Page Two May 8, 2016 SHARINGS FROM THE PASTOR Happy Mothers’ Day to all the women of our parish who rightfully deserve that title. I say this because there are any number of ways in which the term “mother” is used that do not pertain directly to a biological relationship. The extended application deservedly goes to anyone who has given life and nurturing to others. This obviously includes adopted relationships as well as less formal and legal relationships where great love and care is given to others. This connection with mothers and caring is, of course, the reason for Catholic Charities having selected Mothers’ Day so many years ago as the appropriate day for its annual appeal. This year presents us with an even more urgent need because of the juvenile antics of our state legislature and chief executive officer. You may have read a few weeks ago that some of the social care agencies in the state have been forced to curtail their services. One major church welfare system has been forced to cease operation entirely. Catholic Charities of Chicago has been able to keep operating in no small part because of the generous contributions of parishes like ours each year. It is one of the appeals that you very generously respond to and I want again to commend you for your generosity and concern for those who truly suffer in our society for lack of resources and opportunities. The sad fact, however, is that even with so much effort and with such a range of services, many people still go without basic human needs. It is one of the challenges of being a democratic society for us to keep demanding of our elected officials that they elevate the needs of the poor to a higher level of priority in the budgets of all the public bodies, from the lowest to the highest. While this often faces great opposition because of the many needs of our citizens and the limitations of resources, we need to keep these issues in the public eye. Along with this, we can keep watching for ways to goad our elected officials into being more efficient and economical in funding the systems that respond to all these needs. I wish I could be clearer about how this can be done, but it is not my field of expertise. Today is also the forty-second anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. My classmates will tell you that it was a cold, rainy day. I am writing this column too far ahead of the day to know what is being forecast for May 8. Like I said two years ago at the fortieth anniversary, “I don’t know where the time has gone.” I usually tell people that I tend to blame this on the metric system, because it seems to me that after “they” tried to get us off gallons and quarts and onto liters and so on, that things have gotten out of hand. This is also how I explain the fact that my nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews keep getting older while I don’t. Although I do have to admit that it is getting more difficult to deny the aging process than it was even a few years ago. But I digress. This is also the day we celebrate “Ascension Thursday.” Because the Book of the Acts of the Apostles has the ascension take place forty days after Easter Sunday, the event has been celebrated on Thursday for quite a few centuries. However you may recall that a few years ago the American Bishops Conference decided to offer the option of transferring the feast to the next Sunday. The Archdiocese of Chicago was one of the dioceses that made the change and here we are. However, not every diocese make the change and so our missalettes have to allow for both options, which can create some confusion in the pews. The Ascension reminds us that Jesus had to return to the Father so that he could send the Holy Spirit on the Church. Each succeeding generation has enjoyed the guidance of the Holy Spirit, but not always in an eager way. The direction of the Spirit is not always the one that we would choose for ourselves. However, it does allow us to be deliberate in our attempts to be authentic disciples of the Lord. This is why we need to keep challenging ourselves to be more active in the world around us. It is not for us to keep looking into the sky and wait for Jesus to return. Rather we need to be active in helping our world to be ready for that second coming. Father Pat Page Three THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD May 8, 2016 God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; the LORD, amid trumpet blasts. — Psalm 47:6 Jubilee Year of Mercy Between Ascension and Pentecost, the apostles “devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women and Mary the mother of Jesus” (Acts 1:12–14). Mary’s presence at the center of the disciples’ circle of prayer provides “a source of comfort and strength,” says Pope Francis, for Mary’s “entire life was patterned after the presence of mercy made flesh.” At the foot of the cross, Mary witnessed Jesus’ forgiveness of his executioners, a supreme expression of the depths to which God’s mercy can reach. “Mary attests that the mercy of the Son of God knows no bounds and extends to everyone, without exception,” Francis notes. Being able to live that unconditional forgiving mercy is the grace we pray the Holy Spirit to bestow. During these days of prayer before Pentecost, in this month dedicated to Our Lady, “may the sweetness of [Mary’s] countenance watch over us,” Francis prays, “so that all of us may rediscover the joy of God’s tenderness” (Misericordiae Vultus, 24). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. SECOND COLLECTION TODAY A Gift of Mercy: 2016 Mother's Day Appeal In this Year of Mercy, we can build a better future for those who are crushed by poverty or burdened by sorrow. Be an instrument of mercy with your gift to the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Appeal. Who needs your gift of mercy? Someone who gets up each day to go to work, but isn’t sure if he’ll be able to make ends meet. A formerly homeless woman preparing for her first job. A man who is conquering addiction. A teen-age mother completing high school, caring responsibly for her infant, and preparing for a selfsufficient future. An older adult with a fixed income who wants safe, affordable housing. Catholic Charities is here for anyone in need. Each year more than one million people in Cook and Lake Counties are cared for by Catholic Charities. They help one person at a time, treating each with dignity and respect. Your gift will touch every stage of life – from infants to seniors, to build a better life. Whether it’s to help one scared teenager, one homeless family, one homebound senior, or one veteran in need of shelter and employment, no one is turned away. To learn more about Catholic Charities visit www.catholiccharities.net. Page Four Psalm 1`39:13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. Today we remember and honor moms & the women who have made a difference in our lives: a grandmother, godmother, aunt, sister, foster mother, special friend and Mary, our Mother of mothers. For their patience, their love, their generosity, we thank God! And let us pray for the best gifts of all – safety, peace and hope for a future without violence in our homes, our streets and our community. Did you know…Each minute - Twenty-four people are victims of intimate partner violence, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Each day - Three or more women are murdered by their boyfriends or husbands on average, according to the American Psychology Association. Each month - The National Domestic Violence Hotline receives an average of 22,000 calls. Each year - Over 12 million women and men are victims of intimate partner violence, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When we are silent, we allow domestic violence to be invisible. We undervalue and disrespect lives in our own community. This mother’s day, please pledge across the Chicago Archdiocese. I will: End the silence on domestic violence. Be violence free in all my relationships. Educate myself, my family and children about healthy relationships. In grateful acknowledgement of his years of service, you are invited to the Retirement Celebration of Rev. Patrick M. Tucker Sunday May 22, 2016 Celebration of the Holy Eucharist 12:00 PM Sacred Heart Church 8245 W 111th Street Palos Hills, Illinois 60465 Reception and Refreshments Immediately Following Msgr. James V. Moscow Center Page Five We acknowledge the women in our lives who are or have been our mothers. We also celebrate those wives, grandmothers, godmothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, and friends who have been like mothers to us. We pray for them this Mother’s Day, as we remember the love, kindness, and nurturing these women — young and old, living and deceased — have brought to our lives.
