Let your
imagination
wander for
a moment.
Picture how different our community would
be if hunger did not exist. If children did
not have to go to bed without dinner. If
over-worked parents did not have to wait in
line for food stamps. If lonely senior citizens
did not have to wonder where their next
meal would come from.
attention to anything except his empty
stomach. But now that he receives a
backpack of nutritious food each weekend
through the North Texas Food Bank’s Food
4 Kids program at his elementary school,
his teacher says he has really blossomed and
participates more in class.
“[Being fed regularly] affects their
education, which affects their entire future,”
she says.
Imagine a single mother who evacuated her
hometown of New Orleans with her young
son after Hurricane Katrina.
Imagine…North Texas without hunger.
It’s difficult to envision what our
community would be like without as
prevalent an issue as hunger. In our 13county service area, 13 percent of the
population lives below the poverty level and
more than 43 percent of these are children.
Hunger affects everyone – from elementary
school students to working parents to senior
citizens.
Imagine a child who was once unable to
concentrate in class because of constant
hunger but loves school now that he receives
food each weekend through the Food 4 Kids
program.
Michael always found it hard to pay
shelter by the generosity of this community
and the Food Bank provided food to help
them get back on their feet. They were just
one of the many families the Food Bank had
the privilege of helping in the wake of the
Katrina and Rita disasters.
Imagine a lonely senior citizen who has
found both food and fellowship from
The Brady Center, a Food Bank Member
Agency.
Eugene has been married twice and has
lost both wives to cancer. He has cancer
himself, so he knows just how painful the
disease can be. At age 70, he’s on a limited
fixed income, so he needs a little extra help
with food. He’s so thankful for the food he
receives and the friends he’s made through
The Brady Center.
“I don’t know what I’d do if there wasn’t a
place like this,” he says gratefully.
Jasmine lost nearly everything she owned
and faced the daunting task of starting a
new life in Dallas.
“My school is gone, my work is gone, my
car is gone,” she said of the destruction.
But Jasmine and her young son were given
Those in need like Michael, Jasmine and
Eugene no longer have to imagine what
it would be like to have full stomachs.
Nourishing meals are a reality for them
because of the generous donations of
foundations, corporations, faith groups and
individuals who care.
Thank you for taking part in our passionate
pursuit of a hunger-free community.

North Texas Food Bank Annual Report 2006
Dear North Texas Food Bank Friends and Supporters:
Eating dinner together may feel routine for some families. Others find it
challenging to get everyone together at the same time with such busy schedules.
Either way, many of us take our meals for granted – it’s easy to do.
But there are thousands of North Texas families who don’t get to eat dinner
together every night. In fact, they don’t get to eat dinner at all.
A USDA study released in October 2005 revealed that Texas leads the nation in
the number of hungry families. An astonishing 1.3 million Texas households are
food insecure, meaning these families don’t have adequate access to food resources
during the year.
More North Texans need our help than ever before. These families need nutritious
groceries from our Member Agency food pantries. Their children need healthy
after-school snacks from our Kids Cafes. Their grandparents need nourishing meals
from our Member Agency soup kitchens.
There is a great need. But the generosity of foundations, corporations and
individuals like you ensure that we are one step closer to fulfilling this need. In
2006 the Food Bank was able to distribute an incredible 37 million pounds of food
for hungry North Texans – a significant increase from last year.
The gracious support of friends like you truly make it possible to “Imagine...North
Texas without Hunger.”
Thank you for being a part of this vision.
Sincerely,
Larry Lavine

Testimonial:
Robert
Robert is one of the many Hurricane
Katrina survivors whom the Food
Bank had the privilege of helping.
Robert was rescued by helicopter
two days after the storm from the
roof of his family’s apartment. He
was reunited with his wife and
two children in Dallas, but with
everything lost in the hurricane, the
family wasn’t sure where to turn.
“For a couple of days
after the hurricaine,
we were without food
and water,” he says.
But through the help of the Red
Cross and the North Texas Food
Bank, Robert and his family were
given nutritious food and temporary
housing to help start a new life in
Dallas.
The North Texas Food Bank had the unique
privilege of helping to meet the needs of
hundreds of survivors of Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita in the fall of 2005. The Food Bank
opened its arms to countless individuals
and families who had suddenly found
themselves homeless, as well as hundreds of
agencies and community volunteers.
Beginning with the day after Hurricane
Katrina hit, the Food Bank remained open
17 days straight. Over the Labor Day
weekend 832 volunteers helped box
and sort food donations. With the
help of these invaluable workers, we
were able to distribute an incredible
5,092,836 pounds of food to
hurricane evacuees, ensuring that
evacuees had hot meals and groceries.
The Food Bank offered more than just
food to hurricane evacuees. In an effort to
get families and individuals who survived
the hurricanes back on their feet, the Food
Bank helped them find temporary housing
through those of our 400 Member Agencies
that provide shelter.
To aid with disaster relief in the hardest
hit areas, the North Texas Food Bank sent
trucks of food to six other Texas food banks
and the Food Bank of Louisiana in St.
Charles. The surplus food donations we
received that we could not use went out
to many other food banks in the America’s
Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank
Network.
We were overwhelmed by the outpouring
of compassion from the North Texas
community in the wake of this disaster.
In addition to the time and effort our
volunteers provided, the Food Bank
received more than $1 million in donations
designated for our disaster relief efforts,
which continued for 45 consecutive days.
We are still serving hurricane evacuees who
have had trouble getting back on their feet.
One of the most generous donations to
disaster relief efforts came
from Oprah Winfrey’s
Angel Network, which
donated $1 million to
America’s Second Harvest
– The Nation’s Food Bank
Network. This gracious
gift allowed America’s Second Harvest
– The Nation’s Food Bank Network to
purchase enough food to support relief
efforts at five member food banks impacted
by the hurricanes, including the North
Texas Food Bank. Actor Jamie Foxx helped
deliver $200,000 worth of food to the Food
Bank and then to Katrina evacuees at the
Dallas Convention Center, which Oprah
featured in her September 9, 2005 show.
The North Texas Food Bank is grateful
to the many foundations, faith and
educational groups, corporations and
individuals who extended a helping hand
in the disaster relief efforts. Your gifts have
changed countless lives. Thank you.

The Interfaith Gathering brought
people from many different faith groups
and denominations together to express
their collective passion for a hunger-free
community on June 6. Hindus, Jews,
Muslims, Catholics and Protestants all
joined together for an evening of special
music, sacred readings and uplifting
interfaith messages. Four Food Bank
Member Agencies participated in the event,
and Jan Pruitt gave a poignant message
about hunger in North Texas.
KRLD Restaurant Week, in its eighth
year, was the most successful year to date! It
began August 15 and ran through August
21, with some of the 82 participating
restaurants extending the event to two or
three extra weeks. Restaurants generously
donated $6 from each $30 fixed-price meal
to the Food Bank, and more than 45,000
meals were served. At the conclusion of
the three-week-long event, $274,743 was
raised, translating into an incredible 1.64
million meals for North Texans in need.
Canstruction celebrated ten years of
engineering and architectural marvel this
year. Fourteen design and architecture
firms constructed larger-than-life creations
from nonperishable food items, which
were on display at NorthPark Center from
August 27 through September 11. All
food items were donated to the Food Bank
at the event’s conclusion, and this year’s
Canstruction brought in 58,642 pounds.
Our sincerest thanks to this year’s talented
participants: The Beck Group, BOKA
Powell, CCRD Partners, Gensler, Gresham
Smith & Partners, HDR, Inc., HKS, James
Harwick & Partners, Jonathan Bailey,
LA Fuess Partners, Merriman Associates,
Page Southerland Page, three, and Tarrant
County Community College.
It’s a Fair Deal at the State Fair of Texas
and sponsored by Kroger proved to be
more than just a fair deal for North Texans
– it was a hunger relief effort and a great
volunteer opportunity. From September
24 through October 17, fairgoers received
discounted admission prices for bringing
three canned food items for the Food
Bank through Kroger’s It’s a Fair Deal
Wednesdays. Fairgoers also received
discounted admission prices on opening
day for bringing a 20 ounce Coca-Cola
product to donate to the Food Bank.
We’d like to thank the following groups
for volunteering their time and efforts to
collect food items and Coke products:
Lockheed Martin, East Gate Baptist
Church, Coca-Cola, Walden Preparatory
School, Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc.,
MBNA, Alcoa, Perot Systems, Delloittr &
Touche, Ford Motor Credit, Capital One,
Medical Center of Plano, Grant Thornton,
Phi Delta Kappa, The Hope Center,
Operation Blessing, Sharing Life, Aetna,
Starbucks Coffee, EDS, and Extended
Faith.
Slam Dunk Hunger made a big impact on
hunger relief in North Texas this year. At
the Dallas Mavericks home game November
21, Mavs players Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry
and Marquis Daniels teamed up with Dave
& Busters, CBS-11, UPN-21 and the Food
Bank to bring in $51,762 for hungry North
Texans! Dave & Busters, Nowitzki, Terry,
and Daniels each generously matched all fan
donations from this event. Thank you to all
who participated.
The Whole Foods Giving Tree saw a
200% increase in gifts raised this year!
The campaign, presented by Whole Foods
Market, encourages customers to buy a
paper ornament to decorate the store’s
Giving Tree throughout the month of
December. Proceeds go to the Food Bank,
and customers have the opportunity to
donate in any dollar amount. This year’s
Giving Tree ran from December 1 – 24 at
six metroplex stores and brought in $64,654
– which will provide more than 417,924
meals for hungry North Texans!
Empty Bowls Presented by Tom Thumb
commemorated its seventh year on
February 24, 2006 with record numbers.
An unprecedented crowd of 1,200 gathered
at the Meyerson Symphony Center to
enjoy the savory soups, breads and desserts
provided by local restaurants. Local artists
donated more than 2,000 beautiful,
handcrafted bowls for the occasion. And in
its most successful year, the event brought

in $89,416 for North Texans in need. We’d
like to extend a special thank you to our
sponsors: Tom Thumb, Capital One Auto
Finance, EDS, Grant Thornton, Dave
& Busters, Mullis Newby Hurst, Dallas
Mavericks, and Post Apartment Homes.
Dallas Cowboys, Flavors from Afar, FORD,
Josh Goode Band, Landmark Security,
May Flowers, The Melrose Hotel, Richie
Humphreys, Josh Knowles, American Food
Service, Brinker International, Holmes
Murphy, and Miller Brewing Company.
Taste of the NFL – The Ultimate Dallas
Cowboys Tailgate Party Presented by
Lockheed Martin was an even bigger
hit the second time around. Hosted by
Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marcus
Spears and linebacker DeMarcus Ware and
owner and Executive Chef Kent Rathbun
of Abacus Restaurant, the event raised
$60,108 for hungry North Texans on April
23. Other celebrated chefs were on hand
for the party, including Abacus’ own Tre
Wilcox and Rick Griggs; Kevin Rathbun
of Rathbun’s, Atlanta; Jack McDavid
of Jack’s Firehouse, Philadelphia; Tobin
McAfee of Sir Edmond Halley’s, Charlotte;
Marc Cassel of Dragonfly, Dallas; and
Shin Tsujimara of Next Door Nobu; New
York. We have many generous sponsors to
thank, including: Lockheed Martin, The
Republic of Tea, PepsiCo, SKYY Vodka,
Freedman Foods, Whole Foods Market,
Abacus Restaurant, Davis Mountain,
Texas Department of Agriculture – Shrimp
Council, Schepps, Australia Agriculture,
Steve Connolly Seafoods, E & J Gallo, and
Andrews Distributing; American Airlines,
Corporate Image Works, American Ice,
Brinkmann International, C Image Works,
CAT Entertainment, ChefWear, Inc.,
Hunger Awareness Day Presented by
Albertsons provided many North Texans
from corporate, civic and public sectors
an opportunity to serve this year. More
than 230 hard-working volunteers helped
package the equivalent of 88,000 meals for
our neighbors in need on May 19. The Josh
Goode Band provided music and volunteers
enjoyed cotton candy while they worked.
An incredible $27,500 was raised from their
efforts! We would like to thank our generous
sponsors: Albertsons, Credit Suisse First
Boston, EDS, Lockheed Martin, Rent-ACenter, Southwest Airlines, and The Wise
Academy.
National Association of Letter Carriers
Annual Food Drive Locally sponsored by
Kroger was a great success in its 14th year.
City of Dallas residents were encouraged
to place nonperishable food items by their
mailboxes on May 13, which were then
picked up by their mail carriers and delivered
to the Food Bank. The drive brought in
89,439 pounds of food and $8,085 for
hungry North Texans – much of which
benefits children who receive free or reducedprice meals at school but can no longer
depend on this food during the summer.
Testimonial:
Irma
Irma and her husband have six
children. Right now her husband is
out of work, and it’s hard to make
ends meet.
Irma is so thankful for the help her
family has found through Duncanville
Outreach Ministries, one of the Food
Bank’s 678 feeding and education
programs. Through this program,
Irma is able to take home nutritious
groceries for her children, which
makes a big difference.
“We are very thankful
for the assistance,”
she says.
The generous support of foundations,
corporations and individuals who
care ensures that families all over
North Texas, just like Irma’s, will have
enough to eat.

North Texas Food Bank Annual Report 2006
Charitable Produce Center Founded
in 1994 with Louise Gartner’s vison, the
Charitable Produce Center was designed
to transform the large amount of waste in
the fresh produce market into a source of
nourishment for hungry North Texans.
The Food Bank extended this concept in
1999 with a grant from Kraft Foods, Inc.,
by developing the Rural Produce Initiative
to give fresh produce to Member Agencies
outside of Dallas County each week. In
fiscal year 2006 the program provided more
than 3.3 million pounds of produce to

Program In 2000, the North Texas Food
Bank became the first Commodities
Supplemental Food Program (also known
locally as People and Nutrition, or PAN)
distributor in Texas. The program provides
surplus USDA commodities for Dallas
County residents who meet certain
requirements, such as being 60 years old
or older, a child under six not receiving aid
from WIC (Women, Infants and Children
Program) or a pregnant or postpartum
woman not receiving assistance from WIC.
Each month, 7,309 participants receive
an estimated 25 pounds of surplus USDA
commodities at 108 PAN distribution sites
in Dallas County. PAN is a partnership of
the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Texas
Department of Human Services, Catholic
Charities of Dallas and the North Texas
Food Bank.
Community Kitchen The Community
Kitchen began as a North Texas Food Bank
pilot program in early 2000. The mission of
the Kitchen is to offer Food Bank Member
Agencies nutritious, fully prepared frozen
meals to heat and serve to the hungry while
providing culinary job skills training to
disadvantaged individuals with an interest
in a food service career. Construction of a
new 3,000 square foot kitchen at the Food
Bank was completed in February 2002. The
kitchen provided an average of 10,000 meals
weekly in a variety of formats which are
then distributed to 60 Member Agencies,
including 10 shelters, 22 Kids Cafes and 30
food pantries. Up to 30 students, primarily
from the Texas Second Chance Program
in partnership with Dawson State Prison,
received food service training each year
while helping to prepare meals.
Food For Families Food For Families is a
cooperative effort between the North Texas
Food Bank and more than 30 Member
Agencies. Clients of the participating
Agencies are pre-qualified and are issued
a voucher for specific food distribution.
Clients meet Agency volunteers at a
specific parking lot at a certain time. A
drive-through line is organized and Agency
volunteers give food directly to clients from
Food Bank trucks. In fiscal year 2006,
more than 1.5 million pounds of food were
distributed to more than 16,000 families
and 66,000 individuals.
Food 4 Kids Elementary school children
on the free and reduced-price school meal
program often face hunger when these
meals are not available on weekends. The
Food 4 Kids program helps to solve this
problem by providing backpacks full of
nonperishable, kid-friendly food for these
chronically hungry children to take home
on Friday afternoons. The program has been
very successful in the 15 elementary schools
that currently participate. Approximately
400 children in the Dallas area received a
backpack full of food each weekend during
the school year.
Hunger Link Prepared Foods The Dallas
Hunger Link collects surplus prepared
perishable food from 50 donor hotels,
restaurants, cafeterias and other food
service kitchens. That food is then frozen
in disposable aluminum steam table pans
provided by the Food Bank. Specially
trained Hunger Link drivers then pick up

and distribute it to on-site meal programs
throughout Dallas. In 2005, the Hunger
Link program collected more than 556,035
pounds of food and delivered it to 22
Member Agencies.
Kids Cafe The North Texas Food Bank’s
Kids Cafe program began in 1998 as a way
to provide nutritious after-school meals
to children who may not have enough to
eat when they go home from school. The
Food Bank currently operates 22 Kids Cafe
sites with generous funding from Capital
One. More than 6,000 meals were served
each week to 1,600 children in Dallas and
Denton counties.
Main Program The Main Program of the
North Texas Food Bank gathers donations
of both perishable and nonperishable food
as well as nonfood items. These items are
then distributed to North Texas area food
pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters
and other programs for those in need. In
fiscal year 2006, the Food Bank’s Main
Program distributed items to Member
Agencies’ food pantries, serving 680,104
families. Area homeless shelters, day-care
centers, soup kitchens and other facilities
provided 6,051,521 on-site meals and
snacks to the hungry in our community.
Nutrition Education/Operation Frontline
Since 1996 the North Texas Food Bank
has partnered with Share Our Strength,
a national anti-hunger, anti-poverty
organization to offer Operation Frontline
(OFL). Through direct outreach to clients
at Member Agencies, Operation Frontline
promotes short and long-term solutions to
hunger by providing individuals, parents
and children with the skills they need to
make healthy, economical food choices.
Culinary professionals, nutritionists and
food enthusiasts volunteered more than 700
hours of their time to teach low-income
participants the basics of healthy cooking,
nutrition, food budgeting and food safety.
More than 200 participants were served
through 19 six-week classes, and 2,281
adults and children were served through
111 workshops. In total, 2,494 participants
received nutrition education through
Operation Frontline classes, People and
Nutrition (PAN), Kids Cafes, and various
other workshops and family events.
Texas Second Chance In 1997 the North
Texas Food Bank formed a collaborative
partnership with the Texas Department
of Criminal Justice. Texas Second Chance
allows selected prison confinees to volunteer
at the Food Bank up to four days a week.
As volunteer laborers, they receive job skills
training in receptionist work, warehousing
and food service. This training vastly
improves their ability to successfully
reintegrate into the community. Last year
participants in the Texas Second Chance
program provided more than 20,000 hours
of community service for the Food Bank.
Testimonial:
Mary
Mary is 63 years old and lives alone.
Her only income for the past year has
been a small Social Security check. It
just isn’t enough to pay for expensive
utilities and buy food. Although she’s
at retirement age, Mary has even been
looking for a new job to help put food
on the table.
“Thank you, and God
bless you!” she says
genuinely to those who
support the work of the
Food Bank.
But thanks to the Central Dallas Food
Pantry, a Food Bank Member Agency,
Mary has found help so that she
doesn’t have to worry about choosing
between utilities and food. The food
pantry serves hundreds of North Texas
seniors and families each day, providing
them with nutritious groceries from the
North Texas Food Bank to help them
when they need it most. Mary says the
food makes a big difference in her life
– and she’s so grateful.

IMAGINE
North Texas without hunger.
The North Texas Food Bank seeks to eliminate Hunger by distributing food and grocery products through a network of
nonprofit organizations while providing education and increasing community awareness on the issues of Hunger.
