Yolanda and Dexter Lewis, his mom and dad, enjoy their son’s beaming personality, but also have concerns, as Nathan has developmental delays and needs constant supervision. Support for Nathan’s overall health and wellness is part of creating a good life for him, and that includes access to health care. Nathan’s family did not seek services for the first nine years of his life because from the time that he was born, they made several major life adjustments to support their son. Yolanda gave up her substantial career in higher education to become a stay-at-home mother, and Dexter worked two full-time jobs for seven years to support his family. Prompted by an email from The Arc Greater Twin Cities, Nathan’s parents came to the conclusion that they needed to learn more about services available to support him. The Arc’s Advocates helped the Lewis family navigate health care options and obtain coverage for Nathan. “That email was heaven sent! I am working on completing my doctoral dissertation along with raising four kids, and it has been a piece of cake compared to the initial process of accessing health care without the support of our Advocate at The Arc. It’s the best thing that ever happened to us.” —Yolanda Lewis, Nathan’s mom Nathan was one of 180 people who successfully accessed health coverage in 2015 with support from The Arc’s Advocates, trained as MNSure Navigators. creating a good life 2 CREATING A GOOD LIFE 375 Individuals will live a healthier life with access to resources and health care coverage. 3 Planning for the Future “How can I help you?” is a question Abby frequently asks as she greets guests at a theater in Plymouth. The fact that Abby, 26, has a disability doesn’t get in her way of enjoying work and planning her future with one goal in mind—creating a good life. Abby and her parents, Ellen and Jeff Pearson, work as a team to learn about options in a changing environment of support for people with disabilities. Ellen and Jeff were looking for an educational advocate for Abby when they contacted The Arc Greater Twin Cities in 2001. The relationship that began with consultation on Abby’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) has expanded to include critical conversations about Developmental Disability screening and the waiting list for services. “For the first time in our lives, we feel hopeful about Abby’s future because of our relationship with The Arc,” — Ellen Pearson, Abby’s mom The Pearson family is learning about future housing options for Abby with their Advocate at The Arc Greater Twin Cities, helping Abby in developing self-advocacy skills along the way. Also on the agenda is exploring the FutureLife Options™ planning process offered by The Arc. The Pearsons appreciate that The Arc’s planning process is person-centered, based on Abby’s goals and choices for her future. 389 4 CREATING A GOOD LIFE Individuals and their families gained knowledge and experience in planning for the future. creating a good life 5 Using My Voice “I am more involved in things and have a lot more friends because of The Arc.” Tricia Bemboom lives in her own apartment and works at Wendy’s. She is an active member of her community. Transportation can be a problem, but Tricia uses Metro Mobility to get to work, go shopping and participate in activities with friends. She’s an avid bowler and enjoys travel, with visits to Graceland and the Panama Canal among her favorite destinations. Tricia values her independence and is proud of her accomplishments. “Lucky for me, my parents would not put me in an institution and kept me at home and raised me like my siblings.” —Tricia credited her parents Tricia also credits The Arc Greater Twin Cities for helping her develop relationships, build skills and gain confidence. Tricia is an active member of The Arc Greater Twin Cities Self-Advocate Advisory Committee, joining the group when it began in 2002. “Self-advocate” is a term used by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to describe someone who learns to “use their own voice” to communicate needs and preferences. Tricia advocates for herself and also helps others develop skills toward self-determination. Along with other self-advocates and The Arc, Tricia works to support the rights of people with disabilities by speaking in support for housing, employment, healthcare, independent living and more— all vital factors that contribute to a good life. creating a good life 6 CREATING A GOOD LIFE 1,100 People engaged in public policy with The Arc by inviting elected officials into their homes and through legislative visits. 7 The Impact of Advocacy A new accessible website offers clear navigation to information and multiple ways to contact The Arc.
