The Great Outdoors
Nestled between Oneida Lake, the Tug Hill Plateau and Great
Lake Ontario, Oswego County’s unique geography makes it a
perfect place to explore the great outdoors! We have thousands
of acres of state forests, wildlife management areas, nature
parks and environmental education centers to welcome outdoor
enthusiasts in every season.
With the highest recorded snowfall east of the Rocky Mountains,
the Tug Hill region offers exceptional conditions for skiing,
snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Our budding spring, warm
summer days and vibrant fall foliage are ideal for birding, biking,
camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking and exploring.

Birding
Diverse woodland habitats, pristine wetlands
and expansive shorelines make Oswego County
an excellent year-round birding area. Derby
Hill Bird Observatory in Mexico hosts raptors,
waterfowl and songbirds that soar above the
bluff overlooking the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. The Oswego
River Canal is home to many species, including the elusive osprey and
bald eagle. Further north, look for waterfowl and songbirds along miles
of trails on the edge of the Tug Hill Plateau. You’ll find many other birds,
including several threatened species in the wetland areas along the
north shore of Oneida Lake.

Ice Climbing
Ice climbing in the Salmon River Falls Unique Area in Orwell is allowed only
with daily registration. Each individual climber must fill out a form (available
on the “Ice Climbing” page at www.visitoswegocounty.com) and deposit it
in the registration box prior to entering the gorge. Registration provides upto-date information of climbers within the gorge in case of an emergency.
Climbers can access the base of the gorge by the Gorge Trail, which is
closed to all others from November 15 thru May 1 due to the potential
for high water or icy conditions. This trail is open only to registered ice
climbers.
Please be advised that this area is not regularly patrolled. It is recommended
that all climbers climb in pairs in case of an emergency or accident.
Oswego County is surrounded by water and has the largest
shoreline along Lake Ontario of any other county in New York. Not
only are the lakes and rivers breathtaking scenic treasures, but
they provide endless recreational opportunities. Boaters come
from far and wide to spend a day relaxing on Great Lake Ontario
or Oneida Lake. The more adventurous types can try their hand at
kayaking or rafting down the rapids of the Salmon River. The north
and south Sandy Ponds, the Salmon River Reservoirs and Lake
Neahtahwanta are great for jet-skiing or canoeing. Many enjoy
cruising through the locks of the historic Oswego River Canal,
perfect for boaters and paddlers alike. Others just like to swim in
our pristine waters!

Four Seasons of the
Oswego River Canal
Where to Canoe and Kayak
The Oswego River Canal played a colorful and vital role in the settlement of Oswego County and in the history of our nation. The word “Oswego”
is derived from a Native American word, “Osh-we-geh,” which means “the pouring out place.” Established as a port in 1725, Oswego is the oldest
freshwater port in North America.
Wonderful paddling adventures are abundant in Oswego County, where a large variety of rivers, lakes, streams and ponds offer endless opportunity
for paddlers of all skill levels. Look for remnants of the old canal and historic landmarks along the canal system, watch for bald eagles and heron along
pristine rivers and reservoirs, and don’t forget your fishing pole and tackle box for tremendous fishing opportunities!
The waterway was a strategic route for carrying supplies, arms and men during the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Barges
and packet boats traveled continually up and down the river, carrying farm products, commercial goods and passengers. Fugitive slaves used the
waterway as an escape route to Canada. Thousands of people had jobs in mills and factories along the canal.
Deer Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area, Richland:
Access from NYS Rte. 3 parking area. Deer Creek winds through
woodlands before it enters an extensive marsh on eastern Lake Ontario.
Look for muskrat, deer, beaver snapping turtles, great blue heron and
sandpipers.
Today, the Oswego River is used extensively for fishing, pleasure boating, canoeing and kayaking. The waters of the Oswego River provide an outstanding
year-round fishery for brown trout, salmon, steelhead, perch, carp, bass, walleye and other species, depending on the season. The port of Oswego
remains an international shipping port.

Sunset behind Oswego Lighthouse by Ray Grela
Diving Wreck of the Marykay
Scuba Diving
The Wreck of the Mary Kay
Constructed in 1957, the Mary Kay was a 55-foot, 35-ton tugboat powered by twin Murphy diesel engines. Just west of Oswego harbor, two 9-foot
waves crashed over her stern and filled the engine room. She listed and sank quickly.
The stern and mid-ships of the Mary Kay sit upright on the rocky bottom. The bow section lays on its port side.
The superstructure has crumbled and lays in a debris field immediately south of the wreck. The two propellers, bollard
posts, and twin diesel engines are exposed for inspection. Bass often school around the stern and eels can be observed during night dives.
Shallow depths and the absence of penetration areas make this a popular dive for newly certified divers. Experienced divers find the wreck relaxing,
allowing for detailed observation of vessel construction and longer site exploration, often not possible on deeper wrecks.
Diving is possible May through October. May to early-June and late summer are the best times to dive. The GPS coordinates for the Mary Kay are N
43.27.705, W 76.33.198. A maritime heritage educational guide to the wreck is available from the Oswego Maritime Foundation at (315) 342-5753.
The Wreck of the David W. Mills
At 5:30 a.m. on August 11, 1919, the 202-foot, 925-ton steamship David
W. Mills slammed into Ford Shoal, four and a half miles west of Oswego.
The David W. Mills has found a new calling as a popular recreational
dive site. Resting in only 12 to 25 feet of water, the Mills is a relaxing
adventure for divers of all skill levels. Because she broke apart during
a storm, the Mills provides divers with a look at how steamships were
constructed over a century ago.
The wreck of the David W. Mills can be found using the OMF Guide and
the NOAA Chart 14803. It lies halfway between shore and the green Ford
Shoal buoy. The boiler is marked as a boulder on the nautical chart. The
GPS coordinates for the Mills are N 43.26.630, W 76.35.089.
On a clear, calm day the wreck can be seen from the surface. Please do
not anchor into the wreck. The OMF Guide to the wreck is available by
contacting the Oswego maritime Foundation at (315) 342-5753.
DID YOU KNOW ?
Some historians estimate there have been more
than 160 shipwrecks off the coast of Oswego
County in Lake Ontario and several more in Oneida
Lake!

As the fishing capital of the Northeast, year-round fishing opportunities abound in the
waters of Oswego County. Anglers seeking that record-breaking salmon or trout, as well
as the ever-popular walleye, bass, perch, carp or other species, can expect to have an
enjoyable fishing experience. Prime ice fishing opportunities abound on Oneida Lake and
Sandy Pond during the winter months.
Widely known for its world-class fishery, the area also offers exceptional hunting and
trapping for whitetails, wild turkeys, waterfowl, pheasants, ruffed grouse and small game.
The Wreck of the Harborfest Houseboat
Harborfest ’93 was windy. Northwest winds kicked up 8-foot waves on Lake Ontario. A 32-foot houseboat was out on the lake that day. The little,
calm-water vessel didn’t stand a chance, and it foundered in 32 feet of water just west of Oswego Harbor. The two men aboard were rescued by the
Coast Guard.
During the first winter that the vessel was submerged, the cabin was swept away by ice and now lies in pieces to the east. All that remains is the hull
and outside railing. The houseboat is the new home of plenty of bass and perch.
The real name of the vessel is all but forgotten. Local divers began referring to it as the “Harborfest Houseboat” and the name stuck after it appeared
in a newspaper’s trivia article in 1996.
The GPS coordinates for the wreck are N 43.27.470, W 76.33.335.

Fishing and Hunting
Oswego County is surrounded by water! If you prefer a lake fishing
experience, troll the waters of Lake Ontario or Oneida Lake. If river
fishing is more your style, then take a trip down the Salmon, Oswego or
Little Salmon rivers. Oswego County also has smaller lakes and bodies
of water for calmer fishing such as North and South Sandy Pond, Lake
Neahtahwanta, Panther Lake and the Salmon River Reservoir.
For a complete list of where to fish and other fishing information,
download the Oswego County Fishing and Hunting Guide at www.
visitoswegocounty.com.
General License Information
Annual fishing licenses are valid for one full year (365 days) from date of
purchase.
While fishing in New York state, all persons – except those under 16 –
must have a valid license in their possession.
All hunters must have a valid hunting license in their possession. Children
12 and younger may not hunt wildlife.
Be familiar with fishing and hunting regulations. When you purchase a
fishing or hunting license, you should receive a NYS Fishing Regulations
guide and NYS Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide. For more
information, visit the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) Web site at www.dec.ny.gov/index.html or

Oswego County and its citizens played important roles in the abolitionist movement during the mid-1800s. Many became involved
in the struggle to end slavery through politics and by providing assistance to slaves fleeing the South through the Underground
Railroad. This extensive network includes 11 sites that have been honored with placement on the National Register of Historic
Places. Several houses listed here are currently private residences and are not open to the public.

American Legion Hall, Post #268, 69 W. Bridge St.
Artist Jennifer Hall painted these four 19- by 8-foot murals to honor
the U.S. military armed forces. Together, they hang on the south side
of the building which was built in 1843 as the First Presbyterian
Church. Later, as a post, it was named for William S. Monaghan, a
career soldier and World War I hero.
Vella’s North Shore Market, 103 NYS Rte. 49
This mural by local artist Robert McNamara covers the west side
of the supermarket and highlights the colorful history of Cleveland,
including the Cleveland Glass Works Factory.
Fulton:
Salvation Army Building, 62-64 S. First St.
This mural by local artist Ben Jerred is located on the south side of
the building in Fulton’s Canal View Business District. It celebrates the
city’s history by depicting life on the Oswego Canal and paying tribute
to the former L.C. Smith Hunter Arms Company.
H. Lee White Marine Museum, 1 W. First St.
This series of epic paintings depicts some of the most dramatic
moments in the history of Fort Ontario. These 6- by 20-foot oil-oncanvas pieces were completed between 1937 and 1938 by American
artist George Gray. Originally commissioned by General Leslie Kincaid
for the former Pontiac Hotel in Oswego, the works were later donated
to the marine museum.
Indian Point Park, NYS Rte. 481N
This 9- by 10-foot stained glass mural of famed artist Vincent Van
Gogh’s “Starry Night” is made from nearly 2,000 cut glass bottles. The
work is a community project sponsored by the CNY Arts Center and
led by local artist Leslie Paice.
Oswego East Side Fire Station, 35 E. Cayuga St.
The Oswego Fire Department was established in 1876 and this mural
covers the west wall of its east station. It honors the tradition of fire
service in the Oswego community, from the early days of horse-drawn
water pumps to the more modern fire engines.
Mexico:
The Palladium Times, 140 W. First St.
Created by artist Eliyahu BenYsrael in 2000, this mural is situated
in a park setting at the entrance to the building. It pays homage to
the early days of newspapers and George Barnard, the photographer
credited with the first ‘action news’ photographs. They were taken
of a fire in the Oswego grain mills on July 5, 1853 using a new
photography process known as Daguerreotype.

Quality Inn and Suites, 70 E. First St.
Set on the northwest corner of the hotel, this lighthouse mural
appropriately faces the Oswego River, welcoming vessels into the
harbor. Created by artist Jennifer Hall, it depicts the former Oswego
Inner Harbor Lighthouse which was built in 1837 and operated as a
beacon for maritime traffic for nearly 100 years.
Paul’s Big M, 276 W. First St.
Artist Dominic Catalano created this mural in 1998. It spans the entire
south side of the supermarket, showcasing the building’s original
function in the early 20th century. Built in 1906, it was once the New
York Central Train Station and operated until 1953. The following year,
it was renovated into the market that stands today.

Oswego Historic Mural Project. The largest and most complex of the

This Impressionist mosaic was created by student artist Wendy O’Dea
as part of SUNY Oswego’s “Art Attack” series in the mid-1980s. The
mural combines tile, mirror and painted areas to generate a burst of
kinetic energy and depict Oswego’s famous sunsets on Great Lake
Ontario.
SUNY Oswego, Tyler Hall, 7060 NYS Rte. 104
This series of abstract mosaics are located across the top of the east
wall of Tyler Hall. They were created from tile, mirror and paint to
create eye-catching images that delight and challenge the imagination.
SUNY Oswego, Rich Hall, 7060 NYS Rte. 104
Designed and created in the summer of 2004 by the SUNY Oswego
mural painting class, this mural is located in the front entry of the
building. It depicts the growth of business from agriculture, industry

infrastructure in practice today.

DID YOU KNOW ?
Oswego County is home to one of only about 400 drive-in movie
theatres still in operation nationwide. For more than 60 years, the
Midway Drive-In Theatre in Minetto has been bringing families and
friends together for a memorable and nostalgic movie-watching
experience. The drive-in hosts an average of 30,000 visitors each
year.
Brothers Ruben and Irving Canter opened the Midway Drive-In in
the summer of 1948. Nearly two decades later, A.T. Kolinski and
C. Girard took it over in the late 1960s. The current owner, John
Nagelschmidt, purchased the theatre in 1987. A former science
teacher, Nagelschmidt has had a passion for the drive-in since he
worked the concession stand as a college student.

Protect our Trees! Don’t Move Firewood!
New York’s forests are
under attack from a number
of invasive pests. By
transporting firewood, you
could be spreading diseases
and invasive insects that can
quickly kill many trees. Help
stop the spread of invasive
species and obey these
firewood regulations:
• DO NOT import firewood into New York State
unless it has been heat-treated to kill pests.
• DO NOT transport firewood more than 50 miles
from its source.
• DO buy firewood on-site at your campground or
locally; ask for a source receipt.
For more information about firewood regulations, visit
http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/28722.html or call (518)

Nine Mile Point Emergency
Notification System
Sirens have been installed in the 10-mile
radius of Nine Mile Point to alert the public of
an emergency at a nuclear power plant. If a
siren sounds for an extended period of time
(3 to 5 minutes), tune a radio or television to
an Emergency Alert System (EAS) station and
follow instructions. Boaters and people fishing
on the Oswego River and Lake Ontario will be
notified by the U.S. Coast Guard or Oswego
County Sheriff’s Department. Parks will be
closed immediately.
The sirens are tested four times a year. During
siren testing, if you hear multiple, repeated
activation of sirens within a few minutes, you
should turn on a radio or television and listen to
an EAS station for information.
People may be asked to remain indoors or to
leave the area during a nuclear power plant
emergency. If you are advised to leave the area,
please follow the instructions given on the EAS
stations. You may be advised to go directly to
the Reception Center at the New York State
Fairgrounds in Syracuse for registration or
radiation monitoring.
