Annual Review
The Annual Review 2014 125 years of inspiring musical achievement Section 1 Chief Executive’s statement 2014 was ABRSM’s anniversary year and there was much to celebrate. We have been providing high-quality music exams for 125 years. These exams are trusted by people all over the world, offer a clear framework for musical progression, and help to motivate students as they learn to play an instrument or to sing. Importantly, over time, we have been reaching out to more teachers and learners with a wider range of assessments and resources. Last year we held over 630,000 exams and assessments, with almost half of those taking place in countries other than the UK. Musicians of all ages and abilities received scholarships and took part in sponsorship projects. Teachers developed their skills and understanding at our face-to-face events. And the next generation of performers and teachers benefited from our annual donations to the four Royal Schools of Music in the UK with whom we have such a close partnership. While celebrating the past 125 years we also looked to the future. We worked with key music education organisations on a major research project. Making Music explored ‘teaching, learning and playing in the UK’ and the results are now informing our own plans, and those of others. During the year we continued to focus on the development of new digital and online tools, and this is one way in which we are expanding our support for teachers and learners. We also began a thorough internal review, looking at what we do now and how we do it, as well as what we should be doing in the future. We will begin to see the results of this work during the current year. Having joined ABRSM in January of this year, I am writing this message as a relative newcomer to the organisation. But one thing I noticed almost immediately was the shared belief in the importance of music-making and learning, both to individuals and to society. This is something felt by the whole ABRSM team and by the teachers and candidates who use our exams. It also provides a great foundation for the years to come as we continue to serve the teachers and learners of the future. Through our #MyCertificate social media campaign, we connected with teachers, candidates and parents from around the world. Participants shared photos of candidates, young and old, celebrating their exam achievement. Each candidate who passed their exam during our anniversary year received a certificate featuring a special 125 logo. Connecting & improving We invested around £6m in scholarships, donations and the sponsorship of events and initiatives throughout the world. We also worked with key music education organisations in the UK to conduct the Making Music research project – the results of which are being used to inform plans for the future of music education. During the year, we provided teacher support workshops to thousands of music teachers worldwide. These events were delivered by Lincoln Abbotts, Tim Arnold, John Holmes and our examiners. Page 3 / 29 2014 Review Section 4 A year in review February 2014 Music Education Expo The Music Education Expo is the largest music education event we attend each year, attracting over 2,000 delegates to the Barbican in London. At the event in 2014, our Chief Examiner, John Holmes presented a session on ways of using the marking criteria to the candidates’ benefit before, during and after the exam. Examiner conferences We held four conferences in Leeds, Solihull, London and Bristol to deliver continued professional development to our examiners. At each event we presented the results of our 2013 candidate satisfaction survey. Feedback from the survey identified key areas for improvement to the exam experience, which examiners then implemented. Representative training conference We organised a two day training conference for our Representatives from USA, the Caribbean and West Indies. This was held in Cancun, Mexico, and included sessions on customer service, effective promotion and supporting teachers, candidates and parents. Page 11 / 29 2014 Review Section 4 A year in review December 2014 Chief Executive retired Leslie East retired at the end of December 2014 after 16 years with the organisation. Leslie was appointed to the role of Chief Executive in February 2013. During his time at ABRSM, Leslie was responsible for a number of significant projects including developing the contemporary-music Spectrum series and Barry Cooper’s edition of Beethoven’s 35 Piano Sonatas, significantly increasing the provision of recordings for many of the instruments we examine, and enhancing our suite of exam publications and music support resources. January 2015 Welcome to our new Chief Executive Michael Elliott was appointed as Chief Executive, succeeding Leslie East, in June 2014. He officially took up the new role in January 2015. New resources for Music Theory We released Music Theory Past Papers and Model Answers 2014 to support students who are preparing for their Music Theory exams. Page 12 / 29 2014 Review Section 5 Supporting music education Sponsorship In 2014 we invested £6m in music education through donations, scholarships and sponsorship. We strengthened our partnerships with Music for Youth, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Mayor’s Music Fund in London. We also supported the National Jazz Youth Orchestra’s UK-wide outreach programme and sponsored the annual Music Mark conference; the Sing Up Music scheme and the One-Handed Musical Instrument Trust, a charity aiming to remove the barriers to music-making faced by the physically disabled. We also awarded four grants from our International Sponsorship Fund to recipients in Africa, Asia and Europe. In Ghana, the Mansek School used our funding to repair and buy instruments, to set up a teacher development programme and to employ additional teachers and accompanists. In Malaysia, oboe reed producers Borneo Reeds turned their attention to the professional development of wind players in the country. They created a competition which discovers talented wind players and helps further their careers. The Bombay Chamber Orchestra Society was also looking to support wind players, but in Mumbai. The group used its grant to expand its outreach programme, which until then had only provided opportunities for string and brass players and music technology students. And finally the Filarmonica P Mascagni di Anghiari in Tuscany used ABRSM funds to further develop its community outreach project. In addition to forming a small orchestra and children’s choir, the music school is sending teachers into schools to give individual instrumental and singing lessons. Page 13 / 29 2014 Review Section 5 Supporting music education Testimonials Stephen Chamberlain, NYJO’s Partnerships and Development Manager, said the ABRSM partnership ‘allows us to work in carefully targeted areas where we can make a high impact in our mission to reach and inspire as many young people as possible across the UK with a knowledge and love of jazz.’ ‘support from, and collaboration with ABRSM is extremely valuable to us. It strengthens our work in removing the barriers to music-making faced by the physically disabled.’ OHMI Founding Trustee, Stephen Hetherington, said, ‘Previously, our students used to practise in turns but now there are enough instruments available for group learning. The students are much more focussed because they see a change in the school which is making a positive impact in their music education.’ - Francis Fiifi Assan, Mansek School of Music. ‘Music is not only part of the winners’ continuous studies but very much a way of life. The prize plays an important role in their professional development.’ - Howard Ng, Borneo Reeds. ’Music is a significant part of the Bombay Chamber Orchestra Musicians’ lives. They devote so much time to play for and the funding helped expand the reach of the orchestra.’ - Jini Dinshaw, the Bombay Chamber Orchestra. ‘Music is fun for the students! It provides them with rewarding and new experiences – performing in public, learning new skills and building relationships, to name but a few.’ - Joanna Harvey, Head of Music at P. Mascagni of Anghiari. In partnership with the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, ABRSM has become a trusted provider of high-quality music assessments which are recognised for their ability to motivate and inspire learners of all ages and abilities. But the positive impact of ABRSM’s work goes beyond exams. As a charity, we invest around £6m in music education annually in both the UK and abroad. We provide funding to the Royal Schools and scholarships for their most talented students. We sponsor a huge range of music education projects, from youth orchestras and community schemes to instrumental repair and teaching programmes for underprivileged children. We offer resources and guidance to anyone wishing to develop their musical ability. All that we do is underpinned by our beliefs in the value of music-making, the importance of progression in that activity, and the need to create opportunities for more people to benefit from these experiences. Our 125th year was a time of reflection: on past achievements, our current position and on our plans for the future. With the support of our Royal Schools partners, we are bringing these plans to life by connecting to and working with those who share our passion for musical achievement. We are increasing our ability to influence and lead in the world of music education. We are developing our assessments and learning resources to meet the changing needs of learners, whatever their background, age or ambitions. And we are exploring ways to bring music-making to even more people. This is an exciting time for all of us involved with ABRSM, a time when our vision to inspire achievement in music and to do so in partnership with others feels more important than ever.
