Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998 / Hindi / 152 mins)

Starring:- Jaya Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Joy Sengupta, Seema Biswas, Rajesh Tailang
Dibyanath Chatterji, his bank-employed wife, Sujata, and youngest son, Brati, live an affluent
existence in Calcutta, West Bengal, India, circa early 1970s. Sujata is a quiet, devout Hindu, religious,
and compassionate woman, and Brati has finished his school and is now attending college. His
parents are proud of him, and keep track of his progress. Then their world is shattered during the early
hours, when they are informed by the police that Brati has been killed. Dibyanath and Sujata go to
identify Brati's body, mourn, lament inconsolably. They know now that their lives will never be the
same again - for by the police they will be called the mother and father of corpse No. 1084. Sujata
struggles to understand Brati's passing, meets his friends one by one, comes to know that Brati had a
girlfriend, NandiniMitra, and that's when she finds out that Brati was part of a rebel group often referred
to as "Naxalbari", a militant leftist group. As she delves deeper and deeper into Brati's former life, she
begins to understand her son's struggle, and decides to continue to further this.

Depicting the horrors that happen in a juvenile home. The story revolves around an imaginative
and intelligent 11-year-old boy Kukoi who runs away from his village home and starts working in a
motor garage in a city. One day the owner attempts to molest Kukoi. In self-defense, Kukoi hits the
owner with an iron rod killing him on the spot. Kukoi is produced before court and then sent to state
juvenile home where he is traumatized. BiswaBoro, the warden of the home, is an understanding
man. He coaxes the boy into a confession of the true circumstances of the painful event. Kukoi is
brought before the magistrate who orders his release and custody to his parents or any authorized
guardian. Biswa goes to Kukoi's village where he discovers that the boy's mother died years ago and
his stepfather has disowned him. Biswa, who is now retired and does not have children, decides to
adopt Kukoi.

Set in the 10th century A.D in Sharvasti, the capital of the Kingdom of Malla. It revolves
around two individuals - the King of Malla who is unable to father an heir, and the Queen is
forced to choose a potent mate for one night. But, while the queen is ordered to merely
produce an heir through the prevalent custom of Niyoga, she ends up enjoying the sexual
act. Her over demand for a repeat act thickens the plot.
