101 Strings
Orchestra
Catalogue
“The 101 Strings Orchestra is one of the most
productive and reliable names in instrumental
easy listening music” (AMG review)
This ensemble, founded by producer/engineer
David L. Miller, was introduced to the public on
Miller’s Somerset label in 1957. Miller found a
way to present the sound and style of orchestras
popular at the time, such as Mantovani, by hiring
fine European musicians, and made the 101
Strings Orchestra into a brand name. The 101 Strings Orchestra recorded hundreds of albums, mostly
either around a specific popular or cultural theme, some well-known artist or songwriter, a TV or
movie theme, songs originating from a particular country, or recordings of popularly-known standard
tunes. During its evolution over the past 50 years, the sound of the 101 Strings has been built on a
reverence for melody, a simple and fresh production, and a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. The
original performances have been recorded under the most exacting audio engineering standards with
specially designed microphones. Countdown Media has re-mastered these sound recordings using
24-Bit mastering techniques, and digitized from the original tapes with state of the art equipment in
order to provide the highest quality standards.

Everest
Catalogue
The Everest catalogue is one of the truly historic,
ground-breaking music catalogues of the past
half century. Everest created a number of
historical sonic and music benchmarks during
its early history in the 1950s and 60s. Not only
was it one of the first “World Music” labels (predating such labels as Nonesuch) with its Olympic
imprint, containing examples of everything from
Portuguese Fado to “Flute Music of the Andes”,
but Everest was the first, and one of only two
labels (with the historic Mercury Living Presence to follow) to record in a 3-channel sound field,
mostly with the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, and New York Philharmonic (using the
moniker of the “Stadium Symphony Orchestra”, due to contractual obligations). Some of the famed
conductors active during the middle of the 20th century, including Leopold Stokowski, Sir Malcom
Sargent and Sir Adrian Boult, were responsible for these groundbreaking recordings, imprinted on
35mm video tape (also a landmark accomplishment, which would hearken the arrival a decade later
of the usage of 2-inch master tape for studio recording).
Everest’s wide-ranging repertoire not only included world music and audiophile Classical recordings,
but also some of the greatest names in Jazz and Blues, from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to
Billie Holiday and Ray Charles. These and other novelty recordings (including a great Swiss yodeling
album!) are descriptive of what has become a heritage audiophile and historically significant label,
for now and in the future.

Sun
Entertainment
Catalogue
The iconic Sun Records catalogue is now
available for licensing through Countdown
Media. The label’s impressive roster of legendary
artists that influenced American Music includes
more than 6,500 master recordings of the likes
of Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis,
Carl Perkins, Conway Twitty, Howlin Wolf and
Junior Parker, among many others.
The Sun Entertainment Catalogue contains
masters from the labels Sun Record Company, Plantation Records, SSS International (“Harper Valley
PTA”), Red Bird, Blue Cat, Blue Fox, and a few others. Founded by Sam Phillips in Memphis in 1952,
the Sun Record Company became quickly a home for many talented musicians of the rich and diverse
musical scene in and around Memphis at that time. Prior to the big Rockabilly & Rock’n Roll records,
Sun recorded mostly black musicians, for Phillips loved R&B and wanted to bring black music to a
white audience. Still, he was not limiting himself to one genre or style but recorded whatever he
thought people would love to hear, gospel, blues, hillbilly, country, boogie, and western. In 1954 Sam
Phillips found Elvis Presley who helped form the Sun Sound by mixing Country music with R&B. The
success of Elvis (his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor in 1955) attracted other great talent to
the label including Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. These four soon became known
as the Million Dollar Quartet. More legendary label mates include Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, Bill
Justis, Harold Jenkins (a.k.a. Conway Twitty) and other equally memorable musical talents who made
their way to the Pop, R&B and Country charts. Sun Records contributed to the rise and popularity of
20th century Rock’n Roll and influenced many younger musicians, particularly the Beatles.
In 1969, Shelby Singleton (former producer at Mercury) purchased the Sun label from Phillips.
Singleton merged his own labels into Sun International Corporation and started to re-release and
re-package compilations of Sun‘s early artists. John Singleton, Shelby’s brother and partner for many
years, oversees the business affairs of Sun today.
Countdown is proud to offer the master recordings of this renowned catalogue to its customers.
