Continuing to build upon a strong working partnership with our state Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) LifePoint, we began the year joining forces with the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) and created the South Carolina Registry Unites Business Support (SCRUBS) project. This project focuses on building workplace partnerships in South Carolina hospitals and their communities through the promotion of organ and tissue donation. The month of April brought forth a strong “call to action” as the nationally proclaimed Donate Life Month assisted our efforts with additional support from our State Legislation and other community partnerships. Moving forward into the summer, DLSC co-hosted with LifePoint, The Inaugural Linking Hands for Life, a gestural tribute to the continuance of life through organ and tissue donation with over 250 people in attendance. What a pleasure to witness the joining of so many hands of organ and tissue donor families, transplant recipients, people awaiting a transplant an friends and supporters of donation. As we entered into fall, the Donate Life Duel continued in 2010 between the University of South Carolina and Clemson University. Student groups provided volunteer hours and enthusiastic support hosting donor drives within their campuses marking the second year of this successful college campus challenge. Donate Life SC was honored to be selected as their charity of choice by Landon Powell, professional Major League Baseball player for the Oakland A’s and his lovely wife, Allyson. The Powell’s hosted the Inaugural Donors on the Diamond – A Family Evening at the Ballpark to Raise Awareness for Organ and Tissue Donation. Landon’s personal connection with organ and tissue donation, coupled by his passion for making a difference, made this a very successful and memorable event! Lastly, we assisted LifePoint in honoring a South Carolina man as one of 60 people who gave the “Gift of Life” and were represented in “floragraphs” on the Donate Life America Rose Bowl Parade float. A strong future awaits Donate Life South Carolina as we remain focused on our mission by holding strong to our vision, “To work collaboratively with partnerships in this state and the nation so that all individuals who are in need of a transplant receive one.” Best wishes, Tracy L. Armstrong CEO/Executive Director – Donate Life South Carolina Our MissiOn: Is to promote organ and tissue donation for transplantation and provide patient assistance for South Carolina recipients. Donate Life South Carolina established and maintains the SC Organ and Tissue Donor Registry Our VisiOn: is to work collaboratively with partnerships in this state and the nation so that all individuals who are in need of a transplant receive one. Twenty-two year old Darwin Rivera of Greenville, South Carolina died on August 4, 2010 after a tragic motorcycle accident. The opportunity to honor him with a floragraph in the Rose Parade was made possible though the kindness of a sponsorship from Mendez National Institute of Transplantation in Los Angeles, California. In early December, approximately 50 of Darwin’s relatives and friends gathered at a private ceremony in Greenville, S.C., as some helped put the finishing touches on Darwin’s floragraph. LifePoint and Donate Life South Carolina hosted the floragraph event at the Bounce Marketing Agency which attracted several TV stations and the Greenville News. Over 25,000 brochures were distributed statewide to churches in honor of Donor Sabbath. Volunteers across the state attended services and shared their personal experience with organ and tissue donation. Sample sermons and factual information regarding organ and tissue were available on-line. LifePoint attended the Annual Baptist Convention in Columbia and distributed education information regarding organ and tissue donation to nearly 500 statewide Baptist churches and their affiliates. 4200 East North Street Centre 22 East Greenville, SC 29615 Printing donated by 1-877-PASS-IT-ON DonateLifeSC.org
