The United Nations
Association of the Philippines (UNAP) accorded the
General Carlos P. Romulo
Achievement Award to Dr.
Adora S. Pili, President,
Technological University of
the Philippines.
The
awarding ceremony was
held on October 28, 2015
at the Pamantasan ng
Lungsod ng Pasig, Pasig,
Metro Manila.
The award was given in
recognition of Dr. Pili’s
valuable contributions in
the Philippine Educational
System in her various
capacities as Professor,
Dean, Director, Vice President and at present,
University President. She
is regarded an icon in helping mould the youth to become future leaders of this
country.
In her acceptance
speech, Dr. Pili said that
she was humbled and
honoured to receive the
Carlos P. Romulo Achievement Award, which she
would like to share to the
TUP constituents and to all
her countrymen. Further,
Dr. Pili said that she is
aware of the duties and
responsibilities that come
with the prestigious award,
and believes that she has
already committed herself
to the cause of providing
relevant and quality
service to the youth and
fellowmen that would, by

transformation in their
lives. She ended her

President Pili receives 2015 NU Outstanding Alumni
Ten alumni of the National University
were conferred the “2015 NU Outstanding
Alumni Award” by the National University
Alumni Federation, Inc. (NUAFI) last October
17, 2015 at the NU Social Hall, Manila. One
of the awardees, TUP President Adora S. Pili,
was a graduate of NU in 1978 for the Bachelors of Science degree in Chemical
Engineering.

A public forum on the proposed TUP Charter was held on
October 1, 2015 at the conference hall, Integrated Research
and Training Center. The forum
was convened to help craft a bill
that would revise the TUP Charter and declare TUP as the National Center for Technology
Education. Involved in the assembly were former TUP Presidents, technology education experts, University officials and
student leaders.
The forum commenced
with the Welcome Remarks by
President Adora S. Pili, acknowledging and thanking the
distinguished guests for their
individual contributions and
commitment to TUP that
brought about its present prominent stature. Further, she said
that with the support of the
iconic experts, the objectives of
the forum could be achieved.
She stressed that subsequent to the outcome
of the said forum, plans should be put to action in order to surely bring TUP to the apex
of technology education in the country and
become globally competitive in the future.
Dr. Ma. Leonor F. Validor, Director, TUP Visayas campus and Chairperson of the NCTE
Committee introduced the resource persons
composed of three former TUP Presidents and
two well-meaning friends and supporters of
TUP, namely, Dr. Fedeserio C. Camarao, 4th
and Centennial TUP President and former
Chancellor, University of the East-Caloocan;
Dr. Bernardo F. Adiviso, 3rd TUP President and
former Director, Colombo Plan Staff College;
Dr. Olympio V. Caparas, 6th TUP President; Dr.
Perfecto A. Alibin, and former President, University of the Southeastern Philippines and
former President, Philippine Association of
Colleges and Universities of Industrial Technology (PACUIT); and Dr. Renato V. Alba,
former President, West Visayas College of
Science & Technology and Executive Director.

the participants a comprehensive overview of
the activity.

The awarding ceremony was the highlight of the 68 th Founding
Anniversary of UNAP, an association which was established and
spearheaded by General Carlos P. Romulo in 1947.
As part also of the anniversary activity a seminar on
“Cushioning the Impact of K12 Curriculum,” which was participated
in by several faculty members of the University was conducted.
The Honorable Maribel A. Eusebio, City Mayor, Pasig City, also
received the Carlos P. Romulo Achievement Award.
Past awardees were boxer and Saranggani Representative, Hon.
Manny Pacquiao, Commission on Higher Education Chairman, Dr.
Patricia B. Licuanan, Filipino- born American Businesswoman,
Loida Nicolas Lewis and Foreign Affairs Secretary, Hon. Albert del
Rosario.
The awarding activity was co-sponsored by the Pamantasan ng
Lungsod ng Pasig led by its President Dr. Amihan April M. Alcazar.

The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was
held between the Technological
University of the Philippines,
represented by its President, Dr.
Adora S. Pili and the Fil Apparel
Corporation (FPAC-JAG), represented by its Senior ManagerBusiness Development Mr. Arturo P. Relatado at the TUP Ad-
ministrative building last September 18, 2015.
TUP and FPAC-JAG agreed
to provide On-the-Job Trainees
under the TUP Supervised Industrial Training Program the
opportunity to acquire industrial
experience in designing, manufacturing, retailing, marketing
and sales of fashion & apparel
products at FPAC-JAG. This corporation is
one of the country’s largest garment manufacturers producing its own house brands
for wholesale or retail. It also produces top
retail brands in the United States such as
JAG Jeans, JAG Thug/Kids, Lee Pipes and
Jean Tribalgear, Von Dutch, Candie’s and
USPA.
Other pertinent terms and conditions underlying the agreement were properly discussed and examined by both parties involved. Witnesses were: (TUP) Dr. Melito A.

TUP sets MOA signing with BCDA
“In upholding the University’s commitment to
provide new facilities with
research laboratories,
space for teaching and
technology production to
its stakeholders, TUP has
embarked on an ambitious plan to expand its
campus ground to Clark
Green City. The planned
expansion is the new
campus that will be
named, TUP Center for
Industrial
Development and Productivity
(TUP-CINDEP).
This
new campus is envisioned
to support the latest engineering, science and technology developments;
offer courses for the K-12
high school graduates;
and train manpower of
neighbouring industries.”
To begin the development plans for a future
campus in Clark, an initial
discussion was made between the Base Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) officials and
TUP CINDEP project authorities on December 2,
2014.
The agenda focused on how TUP can
acquire land donation in
Clark Green City.
The succeeding encounter of TUP and BCDA
took place on February 2,
2015. TUP officials headed by President Adora S.
Pili attended the Awarding
Ceremony of the Open
Competition for the Opti-
mization of the Clark
Green City Master Plan
held at Mind Museum,
CGC Taguig City.
On
this occasion, Dr. Pili had
the opportunity to obtain
concrete
information
about Clark Green City.
On April 28, 2015,
the TUP team visited the
BCDA Corporate Center,
Taguig and had a brief
discussion on the following: Clark Green City
(CGC) Map familiarization and a view of the
future location of TUP
CINDEP; CGC’s policies
and requirements; preliminary activities needed to be carried out before the signing of MOA
between BCDA and TUP.
After which, a tour to the
spot of TUP-CINDEP in
CGC was made by the
TUP Team, BCDA Team
and the Tennessee Renewable Energy and
Economic Development
Council’s (TREEDC) Director Warren Nevad.
On June 8, 2015,
TUP President Dr. Adora
S. Pili presented the TUP
CINDEP Development
Plan to BCDA officials.
With Dr. Pili’s excellent
presentation,
20 hectares with provision up
to 100 hectares of land
donation was granted to
TUP by BCDA.

The Technological University of the Philippines received a
Recognition Award from Swiss
Cultural Fund worth One Hundred
Thousand
Pesos
(P100,000) for submitting the
most number of entries in the
“Create and Innovate: Essence
of Switzerland Art Competition”
during the awarding ceremonies held last September 8,
2015 at the Swatch + Swatch
Bldg., Makati.
The Create and Innovate
competition aims to create artworks that captured the spirit
of Switzerland by creating
something original; innovating
an old concept; or making
something with a touch of
Swatch. Though, many impressive entries flowed in, the
top three winners from their
respective categories were
chosen by the panel of judges. Two students from the
College of Architecture and
Fine Arts (CAFA) were
among the Top 20 winners
of a limited edition Swatch
watch and a Swiss bag filled
with goodies such as cap,
Swiss chocolates,
Matterhorn mouse pad, lanyard
and more.
Not only did the competition bring some winnings to
the University, but most of
all, it gave its young artists
an opportunity to showcase
their novel and fresh ideas,
reimagining concepts and
making them come to life.

the same manner, he added that pending the writing of the said bill, he advised the body to have a
timetable, have consultations with other institutions and the private sector, and conduct research
on the status of international universities that also
offer technology education.
Furthermore, he said that
TUP should avoid duplicating what other institutions
have been doing.
The second speaker,
Dr. Fedeserio C. Camarao,
commended TUP for the
effort to propose a bill on
changing the image of the
University. However, Dr.
Camarao said, he would
support the idea of making
TUP a national university
rather than simply making
it a National Center in
Technology Education. To
justify his claim, Dr. Cama-
rao explained that TUP
had already taken a lead
in technology education
as substantiated by its
numerous
recorded
achievements in the field;
therefore, calling it merely a center was reasonably inappropriate.
He
then provided a considerable list of changes and
improvements that TUP
has to undertake in order
to become a national university in technology education.
Dr. Renato V. Alba
shared the same perspective as that of Dr. Camarao’s adverse concept of
revising the TUP Charter
and declaring the University a national center.
Correspondingly, Dr. Alba
said, TUP should aim to
be a National University or
become the Technological
University in Asia instead.

Dr. Perfecto A. Alibin
lauded the pervading interest and desire of TUP to
improve its stature as a
University in technology
education. He tackled the
poor position of the country in terms of developing
scientists and technologists,
which he said was largely
caused by lack of support
from educational institutions. It was in this context that he highlighted
TUP’s role, which however,
he added, should be upgraded, so that in time
could propel TUP to reach
the apex of technology
education.
Further, Dr. Olympio
V. Caparas candidly expressed that he will not
support the idea of lower-
ing the level of the University to a center. He envisioned the early and present
achievements of TUP in
terms of providing technology education, thus he said
that TUP should simply and
most importantly develop a
culture of shared responsibility and sharing of expertise to bring about unity
that could raise the TUP to
higher grounds.
A moderated open forum followed, participants
engaged in interactive discussion with the speakers,
covering issues that mostly
pertain to institutional centers’ development and
maintenance.
Finally, was the symbolic Signing of Commitment which was executed
by Dr. Pili and former SUCs
Presidents. After which, Dr.
Melito A. Baccay, Vice President for Academic Affairs
expressed his gratitude to
the guests and participants.

September 17, 2015, TUP officials and
BCDA representatives had a meeting again
at the BCDA Corporate Center, Taguig to
finalize the contents of the MOA that will be
signed on December 16, 2015. The MOA
included all the significant inputs from both
parties- TUP and BCDA.
Only recently, TREEDC officials led by
Director Warren Nevad visited BCDA to discuss about its partnership with TUP vis-àvis
the establishment of TUP-CINDEP;
and to obtain more information from BCDA
about CGC Project in reference to TUPCINDEP.
To put into finality the cycles of meeting
about BCDA’s land donation to TUP, a signing of Memorandum of Agreement will be
held on December 16, 2015. This momentous event will happen at the Centennial
Stage in time for the Opening Ceremonies
of the 114th TUP Foundation Anniversary.
