I hope you all enjoyed your festive celebrations and congratulations to those of you who had new arrivals to the family during this time. It was our first Christmas with our 10 month old son and it certainly was memorable. At this age the highlight for them is always the decorations on the tree and eating the wrapping paper! For our almost 4 year old it was the disbelief of Santa’s present being what she’d asked him for when she spoke to him on the phone. For next year check out www.santacall.co.nz/default.aspx for Santa to call your child or to receive a personalised video check out www. portablenorthpole.sympatico.msn.ca/home. The excitement and amazement from our daughter was just priceless. We welcome The Library Café & Function Venue to our Member Discount Scheme; check out page 9 for more details. We will now be including a recipe from ‘the Cookery Book’ by Taupo Parents Centre. This book is available to purchase at $12.00 and includes recipes as well as Edible Kids Goodies i.e. Banana Teething Blocks as well as Inedible Goodies i.e. Playdough Recipes and Handy Hints. To order please phone Debbie Booth 624 1877. Bridget Baker, Editor Newsletter Contributions Do you enjoy our newsletter? Is there something else you would like to see included? I’m also the ante natal course co-ordinator for the Central Auckland Parents Centre and I help out hosting the Practical Parenting sessions. I also returned to the paid workforce three days a week in July last year. My favourite role is hosting the Practical Parenting sessions – I love seeing the expectant parents and talking about life with a newborn. The only downside is that helping bath the newborn baby makes me so clucky!! As ante natal class co-ordinator I am always after volunteers for hosting courses. It’s a great refresher course for having your second (or third or more!) baby, it’s a night out once a week for six weeks and you get a small remuneration for your hosting. All you have to do is attend the course and set up the coffee group afterwards. Speaking of coffee groups, I wanted to say hello to my coffee group! They are a fabulous group of ladies who still catch up every week, and even though I can’t make it as often now I have returned to work, I really do appreciate their friendship and support over the last two years. Volunteering with Parents Centre has been a fabulous opportunity for me. Through it I have attended the Volunteers Symposium in September which was really interesting. We got to meet other Parents Centre Volunteers and participated in seminars and discussion groups which not only benefited my volunteer role but my paid working role too. I can highly recommend volunteering with Parents Centre – for me it has been a highly rewarding experience. 12 • • • WE WANT YOU • Did you enjoy your antenatal course? Remove from the heat and whisk in the egg and cocoa powder and place back onto element and cook over low heat until custard thickens making sure to stir all the time and that it does not boil. Once thickened remove from the heat and allow to cool for a few minutes before adding the vanilla essence and stevia. Either serve immediately or cover (so film doesn’t form on top) and place in the fridge. Breastfeeding Balls Ingredients ¾ cup skim milk powder 2 Tbsp brewers yeast ½ cup melted honey ½ cup peanut butter ¾ cup wheatgerm ½ cup dried fruit – apricots, sultanas etc. Coconut This recipe is thanks to ‘the Cookery Book’ by Taupo Parents Centre Method Mix all the ingredients together and roll into balls. Roll the balls in coconut and then put in a container and store in the fridge. This recipe is sometimes a bit dry so squeeze the balls together hard, or add some more honey. Have two balls daily with a cuppa or when it takes your fancy. They are an acquired taste, but do contain lots of energy which is great for breastfeeding mothers. 20 Volunteer Positions Our Centre has several volunteer opportunities that we must fill to allow us to continue to provide services to our members. It is a primary care maternity hospital available for both birthing and postnatal care. Birthcare is a secure facility offering free undercover parking and easy access. Use of Birthcare is free to all birthing and postnatal women, but there is an option of upgrading to a private room should you choose. The private upgrade provides a single room with ensuite, television, fridge and special menu and the freedom for partners to stay over should they choose. However the same high quality midwifery service is available to all women using the facility. The Birthing rooms house large pools for those wishing to use warm water immersion for pain relief and relaxation. There are many midwives who currently provide birthing services here for those wishing to have their baby in a smaller, more intimate unit. We are close to Auckland Hospital for transfer over should this be necessary. We launched our own Team of midwives in April 2008, who provide continuity of care for those women choosing to birth at Birthcare. They are passionate about supporting and promoting natural birth at Birthcare. There is also a great team of professionals who provide postnatal services. These include physiotherapists, visiting pediatricians, and lactation consultants. The core midwifery and nursing staff are highly skilled in all aspects of postnatal care. They give special attention to parentcraft, and education to assist in that transition to parenthood. They liaise closely with the LMC’s who are providing care for the women here and enjoy working in a close relationship with them. We have a lactation clinic which is held twice a week and is free for up to 4 weeks postnatally with a written referral from the woman’s LMC otherwise there is a $50 charge. There are regular tours of Birthcare for prospective parents.
