THURSDAY 20 June, 7.00pm 15+
The only way to begin this gig!
A collection of films from right across the
MIAF13 line-up. New films in competition,
classics from the special programs, a first
chance to meet the guests, a glimpse at the
new Australian crop and one or two that just
didn’t fit into the line-up.

BEST OF THE FEST
SUNDAY 30 June, 7.30pm 15+
SUNDAY 30 June, 9.30pm repeat 15+
Ah yes... The Big Kahuna. The End of the Line.
The Best of the Best. Judges votes, audience
favourites and a few ‘over-looked’ classics we
throw in for good measure. This is the last
chance to see these films before the curtain
comes down for another year.
Tickets sell FAST... so book early folks!
presented in
conjunction with
FILMMAKERS FLIP BOOK
WORKSHOP
FRIDaY 28 JUNE, 9.30AM-4PM
...with CANADIAN indie
animator extraordinaire
(& SPECIAL GUEST) ...
Patrick Jenkins!
We saw a version of this go completely off (in a good way,
of course) in London last year and poached the idea over a
beer. Outstanding and exceptionally resourceful Canadian indie
animator extraordinaire Patrick Jenkins has agreed to run a
very hands-on workshop focusing on the intricacies of creating
weird and wild flipbook animations. Patrick will then take this
eclectic array of animations home and gently craft them into
a finished film that will be premiered at the opening of MIAF
2014. This is an outstanding opportunity to learn the very
fundamentals of what it takes to actually translate an idea in
to a moving, animated image one frame at a time.

The backbone of the whole MIAF mission. Somehow we’ve emerged from the pile of 2,350 entries with enough strength to put
together a series of programs that showcase the best 200 or so new films. Five ‘general’ International Competition Programs, our
ever popular ‘Abstract Showcase’ and ‘Long Shorts’ programs, plus an entire competition program of new 3D stereoscopic shorts.

FEATURE: THE PAIN AND THE PITY
FRI 21 June, 7.30pm 18+
by PHIL MULLOY
The third – and presumably final – installment in the mercurial
‘Christies’ animated features by the equally mercurial bad boy of
British animation, Phil Mulloy. Raw, roughly hewn images knitted
together with a unique system of narrative structuring, bashed into
existence using the tools and resources of our age and plastered onto
the big screen with the customary ‘take it or leave it’ Mulloy energy.
Mulloy’s latest animated short ‘The Banker’ will kick off this screening.
FEATURE: PERSISTENCE OF VISION
Sat 29 June, 7.30pm 18+
by Kevin Schreck
The untold story of the greatest animated film NEVER made.
Striving to make the greatest animated film of all time, visionary
animator Richard Williams (Who Framed Roger Rabbit) toiled for
more than a quarter of a century on his masterpiece – only to
have it torn from his hands. Schreck has woven together mind
blowing animation, rare archival footage and exclusive interviews
with key animators and artists who worked with Williams on his
ill-fated magnum opus.

Canada boasts a geographically vast, uniquely diverse and gifted community of fiercely independent animators. These programs
aim to paint a picture of one of the biggest unconnected animating collectives there is. Toronto filmmaker (and special guest)
Patrick Jenkins personifies the Canadian indie spirit in every way, and has generously helped curate the programs.

RENDER ANIMATION CONFERENCE
KEY NOTE SPEAKER DAY 1
Koji Yamamura is a living treasure. His films redefine the term
FRI 21 June
‘enchanting’ and his technique and style define him as a true
master animator. His earlier career was marked by a body of
stunning, utterly beguiling and ageless children’s animation. His
latter work is aimed more at adults and has an uncanny ability
to reach in and attach itself to the part of our imaginations we
thought we had surrendered years ago.
For RENDER, Koji outlines his experience as Head Lecturer of
Animation at Tokyo University of the Arts and discusses his own
approach to teaching and his experiences in creating one of the
most highly regarded animation graduate groups in the world.

practitioners and leaders to share their knowledge and screen the works

discussing the present and imagining the future.
Mon 24 June, 8pm: Machinima – Then And Now studio 1 15+
Machinima is as much a lifestyle as an artform - a subversive re-use of existing software or
a way to turbo-charge the animating process. A review of some machinima classics sets the
scene for a look at where machinima sits right now and what the future might hold.

some of the work that has inspired them in their individual journeys.

GODS & MONSTERS:
SAVING GRENDEL
A fundraiser project to preserve
Alex Stitt’s groundbreaking
animated feature film
‘Grendel Grendel Grendel’.
‘abra cadabra’ in 3d ages
THURSDAY 27 June, 6.30pm all
photo: Fiona Dalwood
In our 13-year history, this is absolutely the
most exciting thing we’ve been able to pull off.
We established the Grendel Fundraiser as a once-ina-life-time opportunity to save an important part of
Australian animation history - to ensure the digital
preservation of Alex Stitt’s animated feature ‘Grendel
Grendel Grendel’ (1981).
Alex Stitt is a true pioneering godfather of Australian
animation. His most famous work includes the Slip Slop
Slap and Life: Be In It TV campaigns, but he created
not one but TWO visually stunning animated features
… ‘Grendel Grendel Grendel’ (1981), and ‘Abra Cadabra’
(1983) which is a unique form of stereoscopic 3D and
just happens to be the very first 3d animated feature to
be made – right here in Australia.
The very first 3D stereoscopic animated feature film
ever made, this screening comes complete with a
souvenir set of very special “Abra Goggles”. Based
loosely on the Pied Piper tale and with voices
provided by John Farnham and Jacki Weaver, it tells
the story of a happy go lucky, overly optimistic young
boy – Abra – as he goes about the very serious
business of learning about his world.

ages
SUNDAY 30 June, 5.00pm all
Getting Alex to present some of these highlights at
MIAF last year opened an Aladdin’s cave of treasures
we could never have dreamed of – and MIAF13 is where
it all comes together.
Firstly, it unearthed a NEVER SCREENED pristine 35mm
print of his first feature ‘Grendel Grendel Grendel’. It
became immediately obvious to us that we had to create
a digital copy of this precious icon so it can again be
screened and preserved for all time.
The second thing that emerged from the vapours of
Alex’s MIAF appearance last year was a phone call that
led us to a long-lost stash of the uniquely engineered
3D glasses required to watch his second feature ‘Abra
Cadabra’ in the format it was intended to be seen. This
film had no public screening in Australia and this makes
its MIAF13 screening (complete with a souvenir pair of
the special glasses called Abragoggles) a not-to-bemissed experience. With starring voice talents such as
John Farnham & Jacki Weaver, it’s a charming comic
fantasy inspired by the story of the Pied Piper.
> 19 <
Drawing from the Beowulf legend, Alex Stitt’s first
feature is a colourful, contagiously engaging gallop
through the Beowulf world as seen from Grendel
the monster’s point of view. Superbly voiced by
Peter Ustinov, Grendel comes to life as a sometimes
marauding destroyer, sometimes inward looking
deeply philosophical creature and sometimes gently
tragic character in a world outside of his control and
understanding.
Tickets are specially priced at $25/$20
All proceeds go towards saving Grendel

Classification
Like almost all film festivals in Australia MIAF does not have the resources to formally classify its programs. For this reason alone, age limit
restrictions apply to most screenings. Please carefully check the age limit which applies to each screening you wish to attend.
