The most ancient craftsmanship skills have deeply penetrated the life of
the Latvian and Lithuanian nations. Inspired by ancient history and the masters
of former generations, experts of many crafts on both sides the Latvian and
Lithuanian border make beautiful, practical things, which give joy to eyes and
soul. Weavers create patterned belts, national costume skirts, tablecloths and
towels, but masterpieces created by blacksmiths find their lasting existence as
elements in the door and window openings of dwelling houses and household
buildings, as the finishing elements of gates, or as fireplace accessory sets.
One of the most popular craftsmanship types in Latvia and Lithuania region
is woodcarving. Works of a religious or mythological character created in
workshops, plenaries and symposiums are becoming more common in nature
parks and routes, thus enriching the local landscape and inviting the imagination
of tourists.
A new impulse in the interaction between craftsmanship and tourism is
provided by the Latvia–Lithuania Cross Border Cooperation Programme
2007-2013 for the implementation of the project of “Cross-border network
of craft as promoter of attractiveness of Latvia - Lithuania borderlands/
Mid-Baltic Crafts”. As a result, five thematic tourism routes have been
developed, which within the borderland regions of both neighbouring countries
include more than 100 different craftsmanship related objects – crafts centres,
workshops, museums, exhibitions, saloons and souvenir shops.
Thus craftsmen can promote and implement their masterpieces, create
wide cooperation with neighbours, and increase their own and others’ profit.
Meanwhile tourists, depending on their interests, are provided with a great
opportunity to get acquainted with the cultural heritage of the two neighbouring
countries, to observe and to try for themselves different craft skills, to purchase
souvenirs made with love and warmth or useful household goods. It is up to
every traveller himself to decide which of the suggested routes to choose as the
main one, and how many and which attractions to visit. But what should be
borne in mind is that the craftsmanship products are truly unique.
Have a successful journey in the world of craftsmanship!
