The first film in this year’s Cathy and Morris
Bart Jewish Cultural Arts Series, In Search of
Israeli Cuisine is a portrait of the Israeli people
told through food. The feature length
documentary puts a face on the culture of
Israel, profiling chefs, home cooks, vintners,
and cheese-makers drawn from the more than
one hundred cultures that make up Israel
today – Jewish, Arab, Muslim, Christian, Druze.
A rich and human story of the people emerges.
Not only can a good meal soothe a grumbling
stomach, it might well change the world!

THE ORIENTAL SOUTH: THE
ENSLAVED MIXED-RACE BEAUTY
IN BRITISH ART AFTER 1865
In 1868, three years after the end of the
American Civil War and the abolition of slavery,
fashionable British sculptor John Bell debuted
his work The Octoroon at the annual Royal
Academy exhibition in London. An unclothed,
alabaster beauty with dainty wrists bound in
chains, Bell’s sculpture represented a mixedrace slave girl from Louisiana. Like previous
nude marble sculptures of lovely female
captives, most notably Hiram Powers’ Greek
Slave, The Octoroon ostensibly aimed to inspire
the Victorian viewers beyond their erotic
impulses to the highest echelons of moral and
aesthetic contemplation. However, in this case,
racial difference made all the difference. The
“exotic” racial identity of Bell’s sculpture –
seven parts white, the last eight black – could
prompt viewers to read cold, white marble as
hot, sensuous flesh! Using Bell’s The Octoroon
as a case study, but attending to other examples as well, this talk by Mia Bagneris, Assistant Professor of History of Art at Tulane, will
explore the faddish fascination with beautiful,
light-skinned slave girls in British Victorian
culture, especially after the abolition of slavery
made the political mobilization of such figures

JCC member Ramon Vallejo will speak on his
experiences, observations and reflections
from his May - June 2016 journey walking the
Camino de Santiago de Compostela (The Way
of St. James), one of the three major Catholic
spiritual pilgrimages. The Camino de Santiago
is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes
stretching across Europe and coming together
at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish)
in Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain.

body. Physical balance requires
attention, steadiness and calmness – the very
same attributes many of us are looking to

BEGINNER’S DANCE
Children will learn ballet basics and dance
techniques. Position work, center work and
mini-routines will be taught for multiple dance
genres, including ballet, hip hop, jazz, and
creative dance. Incorporating props and games,
our class is ‘tu-tu’ much fun!

INTRODUCTION TO DANCE
Introduction to Dance will teach varying
styles of dance, including ballet, jazz, hip hop,
modern, contemporary, tap, Broadway-style,
partner, and even line dancing! Each class will
expose students to the basics of a dance style
while exploring different ways to move the
body to a wide range of age-appropriate music.
Must be potty trained.

Participants will expand their palettes by

In this introduction to soccer, players participate
in skills and drills at weekday practices and
experience “game day” every Sunday as we
divide into teams and play games. Transitional
care is available to JCC nursery school students
enrolled in U6 soccer from 2:45 - 4:00 PM for

SPORTS HOUR
Participants will be exposed to a multitude
of sports as we learn the rules and basic skills
that apply to each game. Great introduction to
the concept of team sports as well as individual
skill development. Comfortable clothing with
