VW Vortex Reveals Spy Photos –
Beetle Convertible Coming!
VW Vortex writer Jamie Vondruska says their website had retouched photos of the Beetle cabrio
VW tried to disguise with different turn signals and other tricks. The car is to be officially
revealed at the Los Angeles Motor Show next month, but now you know what it will look like. It’s
expected to offer similar trim options and the same engine choices.

The website agrees with this editor’s lament that VW does not think it can overcome the
formidable obstacles and make a profit selling trucks in this country, hence we here in the US
must just admire the Amarock from afar.

Here we are with the beginning of fall with 2013 is just around the corner!
This month I want to provide some information about simple things you can do to drive more
safely, which will not only help you and your passengers, but others too!

Simple things you can do to drive more safely
With the official start of summer and the school year ending this week in many areas, millions of
Americans will be hitting the road for a much needed vacation. But before you head out on that
road trip, check out our list of important things you can do to drive safely throughout the year.
In 2010, over 33,000 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents and many of them were
preventable. Just by doing the few simple things listed below, you can reduce your risks
considerably.
1. Buckle up. The use of seat belts saved the lives of 13,000 people in 2008. In a crash, it
is your best defense to help keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle. If you don’t
buckle up, you could be thrown out of the car, which is almost always a deadly scenario.
2. Secure your kids. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for kids between 3 and 12
years old. By placing all children 12 and under in the back seat, you can reduce injury risk
by 64 percent for children under 8 and 31 percent for 9-12 year olds. Also, make sure
your children are in the proper seat for their age and it’s installed correctly.
3. Don’t speed. Speeding is a factor in about one-third of all fatal crashes, killing nearly 900
Americans every month. Although it affects all ages, crashes and violations are much
higher for young, male drivers. Obeying the speed limit will also help to conserve fuel.
4. Keep your eyes on the road. In 2009, over 5,400 people were killed due to distracted
driving and 448,000 were injured. The best advice is to put the phone away and focus on
the road. No call or text is worth losing your life or killing someone else.
5. Preventive maintenance. By checking your tire pressure and tread wear, fluids, and
batteries regularly you can help spot a potential problem before it becomes a dangerous
accident on the road. Also, keep up with the vehicle maintenance schedule noted in the
owner’s manual to stay on top of problems before they happen.
6. Don’t drink and drive. In 2009, there were 10,839 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, and
while that number has declined from 2008, there are still many lives that can be saved if
everyone remembers to assign a designated driver if you’ve been drinking or hand over
the keys until you’re sober.

7. Look around. Every car has a blind zone and some are larger than others. Around 50
children are backed over every week, so if you don’t have a rearview camera, make sure
you’re diligent about checking mirrors and looking over your shoulder before backing up.
If you still cannot see well, get out and walk around to make sure nothing is in your way.
8. Use your signals. By alerting other drivers of your intentions to turn, you can help
prepare other motorists and bicyclists around you.
Our job as a driver before we get behind the wheel is to PLEASE remember that we are driving a 3,500+
pound weapon. This weapon is capable of causing a great amount of destruction. It MUST be respected
to protect ourselves and others on the road with us!
If all of us take the time to make safety a part of our daily routine, we will all benefit from it.

Secretary’s Report
The September Meeting of the Central Florida VW Club was
held at the Five and Diner on Colonial Drive in Orlando on the
8th of the month.
Those in attendance were: Rollie Walker, Saul Klein, Richard
and Debbie Van Treuren, Chris Hobbs and Madison, Will and
Joan Euverard, Don Steiner, and Wayne Johnson.
New Biz:
Meeting touched on several points- the Wolfsburg Trophy awarded the Club was passed around for
all to enjoy… We discussed the Convention for 2013 in Chattanooga. All were interested, but there
were questions about who does what. Before any commitment, we would like to see a plan and
some guidelines to ascertain whether it is feasible for us to do. Items under the guidelines or plan
would consider Registration, Advertising, Printing, Hotel and Banquet Deposits, Show Grounds and
activities, Room Guaranties, time of year, whether it is flexible, Hospitality, Factory Tour, Dealer
Support, Plan of Action, Support from the City Of Chattanooga for the use of the park behind the
factory for camping and a show. So there is a lot to think about between now and then. Don’t know if
there has been a Convention hosted by more than one club before… Several people indicated they
would go up for the Convention. A day’s drive is a very doable thing!
March Show and Shine:
We have lost our venue at the District 46 Entertainment Complex as they are closed down. Rollie is
going to check with the City of Winter Springs for the use of Central Winds Park for the 10th of
March, and whether the Explorers are up to another show!
Regarding the Change of Venue for the October Meeting: We will not be going to the Willow Tree
Café in Sanford in favor of the Five and Diner and a Show in Avalon Park the afternoon of our
meeting. Avalon Park is right near the Five and Diner and no doubt there will be some Club
Members who have elected to show their cars. Flyer Is attached later in this issue. We’ll postpone
the visit to the Willow Tree for another month.
Meeting adjourned at 3:15 and we all went to see the new dealership that Aristocrat has opened just
around the corner from our meeting place of the 5 and Diner. For those of us who went over, the
new buildings are impressive and our favorite service tech from Aristocrat, Carlos, is now assigned
to the new dealership, it was nice to see familiar faces in new places! The new facilities are
gorgeous! Lots of places to show off our favorite cars, beautifully laid out, lots of light, great parking,
etc. Very First Class!
Don’t forget, October meeting will be at the Five and Diner. Show afterwards
