The Promise
Today we live in a world o f our own undoing. We
pay lip service to com m unity service when we do the
copy, layout or photography, type or printing for
some wonderfiil freebie p ro je a that we took on solely
because the cashless client was only too happy to give
us our creative freedom.
Tonight, m em bers o f C onnecticut A rt Directors Club
review the collective efiforts o f its m em bership for the
twelve m onths past. A nd after the review o f the
judges’ selections, the ubiquitous awards, the joy of
winning (even if you d id n ’t get the O N E), and the
disappointm ent o f not w inning after all o f the
trappings, m any o f us will m ake a promise. However
silent, however personal, the prom ise will be, for
many pretty m uch the same. To try harder To strive to
imbue in our work greater life, w it and substance.
And next year we’ll cue u p again, waiting to see if
another selection o f experts think we got it right.
Heavy. O h please, deliver us from anything heavy
tonight, M r President. Let us escape into speaacular
type treatments, elegant art direction, exquisite
design and clear thinking copy We prom ise we’U
think all those heavy thoughts tomorrow.
But I’d like to ask you about another promise. The
promise o f a generation. The prom ise to look at life
and justice in a new way. The prom ise that we m ade
to ourselves twenty years ago (or longer) not simply to
add color to the lives we would lead, b u t ® really
shape those lives and the lives o f others. To m anifest a
true concern for one another and for this unique
speck o f cosmic dust.
LastJun e I asked each o f you to do one thing for the
club this yean M any o f you took m e u p on my
request. A nd things happened in this club. From
speakers to seminars to another sterling O ne Show.
Imagine, even for just a m om ent, w hat we could do,
collectively, if we just took it on ourselves to do one
thing for our children. A nd for our children’s
children. M ake that prom ise tonight, and keep it.
Phil Clem ent

■¥~^orty-five years after the company was formed
M it was, in truth, diversified Sojres of operations
X revolved loosely around a central office, but
essentially each went its own way Altogether, the
c o n ^ y listed hundreds of products: from home
applikices to oil field supplies, from air conditioning to
conveyor belts, from hospital beds to rubber boat
bumpers, from farm implements and pumps to plastics
and transmissions.
Sales volume rose steadily but not spectacularly
So did profits.
Then the company began to wonder whether all
that growth had been ^ x )d
It found that much of it was not— that growth for
the sake of growth, that product lists valued mainly for
length, had not necessarily been profitable.
The company began to chan^.
In its first four decades, many enterprises had
been absorbed none had ever been disposed of. It was
an emotional wrench when an appliance division tliat
had lost money was sold ott But that broke the ice, and
the company took a hard look at itself for the first time.
