GYE CORP. WEBSITES:
Before we get started, it’s important to explain
some core filtering concepts.
Blacklist, Content or Whitelist
Filtering?
Blacklist Filtering leaves the internet wide open
and ‘blacklists’ bad sites. This is generally not 100%
reliable.
Real-Time Content filtering is similar to a
blacklist, but instead of indexing the sites once
in a while, the filter scans the content of each
page in real time before it shows on your screen.
Depending on the nature of the content found, it
either blocks parts of the page or the entire page.
For sites that are updated often, this method of
filtering gives much more accurate results. It also
works very well for dual-use sites like Youtube,
Craigslist, etc..
Whitelist Filters will allow you to ‘whitelist’
specific websites you need, keeping everything
else blocked. This is the most secure method.
Which should you choose? If you google a lot
and visit new websites each day then use blacklist
or content filtering. However, if you visit the
same websites each day with only occasional
exceptions, then a whitelist will do a better job.
Whitelisting is also recommended for computers
used by children and youth.
Location of the filter
When making a choice of what filters to get, you
also need to take into account how many devices
need filtering, and if the devices are portable:
Kosher Service Providers and Network
Filtering - These options are convenient if you
have an office with multiple computers. Instead of
setting up filtering on each computer separately,
you can use one solution that will protect all of
them at once. In addition, any devices using the
office wireless internet network will be protected.
However, this option will not protect devices that
can connect to outside wireless connections.
Computer Filtering Software or Mobile
Filtering Solutions give complete protection to
the computers or devices that they are installed
on, no matter how they connect to the internet.
This is especially critical for smartphones, laptops
and netbooks which can easily connect to public
WiFi. However, this does not provide protection to
other internet enabled devices in the home until
they have their own filter installed. When relying
on computer or mobile filtering software, it is
important to put a password on your router (see
page 13 for instructions).
Accountability Solutions - This novel idea is
not actually a filter, but it should be used together
with one, since filters are never 100% fool proof.
The idea of Internet Accountability is simple:
A person will certainly not view inappropriate
material on the internet if others could see what
they have viewed. These solutions will send
reports of your computer’s internet activity to
another person. Ideally, this should be combined
with a good filter.
New solutions are coming out all the time. For
the most up-to-date information, see our website

May our efforts bring us to the fulfilment of

VENISHMARTEM FILTER GUIDE - MAY 2013
Venishmartem
Cloud Filter
This spring (2013), Venishmartem released a new
filtering solution dubbed VCF (Venishmarem
Cloud Filter). This filter promises to bring a
revolution to the Jewish community.
What is a “Cloud Filter”?
The term cloud is used nowadays to describe
a service that uses online software, rather than
software installed on your computer. Think of
an online email service like Gmail, for example.
Instead of keeping copies of your emails on
your computer, they are stored online and are
accessible from anywhere. At Venishmartem, we
have discovered that a cloud-based filter is the
ultimate solution for the Jewish community.
Here’s why: When a filter is installed on your
computer, then by definition, you are the only
one capable of making changes to the filtering
level. You can even turn it off on a whim, when
you have a weak moment. Even if the program is
protected by a password, it is only effective if you
have someone who can hold the password for
you. Otherwise, the filter hardly provides any real
protection.
A cloud based filter is very different. Since it is
online, no physical access to your computer is
necessary to make changes to your account.
Therefore, the management of the filter can
be delegated to someone else. With VCF, you
delegate this job to the Venishmartem staff or
other professional technicians who are trained by
Venishmartem.
It’s not that you’re relinquishing control
completely; you can always ask us to change your
filtering level or to allow a specific site. You can
even hire one of our trained 3rd party technicans
to customize a tailor-made filtering level to suit
your precise needs. But thanks to VCF, gone are
the days when you’ll find yourself turning the filter
on and off depending on your mood. You also
won’t have the option to instantly remove the
filter in a weak moment. Removing VCF requires
the assistance of our customer support and takes
a least 24 hours.
‘‘Gone are the days when
you’ll find yourself turning
the filter on and off
depending on your mood’’
Until now, cloud filtering technology was only
available by switching your ISP (internet service
provider) to a Jewish company, and was only
available in specific locations. Now with VCF, this
technology is accessible to everyone. In addition,
VCF protects your computer even when you
are connected to the internet through a public
unfiltered WiFi network.
Venishmartem is a non-profit, and our only goal in
providing these solutions is to solve the internet
problem at the root, by providing effective and
easy-to-use filtering solutions for Klal Yisrael.
VENISHMARTEM FILTER GUIDE - MAY 2013
Technology
The backbone of VCF is solid filtering technology.
VCF PRO utilizes the newly released Livigent®
Content Filter, developed at a cost of six million
dollars and specifically designed to cater to the
sensitivities and needs of the Jewish community.
VCF Basic utilizes Websense® Cloud Web Security
used by thousands of corporations worldwide.
Websense, Inc. (NASDAQ: WBSN) is a global leader
in providing comprehensive filtering technology.
These companies only license their products
in bulk to major businesses or organizations,
and they do not offer end-user support.
Venishmartem facilitates the framework to
provide these top-notch filters to the worldwide
Jewish community by purchasing licenses in bulk
and providing the following features for your
convenience:
• Multiple filter levels to choose from, designed
by our team to suit everyone’s needs.
• A full-fledged support system, staffed by
secretaries to help you get started and deal
with basic changes, and a 3rd party support
framework with technicians trained by
Venishmartem.
Basic or Pro?
VCF comes in two versions: Basic and Pro.
VCF Basic ($4.99/month) uses cloud software
from the highly regarded Websense Cloud Web
Security. It is a solid, cheap and reliable filter,
which blocks objectionable sites and material.
Sites like Youtube, Facebook, Google Image
Search, Craigslist, etc. are blocked by the filter,
because although these sites may also be used
also for good, there is lots of objectionable
material on these sites.
VCF Pro ($7.99/month) was designed with the
frum community in mind and uses cloud based
software provided by Livigent. VCF Pro is a
content-based filter that uses Artificial Intelligence
to check each page in real-time to decide
whether it is acceptable or not. It can even detect
and block objectionable images on the page!
VCF basic on the other hand, relies on periodical
categorization of websites and is not always as
accurate.
With VCF Pro, sites like Youtube, Google Image
Search, Craigslist, etc. can be left open for those
who need them because the software can
differentiate between pages within a single
website.
Both Basic and Pro have a free option for those
who cannot afford to pay. Everyone else is given
a 30 day free trial to evaluate the filter without
being charged.
Read more about VCF on page 7 (under
Computer Filtering).

VENISHMARTEM FILTER GUIDE - MAY 2013
Kosher Service
Providers
These solutions are recommended for
non-portable computers like Desktop
computers. These companies offer
‘kosher’ internet service which is
filtered before it reaches your home
or office. This way, any computers
or devices in your home or office
will have filtered internet. Kosher
service providers cannot usually
be bypassed. The downside is, that
when connecting to someone else’s
Wi-Fi you will not be filtered at all.
Therefore, it is recommend to also use
a regular filter on the computer itself,
especially when using a laptop.

FILTERING
This filter was designed by Venishmartem
and is both flexible and very secure.
Other computer filters can be disabled
at the spur of a moment by entering a
password. VCF uses unique technology to
avoid this nisayon.
Customizations to the filter can be done
by contacting the VCF helpdesk or
certified 3rd party technicans. VCF has 5
basic levels of filtering and an optional
skin color filtering add-on. You can also
request to allow or block specific sites.
“Surfing without a filter
violates the prohibition
of ‘Yichud’.
VCF Basic uses Websence® technology,
and allows you to set a different level of
filtering for each user of the computer. It
is compatible with Windows 8 and Mac.
VCF Pro uses Livigent® real-time
filtering and can differentiate between
acceptable and objectionable pages on
problematic sites (e.g. YouTube). VCF Pro
keeps the same settings for all users of
the computer, and you can share your
settings with an additional computer so
that all customizations made for your
account will be applied to both. Read

cannot be deleted this way, and new
apps can still be installed, so follow the
additional steps below.
From your device home screen, select
Settings > General. Select Restrictions >
Enter a 4-digit passcode. It is important
that another person should put in and
keep the passcode for you. Set Safari,
YouTube, Installing Apps, FaceTime,
iTunes, and Explicit Language, to the
setting ‘Off’. Scroll down to Allowed
Content > Select Music & Podcasts.
Set Explicit to ‘Off’ for listening > Select

If you need filtered internet, the Mobicip
is a good option. This free app installs a
new browser on your device which will
have filtered internet. Safari will still be
unfiltered, but you can remove Safari
by following the steps in the previous
section (“lock your device”).
Mobicip gives you the ability to fine-tune
your filter by choosing what types of sites
you want to allow or block. You have over
85(!) categories to choose from, including
16 YouTube categories. You can also add
custom phrases to be blocked. Mobicip
also allows you to block specific sites
entirely, or to allow only a specific list
of websites to be accessible (whitelist).
Mobicip also has a time limit system
and a reporting feature which can email
a report of internet activity to an email
address of your choice.
The free version of Mobicip gives you
only 3 levels of filtering to choose from,
the “Elementary School Level” is the best
of them. The full version costs $9.99 a year
per device and includes all the features

Beware of free apps. Many of them
have in-app ads with web browsing
capability. It is advisable to remove all
free apps before locking the device,
unless you are 100% sure that they
don’t have internal browsers.

If you absolutely need the freedom
to install apps from the app store,
set the rating of apps that can be
installed to 4+. Also block the option of
uninstalling apps and have the device
reviewed from time to time to make
sure no problematic apps have been
and is well worth it. We suggest that you
register for the account with someone
else’s email address so that you don’t
have the Nisayon of bypassing the filter in
a weak moment. Once your settings are
in place, you can ask them to change the
Mobicip password so that you no longer
have direct access to make changes.

type of protection for IOS devices. Unlike
the solution mentioned earlier under

BLOCKING APPS
To setup ‘Net Nanny’ (available in the
Play store) you will be asked to create
a new account ($13/year) or sign in to
an existing account - if you have one
already. Have a Rav, friend or spouse set
up the NetNanny account and password
for you. NetNanny also has the option of
blocking apps. After the initial installation,
you can make changes to the settings for
your protected device(s) from any web
browser, even without physical access to
the device.
Note: NetNanny requires the device to
run Android 2.2 or higher. For a list of
Smart App Protector (available in the
Play store) allows you to disable any apps
you don’t want (e.g. Internet Browsers,
YouTube, Facebook etc.). Ask a Rav,
friend or spouse to keep the password
for you and you’re set! Follow the app
instructions carefully to make sure you
get full protection.

• MONITORING ONLY
This app monitors all web activity on the
default browser and all app activity on
the device, and reports which apps
were used, for how long, when they
were installed and what their rating is.
The app cannot be uninstalled without
an uninstall code. To download the app,

Regular Phones
Regular phones don’t allow you to install
filters. But you can still make a filter via
your cellphone carrier’s content filtering,
which they can apply to your account
upon request (usually only for monthly
subscribers, not for prepaid clients). For a
list of all major cell phone companies that
filter content see: goo.gl/cWzuv. For a list
of Kosher phones see page 9.
You can also disable the internet on
most phones by contacting Meshimer:

Tips & Tricks
In addition to a filter, there are many other
ways to ensure that your web experience
is not disturbed by inappropriate images
and advertisements. Below are some
suggestions:
Blocking Pictures
The Firefox Browser (www.mozilla.com)
allows you to contro the way images are
displayed on websites.
1) Go to the “Firefox” tab (top left).
2) Go to Options > Options
3) Click on the “content” tab. Deselect
“load images automatically”, then click the
“Exceptions” button.
4) Enter the URL(s) of websites for which
you want to allow pictures, and “allow”
after each one. Then click “close” and “OK”.
After you do this, the pages you visit
will not have any pictures showing,
except on the allowed URL’s. When you
are confident about the content of the
site you are on, you can follow the steps
mentioned above to enable the images
of this URL to show.
To achieve this on other browsers see

block-images-ads-safe-searches.
Blocking Ads
Another powerful add-on for Firefox and
Chrome is ad-block which removes ads
from webpages.

The Best Way to Help Your
Kids
Be intellectually honest. Don’t expect
to start lecturing kids about Internet
standards if you don’t set standards for
yourself. Tell your kids about your own
precautions with Internet use, and talk
to them from time to time about how
Hints That You May Have a
Problem at Hand
If your Google or Gmail account offers
you improper advertisements, this
probably means that your computer
is being used to visit improper sites.
Google tailors its advertisements to the
user’s taste, based on sites visited! Visit
the history setting on your computer
(sometimes found under Favorites). If
you know that someone was using the
computer at a certain time, but there
is no history of the sites he visited, this
means that he is hiding something by
deleting the history.
Tips to Creating Passwords
• Have your Rav, spouse or friend set up
and save the password for you. • Type
13
in half the password on your own, and
have a friend or spouse type in the other
half. That ensures that no one can make
any changes in the filter without the
other’s cooperation. • Kids are known to
figure out passwords, therefore a strong
password is very important for your filter.
It is also a good idea to test the password
from time to time to make sure it has not
been reset by the child.
No Filter is Perfect
Even the best filters may have loopholes.
Therefore it is a good idea to install more
than one layer of protection, especially
when children are using the device. For
example, besides for internet filtering, get
accountability software as well. (See page
8, and especially solution #11).

How to Lock a
Wireless Network
To ensure that you are not causing
others to stumble, put a password on
your router to protect your next-door
neighbours and other people outside
of your home.
http://192.168.0.1, in the address bar. If
this number doesn’t work for you, consult
with your router’s user guide.
You may need a password. The default
password and address is often printed on
the router itself, or in the instructions that
came with it.
There are two ways of locking your
wireless network:
The first is by creating a password, so that
only someone with the password can
access the Internet.
The second way, which is more secure,
only allows access to devices on a
“permitted list.” This works by using a
unique identifier for each device, called
a MAC address. With this system, only
specified computers and devices can
access the wireless network.
1. Open the preferences for your router.
If you set the router password long ago
and no longer remember it, you can often
reset the password to the manufacturer’s
default by pressing a reset button or pin
on the router itself (holding it down for 20
seconds or so).
Often the preferences are set by opening
your web browser and entering a URL
with numbers, many times it is
Alternatively, preferences may be set via
a specific program for your router, which
you installed on your computer when
you added the router.

Rabbanim Speak Out
S
urfing without a filter violates the prohibition of ‘Yichud’. There is absolutely no
excuse not to have an Internet surfing filter on one’s home computer. Not to do so
is to violate the commandment, “You shall not put a stumbling block in front of a blind
person”.
- Rav Shmuel Halevi Wosner
I
t is perfectly possible that while monkeying around with the Internet, you hit a button
and there’s a pop-up of an inappropriate scene. You weren’t looking for it, but it happened. You have exactly 3/10ths of a second to turn it off. And if you wait for 4/10ths
of a second, you may become addicted. That’s how severe it is. It’s one of the most
powerful addictions. Day after day after day - I get letters and calls from people who
say, “what can I do to save myself?” Because they have fallen into this addiction and it
has taken them all the way down. It has ruined more marriages than anything, ruined families. It’s been terribly
destructive.
- Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, MD
T
here is no bigger problem facing the individual in Klal Yisrael and communities at
large than this. I hate to sound pessimistic – but if you have unrestricted Internet in
the house – Internet that is not both filtered and reported, I would say there’s a higher
than 90% chance that people have already stumbled in your house. And if it hasn’t happened yet, there’s more than a 90% chance it will happen.
- Rav Yosef Viener, Rav of Kehillas Shaar Shamayim, Monsey
