Alshafei October , 19 , 2009 Issue Beta A NEW BEGINNING Faisal H. Alshafei President and Director, The Scholar Welcome I would like to first start with a warm welcome to all CPC & STC students and faculty. I congratulate all CPC & STC students for getting into the 2009–2010 program. I also would to introduce to you The Scholar an official CDPNE newsletter that was prepared for the first time last year by Hisham Al Hasan. The newsletter will be a biweekly newsletter. So what can I say? We have managed to successfully plow through one month of CPC. Things haven't really started to get difficult yet, but I know for a fact that most of you fellow students have already been faced by a shock to a certain degree because there certainly seems to be a sea of difference between CPC and Saudi high schools. I don't mean that in a negative way, because you all know that change is important. We have been eating the same meal for 12 years, so it is no wonder we hated school that much. The repetitiveness of those 12 years in school makes you so bored and irrational that you unrightfully judge all institutions of knowledge as boring and exasperating. CPC is simply different. We are all lucky to be here in a place that prepares you for four years of college that are looming in the near future. We should give this place a chance and show up every day with a positive attitude. Keep in mind that you only receive as much as you put in, and I assure you all that you will never regret doing your best to succeed. I know this doesn't make sense to some people, but believe me it does. May we all reach our destinations and grasp our dreams. Bader Al-Nasser Pennsylvania State University A Dedication to Mr. Cox on behalf of The scholar family and all CPC students The Scholar this year will try to achieve a simple concept that was set by Hisham himself, “ to contain what deserves to be read.” Hopefully, The Scholar family this year would be able to bring this concept to real life. So feel free to write whatever you like on any subject and try to submit what you have written to our editors as soon as possible. CPP FOOTBALL Who's the better translator: Machines or humans? For the World Wide Web to be truly global, shouldn't Chinese speakers be able to chat online with people who only speak Spanish? And why should an English speaker be barred from reading blogs written in Malagasy or Zulu? Facebook Inc. and Google Inc. are two Web companies trying particularly hard to make this happen, and they've released a number of updates to their translation services in recent weeks… ( page 3) And again congratulations! Some of these symptoms are similar to the symptoms of the regular season flu, in addition to diarrhea and vomiting. Swine flu is a dangerous disease that spreads in many ways. The virus mainly spreads from person to person through coughing or sneezing, and even touching something that has the live virus on it and then touching the mouth or nose. There are many ways you can protect yourself from swine flu. You should cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze to prevent the virus from spreading, often wash your hands, avoid touching your eyes or any open way to your respiratory system. As a conclusion, swine flu lately has been seen as a very contagious and dangerous disease that can lead to death and should be taken seriously. It is advised that if you get the flu, to stay home and visit the doctor as soon as possible to diagnose whether it’s a normal flu or swine flu so not to infect people. He begins his workday an hour earlier than most just to be there for any student in need. He never fails to come to work with a smile even when the weight of the whole world is on his shoulders. No matter how busy he is; he always finds the time to help a student. I remember the second day of CPC when a friend, with an expression of pure surprise, came up to me and said: “That Mr. Cox is amazing.” Last summer, when I first met Mr. Cox, as each day went by I knew a little more about him. I learned that he loved photography and that he took photos of each student and hung them on the wall. Even now I still see pictures of previous students. Everywhere I looked there was a group of photos of friends from previous years. I remember how with each photo he took, his office picture collection got bigger until there was no more space and instead of removing photos of previous students he went out and bought a digital frame that he later loaded with pictures. During one of my visits to Mr. Cox’s office I noticed some puzzles laying around his desk and when I asked him why he had this many puzzles, he replied: “When a new student comes in, he often feels awkward just sitting there and staring so instead he can occupy his eyes and hands in solving a puzzle.” When I heard that sentence I was amazed by how much he cared about students when he didn’t have to; he just did it because it was just the right thing to do as an academic counselor. As each day went by we all got used to seeing Mr. Cox in his office just working there saying hi to every passerby, taking photos of everything, memorizing everyone’s name, and just being there for anyone that needs him. Now, I think most would agree, every time we pass by Mr. Cox’s office and find it closed it just doesn’t feel like CPC.. By now I think most have met Mr. Cox and received help from him, whether it was a paper that was needed, a slip to enter class, directions, or just moral support. For those of you who did receive help I’m sure there are a lot of stories about Mr. Cox to share and that’s what we should do remember him and remember all of what he’s done. We all hope that Mr. Cox will come back eventually so lets all wish and pray that he does because CPC is just another building without him. It seems today that there are no boundaries that limit a human mind from creating what was believed to be unrealistic. The hot new trend today is the "Video In print technology" Built in video screens first appeared on print advertising on September 18'Th Entertainment Weekly issue. The magazine contains a two inch by a one a half-inch mini LCD screen - 2.7 ml thick - and a resolution of 320x240 that can hold forty-minutes of video. Using buttons subscribers can scroll through videos between various numbers of advertisements for primetime fall TV previews. Programs like "How I Met Your Mother?", "Two and a Half Men", and "NCSI: LA" are included in the player. Most astonishing, that the screen's battery is chargeable through a diminutive USB cord on the back of the magazine. The project of those promoted ads cost about two-million dollar investments. Critics stated that injecting this huge amount of money during an economic recession is an unwise choice especially that the cost of the magazine is high, and not many people can afford purchasing it. In the end, one might think that if this kind of technology is already in the market! What kinds of technology are there under the table? Mujahed AlSayouhi Electrical Engineering Electrical engineering, sometimes referred to as electrical and electronic engineering, is a field of engineering that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. The field first became an identifiable occupation in the late nineteenth century after commercialization of the electric telegraph and electrical power supply. It now covers a range of subtopics including power, electronics, control systems, signal processing and telecommunications. Electrical engineering may or may not include electronic engineering. Where a distinction is made, usually outside of the United States, electrical engineering is considered to deal with the problems associated with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control, whereas electronic engineering deals with the study of small-scale electronic systems including computers and integrated circuits. Alternatively, electrical engineers are usually concerned with using electricity to transmit energy, while electronic engineers are concerned with using electricity to transmit information. Education: Electrical engineers typically possess an academic degree with a major in electrical engineering. The length of study for such a degree is usually four or five years and the completed degree may be designated as a Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Applied Science depending upon the university. The degree generally includes units covering physics, mathematics, computer science, project management and specific topics in electrical engineering. Initially such topics cover most, if not all, of the sub-disciplines of electrical engineering. Students then choose to specialize in one or more sub-disciplines towards the end of the degree. Faisal Al Mansour Facebook's human translation Many tech bloggers think Facebook's method of human translation seems promising. After all, the American-born social networking site introduced non-English languages for the first time only in January 2008. Now about 70 percent of Facebook's 300 million users are outside of the United States. How it works: Real people are at the heart of Facebook translation plan. They suggest translated phrases and vote on translations that others have submitted. These crowd-sourced edits -- which work kind of like Wikipedia -make Facebook's translation service smarter over time. Go to Facebook's translation page to check it out or to participate. Abdulrahman Al Abdulmohsin Aroob Tawfiq Vice President, The Scholar Accept, Adjust, & Embrace ____________________________________ I’ve noticed many CDPNE students fussing about changing their major. Unfortunately, we all know that is almost impossible, or at least, impossibly hard. I can understand how disappointing this could be, but instead of cursing your unfortunate luck, thank God for this great opportunity. Of the hundreds of people who applied, prayed for, and worked hard to be admitted to the CDPNE, you were chosen. Be very grateful. Accept You will soon give up your hopes on shifting your major, remember the great life lesson you’re learning. Life doesn’t always go your way, and at many times, many things are forced upon you. In such case, the first thing you have to do is accept the facts. It’s like biting on a slice of lime, very sour at the begging but it wears off soon. Accept the fact that this major is what you’ll be studying for the upcoming four years, and the major your job will be based on. Don’t waste your time struggling to change it, or stalling your life to the time you succeed in doing so. ‘I’ll work harder when I change my major, for now I’ll just try to pass’ attitudes don’t work in these situations, it only makes matters worse. Adjust Once you’ve accepted your major, adjust to it. Remember, whatever major that is forced upon you, is definitely a superior and demandable major, and your job is guaranteed once you graduate. It can’t get much better. Stop convincing yourself that your major doesn’t fit your personality or interests. At this age precisely, we have very shifty personalities. In a few years you might realize that the major you right now loathe, is actually more fit for you than the one you desired. I personally applied to eight different colleges and five unrelated majors before I applied to CDPNE, and a completely different major when I did apply. Embrace Finally, embrace your major. If you cannot change your major, change your attitude! Don’t talk ill of your major, and don’t listen to those who do. Keep a positive attitude and only ask about the advantages of it. If it’s far from your interests, adapt new hobbies that are related to it. Read and research about it and admire the fascinating information you discover about it. Simply, love your major. Once you’ve followed these simple steps, you’ll find your major much more enjoyable than you thought. It’s all a matter of time and effort before you realize the magnificence of what you’re studying. Be very proud of what you achieved and aim for more. Success comes from dedication and passion, and that can only be reached by learning to love what we do. 4 Fun Games Biweekly Puzzle: Take a time to work your brain, try your logic in solving these biweekly puzzle be the king of puzzles for two weeks, the honor in winning and having your face in the paper, the 2 fastest puzzle solvers will have their pictures in this corner, try your logic. MUN stands for Model United Nations. Haven’t you ever wondered what it would feel like to be in a United Nations conference? What it would feel like to represent an entire country? To actually solve international issues that are currently happening? Well that is what MUN is all about it. It is an accurate replica of the real United Nations that is entirely student-run, meaning that every position from security to an ambassador is played by students. That ensures that every student gets to experience what it is like to be in the United Nations. The MUN CPC Conference: Of course the MUN is not complete without a conference. Just like the real thing, the CPC conference will be divided into several councils. For example: the Security Council and the Economical and Social Council. Each of the councils will discuss current international issues that are related to the council. This will enable students to experience what they like most and are good at. Benefits of MUN: Now that we know what MUN & MUN conference means, it is time to discuss their benefits. Not only MUN would help you on your college application but it will also teach you many skills for instance, communication and interpersonal skills. You will also learn to how to think logically and critically. You will learn how to make crucial decisions and learn many other things Editors: If you are interested please attend the MUN general meeting on Monday Oct/26/2009 during lunch hour, room D128.
