printing, marketing and Jostens lingo.
Well, don’t worry. You’ll quickly discover
it’s much easier to make a yearbook when
you speak yearbook. Here’s your reference
guide to yearbooks from A to Z.
ACADEMICS SECTION: A section of the yearbook covering
in and out of school learning activities. To increase reader
interest, emphasize student-focused feature stories and
avoid academic department wrap-ups.
ADMINISTRATORS: Student leaders should ask the principal
and vice principal(s) to visit the staff in the yearbook room
on a regular basis. The yearbook is a student publication, so
it makes sense for the editors to serve as public relations
tour guides for administrators.
ADVERTISING SECTION: A section of the yearbook, often
placed in the back, that displays advertisements. The types
and sizes of advertisements sold are generally dictated by
economic need, community traditions and school policy.
Business ads, club/team ads and recognition ads are the
types of ads sold by yearbook staffs. Ask your Jostens
representative about the Jostens Ad Service program.

ADVISER: Although no two yearbook advisers handle the job
in the exact same way, the adviser’s job is that of a teacher,
leader, manager and coach. Effective advisers teach the
staff the skills necessary to publish the yearbook and then
empower the students to produce as much of the publication
as possible.
The spelling of the word “adviser” often confuses yearbook
staffs. Although most dictionaries call for the word to
be spelled “advisor,” for journalistic publications, the
Associated Press Stylebook stipulates the word be
spelled “adviser.”
ADVISER & STAFF: A magazine devoted to producing
and marketing yearbooks. Jostens is pleased to provide
this magazine to every high school yearbook staff in
the country twice a year as part of its commitment
to education.

and had a blast with all the kids. I saw how
special it was. Everyone smiling made me

to do all I could to put those smiles on
those faces again. Dance practices are a
lot of fun. During practices we go over all

and everyone starts to get excited for the

rt, chess, debate, drama, French, guitar, history, LVSI, Spanish, spirit,
and veterans; these topics and interests represent a partial list
of clubs offered to students during activity period held on most Friday
mornings throughout the year.
In this half-hour, students participated in a variety of clubs, attended
SCA-sponsored fundraising events during D rotations, or simply caught
up on their school work in their homerooms.
“Activity period gives you opportunities to join clubs that look good
on your college applications, as well as get you active,” Phillip Sherrod
said.

Although students benefited from activity period, some called for
improvements. “My least favorite part about activity period is how short
it is. I can usually still catch up on homework or talk with some friends.”
David Anderson said.
“I typically spend my activity periods doing chemistry or math
homework or attending French Club or Battle of the Books. I think
college assistance for upperclassmen and more D periods should be
made available to students as well,” Eunice Nyamuhindu said.

YearTech Font Guide
BLITZ PROGRAM: The Blitz Program makes it easier than
ever to sell yearbooks and have fun while doing it with four
two-week marketing blitzes: Back to School, Fall, Winter and
Spring. You will receive a Blitz Kit that includes marketing
materials to help you promote the book. Best of all, you
can manage the entire process with the Sales Dashboard
in Yearbook Avenue. There you will find great tools and
promotion ideas plus setups to have automated promo emails
or postcards sent directly to parents by Jostens.
BRAINSTORMING: A creative process used by two or more
people to generate ideas or solve problems. From headline
writing to theme selection, brainstorming can be used in
nearly every area of yearbook publishing.
BUDGET: A financial plan for the yearbook including an
estimate of income and expenses.
CHART IT!: A YearTech toolbar button that creates a
completely editable pie chart for a visual display of
survey data. For detailed information consult the
Quick Start card with the YearTech materials in the Jostens
Yearbook Kit.
CHRONOLOGY: Presenting the story of the year using a
chronological approach makes sense for both your readers
and your staff. Readers appreciate having the yearbook
organized in the order that the year unfolded. For the staff,
a chronological approach allows pages to be produced with
the more logical workflow while making it easier to complete
printing multiples and signatures.
CLICK-N-GO!™ DESIGN LIBRARY: YearTech and
YearTech Online offer a library of trendy headlines,
quote boxes, photo collections, scoreboards and
other content elements ready to use on your pages. To use
the Click-N-Go! Library, simply click on the Click-N-Go! button
on the YearTech toolbar for Adobe® InDesign. YearTech Online
users will drag and drop designs from the Image Templates
tab to their pages. The Page Surfer Preview Book, included
in the Yearbook Kit, shows the Click-N-Go! collection.
CLIP ART: Artwork, shapes, backgrounds, logos and borders
provided in both black and white and process color for use
on yearbook pages. Clip art is provided on the DVD for staffs
using YearTech. YearTech Online customers access clip
art on Yearbook Avenue.
COB PHOTO: Using programs such as Adobe Photoshop
or InDesign, the background of a photo is cut away around
the subject. Cut-out-background photos are popular
in modern designs.
EACH PERSON HAS A STORY, A MOMENT THAT CAPTURES WHO THEY ARE.
These students, chosen randomly, recount memorable events from their past and how those events have changed them. Use the Aurasma application to watch these people and their
stories come to life. Subscribe or follow our Dos Pueblos Yearbook channel on this app, and use it throughout the book to watch videos of events and get even more in- depth coverage.

THE MOMENT THAT sticks in my mind
is when I cracked my head open on the hurdles.
We were running, and I tripped over the hurdle.
The hurdle hit me in the back of the head. I got
thirteen staples. I was in seventh grade then.
—A moment that captures me... Probably when
I started playing softball when I was eleven. I got
hit in the mouth with a ball at my first game. I
didn’t know where the ball was, so I l ooked up,
and it hit me in the mouth and cut my lip open. I
was a little scared to play softball again, but I got
put back in five minutes later.
—That moment made me feel good about myself,
like I can do it. Since then I feel like I am able to do
more things now than I did before. I get self
confidence from playing. I thought I wouldn't be able
to play, but then I realized that I’m actually pretty
good.
GRADUATING EIGHTH grade
sticks in my mind because it’s like the start of
high school and high school kind of turns
where you go. I like it: it’s a lot bigger and
harder than junior high but it’s good. It was
cool to reconnect with people that are now
sophomores, and then I know people that are
now older and meeting new kids in classes.
—I did a lot of community service over the
summer at the start, and I vol unteered at
shelters for people and stuff. It was, like, really
nice to understand how grateful we are to have
what we have. I helped out at a soup kitchen
and the Unity Shoppe. I just went by myself. I
met people there and even already knew some
people there.
—Maybe when you’re upset about something
or not happy with the results think about how
grateful you are to have the opportunities you
have. Don’t be greedy.
I WILL NEVER FORGET my first piano recital that I
played in. I was six. I still play the piano now, and I do still like
it. I don’t remember the piece I played, only that I was very
nervous. But after every competition or recital, the
nervousness goes down, and the first of anything marks the
beginning of the rest of the journey. These first moments
really move my life in a different direction.
—My first day of school really captures me as a person
because that day really shows my personality, with people,
with schoolwork, with how I react to certain situations. I
think I was crying for my mom on that day. Socially, it’d be
a lot different if I was home-schooled; I would have a lot of
different social situations, and I would be a lot more shy than I
already am.
—School is very important; it is something that defines and
separates us from other human beings. It’s really a blessing. I
enjoy the friends and the education, and I really get to explore
different fields and define who I am. I get to discover that math is
my favorite subject because I like the straightforward answers
and logic.
I WOULD HAVE TO SAY going to
basketball tournaments as a kid really sticks in
my mind. There were always a bunch of kids, so
it was really fun to run around. The people I was
with— they were amazing.
—I think the memory of when I was playing
basketball when I was in third grade really
defines who I am. I was playing with my sister
and it was two baskets to win, one to tie. And
the coach was looking at me like “Jocelin, you
can make this,” and I thought “yes, i can,”
because I was really bad at shooting. But then
I won the game for all of us. It was just one of
the best moments of my life.
—It made me want to be better and play harder
so that when the next situation came up, I
wouldn’t ever have to be like that. I wouldn’t have
to try extra hard to beat the team. It inspired me
to play ba sketball even more. It’s my life now.

selected–by closing our eyes and throwing a bouncy
ball at a list of Cornerstone class portraits.

I HAD MONONUCLEOSIS. With mono, it
was a struggle; it was a huge battle that I’ll never
forget. It stuck in my head because I lost pretty much
everything. I practically died, no one knew where I
was, and I had 5 months worth of make-up work to
do. And there were emotional stresses with that too,
being away from people for so long. I was a wreck.
—On a less depressing side, those moments
running 400s with the track team during freshman
year really define me. We had this one day where a
group of us was assigned to run twelve 400s, a run
which is just a pain in the ass. It’s a sprint but it’s the
longest sprint, so it’s really hard. Our coach didn’t think we
actually did twelve—so we had to do another one. But
the whole thing made me realize I was willing to push
myself even more, and somehow, I was happy t o do it.
Even though it was so terrible I wanted to throw up, I was
willing to do it.
—It made me want to strive for that level of push and
effort and made me want to feel that good about myself
again, where I could struggle through something and come
out laughing in the end, so happy that I had done it.

CAPTURING WHO WE ARE
JUNIOR
SENIOR
I WILL NEVER FORGET this one time when
I was going with my uncle to get the mail. I was really
excited about it. I started skipping and we had these
stairs right in front of our house and so I slipped and I
got this huge gash on my eyebrow. I find it funny that
when people look at my eyebrow and see that it has a
scar in it, they think that it’s disorderly, and they always
want to fix it.
—And a moment th at defines me? Well, there was this
one time I was at my cousin’s 5th birthday party and his
cousin was being really rude to everyone at the party.
The whole time my mom was like, “be on your best
behavior,” but this kid was being really rude to my
cousin, so I couldn’t take it anymore. I went up to him
and I was like, “what’s your problem?” I did something
I’m not ashamed of, and he stopped. I felt real ly proud
of that. I think it made me more confident because I started
to think that I had a voice.
—I tend not to stay silent about most things, and I stand
up for what I believe in. If I feel even slightly challenged, I
will make sure that I am the dominant one. If I see
someone being bullied, I will do something about it.
NOT TOO LONG AGO, my ankle had been hurting.
My parents had raised me to believe that you don’t complain,
so I never said anything. And one day we were doing suicides
at soccer practice, and I could feel it pull but I thought
nothing of it. I ended up on crutches for a week because I
went to the doctor and he said it was a sprain. My club
team was going into state, so I just sucked it up and played
on it for six months. It turned out that I had an avulsion
fracture, so the inside ligament of my ankle got really
stretched out and it pulled the bottom of the bone and broke it.
—A moment that captures me? I really like to be outgoing and
crazy, so one time I decided I had never been pier jumping, so I
got my friends to take me out to Goleta Pier. It was twelve
o’clock at night, and I had to swim all the w ay back to shore. But
it was one of the best things ever. I love doing crazy stuff and it
was such an adrenaline rush. Since then, I love to go pier
jumping, no matter what time of year.
—When I was younger, I was actually kind of shy. But
throughout high school I’ve gotten really outgoing, and I don’t
care what other people think. I think that’s captured who I’ve
grown into because I’m comfortable being me and I love doing
fun stuff.

THOMAS CHILDERS
IN KINDERGARTEN I WAS running around the
playground and there was a mulberry tree and I was running
around and it caught my ear. I had to go to the emergency
room. I will always remember running towards the tree, and
blacking out, and waking up at the emergency room with
four doctors around me. I was six, so it wasn’t very nice. I
was pretty scared. I was just kind of uncertain about what
was going to ha ppen. I was young so I didn’t know that the
doctors were there to help me.
—The first time I went snowboarding really captures me as a
person; it was the best experience of my life. That’s what really
started snowboarding for me. I have been snowboarding for six
and a half years and I think the first time I went to Mammoth
Mountain was probably one of the best experiences of my life.
The main thing that I remember is that there was nobody there
at all, so the park was empty and I could do whatever I wanted
to do. I go snowboarding a lot, any chance I get. I’m actually
sponsored by three different companies.
—I think the first time I went snowboarding, I finally found
something I could be okay at, and then I started pursuing it and
I got better and better and better, and now I’m pretty good.

Cut-Out-Background: The Image, Dos Pueblos High School, Goleta, CA
BUSINESS MANAGER: One or more student leaders in
charge of marketing and selling the yearbook.
CAPTIONS: Copy that answers reader questions about the
people, the action and/or the reaction in the photograph.
Effective captions answer the five W’s and H: who, what, when,
where, why and how. Captions might also include additional
information and insights relating to the photo as well as quotes.
COLLAGE: A special technique in which a photo illustration
is created by using parts of several different photos.
Software, like Photoshop, gives a collage a more
refined look. Collages are most appropriately used for
recognition ads.
COLUMNS: Vertical guides for placing content elements. Wider
column formats include six, eight and 10 columns on a spread;
however, as many as 26 columns might fit across the spread.
Narrow columns are also known as grids.
COPY: Words written in a variety of formats to tell a story or
describe an event. Also called a story or article.
COPYRIGHT: Exclusive rights for the creator or owner of original
literary, artistic or photographic material to make, distribute and
control copies of that work for a specified number of years,
as guaranteed by law. The use of copyrighted material without
first obtaining permission from the copyright holder is copyright
infringement.
COVER: The first thing a reader sees when receiving a
yearbook, so it should make a positive first impression. Verbally,
the theme is often introduced on the cover, either directly or
subtly. Visually, shapes, graphics, art or even photography might
be introduced on the cover and carried inside the book. While
some staffs desire a cover exclusive to their school, others
prefer to select a Jostens Studio cover.
CREATIVE RESOURCES: Designers are often available at
workshops and take a staff’s idea and develop it into a cover
sketch. Production of final cover art is also available. If you
are interested in using these services, contact your Jostens
representative.
CROPPING: Editing a photo to eliminate distracting or
unwanted portions of content. Easily accomplished in
Photoshop.
DEADLINES: The dates that completed yearbook pages are due
at the Jostens plant. Meeting all deadlines is essential to keep
the delivery of the yearbook on schedule.
DELIVERY: There are two basic yearbook delivery options.
Delivery is often dictated by school tradition.
Spring Delivery allows for distribution at the end of the school
year, but requires a shorter production time for the staff to
submit pages.
Summer/Fall Delivery provides a longer production cycle
allowing the staff to include year-end coverage, but requires
distribution in the late summer or fall.
DESCENDER: The portion of a lowercase letter that falls below
the x-height.

DIGITAL CLASSROOM: Within Yearbook Avenue, the digital
classroom houses videos, worksheets, handouts and
activities for use in a yearbook class.
DIGITAL IMAGES: The majority of staffs are shooting images
digitally or scanning traditional prints for digital submission.
Picture Placer, a YearTech toolbar button, makes it easy to place
digital images. Staffs using YearTech Online can upload their
digital images to their Image Library through Yearbook Avenue.
DISTRIBUTION EVENT: A special activity for distributing and
signing yearbooks. At many schools, a distribution party is a
fundraiser with a $1 to $5 admission charge.
COVERAGE REPORT: Both YearTech Online and
YearTech feature Coverage Report tools that track
who is featured in the book and how many times,
making it easier to meet the goal of featuring every student at
least three times. Those using YearTech and YearTech Online can
access the Coverage Report under the Create menu. Great for
ReplayIt.com ties also.
DIVISION PAGES: Indicate new sections and provide continuity
throughout the yearbook; a key area for developing the theme and
relating it to the yearbook’s sections. Pre-designed division pages,
some designed to complement Jostens covers, are available and
previewed in the Art Book. For electronic placement on YearTech
pages, Jostens division pages are included on the DVD with the
YearTech materials in the Jostens Yearbook Kit. YearTech Online
users will find division pages in the Image tab in Page Designer.

COLOPHON: A reader service that lists the staff,
acknowledgements, printing specifications, awards and
press association memberships.

FONT: A complete set of characters (letters, numbers and
symbols) that share a common weight, width and style.
Each font has a unique name such as Helvetica or Times.
Jostens provides more than 200 fonts for use in the book.
The YearTech font card or the YTO font card previews all
fonts available.
DUOTONE: A photographic effect that reproduces a photo
in black and white and one additional spot color for a special
graphic impact.
GATHER TO SUBMIT: A YearTech function that is built into the
Prepare for Submission button. If the spread is ready to send
to Jostens, run Gather to Submit. This process will find links
and save pages and links to the Submit Folder inside the proper
deadline folder. The process will not complete until all the
links can be located. For detailed information, consult the
Quick Start card with the YearTech materials in the Jostens
Yearbook Kit.

EDITOR: A student leader in charge of the entire yearbook or
a portion of the book.
EDITORIALIZING: To be avoided in journalistic yearbooks, this
happens when the opinion of the reporter/writer is included in
a story. The reporter/writer should remain objective. Opinion
is a major component of journalistic writing, but should reflect
the viewpoints of those involved or familiar with the topic.
In journalistic writing, direct quotes with attribution are used
for reporting

ENDSHEETS: The heavy paper between the cover and the
first and last pages that is used to hold the signatures onto
the cover. Endsheets may be designed by the staff and often
complement the cover. Studio endsheets are also available
and previewed in the Covers Book.
EYELINE: Used to unify a spread, an eyeline is created when
elements are aligned so the one-pica spacing extends
across the spread, above or below the center mark, to give
movement to the reader’s eye. The eyeline might be broken
by a design element, such as a dominant photo.

stayed in water long enough, I

longer than my mom wanted

“I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid. I thought
it would be amazing to be a part of mankind’s greatest
accomplishment, to be the first man on
Mars. Then NASA’s budget got cut from their $12
million spending by the government when the
government spends more than that a day in order to
save money. The budget cut doesn’t give NASA the
capability to launch big space ships into space so
becoming an astronaut is not possible. I’m thinking
about going into engineering, maybe develop
weapons for the military instead.”

clouds and a trip to
the stars. Though
the imagination of
a child is certainly
infinite, most
gravitate towards
the same visions of
their future. Among

dreams stands the

president, athlete,
veterinarian,
princess, and so
on. However, the

HEADLINE: Words, often in a large point size, designed to
attract immediate attention, highlight the content and lead
readers to the story. Frequently enhanced with typographic
and graphic techniques, a headline often includes a primary
and secondary headline.
• A primary headline is larger and grabs the reader visually

It’s every student’s favorite week of the year–exam week. Yay. It’s a week
full of cramming early semester knowledge, all-nighters and the jitters.
The first public examinations for schools
were introduced in 1858, in response to
a demand from schools themselves as
a way of measuring their pupils’ knowledge.
But have you ever wondered where exams came from? Well, here’s how
it all began.

visit your staff on a regular basis. Plan for these visits
by keeping an on-going list of non-urgent questions.
Your representative is knowledgeable on all aspects of
yearbook production. The Jostens representative keeps
the administration, adviser and staff updated on all
business matters including the budget, production matters
and deadlines.
• Content
module: occupies a portion of a page or spread,
often displayed with other content modules presenting
different perspectives on the same topic.

LEAD-IN: A mini-headline for a caption that provides a catchy

Suddenly, after months of planning, McDonald’s Week was set
to kick off.
But just a week before the
fundraiser, disaster struck
when Mahowald was diagnosed
with a concussion after being
head-butted in a water polo
match. With his partner unable
to help, Perkins was forced to
take on the brunt of the work.
“Matt’s concussion gave
me a lot more responsibilities
to handle two weeks before
McDonald’s Week, but most
of the big problems we had to
face had already been solved,”
Perkins said. “The Junior Class
really came together to help
me out when I needed it, and I
could not be prouder of the way
everyone worked together for
Austin Street.”
Playing off the 2012 presidential election, the juniors
chose the theme “McCampaign
2012.”
Using McDonald’s week
characters Hamburglar and
Grimace as candidates, the juniors devised a voting system in
which people could buy colored
wristbands to vote for one of the
candidates.
“This year, the Class of 2014
pushed for stronger participation from the entire St. Mark’s
community by using wristbands as our voting system,”
Perkins said. “The St. Mark’s
community embraced the voting system with a lot of intensity, and it was always fun to
see the sides each student had
fallen on.”

After three years of watching
the Spirit Stick handed off to
other classes, the seniors
were not giving up their last
chance. Senior Class
President Tate Roberts said,
"It felt like a mosh pit up in
the bleachers. The Senior
Class took the lead, and all
of our hard work finally paid
off. We couldn't help but
storm the court after the win.
In the end, I ended up
leaving with no voice, but it
was all worth it."
As the senior class left their
final Welcome Back
Assembly, they had crowns
on their heads and the Spirit
Stick in their posession.

honored to represent Green Valley. I'm
proud of our achievements, and our spirit
is off the charts. It's going to be the best

InDesign links to the file and stores a preview of the graphic
for screen display. When your pages are printed, the original
graphic must be available and linked or only the lowresolution version of the graphic will print, often resulting
in bitmapped images.
• External
margins act as a frame around the outside edges
of the spread and should be kept free of content elements
with the exception of bleed photos and folios.
• Internal margins, or internal spacing, is the white space
between content elements. Consistent spacing is the
key. One pica is suggested.
MARKETING PLAN: Outlines the details of a yearbook sales
campaign and highlights reasons for consumers to buy
the yearbook. The plan includes goals/objectives, target
audience, theme, timelines, sales dates, events, strategies
and materials needed.
MINI-DEADLINE: By breaking down larger deadlines into
smaller, more manageable mini-deadlines, stress is reduced
and pages get completed on a timely basis.
MORTISE: A special technique that places photos on a design
so they overlap or touch. Or, smaller photos might be inset
into a larger photo. This strategy works most effectively when
the content of the photos justifies the treatment.
MULTIPLE: Yearbooks are printed on large sheets of paper
called signatures. A multiple, also called a flat, contains
the eight pages on one side of the sheet. Since there are
two sides to the press sheet, there are two multiples per
signature.

Kind, sweet, gentle. Those close to senior Jessica
Tripode say there is a genuine honesty to her nature.
“Jessica has the biggest heart,” TAFE adviser Mrs. Amy
Moncrief said. “She is constantly serving others, and it is
second nature to her. She is truly a gem.”
TAFE is just one way in which Tripode pursues her
passion for teaching. For two years, Tripode has also been
an Algebra I student teacher at Griffin Middle School,
but her personality has allowed her to teach more than
just math to her students.
“Her compassion and dedication. She really puts focus
on helping the individuals,” freshman Jordan Reinken, a
former student of Tripode’s, said. “When she is helping you,
you really feels like she cares. She was just a teacher’s
aide, but she really gave us attention and cared for us.”

Emily Martin, 9
Tripode’s care and compassion is deeply rooted in her
faith. She teaches third and fourth graders at her church.
“I get to be silly with them and laugh with them and
just let them know that no matter what’s going on at home,
no matter what condition they come to church in, they
always have a friend in me,” Tripode said.
Through her church, Tripode traveled to Sierra Leone
in West Africa over spring break. Her experience at an
orphanage left a definite and permanent impact on her
heart and cemented her desire to work with children.
“It’s opened a door of compassion in me,” Tripode said.
“I see things so differently now. My love can never be
perfect, but I will spend the rest of my life trying to love
kids and to love people the way God loves me.”

PHOTO IDENTIFICATION: Text accompanying a photograph
identifying individuals and perhaps providing a brief
explanation of the content, generally not a complete sentence
or as detailed as a caption.
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION: A special technique in which a photo
is “created” to illustrate a story. This might require the posing
of subjects or objects. Electronic tools might be used to alter
or recreate the image. The content of the illustration should
be planned. What does the reader learn from the illustration?
Don’t allow the point of the illustration to be lost in creativity.
Responsible journalists label photo illustrations for the reader.
PHOTO LABELS: Prior to sending photo prints to the plant, they
need to be identified with a photo label. There are two different
labels preprinted with your job number. They may be ordered
from Marketing Services.

bottom center of candid photos
to be printed in black and white
or process color.

Place the small labels on the
back of portraits. These labels
are also used by YearTech
Online customers.
PHOTO POCKET SHEET: A sheet of six low-tack, adhesivebacked photo pockets that provide students with a unique
way for adding personal memories of their year to their
yearbook. For more information refer to the Covers Book in
the Jostens Yearbook Kit.
PHOTOJOURNALISM: The art of telling a visual story with
photographs. Photojournalists capture life as it happens,
with an emphasis on emotion in motion. Photojournalistic
images are not staged or posed. Electronically altering
photojournalistic images poses ethical issues since this
violates the trust that readers place in journalists.
PHOTOSHOP®: A professional imaging software by Adobe
used by staffs with the desire to electronically alter or
edit images and other high-end creative options beyond
image preparation and placement. For information on

An estimated 15 couples were kicked
out of the dance for not honoring the new
“front-to-front” dancing rule. Chaperone’s
job were to warn students once, then
remove them from the premises if they
continued to dance “inappropriately”.
“I left because I didn’t support the rule
and the DJ deliberately played bad
music to stop it,” said senior Kayla
Robinson. “Now everybody is mad
because it’s the seniors’ last dance and
all the underclassmen’s dances are
ruined now.”
Senior Charnae Courts said, “ I’m
surprised the administration actually
enforced these rules. In past years, they
have never enforced anything like this.
I think they should have gone about it
differently.”
Come Monday, the controversy wasn’t
over. Local news programs NBC 25
and ABC 12 both ran stories on the

email that Dr. Jennifer Hammond
sent to parents after the dance, she
stressed how many times students were
reminded of the face-to-face policy
before the dance, and how unfortunate
it was that they still were obligated to

want our students to have a positive
social experience during their time at
GBHS,” wrote Hammond in an email to
all parents, “But our expectations for
future dances will be for all students to
dance appropriately and this policy will
be strictly enforced.”

Personalizing items for spirit week was trending
on class shirts and dance gear. Sophomore
Sarah Kennedy made her own festive mask for
the masquerade. “I had a blast at the dance and I
loved the theme,” said Kennedy, “and it only took
me an hour to make my mask.”

SUPPLIES: Additional supplies might be necessary in addition
to the materials in the Jostens Yearbook Kit. There are three
ways to place an order:
SHIP DATE: The date that your yearbook is scheduled to be
completed and shipped to your school. The ship date is set
based on the submission of all deadlines on time and with
the proper number of pages as well as the prompt return
of all proofs.
SIGNATURE: Yearbooks are printed on large sheets of paper
called signatures. Each side of the sheet is called a multiple.
When folded, a signature becomes a 16-page mini-booklet
and is bound together with other signatures to make
a complete book.

As the year progressed, the Jaguars saw successes in several
areas including 2nd in district for football, 3rd in state for
girls' cross country and 3rd in district for fast pitch softball.
Cross Country Coach Laura Clay and former Wrestling Coach
John Finn were both named to the Oklahoma Coaches Hall
of Fame.
Whether practicing or competing, the pain and sweat felt
were only temporary because of the ultimate goal. Through
the suffering they experienced, they still did it as a team which
made them stronger, better and more disciplined. "We had a
great season this year. Everybody on the team got along and
worked hard at every practice. We're a big family and we had
fun playing together. I'm definitely going to miss these girls,"
senior Valeria Di Filippo said about the volleyball team.

For the Record
Each year has something new to offer, whether it be the every-Wednesday-Spanish club
meetings or attending the basketball games or maybe even the growing anticipation for
the musical’s opening weekend. We see our fellow students on the field or performing on
stage, but we don’t know what happens in the locker room or back stage. We are setting
things straight, showing what’s behind the scenes.
The Valkyrie Running Club held the second annual Gingerbread Run, a fundraiser
for the club which also doubled as a fundraiser for charitable organizations such
as the Love Fund and the Johnson County Christmas Bureau.

The 5 kilometer or 3.1 mile run consisted
of two different races. The first was a four
person relay and the next an individual 5K.
The course closely emulated the course that West
cross-country runners used during their time
trials. The four lap course toured through the
SM West campus.
One of the runners, sophomore Erika Smith
competed in the four person relay. This is Smith’s
first time participating in the run.
“I was on a team with [sophomores] Elaine
Williams, Kathryn Brown and Kathleen Lansdon. We all dressed up as cowgirls and wore
flannel shirts and cowboy hats. For the baton we
used a horse head on a stick,” Smith said.
During the relay, the older in age team
Where’s Waldo sent two runners at once. This
caused them to gain a lead on Smith’s team who
crossed the finish line last.
A new addition to the event this year was the
costume contest. Junior Jonathan Wilson, his
family, and sophomore Ian Wiscombe came up
with an elaborate costume to win the contest.

held to honor academic accomplishments of students. This year, 40% of the
students receiving an award attended the ceremony. Many awards are given out
during awards night including National Merit Scholarship awards, College Book
awards and Presidential Volunteer Service awards.

The events, the sports, the activities all came to an end. Where
did the year go? We had more than one state champ, we came
together to raise money for cancer research, and we caught a
break with five snow days. Each day we brought a mix of personalities that defined us as a whole. We learned a lot in the year
about the school as well as ourselves. Who would’ve thought this
year’s close would’ve come so soon? The year is complete.

Homecoming court was crowned at the game against the SM North Indians. The homecoming dance was inspired
by the 50s sock hop era. Records, old fashioned cars, and black and white tile dominated the decorations.

The Parade
The homecoming parade allowed students to
leave seminar early and march down Santa Fe
Trail Drive to downtown Overland Park. Members of the community lined the street to watch
the floats created by various sports and clubs, as
well as faculty.
The counseling office took home the coveted
staff trophy once again, despite a flat tire. The
counselors dressed up as members of the band
KISS and had a concert like set-up on their
trailer.
The student prize was awarded to the boys
and girls basketball teams for the second year in
a row. Second was taken by cross country and
third by boys soccer.
The basketball team created a replica 50s
soda shop, complete with a juke box and a black
and white tiled floor. The girls wore poodle
skirts and the boys wore cuffed jeans and white
T-shirts to complete the theme. Junior Justin
Fetzer was a member of the float.
“The parade was amazing. There were so
many sick floats. I just knew that we would win
because I was dressed as Elvis,” Fetzer said.
The parade led students to a pep rally at the
gazebo in downtown Overland Park. Coach
Tim Callaghan and senior football players gave
speeches to excite the crowd for the game. Kez
Demby spoke to the fans.
“I remember being an underclassmen and
watching all the guys I looked up to give their
speeches and how I wanted to be like them
someday. When my time finally came, I realized
that I was a senior that had underclassmen looking up to me. And that was a proud moment for
me,” Demby said, “I felt a little sadness thinking
that this was my final pep rally as a Viking.”
The Game

Dance team and cheer had members return to

perform on the track like old times.
At halftime, the Vikings were crushing the
Indians 49 to 0. Attention turned to the top
12 homecoming candidates standing on the
sideline. Second attendant to the king was a tie
between Jake Vance and Swedi Ntakirutimana,
while first attendant was awarded to Brett Neely.
Jack Jeronimus was crowned homecoming king.
Kathryn Martin won second attendant, and first
attendant was given to Jillian Benson. Kayla
Rogers, student body president, was named the
homecoming queen.
“I was shocked. I didn’t expect to win,” Rogers
said, “I was happy that I won but I felt like everyone deserved to win.”
In the second half, a senior suffered a career
ending injury. Robert Rice broke his left leg after
getting tackled by an opposing player.
“My first thought was its over, and why me?”
Rice said, “But the pain of it being over was a lot
harder to handle.”
With revenge in mind, the Vikings went on to
win the game 58 to 0, pushing them to 6-1.

Every year students from Karen Tritt’s Spanish 4
classes perform a group project that recreates the NBC
show “Live! with Regis and Kelly”, now Live! with Kelly
and Michael.
There are two TV show hosts, five celebrities and three
interviewers. Students also have the choice to have a
commercial break or “breaking news” story. The celebrity groups ranged from the cast of the “Hunger Games”
to the cartoon characters in “SpongeBob”. The celebrities answered the questions of the interviewers just as
the real life people would. The skits were all in Spanish
and Tritt captured all of them on video.
“The kids have to use real Spanish in a fun situation and each student picks a part that suits his or her
strengths,” Tritt said.

food and my mom dressed up as a Price Chopper cashier and used a shopping cart that all the
“food” got in and my mom pushed us around,”
Wilson said.
Individual runners as well as teams received
gingerbread man medals for their top finishing
or creative costume.
“One of the best parts was seeing everyone
dressed up. All the costumes were very creative.
I also really liked watching everyone get their
gingerbread man rewards,” Smith said.
Last year the run had 60 people and raised
$300 which Jeff Onnen, cross country coach and
organizer of the event, called “humble beginnings”. This year, the race proved much more
successful with 94 runners who raised a total of
$1,500.
“The race had a great atmosphere,” said
Wilson, “It was awesome to see how many
people braved the cold and participated for a
good cause.”

Z PATTERN: The path a reader follows when looking at a
design. The eye generally enters in the upper left area,
moving across, diagonally down and to the right. This tells
yearbook designers that the upper left area of a spread is a
prime location for exciting and important content. The spread’s
lower, right corner isn’t a prime location because content might
not be read if the reader prematurely turns the page.
