James is a retired nursing home administrator and works parttime as a counselor for a local clinic. Debbie is a retired banker.

The Knox Group
“Realtors with a Heart”
Barbara Knox and her team at RE/
MAX Unlimited are determined to help
families find a home that is just right for
them and within their budget. She says,
“We want to help people buy homes, and
we don’t care if they’re [looking for a]
$30,000 or a $500,000 home.”
Barbara and her husband, Jack, have lived
in Edgewater for the past 25 years, and
Barbara has been with RE/MAX Unlimited for the same amount of time.
Starting out as a realtor in 1977, Barbara
moved around to different states before
settling in Madison.
The Knox team includes her son, John
Knox, Debbie Sullivan, and
Nancy McLaren.
John has been with her team for 19 years, has a property management group, and is
currently the broker for the Knox Group. Debbie has been a realtor since 1984. Nancy
is a realtor and now serves as the team’s office manager.
The Knox Group offers both buyers and sellers a wealth of information on their web site,
www.knoxgrouponline.com. Sellers can glean information about how to prepare their
home for market by clicking on the “Service” menu and reading up on the topic. Likewise, buyers can find everything from buying a home, taking on a mortgage, and owning
a home. Real estate investors can begin their research at the Knox Group’s site, as well.
Congratulations to Judy Sexton at 103

Barbara. Most of her family are long-time residents of Edgewater, including John and

Zoe Brings Happiness to
Everyone She Meets
René McCurry got her now 12-year-old Teacup Maltese, Zoe,
when Zoe was just a puppy. Zoe had been dropped off at the
vet’s office by a family who had purchased her for a 6-year-old.
The little girl felt threatened by the little puppy and the family decided they didn’t want Zoe. René says she rescued Zoe, as
soon as she heard what happened. “She is my little companion
now,” René shares. “She probably has more airline miles built up
than most humans!”
The Measure of Distance
Regulation golf courses in the United States are measured in
yards and have to be at least 5,200 yards in total length with a
minimum par of 66. Amateurs are encouraged to play from a
set of tees that will allow them to have fun and be challenged.
The individual’s handicap will also give a sense of what tees to
play from as well. Women and juniors are encouraged to play
from a distance of 5,200 to 6,000 yards, seniors from 5,600 to
6,300 yards and men from 6,000+ yards.

Zoe is a service dog to René. She loves to sit with René and
have her belly rubbed and give kisses. The two used to live in
New York City and René says that “spoiled rotten Zoe was the
Queen of the Upper West Side – or she thought she was.” René
continues. “She has the best personality. She brings happiness to
everyone she meets.”
Have a cute pet? Share your funny stories! To have your pet(s) highlighted in the
next available issue, email [email protected]. Dogs, cats,
horses, fish, birds, and any other type of animals are welcome!
With the help of technology in the golf business, we have range
finders and GPS devices that help measure distance between
different shots. Before these devices we used yardage guides,
sprinkler heads, yardage stones, and visual fairway references
like 150, 200 and 250 yard stakes.
Stepping on to a tee box we can find the yardage of that hole on a
stone or sign. This will help us determine the yardage to different
visual fairway references by subtracting the visual references (150
yard stake) from the hole yardage. A hole measuring 421 yards
will have a distance of 271 yards from the tee to the 150 stake.
I am a big fan of range finders because we can find distances to
nearly everything. GPS devices and phone apps are great references but it doesn't factor a hard number for distance to the pin.
Good luck with understanding distance. Contact Brandon Jones
at RTJ @ Hampton Cove 256-551-1818 or [email protected]

Tasty! LawLer’s Local BBQ Hits the Spot!
Edgewater residents recently visited LawLers Barbecue for a
homestyle meal of hand pulled pork, turkey and all the fixin’s!
LawLers menu includes a variety of tasty options, from barbecue sandwiches, loaded baked potatoes, fresh salads, barbecue
plates… AND kids options!
The pork stuffie potato with butter, sour cream, cheese, chives
and your choice of pulled meat was a crowd favorite, as well as
the three LawLers sauces – thick sweet rib sauce, vinegar-based
mild sauce, and the white sauce. The sauces perfectly complement the pulled pork, beef, and turkey, whether on a sandwich,
potato or a plate. LawLers also offers BBQ nachos – loaded
with meat, cheese and sauce – and a variety of side items,
including cole slaw, potato salad, green beans, corn on the cob,
chips, and Tasty mac & cheese.

Mom, I Can’t Sleep!
It’s the middle of the night, and your child comes in and says,
“Mom, I can’t sleep!” Again!
many sodas. Some medicines also contain stimulants which can
keep sleepy eyes wide open at bedtime.
What should you do? Go lie down with her? Hope that he
works out the problem on his own? After all, you know that no
one will be any good the next day without enough sleep!
If these simple lifestyle changes don’t seem to be working, be
sure to contact your pediatrician. Because everyone needs a
good night’s sleep.
UCLA Sleep Disorders Center makes several recommendations:
Source: www.sleepcenter.ucla.edu/body.cfm?id=60
Stick to a Routine. Work on getting your child to bed at the
same time every night, even on weekends. Begin lowering lights
in the house and encouraging quiet activities. Consider sending
your child to take a warm bath or shower, followed up by reading a Bible story and a non-scary bedtime story.
Wake Them Up. Likewise, set a consistent time for having your
child rise in the morning. Even on weekends.
Create a Sleepy Environment. Again, try anything to make the
hour or so before bedtime a time of calm relaxation. Some kids
find the warm bath time to be invigorating, while others find
it soporific. You be the judge. Turn off the TV, computer, and
other electronic distractions. Spend time with your child, rather
than using electronic babysitters, which aren’t sleep-inducing.
Shy Away from the Spooky. Learn from my ridiculous mistake
as a camp counselor one year: I allowed some 8-year-olds to tell
“spooky” stories. Yes, I should have known better, but instead of
being frightening, I thought the stories were just silly. Until about
midnight, when some of my little campers were in tears! What
may seem benign to adults may be very frightening to kids.
Squelch the Snuggles. Okay, so a nice pre-bedtime snuggle is
perfect; just avoid allowing your little ones to fall asleep while
you are cuddling, nursing, or rocking them.
Curb the Caffeine. I have noshed on chocolate before bedtime
and regretted it later. Chocolate, of course, has caffeine, as do
If you would like to honor your child or a grandchild on the Athlete of the Month or

NEW YEAR
NEW YOU
Make Your
New Year's
Resolution
Work For YOU
Old-Fashioned Vegetable Beef Soup
By N2 Staff Writer Elizabeth McCabe
INGREDIENTS:
1 lb. beef stew meat
1 onion
3 celery ribs
10 baby carrots (or a couple regular carrots)
2 potatoes (peeled if you like)
1 cup frozen corn
1 cup frozen peas
2 (14 ounce) cans diced tomatoes (I use salt-free)
3 1⁄2 cups beef broth (or 2 14-oz cans)
2 small bay leaves
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons olive oil (or any cooking oil)
4 cups water
2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
INSTRUCTIONS:
Cut meat into small, bite-size (1/2") pieces. In a large pot or
dutch oven, saute meat in 1 T oil on medium-high heat until
all sides are brown. Set aside on a plate. Chop celery, onion,
potatoes, and carrots into bite-size pieces. Saute celery and
onion in remaining 1 T oil until onion is golden (about 10
minutes). Add browned beef, water, broth, tomatoes with
juices, carrots, potatoes, corn, bay leaves and garlic. Bring to a
boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered until beef is almost
tender, about an hour. Add peas and hot sauce to soup. Cover
and simmer until beef is tender, about 30 minutes longer.
Serve and season with freshly ground black pepper, hot sauce,
or crumbled saltines, if desired.

but it can also help you make healthier choices over the long
haul. It’s amazing that people who write down what they eat
consume fewer calories than those who eat whatever they want.
With modern technology and apps of all sorts, you can count
your calories with ease. Research has also shown that counting
calories can help reduce the risk of getting type 2 diabetes.
SHED A FEW POUNDS
Consider losing 5 to 10% of your body weight. According to the
Diabetes Prevention Program, shedding this amount can help
you avoid getting diabetes. If you want to slash your risk further,
start doing some moderate exercise. Whatever steps that you
take this year toward your New Year’s resolutions, refuse to be
discouraged. Try and try again. Even if you have a bad day or
gain an extra pound, don’t give up! Keep your goals manageable.
Even if you lose one pound a month, that is progress! That’s 12
pounds a year. Considering that the average American gains a
few pounds each year, any weight loss is remarkable.
Don’t give up in February or March or even April; every day is
a fresh slate. So get moving! Make 2016 your best year yet to
become healthier. You’ll be glad that you did and your health
will benefit in the long run!
The New Year; it’s a fresh start. It’s a new calendar and a perfect
opportunity to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
Get Your
Life Back!
You may ask yourself, “What’s the point of a New Year’s resolution anyway? I never keep them, so why even make one this
year?” But a new year can realistically mean a new you. Yes, it is
true. With a little patience and perseverance, your vision for your
fitness goals can become a reality. The real question is, “How can
I be successful this year in adopting a healthier lifestyle?” Here
are a few steps to get you headed in the right direction:

REFUSE TO BE ANOTHER STATISTIC
Fifty percent of all Americans are pre-diabetic or diabetic. One
in three Americans has high blood pressure. Sitting for extended
periods of time every day can increase the risk for heart disease,
diabetes and premature death. But simply knowing these statistics
can motivate one to action. Make small changes to add up to lifestyle changes. According to a recent study, getting up and engaging in light intensity activity for two minutes an hour can have
a powerful impact upon one’s health, reversing negative impacts
from sitting. Take heed, all you cubicle dwellers! In fact, it can
lower the risk of premature death by a whopping 33 percent.
COUNT YOUR CALORIES
Before you put something in your mouth, consider the calories.
Not only can counting your calories reduce your food intake,

If your shrub is thriving in its current
location, consider the environmental
characteristics of its spot, such as the
amount of sunlight your plant receives
and what direction it faces, and seek a
new address for your tree or plant with
similar attributes. Tying a ribbon on a
branch and noting its direction before
transplanting is a handy tip for accurately
orienting your shrub in its new location.
After selecting a new spot, prepare for
move-in day by digging a hole that is at
least 50 percent wider than the root ball –
but no deeper – and moisten the soil.
Pa c k you r b a gs !
Your tree or shrub will have the best
chance of survival if you “root prune”
several months before transplanting to
create a more compact root system that
can be transplanted with the plant. The
“feeder roots” that nourish the tree are
at the ends of the roots, which are likely
outside the area you’ll be digging to form
the root ball. Severing the outstretched
roots encourages feeder roots to grow
closer to the base of the shrub, where
they will be enclosed in the root ball and
transplanted with the plant. Watering the
soil the day before transplanting is highly
recommended because it helps the plant
survive the shock of moving, and moist
soil helps keep the root ball intact. As an
added bonus, watering softens the soil and makes
it easier to dig!
Let ’s g o!
When you are ready for moving day, first tie
the lower branches up with twine to protect
them and keep them out of your way. Mark
the circle around the tree or shrub where
you plan to dig. A good rule of thumb for
measuring the circumference of your circle
is for every inch of trunk diameter, you
need a foot of root ball diameter. Then,
using a flat spade, begin digging
with the spade’s face turned
away from the plant. As you
continue to dig, start shaping
the root ball, preserving as
many roots as possible. Once
out of the hole, it is imperative
to keep the root ball moist –
but not saturated.
Time to un pack !
Immediately after transplanting be
sure to water thoroughly to eliminate
any air pockets in the soil. Be vigilant
about watering for the next year or
two, as newly transplanted trees and
shrubs do not have the root systems
to handle excess watering or drought.
Moving is very stressful for trees and
shrubs, but with careful preparation
and a little TLC, your plant can
enjoy its new digs!

HELP
WANTED:
How To Hire
The Best Contractor
By N2 Staff Writer Megan Weatherly
The contractor you choose to hire for your next home improvement
project can make or break your budget, schedule and the overall
value of your home. Before you hire a contractor, follow these six
steps to ensure that your project goes smoothly and the finished
product is something you’re happy with.
1}
ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS
The easiest way to find a good contractor is to ask your family, friends and neighbors for recommendations. You can trust
them to give an honest opinion about their experience; positive or
negative. If you’re new to the area and aren’t sure who to ask for
advice, websites such as www.angieslist.com will provide legitimate
reviews of many different contractors and the services they provide.
2}
MEET IN PERSON
Take the list of names that were recommended to you
and pick up the phone. Contractors should be willing to come
to your home to meet you, discuss the scope of the project, and
offer advice. This will give you an opportunity to make sure the
person is someone you feel comfortable around and communicate with well. At this point, try to narrow down the list of contenders to three in order to simplify the process.
3}
DO YOUR RESEARCH
After meeting in person, you’ll have some homework
to do. Look for examples of the contractors’ work online. The
internet is a great resource at this stage, as you’re likely to find
reviews written by past customers. Find out if the contractors
are well-established, licensed and insured.
4}
GET A QUOTE
Ask the contractors you are considering to provide you
with a quote for the job. Be sure that the quote includes the cost
23
of both labor and materials. Compare the quotes from each contractor and be wary of any price that seems too low, as that can
sometimes be an indication that a contractor is inexperienced or
desperate for work.
5}
MAKE A SCHEDULE
Once you decide who you’re going to hire, work together to
create a schedule for the project and for payments. This will help
keep everyone on the same page and provide realistic expectations of the length of the project. Most contractors will require a
deposit up front. Never pay in full before the project has begun.
6}
SIGN A CONTRACT
This contract should be professional and should protect both
you and the contractor from any unforeseen complications. The contract should include specifics about the work being done. It should
cover the contractors qualifications, warranty provided, work schedule, payment schedule and how any disputes are to be handled.
After your project is completed, be sure to review your experience online. Your input will help other homeowners make wise
decisions, and if your contractor does a great job, you’ll be contributing to their success!

HELP YOUR SPOUSE
Heat Up Your Winter
PREPARE FOR THE
By N2 Staff Writer, Tracy LaFon
Winter’s cold is here; it’s time to head to a place that is heating up, and there is no steamier location to travel to than Brazil. The country known for throwing the world’s biggest party
is gearing up for one of the world’s biggest events – the 2016
Olympics. Many, however, are already flocking to enjoy Brazil,
heeding the call of sizzling beaches, exotic rainforests and fantastical carnival celebrations. As the fifth largest country in the
world, Brazil hosts an equally enormous selection of things to
do and see.
RIO DE JANERIO AND CARNIVAL
Brazil’s shining star is Rio de Janerio, a city that hosts two world
famous beaches, an iconic 125-foot religious statue and a party
to end all parties. The Carnival, which begins five days before
Ash Wednesday, is a celebration that lives up to its reputation
and also sets the mood for festivals that continue throughout
the city all year long. Perhaps it is fitting that a city that lives to
celebrate is watched over by “Christ the Redeemer,” a colossal
statue situated high on top of Mount Corcovado. Made immortal through songs, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches are ripe
with sun, sand, beautiful people and iridescent turquoise waters.

UNEXPECTED
Article Source: EdwardJones.com
SAO PAULO
At the financial hub of Brazil is one of the world’s richest cities, Sao Paulo. It is a city thick with culture and tradition. The
architecture varies from a neo-Gothic Cathedrals and modern
skyscrapers, to a colonial church that was built for the priests
who settled the city in 1554. Tucked in the middle of all of this
is Ibirapuera Park, home to cultural festivals, various artists, a
music hall and museums. The city is proud of its unique culture
that is layered throughout arts, cuisine and nightlife.
When you think about your legacy, you might imagine providing for
your children or supporting a favorite charity. As you plan ahead,
make sure to consider the financial security of your spouse.
Here are some tips to help you develop a proactive strategy.
IGUAZU FALLS
Sitting directly between Argentina and Brazil is Iguazu Falls.
More than a million people visit the falls every year and many
return again and again because of its magnificence. Its size alone
is overwhelming; it is over twice as high as Niagara Falls and
three times as wide. Tucked inside one of Brazil’s exquisite rainforest, the surrounding land is lush jade and teeming with brightly covered birds, several species of monkeys and stunning flora.
MANAUS AND THE AMAZON
The most populated city in the Amazon rainforest is Manaus.
It is mostly accessible by boat or plane, and its remoteness is
what keeps it so representative of the cultural history of Brazil.
The city is a tourism mecca for a variety of river cruises, expeditions, jungle retreats and nature lodges. Here the Solimoes and
Negro rivers meet to combine into the Amazon. The Amazon
River and its basin are home to the largest and most diverse
ecosystem in the world. Adventures into this area are equally
diverse as companies offer packages featuring everything from
luxury cruises on the river and piranha fishing expeditions, to
canoeing and tropical tree climbing excursions.
Book your trip today; Brazil is waiting to heat up your winter!
Make sure both spouses understand the household's finances
In some relationships, one partner handles the management of
all finances. However, it's important that both partners are fully
aware of their financial picture, including:
• Keeping a record of all financial assets, including investment
accounts, life insurance policies and legal documents, and
detailing the location of the original documents.
• Ensuring you and your partner meet regularly with your
financial advisor so that both of you are on the same page
regarding your finances.
Make your income strategy flexible
You'll want to consider the impact of a death on your income,
spending and assets to make sure you can provide for the needs
of the surviving spouse.
For Income Needs:
• Outline your sources of income, and consider potential
tax changes.
• Consider delaying taking Social Security for the higherearning spouse in order to maximize the survivor benefit for
the surviving spouse.
• Look into life insurance or a single or joint life annuity to
provide a specified income.
For Spending Needs:
• List your household expenses, both fixed (housing, property taxes, utilities) and those that might decline due to the
death of a spouse (food, entertainment).
• Then review scenarios with your financial advisor to ensure
your financial assets and potentially reduced income can
support this new level of spending.
For Asset Needs:
• Review titling and beneficiary designations to ensure a
surviving spouse will not only have the financial resources
but also the liquidity, access and/or withdrawal privileges to
meet his or her spending goals.
• Determine if there is an asset, such as a business, that
the survivor may want or need to sell to provide for
income needs.
• If you have the possibility of a taxable estate, you'll also
want to consider with your legal and tax professionals
the trade-offs between a Credit Shelter Trust and using
portability provisions.
