Don Stephens Stan Gin Membership and Handicap Chair Dennis Murakami Webmaster Victor Vannukul Newsletter Editor Tim Baldwin Tournament Starter James Rhodes Member-At-Large Archie Nakaoka Kirk Boswell George Murphy Howard Wu Bernard Penafuerte We all play golf to have fun. That’s why the ALSRI Golf Club was started, so that everyone could get together, play golf, socialize, and have fun. Since we started awar di n g pr ize s at tournaments, we also want to win….but we have to play by the rules! At the season ending tournament at Sierra Lakes, one of our members was determined to be less than honest regarding accepting money for a closest to the pin award. The ALSRI board members, after numerous discussions, decided to take action against the member as follows: • Page 4 The member is placed on 1 year probation. • The member is allowed to enter tournament at Cascades participate in the championship. • The member will be able to enter all remaining 2002 tournaments but will not be allowed to qualify for any prizes . • not the The or club The member will not be allowed to participate in the 2002 A L S R I C u p competitions. The board felt that this amount of sanction was necessary because of the image we are trying to maintain to the public. Even though our club is not officially connected with our employer, we are nevertheless, connected and inappropriate actions by our members also reflect negatively upon our employer. We also have to be concerned with the image our guest players have of our club. The rules of golf are unique. In no other recreational sport is the participant asked to police themselves. When you play golf there’s no one watching, and that’s the beauty of it. You’re the only person in the world who sees everything. You know if you move your ball accidentally or kick it out of the rough. And if that happens, you have an obligation to call a penalty on yourself. Let’s all have fun, but most of all, lets Play by the Rules!! PAGE 5 EAG LE VOLUM E 8 I S S UE 1 Inside ALSRI………………………..…………Golfnut (The writings of Golfnut do not reflect the opinions of the editor or the ALSRI Golf Club) The ALSRI family was e x tremel y sh ocked an d saddened by the news this past week of the death of Robert Maggio. “Robo”, as he was called by those who knew him, left us due to heart failure and that was ironic. We knew Robo as a fierce competitor in softball, in golf, and in life. We can remember Robo crushing a softball in the old IRS softball league, helping the Downtown team to another of many championships. We remember Robo teeing up a golf ball and knocking it out of sight. Dennis Murakami kidded him that he hit his stray shots in the direction of the beer cart so he wouldn’t have far to walk. We remember Robo as just a fun loving guy who was easy to talk to and to be around. All the qualities of a person with a “Big Heart” and yet, it was his heart that took him from us. It also took him from his wife and two young kids. It has been said that no one is promised tomorrow, but it is always a surprise when we lose someone we know. The ALSRI Golf Club will be accepting donations at the Cascades golf tournament which will be presented to Robo’s family. Please contribute so that we, as a club, can show that we care. We’ll miss you Robo. Rest in Peace! For those who don’t know, the Cascades tournament is officially designated as the “Tourname nt of Champions” for the purpose of crowning our club champion. Our current champion, Nick Castro, will have severe odds to overcome to retain his Page 5 championship. To date, no defending champion has successfully defended his crown. Therefore, Golfnut has officially declared Nick as toast and opened the door for contenders….Congratulations to Larry Taylor on his hole-in-one on the par 3 4th hole at Sierra didn’t get to properly see him off, next month Golfnut will donate a considerable amount of time to r o as ti n g “ M r. M o n te r r e y Madness”. Hey Lou, I miss your free lunches. Please hurry back….Golfnut heard that ALSRI members John and Joycelyn Fawaz are spending t h e week before t h e Join “ALSRI” private chat room at AOL on February 10, 2002 L to R: Stan Teragawa, Larry Taylor, Gerard Quary, and Robert “Robo” Maggio. between 8-10 Lakes. The official line shows that LT used an 7 iron, two rabbits feet and a four leaf clover to make that shot. The feat was especially satisfying to LT because of the extremely windy conditions and the fact that he has never carded a score less than 9 for that particular hole…. Al Valentine, the golf guru, will have a number of ALSRI golfers at the Primm Valley golf courses February 17—19. Two rounds of golf at the Desert and Lakes courses and lots of gambling. Stay tuned for upcoming golf excursions to be presented by Al…. Lou Pacho, quietly slipped out of town last month to take a position in Washington, DC. Since we Cascades tournament in New Orleans, attending the Superbowl and partying at Mardi Gras. Too bad Golfnut couldn’t tag along ’cause I’ve been known to be a party animal….Haven’t seen or heard from James “Big Dawg” Rhodes recently. The Big Dawg is well into his yearend hibernation. When he comes back, probably around the Los Serranos tournament, I’m sure he’ll be hungry for somebody’s lunch...Hey Bernie Els, I just found a wonderful new course with water playing on at least 8 of the 18 holes.
