND NAME: RAMS Junior Golf Fund
PURPOSE: The sole Purpose is to support Junior Golf.
Pete Miller replaces Ben Thorp President; Buddy Bennett
replaces Pete as Vice President; Charlie Fagan remains as
Treasurer, and Jim Hufschmitt remains as Secretary. Glynn
Soyars (Sunshine Committee), Dave Ellett (RAMS activities
and committee liaisons), Bob Bouse (Communications and
Membership), and Howard Bareford (RAMS trips) remain
as chairpersons of their committees. Dick Walsh will
replace George “Captain” Kirk in making up the teams for
Thursday Golf and the Pinehurst trips. Carrol Cox heads up
our new position for the RAMS Junior Golf Committee.
Definition: A Junior Golfer is the son/daughter or
grandson/granddaughter of a Meadowbrook/Chesdin
member. The 6 to 18-year-old Junior Golfer also calls
Meadowbrook/Chesdin his/her home course and
frequently plays there.
USE OF FUNDS: The use is to be recommended by the
MCC Head Golf Professional.
APPROVAL: Recommendations will be approved,
modified or denied by a majority of the Executive
Committee which consists of the President, Vice
President, Treasurer and Secretary.
Have you paid your dues yet? As of February 6, only 37%
of our members have paid this year’s dues. Give your $5 to
any RAMS Board member, and don’t forget to have them
record your payment.
LOCATION OF FUNDS: The funds will be held in the
RAMS account and will be a line item in the
Treasurer’s Report.
When play begins in the spring, the RAMS are planning to
start up a 9-Hole Golf Group to play in conjunction with our
regular Thursday play. Please contact Dave Ellett or Dick
Walsh in person or by internet if you would be interested
in playing with this group.
SOURCE OF FUNDS: The RAMS will continue to
sponsor fund raising events and welcomes others to
do so as well. Donations can come from any source as
long as proposed restrictions do not violate this
charter.
There are still a few openings for the spring Pinehurst trip.
Guests who are non- RAMS may take the trip with us
permitted they are invited by a RAMS member. Should you
invite a non-RAMS (invitees do not have to be MCC
members), please contact Howard Bareford so he may get
them the information on pricing, etc. Remember that
payment in full must be made by April 1. Make checks
payable to the RAMS with “Pinehurst” recorded on the
memo line.
FUND FUTURE: In the event the RAMS organization
ceases to function, the last Executive Committee will
recommend the successor of the fund.
If you would like to support Junior Golf and donate to
this worthy cause, contact the RAMS.
For those who would like to make a donation to the
Gillette Garden as requested by the Thorps, make your
check payable to “Gillette Garden” and leave in the
Garden’s mailbox in the office. You may also wish to
record “memorial” on the memo line.
On March 27, we again venture out to Jefferson-Lakeside
for a rematch and a chance to bring the plaque back to
MCC. Sign up in the Pro Shop if you plan to play in this
match.
Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!"
